u probably hvnt set your class path properly/at all. To answer your other question: public static void main(String args[]) { System.out.println("Hello World" ;} Put this in your text editor and save it as ".java", then: open a dos prompt (if using windows), navigate to where you have the file and type "javac [filename].java", then assuming you don't get any compilation errors, the [filename].java gets converted to a class, so at that point: type this next - "java [filename]", and you shd see "Hello World" printed in the dos prompt. I hope this helps. |
if i understand what your question is, then I don't think you need php. A little javascript function called window.open should be able to do the trick. google for it. there r tons of examples out there. If i dont understand your question, then help me understand as your post is kind of cryptic. Thanks, |
so, I can't believe that this thread has drawn up to 3 pages worth of posts. We have deviated, in my opinion, from the original intent of the thread. "Should we" and "can we" are 2 different things. Should we? In my opinion, I don't think so and wouldn't recommend it. Can we? Yes we sure can. In fact, we can even create a website for free. Rather than direct our energies towards a "do you know who I am" mentality, I say we do what Afam has been saying since pre-independence - direct our energies towards creating IT solutions that will beneficial to the Nigerian economy (via job creation, GDP growth, etc). Nigeria is known worldwide for 419 and yahoo boy-ism. Isn't it about time we were known for creating, say, web 3.0? Something to think about folks ![]() |
LMAO, So, I have been scratching my head now for quite a while and I think I can now see why I didn't do well in my philosophy and logic classes at UNICAL ![]() If the guy were a movie screenwriter (hint, hint for him ), he would definitely know how to write scripts for suspense movies. |
I say the site should cost no more than N4,000 ![]() |
opensource, not to deviate from the original topic but you have left me utterly confused ![]() No need to explain yourself. I would rather remain confused. Let's stick to the topic. If need be, we can introduce another one for our purposes. Thanks, |

opensource, if only biggjoe coded to web standards, there would be no need to use javascript to do browser-sniffing. The whole point of introducing web standards is to prevent us from doing that. I remember back in the day when I had to sniff for netscape 4 (including .1, .2, etc). As if that wasn't bad enough, I would have to sniff for netscape on a mac and netscape on a pc. To this day, I go into cardiac arrest when I think of the number of CSS files I had to maintain In conclusion, there is no reason (except for that one weird time when you are having problems with things looking 100% b/w browsers) to code for more than one browser. |
abhosts, I did some googling but cdnt find the national NYSC site (I guess someone forgot to make it SEO-compliant ). Do you happen to have that URL? I would like to look at it.Thanks, |
In addition, I wd like to add that if this is truly the first state nysc site online, then biggjoe, u might want to put in some more time in the event that ur site is used as the foundation upon which other state nysc sites r built. Thanks, |
krs1 and Afam, Thanks for the input. As far was width goes, I read in some article a year ago that majority of the world browses using 1024x768 and so I have been coding with such browsers in mind. Having said that, if my target audience in Nigeria uses 800x600, I guess I have no choice but to reduce the width. I will wait to see what my web stats reveal before making that decision ![]() Per graphics, lol, yeah I know. I will probably be adding more over time. For now, the site is up and functional. Pricing? I thought about adding some prices but backed off. I figured i at least lure the client in "for a kill " first. References to the company? LOL. I did it for SEO purposes, but taking a 10,000 feet view of the site, I guess I did overdo it. I will be editing the content over the weekend. Thanks once again. |
Lesson of the day: America is like any regular place on this planet. nothing special about it. It has poor people, corrupt people, bad elections, bad neighborhoods, etc. I don't know why so many people put it on a pedestal. Thanks to the internet and media outlets like CNN, our pple at home are seeing it for themselves. Don't get me wrong, it is better than Nigeria on any given day. However, that doesn't mean it is shielded from the struggles of life and that most certainly shouldn't stop anyone from wanting to be there. |
The journey has begun ![]() http://www.acewebdevelopment.net/ The only things that are left to implement are the favicon and setting up the Nigerian phone number (top right). Other than that, review away and may this venture of mine yield positive fruit - Amen! ![]() |
1) There is a horizontal scroll in both IE and FF - consider reducing the width of your container table/div 2) Why is the left nav flashing? Not good 3) Do white pple attend NYSC (I saw a couple in your header)? 4) Move your CSS and JS code into external files. I hope these help |
I would say, but for a few things I will note below, the site looks good: 1) Flash on home page took a while to load 2) Bobo's face on http://www.yemisanniandco.com/about.php look very, very scary (like he is on igbo or something )3) I would move the right nav on your sec pages to the left. I also noticed those navs don't work. I was looking forward to seeing members of the team ![]() 4) I could be wrong, but I don't recall seeing a link back to the home page. Oh, wait (after at least 5 seconds) - I see it as a very tiny icon at the top of the page. Not very intuitive, in my opinion. You might want to work on that 5) I am also curious as to why you chose to use images for your page titles ("About us" etc) I take it you aren't exactly finished with the site, which is fine. However, if that is the case, I would have set some expectations up front before introducing the site for review. I hope these help. |
wow, It looks like Akon burnt some major calories doing this ![]() http://smartenupnas.com/2007/04/19/akon-wukking-some-gyal-on-stage-in-trinidad/ |
1) The customer is always right - sad and ridiculous, but true 2) The customer is reason you are in business. So even if you feel like throwing them off 3rd Mainland bridge (does this bridge actually exist? I am just pulling the name out of a hat ), you have to pretend to be the happiest person on earth. The better you treat them, the better the chances of you milking them for more money. Why? because they feel like someone actually cares about them ![]() |
