Politics / Senate Slams N10m Fine On Police For Killing UNIPORT Undergraduate by MYZOLE: 12:32pm On Dec 09, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcHWm0ng7yY

The Senate has indicted the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly killing a final year student of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Chinedu Obi, and mandated the police authorities to pay to his family N10m as compensation.

Obi, who was arrested on July 19, 2019 after a disagreement with a female phone seller for alleged assault, died in controversial circumstances in police custody, after being denied access to family members and medical care.

In a petition to the Senate by the counsel to the family, Omemiroro Ogedegbe, disclosed that the deceased went to Otta, Ogun State to visit his friend when he met his untimely death.

While testifying before the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petition, Ogedegbe said the deceased did not resist arrest contrary to police officer’s claim.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Ogbadu Aliyu, claimed that the deceased was arrested, detained and later granted bail and that after his release, he went back to the woman and started beating her and even tried to throw her from a story building.

Aliyu said the deceased, who was rearrested, became violent and tried to demobilise an officer, who shot him on his buttock instead of his legs.

But Ogedegbe, who disagreed with the presentation, stated that the deceased was shot from behind in the right buttock, “which meant that it was not the officer that shot him from behind.

“That all entreaties by the deceased who was in the pool of his own blood to speak with his father were rebuffed by the officers of the NPF who allowed him to die before taking him to Otta General Hospital.

“That the police officers lied as the deceased neither committed an offence, resisted arrest, nor armed at the point of his arrest.”

In the report presented to plenary, Chairman, Senate Committee, Ayo Akinyelure (Ondo Central), said the offence of assault alleged by the phone seller was not a capital offence and should not have led to the suspect’s arrest and handcuff.

He said: “The police officers did not handle the matter professionally and therefore, the force is culpable in the death of Obi.”

The Senate condemned the action of the police for the unprofessional manner it handled the civil matter between the phone seller and the late Obi.

At a session presided over by Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, the lawmakers urged the police to arrest the police officer who shot the late Obi to for prosecution, according to the laws of the land.

Politics / Senate Considers Bill To Blacklist Loan Defaulters by MYZOLE: 7:35am On Dec 09, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtR3fTZQGzg

The Senate on Tuesday, passed for second reading, a bill to allow banks recover loans from defaulters, place them on watchlist and eventually blacklist them without recourse to the borrowers.

The bill sponsored by Senator Sani Musa, is seeking an Act to establish a unified scheme for a sound financial system that will facilitate and improve credit repayment culture by empowering creditors bank to track loan defaulters.

Musa said the creditor banks would be able to do so through the means of the defaulters’ Bank Verification Number.

He said the bill would empower the creditor banks to recover the said loans from other accounts operated by the defaulters without recourse to the loan borrowers.

He also said the bill would provide penalties for breaches and violation of obligations and enhance loan recovery across banking sectors in Nigeria.

Musa noted that the core of financial system of any country is the commercial banks because they have the potential to apply the full weight of credit facilities for the development and growth of the country’s economy.

He said credit is seen as the bloodstream of the banking business, which oils the wheels of development.

He said, “The situation of Nigeria today demands an injection of healthy bank credit and recovery system that will effectively fasten the pace of the growth.

“However, every lending institution finds itself from time to time with loans of which the risk is loss is greater than anticipated.

“Lest we forget, before the deregulation of our banking system, the ability of our banks to recover loans has been the reason behind the collapse of many commercial banks.

“The principles behind this bill is to facilitate and improve credit repayment culture, streamline loan recovery and as well as watchlist frequent loan defaulters with a view to track and blacklist them.”

The Deputy President of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, who presided over the plenary, referred the bill to the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, for second reading.

Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has cautioned the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Prince Uche Secondus, against interfering in the party’s current reconciliation efforts.

Saraki warned that he and other members in the reconciliation committee, which he chairs, would not hesitate to resign if Secondus and his colleagues in the National Working Committee (NWC) disallowed the committee from having a free hand to operate.

He said: “We are, however, very clear that our most important partner in this assignment is the NWC. Therefore, we seek your support and cooperation to ensure the success of this committee on its Herculean assignment.

“As members of this committee, we have decided to do only what is right. We do not have any personal interest and will not allow any interest other than of the party and what represents the truth, equity, objectivity, unity and peace to influence what we will do.

