Helo people
I need ideas on how to fence a plot of land and ultimately to build a house in Nigeria without using a contractor or an Engineer. What are the cost implcations of all these Thanks in anticipation for your valuable contributions

I just fenced two plots for N423,000.00 without using a contractor and I think I was 419ed.  I would advise that you get at least three estimates before u embark on this.

Celebrities / Re: Dying to Meet Richard Mofe-Damijo (RMD) by naijarikan(m): 7:04pm On Feb 27, 2007
Hey ladies:

If you want to meet Richard & Jim I think you should try 'bumping' into them at Silverbird if you're in Lagos. I've met both of them a couple of times just hanging out at Silverbird. Richard was polite and pleasant to talk with and was very patient when my brother couldn't figure out my camera to snap our foto. I, however, never approached Jim because he seemed like a snobish gangster (in my opinion).
Politics / Re: Donald Rumsfeld Resigns! by naijarikan(m): 9:54pm On Nov 09, 2006
Ynot:

US is not Nigeria. First, elected officials are held accountable for their actions in US congress. Second, its clear the election is a referendum on the war in Iraq. People are tired of losing their loved ones in an unnecessary war. Rumsfeld and Cheney were the architect of this war without planned exit strategy. Saddam has been captured and recently convicted. Its time for the US soldiers to leave Iraq.

They are gunning for Cheney next. The $9 billion missing from Iraq fund must be accounted for. Halliburton contracts must be reviewed. There will be a lot of subpoena and questions. People must be held accountable. Thats what voters want and the Dems will deliver.

KPOM! X5 cool Mr Bush has been running this country like his family business. This is what you get when one party controls the White House, the senate, and congress. Now there is going to be checks and balances. Rumsfeld 'resigning' is a political move by the republicans in order to save face otherwise the democrats would be hauling his ass into congress to answer a lot of questions.

Politics / Nigerian-Americans: Did You Vote Today? by naijarikan(m): 8:31pm On Nov 07, 2006
Today is the mid term elections where all members of the Congress and about 60% of Senate face reelection.  This is crucial because this will more or less determine if George Bush will remain a lame duck president for the next two years.  I find the new design of Illinois ballot paper, which is about 20 X 10 inches, to be extremely eazy to complete.  During  past elections where you have to punch holes in the ballot that created the 'hanging' and 'dimple' chad debacle,  this time, all you have to do is to join two straight lines together with an ink pen.  When you are finished, you proceed to insert the ballot into an electronic counting machine that validates your vote or immediately indicate if there are any errors on your ballot.

There are people who opted for the computer touch screen voting.  I would have loved this method except that voters kept calling the election judges for help because the system kept shutting down and screens kept freezing.  I certainly hope this is not the method Nigeria is proposing for next year's election!
Business / Re: I Need A Lawyer To Help Me Sue Tastee Fried Chicken by naijarikan(m): 8:34pm On Oct 25, 2006
This is a basic non-liability issue (pardon me, I am not a lawyer). Tastee will not be held liable even in the event that your vehicle was stolen, damaged, or rendered useless by fire unless Tastee has possession of your keys. Ndo. embarassed

Old Glory:

Naijarikan

You got your info from where? Some members of the US senate and house scolded the State debt for charging US citizens, that is about it. The house has not passed any resolution that i know of. Where did you get your gist from?

I believe I heard this on CSPAN but it might well be the 'scolding' session you mentioned.  And yes there has not been a resolution yet, but as you know we are in an election year coupled with the embarrassment this has caused the US I am certain the gov won't be sending those invoices to its citizens.  wink

Seun:

They are only being required to issue I owe you notes. They aren't being left behind or paying upfront.

What about those being left behind because they are not Americans? Are they dogs? Are they not human beings too? So why are "sensitive" people like you not asking for them to be evacuated too? So this is not about sensitivity!

It's about responsibility. The US government has classified those areas as danger zones, yet some people believe that they need to be there. If an emergency arises then those people should be willing to pay. Simple responsibility.