courtesy of Yahoo, from a conference a few of my co-workers attended recently: http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-9749841-7.html Of greater value in that article is a link to a FF plug-in that will analzye your sites for you, based on those 13 rules. Enjoy! |
Weeeell, I beg to disagree with you a little, somze. May I see the site that gave you the problems, in question (not to critique but so see where you may have gone wrong)? I am currently working on a project to be launched on aug 14 (I will share the link with you by then if you want). Though it is xhtml transitional, I used probably 90% CSS and stuck with web standards. I coded for it in firefox without concurrently testing on IE6/7, Safari or Opera (I know, my fault, I should have done it earlier and it goes against all I have said here ). At the end of front-end development, I was scared to look at the site on those browsers (kind of like that feeling you get when you hear your results are out ) but when I did, guess what? Other than a special safari hack, it looked consistent across the board.I hope this helps. |
Webmonk, I am still a 3rd-year student o! There is still much to learn. As a matter of fact, my employer just had us take the brainbench certification for css2, dhtml, javascript and jsp. Though I passed the css2, based on my score of 3.17/5.0, I am sure you will agree that I still have a long way to go. To toot my horn just a little, I did score higher than 87% of my co-workers (30 in number) ![]() Anyways, back to the brass tacks. This will further cement why I am not a prof. I am going to explain the box model the way I know best - in story form. I am sure the wiki has a better explanation: Letz say you have a container div of 120px. In that container, you want to have 3 inner divs (A, B, C: navigation, left column and right column) floated left (I am using floating here to illustrate my point). For easy math, letz just say we want each div width to be the same at 40px each. Well, as you may agree, the contents of each cell will be touching each other. If I were to tell you to increase the padding b/w each cell by 10px each and you did that, once you refreshed your browser, you will notice that the rightmost div has dropped such that it is below the first div. Why? because you have increased the total width from 120px to 120px + (10px * 3) = 150px (the container div is too small for the 3 divs and so it forces the rightmost div down). How to compensate for this? You would have to deduct the extra 10px from each of A, B and C to 30px each. That way, you are still maintaining the (30px + 10px = 40px) width for each cell. Make sense? Like I said, I am probably not the best teacher in the world and I am not that good at cramming stuff to give you the technical meaning. I learn better through example/experience and what I have explained above is based on that experience. If this isn't clear, let me know and I will try to explain it with another storyline. Thanks, |
do i hear a N4,000? ![]() |
I also feel as simple as the look is, it really could be simplier.POINT, How else would I have justified charging the guy as much as I did? ![]() On a serious note though, I beg to differ with the simplicity of the site you just showed me. I personally would take 10 "short" pages over one extra long page any day. |
A few months ago, Oprah had a show featuring a Nigerian who got caught trying to sell some kind of currency-making scheme to an ABC TV undercover journalist. At the end of the show, she said (paraphrasing) that so as not to get millions of emails, she is aware of Nigerians who aren't corrupt and who are hard-working individuals. I am sure you can search for the video on youtube to confirm. So for me to hear this 180-degree quote doesn't make sense. Having said that, granted I think those who fall for the scams are the actual corrupt ones for trying to embezzle funds from another's country, and most of these scamsters are actually not Nigerian but other nationals hiding under the "All Nigerians are corrupt" umbrella (refer to photos on http://www.419eater.com/html/hall_of_shame.htm for proof of this), na we do ourselves o! A few rotten apples have unfortunately spoiled the bunch. Regardless, I tout my nationality with pride. Anyone who dares approach me with that crap gets soaked, blued, bleached, washed, dried and starched to the point where the next time they hear "Nigeria", they get immediate diarrhoea ![]() |
I personally don't see why not. In the end, you are driving traffic to their site for them and they aren't paying you a kobo ![]() On the other hand, if they notice an increase in traffic from your site and for whatever reason, they would rather their URL not be that public, they might send you correspondence asking you to stop, failure of which may result in legal actions. I hope this helps. |
i blv such a "logo" is called a favicon and you can google for tutorials. I hope this helps. |
I think the only thing I would dissagree with you is the font size. If you think it looks busy now then it gets really messy with larger font. Then by all means, reduce content on the page(s) so it isn't that busy ![]() |
so: 1) font size is too small (yeah, I know you have an adjust font size thingie at the top, but if you put that up there, that tells me you really need to increase the size) 2) I had to scroll down to get to your navigation links. why? 3) perhaps cos of the blk background, the page seemed kind of busy. Coupled with the small font sizes, I found things hard to read. I hope these help. |
webmonk, unfortunately, that is naija govt for you o. Speaking for Akwa Ibom (AK) govt websites, there are many of them I have dug up via google (beyond page 10 of returned results It's amazing how things work there! Oh well, hopefully it shall be well one day. |
As most of you may know, google only accepted dashes as word separators. In other words, if you 2 file names, "naira-land.html" and "naira_land.html", google would read the former, for SEO purposes as "nairaland.html" and the latter as "naira land (note the intentional space).html". Now, apparently, google now (or will very soon) accepts underscores as word separators. http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-9748779-7.html Enjoy! |