“The NWC must also give us a free hand to operate. I want to make it very clear that we will put in our best. That is why we seek the cooperation of the NWC.

“However, if we see any sign that the NWC is working to undermine us or that we are not working in sync in the performance of this assignment, with all sense of responsibility, we will not hesitate to tender our resignation…”

Politics / Lawan, Abaribe Trade Words Over Conduct Of 2019 Polls by MYZOLE: 7:57pm On Dec 05, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmY8TV1Fn64

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan and Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe, yesterday, traded tackles over the authenticity of votes from the North East during the conduct of the 2019 presidential election.

The duo clashed when the Senate confirmed Professor Mahmood Yakubu as chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a second term.

Abaribe, had while making a case for a strong electoral system, questioned how INEC conducted elections in the North East in 2019 with huge turnout of voters and electoral victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) despite the ongoing insurgency war.

He said: “We’re happy that innovations have been brought and INEC has conducted some elections we can say were fair. We want to see more in the coming months. But I’m worried. I’m worried and want to know how INEC conducted elections in Boko Haram infested North East, particularly Borno and came up with the number we saw whereas, there was an insurgency war there.”

Abaribe was interjected by Lawan, who cautioned Abaribe. He said results from the North East were not allocated as being rumoured in many quarters. He said it was unfair to conclude that the people didn’t vote.

Meanwhile, the Senate has confirmed Professor Yakubu. Despite initial setbacks and plans to detail the confirmation, senators who took their turns to speak, said Yakubu has done well and should therefore be confirmed.

The senators drawn from the two political parties, however, called for more concerted efforts from INEC boss to ensure 2023 general elections do not have challenges.

Education / VIDEO: Senate Directs FG To Build E-validation Portal Against Fake Results by MYZOLE: 8:57am On Dec 04, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcY6ScGvjfc

The Senate on Thursday directed the Federal Ministry of Education to build and maintain for all tertiary institutions in Nigeria, an e-validation portal, to enable employers and relevant authorities or organization within and outside Nigeria, to verify and validate academic result/certificate obtained from tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

Starnews Nigeria reports that the decision was sequel to a motion by Senator Nicholas Tofowomo, the lawmaker representing Ondo South Senatorial District at the red chamber with the title: ”the urgent need to compel all tertiary institutions in Nigeria to subscribe to e-validation of results portal so that employers and relevant organisations within and outside Nigeria can verify the results of Nigerian graduates.

Senator Tofowomo noted that the use of fake results/certificates by Nigerians to work in the Ministry, Department, and Agency (MDA’s) and private organisations, and the use of same, to run for elective offices in Nigeria, is very disturbing and embarrassing.

The motion partly reads: ”Note that in Nigeria today, many unqualified and dubious people are riding to the corridor of power with fake certificate results even when the minimum qualification to run for the highest office of the land is a school certificate.”

”That suspected corrupt tertiary institutions’ personnel are aiding and abetting this evil menace which has become a source of embarrassment to Nigeria in the comity of nations.”

”More concerned that Thisday Newspaper, on December 4, 2019, quoted Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, the Executive Secretary of NUC that about 100 fake professors were uncovered in our higher institutions.”

After presentation, the motion was seconded by Senator Betty Apiafi (PDP Rivers West) with little amendments and the Senate resolved as follows:

i. THAT the Federal Ministry of Education should build and maintain for all tertiary institutions in Nigeria, an E-validation portal, to enable employers and relevant authorities or organization within and outside Nigeria, to verify and validate academic result/certificate obtained from tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

ii. THAT the Federal Ministry of Education should compel all tertiary institutions in Nigeria to subscribe to the E-validation result portal proposed in the (1) above, like the WAEC, NECO and the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) portals to verify, authenticate and validates results/certificates obtained from tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

iii. THAT all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and all employers of labour to use the portal as proposed in (1) above to check, verify and authenticate academic results/certificates brought before them in the course of employment/recruitment into respective offices.

Speaking with Starnews Nigeria in a telephone interview, the Ondo South Senator said the chain of fake degrees and school certificates being paraded by Nigerians in the political sector, ministry and industrial sectors respectively can not be overemphasised which hence his reason for the motion.

