One person was killed following the invasion of displaced hippopotamuses in the Guyuk and Shelleng Local Government Areas of Adamawa State.
The Chairman of Guyuk Local Government, Mr Shalom Kassa, said on Monday in the Banjiram community, that a young man was reportedly killed by one of the animals during the attack.
Kassa said the hippopotamuses, displaced by flooding around the Kiri Dam in Shelleng, were now within communities, farmlands, and riverbanks, causing fear among residents.
“This is a serious threat to human lives and means of livelihoods; the animals are destroying farmlands, invading flooded homes, and endangering residents and livestock,” he said.
In response, Kassa alongside the Chairman of Shelleng Local Government, Alhaji Abubakar Abba, and traditional rulers, including Kwandi Nunguraya of Guyuk, Kuruhaye, had visited the seat of government in Yola for help.
Kassa explained that persistent flooding across several parts of the state, especially in Guyuk and Shelleng, had forced the animals out of their natural habitat and into populated areas.
He added that residents were unable to defend themselves as existing laws prohibited the killing or harming of wildlife, including hippopotamuses.
“We are appealing to the state Ministry of Environment, wildlife officials, and relevant agencies to urgently intervene before more lives are lost,” he said.
Kassa also extended his condolences to the victims of recent flooding in Yola town, where five persons reportedly died and 55 others were hospitalised.
Secretary to the State Government, Mr Awwal Tukur, who received the delegation, assured them that the government would address the situation.
A yet-to-be-identified man has been killed by gunmen at Ojo-Igbede in the Ojo area of Lagos State.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident occurred on Saturday, July 19.
Our correspondent gathered that the victim had stepped out to buy a plate of food from a vendor in the community when two men on a motorcycle approached him.
An eyewitness who craved anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the incident told our correspondent on Saturday that the two unidentified assailants who wore caps forced the deceased victim to kneel and shot him in the process.
Other customers present at the scene were said to have scampered for safety.
The source said, “The victim is new in this area, and no one knew his name. He had only come out to buy cooked food. While he was in the queue with others, two men on a motorcycle arrived at the spot and beckoned to him to come. The moment he moved close to them, they asked him to lie down. At first, he declined. He obliged shortly after, and that was when he was shot in the head. He had barely spent five minutes when the attack happened.”
In a photo sent to PUNCH Metro, the deceased was seen lying in a pool of blood as residents gathered around him.
An anti-cultism advocacy page on X also shared details of the incident, stating that the deceased had just moved into the area.
“Another man was killed in Ojo in the second video. Aye cultists claimed it, but there was controversy surrounding the victim’s affiliation. Sources confirmed that the victim had just moved into the area and went out to buy cooked food.”
While waiting for his turn, men on a bike called him out, told him to kneel (others said lie down), then shot him in the head multiple times before driving away,” the platform stated.
Another resident who gave his name simply as Bode said the incident caused panic in the community.
He said, “There was serious panic in the area after the incident, and this made us work more on our security because we don’t know who is next.”
Efforts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, on Sunday, were unsuccessful as calls to his line went unanswered. A text message sent to him had yet to be replied to as of the time this report was filed.
PUNCH Metro reported on Friday that the Lagos State Police Command arrested three suspects for stabbing a man, identified as Scoro, to death during a public brawl in the Lagos Island area of the state.

The Ondo State Police Command, on Monday, confirmed the arrest of one Augustina Mowari, who allegedly killed her boyfriend, Michael Ikuedowoni, in the state.
The suspect allegedly stabbed the deceased to death following an argument that ensued between them over the issue of infidelity on Sunday at Okitipupa community, the headquarters of the Okitipupa Local Government Area of the state.
Speaking on the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Olayinka Ayanlade, said the suspect had been arrested and is currently in custody. He said the command had commenced an investigation into the matter.
The PPRO said, “There was an argument between the two, which led to the suspect stabbing the victim with scissors. He later died in the hospital.
“The suspect is in our custody, and the case will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.”
A source explained that the two lovebirds had been cohabiting in a one-room apartment and had been having persistent issues over trust and suspected cheating, adding that the misunderstanding between the lovers escalated into violence.
The source said, “Both of them had been having issues. The lady accused Michael of cheating on her with another woman, which led to a heated argument. In the course of the fight, she brought out a pair of scissors and stabbed him in the leg.
“Michael was initially taken to a nearby hospital, where he received treatment and was discharged after being administered injections and prescribed medication.
“After being discharged, his condition deteriorated at home. His leg became swollen, and he was rushed back to the hospital on Sunday night. Unfortunately, he passed away despite the doctors’ efforts to save him.”