Not all evacuees are vacationers.  After the Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon in 2000, the state department has actually increased its staff in Lebanon.  There are also many American news organization employees working and living in the affected area.  So are you saying that it's OK for those who are visiting their families to pay while gov workers should get a free ride?

The law regarding American citizens needing assistance to return home be it in a hostile environment or otherwise is obsolete and ought to be revised and the moment has arrived.  I remember a few years ago when the son of our neighbor in Lagos came to visit from America (he is a US citizen).  This guy bought a one-way ticket coming to Naija and after about three months in Lagos he ran out of money but it was also time to go back.  Unable to secure funds from family and friends, he simply walked into the US embassy in Lagos and lamented his situation.  The embassy quickly procured him a ticket and some spending money and asked him to sign a promisory note.  It is this type of situation that the law was intended to address and not for emergency situation that we are seeing in the Middle East.

The US congress has ordered the US military not to collect on these promisory notes.

Do you know how many Nigerian languages there are? Take a guess before opening this link. Some people will argue that their own language could not be a derivative of another language.

Travel / Re: Funny Experiences On Your First Trip To Naija After Being Abroad For A While by naijarikan(m): 8:32pm On Jun 23, 2006
People on this thread seem to have made it back to naija within three years.  But how about someone like me who went back home for the first time in over ten years?  My shock experience is incomparable.  I'm telling you, there is something physically different between naijas living in nigeria and those in diaspora.  First it was the heat that hit me the moment I stepped into murtala airport (thank God improvements have now been made).  Then there was the female custom officer called 'Iya ibeji' who demanded that I increase the bribe she asked from $5 to $20 because she said I procured my naija passport outside nigeria.  And there was the NEPA dilemma.  I would have to choose between using the generator and sleeping.  You see, the generator was located a few feet from my bedroom window, and when NEPA 'take light' at night, I would have to either turn on the generator to cool myself (and not sleep because of the generator noise) or pray to NEPA to give us power. smiley
Travel / Re: What Did You First Experience In The US? by naijarikan(m): 9:52pm On Jun 07, 2006
Mine was back in the early 90s. Me and my friend were walking hand in hand on a major street in Chicago. We noticed that people were starring at us but did not think much of it. When I got home and asked my uncle why people were starring at us, he burst out laughing explaining to me that people thought we were gay partners. I wished the ground had opened up and swallowed me that moment

Politics / Re: Third Term Agenda <Vote, Comments> by naijarikan(m): 8:50pm On May 05, 2006
I just pray and hope that 9ja does not make a U-turn from democracy to anarchy come 2007.  The so called "3rd term agenda" is a scheme that had been presented to Nigerians thinking that we are mengistus (mumus).  I would have supported a longer term in office for  president as long as it would take effect starting from the newly elected president.  Now that Obj knows people are against it he attached another amendment giving governors longer terms knowing that probably 2/3 of govs would support it.  As the saying goes, 'do your best and leave the rest', Mr President, pack up and go in 2007 so people may thank you for your achievements.

I remember years back during Bill Clintons admin, he proposed an increase in the salary of the president of the United States from $200,000 to $400,000/year.  He, however, stipulated in this proposal that the increase take effect from the next president.  This bill was widely supported by both houses of congress and was passed.   Now George Bush and future presidents will be enjoying this gesture.  Paving the way is a phrase that is missing in our leaders' vocabulary.

Travel / Re: Best Airports You Have Been To? by naijarikan(m): 9:53pm On May 04, 2006
I've been through the following:

Murtala (Lagos)
Aminu (Kano)
Heathrow (London)
Charles De Gaulle (Paris)
Zurich
Schiphol (Amsterdam)
Accra (Ghana)
O'Hare (Chicago)
Midway (Chicago)
Toronto (Canada)
JFK (New York)
La Guardia (New York)
BWI (Baltimore)
Metro (Detroit)
Dallas-Forthworth (Texas)
Newark (New Jersey)

Schiphol would be my best pick with O'Hare a close second. London Heathrow would be my pick for the clumsiest in terms of navigating.
