Amagite3: Newly engaged Linda Ikeji has just taken to Twitter to advise women to desist from talking to men the way Cee-C did to Tobi today.
Cee-C has been been verbally abusing Tobi for over an hour now, and the young man kept his cool. Linda wrote;
"Dear women, never talk to a man the way CeeC has spoken to Tobi today no matter how provoked you are. It's almost a sin! And of course, it goes both ways! #BBNaija"
Despite the uncertainty caused by the influx of members of the Shiite sect into the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, science supporters in Nigeria trooped out in their numbers to join more than 1 million people in over 600 locations across the world to march in support of science.
Enthusiastic science lovers made up of scientists, farmers, civil society groups, lawyers and journalists took to the streets in Abuja to stand up for science and sensitise Nigerians on the importance of science and its role in the overall socio-economic development of the nation.
The science enthusiasts spoke with one voice and had a unified message which was their belief in science as a game-changer that can jump-start rapid development and revolutionalise all sectors of the economy with emphasis on the health, and the development of vaccines; environment, and the potential to tackle climate change; agriculture, and the potentials of adopting and applying scientific tools such as biotechnology in revolutionising the sector and enhancing food security.
The Nigeria March for Science 2018, themed, “Science and technology: An agent for economic development” was organised by the Ministry of Science and Technology; the National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA); the Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB) in Africa, Nigeria Chapter and the Cornell Alliance for Science (CALS).
Welcoming participants, the overseeing director-general of NABDA, Mr Abayomi Oguntunde, said the rally sought to create awareness and sensitise the populace on the many ways science serves our communities and our world, as well as to encourage the public to value science, treasure science, respect science, invest in science, appreciate and engage with science.
Oguntunde said: “The life of everyone of us is highly dependent on scientific inventions, innovations and modern-day technologies. Science has changed the lives of people largely which as we all know, have been deployed to every aspect of modernization and in sectors like agriculture, medicine, environment, education, industry, electricity, aviation, information, etc for both developing and developed nations. Modern science in Nigeria is awakened by the continuous and hard efforts of the outstanding scientists and researchers who attempt scientific advances of highest international calibre.
“Just like other scientists across the world, Nigerian scientists have developed various scientific tools that can help in the area of food security, combating climate change which the public have not been fully aware of. This march for science therefore, has provided yet another opportunity for science supporters to come together, join voices to amplify available science-based solutions the nation can adopt to ensure food security.”
According to him, “At the current population of over 180 million people and projected population of 400 million people by 2050, Nigeria is faced with the risk of decreased farming population due to age; decreased arable land; poverty; malnutrition and hunger because conventional method of agriculture can no longer meet up with our demand. Science holds the solution to our food security.”
Oguntunde represented by the agency’s chief scientific officer, Mr Osino Christian, restated that science is revolutionary and holds the key to constant improvement for addressing climate change, food shortage and challenges in medicine.
Earlier, the OFAB Nigeria chapter's country coordinator, Dr Rose Gidado, listed the goals of the march to include humanizing science as science is first a human process, saying Nigerians viewed science as abstract and did not know there are scientists in Nigeria; support scientists by speaking up for them and amplifying their voices; and partner with the public, by engaging the communities in the research process.
She said the objectives of the march were to build capacity, gain publicity, and demonstrate strength and solidarity in science to decision-makers; reemphasise the role of science in national development; create an open, honest science communication and inclusive public outreach; and affirm science as a democratic value, describing it as a vital feature of a working democracy.
Gidado empahsised that the sensitization would not end with the march, pointing out that the agency would continually engage the public and sensitise them on the enormous potentials available in science all year round.
In his message, Nigeria’s Science Ambassador, and Nollywood superstar, Paul Obazele, said science is not fiction and likened it to what is done in the movie world, pointing out that it goes through laid down processes to a logical conclusion. He stressed the need for enhanced public awareness drive and sensitization of science and its potentials, adding most Nigerians are ignorant of science and the amazing potentials it holds for revolutionising the nation.