”Just as we have fake professors, so also we have fake lawyers, fake medical doctors, fake engineers and many others parading themselves with fake results.

”It is a recurrence national malaise because of the poor database in our institutions and lack of e- validation of result portal across our tertiary institutions. This is why I think this motion is urgently needed as a matter of public importance, Senator Tofowomo told Starnews Nigeria correspondent on phone.

Politics / Senate Moves To Make Nigerian Law School Beneficiary Of TETFUND by MYZOLE: 9:37am On Nov 27, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbL0WOWtKnc

THE Senate has begun moves to ensure that all the Nigerian Law Schools are beneficiaries of Education tax funds with the amendment of Tertiary Education Trust Fund Act 2007.

Consequently, the Senate has come up with ” A bill for an Act to amend the Tertiary Education Trust Fund Act 2007.”

The Bill Scaled second reading yesterday in the Senate.

In his lead debate on the bill, Senator Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele, APC Ekiti Central, sponsor of said that the bill which was read for the first time on the floor of the Senate on Thursday, 28th May, 2020, seeks to amend sections 4, 7 and 20 of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (Establishment, Etc.) Act, 2011 (hereinafter referred to as the “principal Act”)

He said that amendment also seeks to add the Nigerian Law School, as one of the benefiting tertiary institutions in Nigeria, for the purpose of disbursement of education tax, under the Act.

According to him, the Bill seeks specifically to amend section 4 of the principal Act by inserting “the Nigerian Law School”, as one of the Tertiary Institutions, to benefit from the interventions of the TETFUND.

Senator Bamidele said, “Mr President, Distinguished Colleagues; by way of a proper context and historical basis for the proposed amendment, it is imperative to state here that the Report of the Unsworth Committee on Legal Education, which recommended the establishment of an indigenous law school for the vocational training of aspiring legal practitioners in Nigeria, conceived the Nigerian Law School, as a tertiary institution with the sole mandate of bridging the gap between academic study of law in Nigerian or foreign universities, and the practical application of the law.

“Based on this, it therefore becomes incumbent on the Nigerian Law School to ensure that students adapt their academic knowledge to the conditions of practice by introducing them to the practical skills and techniques of legal practice.

“There is no gainsaying that the Nigerian Law School is the only institution responsible for vocational training of lawyers in Nigeria. Undoubtedly, it is saddled with a critical statutory responsibility bearing in mind that lawyers play leading roles in the socio-economic condition of the country.

” Perhaps, Lawyers, as judges, in private or corporate practice, in the academics or in government, immensely shape the society and the lives of their fellow human beings. It should be emphasised that over five decades, since the establishment of the Nigerian Law School, the Institution which commenced operation in January 1963 with only 8 Students at its mono-campus in Lagos, has since expanded rapidly into a multi-campus Law School, with its headquarters now in Bwari, Abuja and Five (5) other campuses in Lagos, Enugu Kano, Bayelsa, and Yola.

“Mr President, Distinguished Colleagues; the expansion of the Nigeria Law School from its former mono-campus system to the present multi-campus law school, was necessitated by the increasing demand for space at the school.

“This inevitable expansion, of course, has its attendant challenges such as increasing demand for befitting learning facilities including lecture halls, E- Library and ICT deployment in the multiple –campuses to enhance learning, provision of hostel accommodation and other infrastructural facilities suitable for effective training of globally competitive lawyers in Nigeria. Indeed, the training of the 21st century lawyer is becoming more and more expensive hence the need for this Distinguished Senate to consider the inclusion of the Nigerian Law school, as one of the tertiary institutions to benefit from the infrastructural intervention projects of TETFUND, which is the main thrust of this amendment.”

This video shows a young man who is part of a larger group of criminals that have been terrorising shop owners in Benin City.

Mere looking at him with his toothbrush and toothpaste at night, one will think he only came out to brush his teeth.

Unfortunately for him, his luck ran out and he was caught as he was about breaking into a shop.

Further investigation shows that the toothbrush he is holding is indeed an electronic one that has been modified and fittest with a chisel like iron.

He then uses it to drill the padlocks that have been used to lock up the shops and then gives signal to his accomplices who come and cart away valuables from the shops.
