BusinessRe: How Do I Solve This Erroneous Transaction Error? by NaijaCover(m): 4:55pm On Jul 23, 2025
Cutezt:
Yesterday, I attempted to pay my mechanic the remaining balance of N128,000 for car repairs via my Opay app. I had previously paid him part of the amount. He provided the first four digits of his GTBank account, and an account appeared in my app after entering them. I confirmed with him that it was a GTBank account, and he agreed, so I transferred the funds.

A few hours later, the mechanic informed me he hadn’t received the money. Initially, we suspected a network delay and agreed to wait until today. However, this morning, he confirmed the funds were not credited, and I discovered I had sent the money to the wrong account. Shockingly, the recipient’s account shared the same first four digits, was also with GTBank, and both account holders have Yoruba Muslim names, an unlikely coincidence.

Upon checking my transaction receipt, I realized the account was one I had sent money to previously, which is why it appeared in my app. I immediately contacted Opay, but they stated they couldn’t initiate a recall because only the first four digits matched. They advised me to contact GTBank to obtain the recipient’s details or request a refund from the recipient. GTBank, however, refused to assist unless Opay contacts them, and Opay insists they cannot act due to the mismatch in account numbers. I’m at a loss on how to resolve this issue, as neither Opay nor GTBank is providing actionable assistance.

Is there a way to retrieve the recipient’s details using the transaction session ID or account number? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

CrimeArmy & DSS Rescue Father Alphonsus Afina Kidnapped By Boko Haram In Borno by NaijaCover(op): 11:47am On Jul 22, 2025
The Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigerian Army have successfully rescued a Catholic priest, Reverend Father Alphonsus Afina who was abducted by Boko Haram insurgents.

Rev. Fr. Afina, who served in the Archdiocese of Anchorage in Alaska, U.S., from 2017 until 2024, was abducted on June 1, 2025, while traveling along the Liman Kara–Gwoza Road in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

The priest, alongside 10 women, was rescued on Monday, July 21 during a coordinated security operation by DSS operatives in Borno, with tactical support from troops of the Nigerian Army. No ransom was paid for the release of the captives.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Catholic Bishop of Maiduguri Diocese, Most Rev. John Bakeni, hailed the professionalism, gallantry, and intelligence-led approach of the DSS and military forces involved in the operation.

Bakeni, who also serves as Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Borno State, described the rescue as “a moment of profound relief and joy for the Church and all lovers of peace and justice.”

“The news of Fr. Afina’s rescue after nearly two months in captivity brought immense joy to the Catholic community, both in Nigeria and abroad,” Bakeni said. He revealed that Fr. Afina was on his way from Mubi in Adamawa State to Maiduguri when insurgents ambushed his convoy near a military checkpoint,” he said.

“The attackers reportedly launched a rocket-propelled grenade at one of the vehicles, killing one passenger and abducting others.”

The bishop called for continued collaboration between security agencies and communities to defeat insurgency and other threats to national peace.

Meanwhile, the DSS in Zamfara State, in a similar joint operation with Nigerian Army troops, rescued 32 kidnap victims from the Shinkafi axis of the state.

Security sources Zagazola Makama that the victims, comprising 27 women and five boys, had spent between two and four months in captivity.

The victims were reportedly rescued from makeshift camps hidden in forested areas and were later handed over to the Zamfara State Government for medical attention and documentation.

The dual rescue operations reflect growing inter-agency cooperation in Nigeria’s ongoing war against terrorism and armed banditry.

Violence broke out in the Alaba Rago area of Iba, Lagos State, on Sunday following a confrontation between road transport workers, commonly known as agberos, and supporters of a local traditional ruler.

The unrest resulted in the death of a yet-to-be-identified pedestrian who was fatally struck by a speeding vehicle during the chaos.

The incident reportedly followed the unveiling of a new motor park in the area, allegedly established by the monarch to serve vehicles travelling to Nigeria’s northern and eastern regions. The facility, which was launched over the weekend, is said to have sparked tension among existing transport workers, who viewed it as a threat to their control over the park system and revenue collection in the area.

Residents of the community said the conflict began in the early hours of Sunday, intensifying as both groups confronted one another near the newly constructed park. Amid the fracas, a pedestrian attempting to cross the road was hit by an oncoming vehicle, leading to fatal injuries. The victim died on the spot.

Footage shared by local sources showed a disturbing scene at the site of the incident, where concerned residents gathered around the body. In one clip, bystanders were seen using a wrapper to shield the remains from view.

In response to the unrest, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed that measures had been taken to restore calm. Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin said the state’s Commissioner of Police had visited the area for an on-the-spot assessment and met with the involved parties at the command headquarters in Ikeja the following day.

Efforts, according to the police, are ongoing to broker peace and prevent further escalation of the conflict.

A man identified as Amos Daniel has been arrested for allegedly killing a woman believed to be his girlfriend in a hotel located in the Ayobo area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the incident occurred on Thursday.

It was gathered that Daniel checked into the hotel around 5 pm with some friends, while a female joined them later.

A strange noise was, however, heard from their room at about 10 pm, drawing the attention of others in the hotel.