Giving reasons behind their staunch support and active participation in the march, farmers under the aegis of All Famers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) said the work of scientists in the lab, has the potential to change the fortune of farmers.
AFAN's vice president, Chief Daniel Okafor, said: “Scientists cannot do their work without the farmers, farmers must be involved because they are direct beneficiaries of biotechnology. For instance, when you go to countries like Brazil, Argentina, South Africa and Argentina, famers are in the forefront of agricultural biotechnology. Biotechnology has the potential to lift farmers.”
He also urged government to fund science so scientists and researchers could come up with more research breakthrough that can positively affect the populace and the entire nation invariably.
ChangeIsCostant: Is this the new way forward? This is the question being asked by Nigerian internet users following the recent clampdown by security operatives on some guys in Potiskum, Yobe state. According to trending report, a young man was arrested recently for keeping an Afro hair.
He was arrested and taken into custody by the task force set up for that purpose by the state government.
The arrested men are said to be made to barb the hair and also pay a fine of N600.

Diverse opinions have greeted news about the suspension of Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial district, Ovie Omo-Agege for 90 legislative days by the Nigerian Senate last Thursday.
The Senator, a member of the ruling APC, was reportedly suspended for championing the opposition to the National Assembly's elections reordering bill and the subsequent court case he instituted in court to avoid being punished. Who does that in a true democratic dispensation?
Some of the opinions expressed over the suspension have been constructive, some objective while some are fit only as beer parlour discussion and opinions.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, while taking his time to explain the decision of the Senate on the issue last Thursday, emphasized the need for Senators to respect and preserve the INTEGRITY of the Senate.
It was quite obvious that Senator Omo-Agege was laying a very bad precedence in the Senate, through his latest actions especially as it bothers on the elections reordering bill and subsequent institution of a court case to evade attempt by the Senate to wiled its big stick that has been used on erring members in the past. He was becoming a divisive element, which if not quickly nipped in the bud could lay a terrible foundation in the Senate and a reference point of rebellion, destabilization and division.
When an institution loses integrity in whatever it does, respect also diminishes and such institution becomes only a carcass, a paper tiger, with no power to take action when and where necessary. This is what the politically discerned believe the Senate was trying to avoid with the suspension of Omo-Agege. A good step in the right direction.
More so, any house that rises against itself will not stand, it will fall like a pack of cards, the Bible was explicit on this.
From the actions of Omo-Agege and his gang, it is obvious that their opposition to the election reordering bill and the court case instituted by Omo-Agege himself are all orchestrated plan to curry the favour of the Presidency. Probably they are doing all to get party's ticket on a platter of gold or for soft landing at the primary, who knows? Only them and time can tell.
Meanwhile, the action and desperation of some Parliamentarians in search of favour from the Executive must not and should never be allowed to be the harbinger that would make the hallowed chamber lose its sanctity, respect and integrity.
While we are not arguing that the National Assembly should always stand as an opposition to the Executive arm even when the Executive mean well, there is a need for checks and balances, the Nigerian political system have long grown beyond the era when the Senate used to be an appendage of the Executive and we cannot afford to go back to that era. It is dangerous for our present democracy and the future of our democracy.
That is why many of us who do not belong to the same political party with the Senate President will always commend his patriotism at any given time.
At several occasions, Saraki has genuinely displayed that loyalty to the country and the constitution shouldn't be sacrificed at the altar of loyalty to the party. Party may die tomorrow, but country will always remain. Since Nigeria gained Independence in 1960, the country has had several political parties, with many dying naturally after some time, while the country remains. So political gladiators must always watch their actions and not allow personal interest override national interest that may plunder the nation into chaos.
Party will go, country remains. This should be the watchword for political office holders. Only if they put this on the tablet of their hearts as they take on public offices, the nation would be fairing better.