Speaking to our correspondent on Saturday, one of the guests who identified himself simply as Adio said the security unit was immediately alerted, and upon opening the room, he discovered the lifeless body of the deceased.

I checked in on Wednesday, but on that fateful evening, I started hearing a strange sound from the room beside mine. I was so curious, and by the time I later stepped out, I noticed that someone else who heard the noise had alerted a security operative, who came and said he had heard the same noise. So, he knocked, but no one responded. Then, they decided to use the spare key to open the door, and that was when they found a lady lying in a pool of blood.”

It was gathered that the manager and other workers in the hotel quickly raised the alarm after the discovery.

This also led to a frantic search for the other occupants of the room, who had fled the scene.

A staff member who craved anonymity as he was not permitted to speak with the media said Daniel was caught on the premises where he went to hide.

He said, “We noticed two out of the three guests had left before we discovered the body, so we felt the third one could still be around. That was when we began searching the premises and in the process saw him trying to run towards the gate. He was later apprehended.”

Daniel was said to have been beaten on the spot before the police were invited.

He confessed while he was being beaten that he had conspired with his two other friends to kill her for ritual purposes,” the source added.

Checks by our correspondent revealed that the deceased was identified as Endurance and a native of Akwa Ibom State.

When contacted on Sunday, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident.

According to him, the incident was reported at the Ayobo Police Station on Friday by the hotel manager.

He said, “The manager of a hotel situated at Ayobo came to the station and reported that at about 1 pm on Thursday, one Amos Daniel (male), whose house address is unknown, booked a room in his hotel and checked in at about 5 pm together with his friends.

“However, at about 8 pm, while the complainant was fuelling the hotel generator, he suddenly heard a strange noise coming from Amos Daniel’s room. In a bid to inquire about the cause of the noise, he sighted the lifeless body of a female adult in a pool of her blood with various injuries inflicted on her by a suspected sharp object.

“Amos Daniel and his cohorts fled the scene. The manager pursued and apprehended Amos Daniel, during which a dagger suspected to have been used in committing the heinous crime fell from his body.”

He added that a team of detectives promptly visited the scene while photographs were taken.

He further disclosed that the victim was stabbed several times on the stomach, left side of the head, and upper side of her ribs.

“Consequent upon preliminary investigation, the following exhibits were recovered from the house and premises of Amos Daniel: UTC axe, cutlass, machete, jack knives, laptop, service jungle boot, local sponge, and a big pair of scissors.

“The corpse has been evacuated and deposited at Mainland General Hospital, Yaba mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Both the case file, exhibits, and the suspect have been transferred to SCID Yaba for discreet investigation,” he added.

PUNCH Metro reported in February that the Lagos State Police Command arrested a 23-year-old man, Gbolahan Adebayo, for allegedly beating his girlfriend to death at Ijedodo in the Alimosho Local Government Area of the state.

The incident was said to have occurred during the deceased’s visit to the suspect’s house.

A resident who identified himself simply as Akin told our correspondent that the 23-year-old victim was heard screaming for help around midnight while being beaten by her boyfriend.

Akin added that Adebayo later raised the alarm at daybreak after he found out she was no longer responsive after the assault.

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects for their involvement in a self-orchestrated kidnap and a foiled extortion attempt in the state.

The two suspects, whose names were given as Chinecherem Okonkwo (female), a 28-Year-Old female student of Enugu State University of Science and Technology, and Chinecherem Aronu (male), age 30 Years, were said to have masterminded their own kidnapping and used an unknown voice to demand a ransom of N10 million from the family.

This was disclosed in a press statement released on Monday by the spokesman for the Anambra State police, SP Tochukwu Ikenga.

Ikenga said operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, acting on an intelligence-led investigation of a disturbing report of the alleged abduction of a female student, arrested the suspects at a lodge located at UNIZIK Temp Site, Awka.

The statement said, “The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two suspects involved in a self-orchestrated kidnap incident designed to extort money from the victim’s own family.

“The suspects are Chinecherem Okonkwo ‘f’ age 28 Years Old and Chinecherem Aronu ‘m’ age 30 Years Old.

“Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad acting on an intelligence-led investigation of a disturbing report of alleged abduction of Chinecherem Nwaokoye, a female student of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), stormed a lodge located at UNIZIK Temp Site, Awka, where the victim was found alive and in the company of her male accomplice.

“According to the report, Chinecherem had earlier contacted her family on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, informing them that she was returning home from school but never arrived.

“Her phone remained switched off throughout that day. On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, her family received a call from an unknown male voice who claimed responsibility for her kidnapping and demanded a ransom of ₦10 million only.

“After negotiations, the ransom was reduced to ₦3,000,000, and a part payment of ₦1,000,000 was later paid into the victim’s bank account.”

According to Ikenga, upon interrogation, the duo confessed to staging the kidnapping as a plot to extract money from the victim’s family.

He added that the female suspect, Nwaokoye, admitted she masterminded the plan after watching a movie and intended to give the money to her boyfriend to start a business.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has directed that the suspects be charged to court without delay and condemned the incident as a clear sign of deepening moral decay among some youths in the society.

“He warned that the Command will not tolerate such criminal deception and called on parents and guardians to pay closer attention to the activities and peer influence on their children,” he added.