For any institution to thrive and achieve its set goals, there must be discipline and this is what the Senate displayed last Thursday with the suspension of Omo-Agege. There must be high level of integrity on which respect can be commanded, which will on the long run save the institution from being a carcass.
The Senate has set a good standard for the future, it must be commended for its leniency in handling the matter by limiting the suspension to 90-days.

AutoJoshNG: Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday said that the State Government would immediately take over the ABAT Truck Terminal Orile-Iganmu and commence immediate repairs on the terminal as part of efforts to permanently address the perennial traffic in Apapa axis majorly caused by breakdown of operations at the ports.
Governor Ambode, who disclosed this at the 2nd Quarter 2018 Town Hall Meeting, the 11th in the Series, held at the Apapa Amusement Park, said he was seriously concerned about the hardship residents in the axis were being subjected to as a result of the activities of containerized trucks and tankers moving in and out of the ports and tank farms, hence the decision to hold the meeting in the area to find lasting solutions.
“I cannot end this address without acknowledging that in Apapa, we have a major challenge; the menace of trucks on our roads and bridges causing endless traffic and loss of business time by Lagosians. This is why we have come here today. To see for ourselves and find a solution.
“Effective today, our government will take over the ABAT Truck Terminal Orile-Iganmu and commence immediate repairs to make the park ready for effective use. In the meantime, we will appeal to the Tanker Drivers Association to conduct themselves in an orderly manner and cooperate with our Task Force to ensure smooth flow of traffic and better access to the Ports.
“We thank the people of Apapa for enduring such harsh conditions but I assure you that this situation will be a thing of the past by the end of this year,” he said.
Governor Ambode said the ABAT Truck Terminal has a capacity to accommodate at least 3000 trucks, adding that the government was already working with security agencies to see how some of the trucks parked on the Western Avenue Bridge would be moved into the park.
“Already, we have cleared the shanties and the way we are trying to run it is such that we will be able to accommodate at least 3,000 trucks in the park. In addition to that, we will work with security agencies and see how we can move the trucks into the park because right now the park can accommodate about 300 trucks but the people are not using it.
“So, if I tell you that one of the areas that I always feel very bad about is this Apapa gridlock and that is the truth and that is why I have decided that lets bring all our resources together; let’s discuss with people; let’s also talk to the experts and see what is happening there,” he said.

GistRealm: Mr Kolawole Viyon has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for loeing about his marital status while applying for UK Visa in Nigeria, by an Ikeja Special offences court.
The man was dragged to court following a petition received from British High Commission to ICPC
At the resumed hearing of the case yesterday, the ICPC through its counsel, Gogodoye West, told the court that the defendant and his accomplice, Olaronke Akerele, had committed the offence on December 13th 2016.
West said officials of the British High Commission in 2016 handed over Viyon and his accomplice, now at large, to the ICPC, for giving false information in their visa application forms. ''In his extrajudicial statement volunteered under caution before Mrs. Nkem Ezenwa, an investigating officer with the ICPC, he made a false statement that Olaronke Akerele is his third and legally married wife. Viyon informed Ezenwa and Mr. Kenneth Agba, another investigating officer of the ICPC, that the marriage ceremony between him and Akerele was conducted by an Imam under Islamic law. The defendant said the marriage was evidenced by a certificate with number JUN/LB/0000064 which is dated January 9, 2016 and issued by the Jama-at-ul-Islamiyya of Nigeria. Viyon also lied that he had signed the marriage certificate and that the ceremony was conducted at No 108 Tokunboh St., Lagos Island, Lagos.
Viyon claimed he was married but investigations by ICPC however showed that Viyon and Akerele were never married and that the marriage certificate issued by the Jama-at-ul-Islamiyya of Nigeria to that effect was fake.
When the charges were read to him, Viyon pleaded guilty. Delivering judgement, Justice Mojisola Dada, said the accused person was guilty as charged. The presiding judge however aksed the accused to pay N.3m fine in lure of the jail term, adding that the fine must be paid within 24 hours after the judgement was delivered.
