Poor optimization. Let's start with this - What's the space left in your internal storage, how many heavy apps do you use at once, what Android version are you using?

You can't be using a 5.1 device and wailing about poor optimization, this is 2018.

I know most smartphone users won't ever look the way of devices with 1GB RAM in 2018 but it shouldn't be so. I can't really blame anyone for feeling the way they do about 1GB RAM devices since the regular Android OS performed quite badly on those kind of devices. Nevertheless, I feel we shouldn't judge a book by its cover.

Tecno launched the Spark 2 a couple of days ago while iTel launched the A32F smartphone a few weeks ago and the common feature of both devices is that they run on Android Go. The comments I've seen online from some users about these devices have been quite appalling and rated the devices as low and unusable and I decided to write this post to clarify things a bit. I've tested out a couple of Android Go phones and they're nothing short of amazing. They may be low-budget but they are definitely not unusable.

It's quite important that you understand that a smartphone with 1GB RAM running on Android Go is faster and more efficient than one running on the regular Android O.S

Here's Why -

1. It Provides Better Optimization

This is the major reason Android Go was created - To give low end users the same experience as mid-range and high end users. This optimization is embedded throughout the device, from app management to battery management and even to data usage control.

We all know that improvements to battery life come on every update on Android and coupled with the fact that Android Go starts off with Oreo 8.1. A device I reviewed - The iTel A32F took about 90 minutes to go from 0 to 100 and almost 7 hours of constant use online to go down to 10%. The capacity of the battery wasn't even up to 3000mAh.

The O.S detects apps that are using the battery and terminates them once they have been idle to save you more power.


2. Regular Software Updates

If you're on a low budget and you're not a fan of the "need an upgrade, buy a new one" style of marketing that a couple of brands do on their regular smartphones then Android Go is probably the best choice for you.

There's no bloatware pre-installed in the device. Even the iTel A32F has already received an update in less than 4 weeks of release. There's no custom UI that'll make the OEM waste time trying to redesign the software for its own version of Go.

On Android Go you get a stock android experience and you're certain that you'll receive regular updates. They may even receive the Android P update.

3. Saves Data Efficiently

Google has looked into the fact that the regular Android OS uses up a lot of data so they have optimized the preinstalled apps on Android Go smartphones to be lightweight and take up very little space.The data saver feature works on all the apps on the device. Even the Google Play on the device is optimized to use less data. You don't have to worry about bloatware on the device as everything has been optimized to give you a better experience.

I understand the fact that you may not really fancy these devices if you are a heavy smartphone user, However it's worthy to note that they have ultimately improved the Android user experience on 1GB RAM devices.

Maybe it's groundbreaking on DXOMark but in actual camera comparison that MKBHD did, it wasn't my first, second or third favourite

Alright. I better go look up the video.. The pictures I saw taken on the phone looked pretty good in low light.

Honestly, i don't recommend taking photos at night without flash on your smartphone. Even iPhone X doesn't deliver, maybe i need to try Google pixel 2.

I can only think of one ground breaker - I bet It'll beat the iPhone X - Huawei P20 Pro

Night Photography can suck sometimes because most of the mid range and low budget smartphones that are very common actually struggle to capture images in low light situations so most people just avoid taking pictures at night. I decided to outline the important steps on how to take amazing pictures at night.

1# Try To Keep The Camera Steady

There's no way you'll get that perfect image if you're shaking your hands like a tremor patient. To avoid blurred images just try to keep the camera as steady as possible.
You can even go for a tripod which is the best option to take perfectly sharp shots. If you don’t have a tripod then you can try placing your phone on a wall, or any other solid surface and make use of the timer button on Camera interface.


2# Choose An Area With Good Lighting

Lit up areas like street lights are good for drawing attention in dark environments. Make sure the subject is getting enough light to draw the attention. When you combine the lighting with your LED flash it should look good. However, in some cases it may not work well.


3# Learn To Go Manual

If you want to take better images, you need to learn how to adjust settings manually - exposure , aperture etc.. The default camera app usually comes with a couple of options that'll come in handy if you know how to use it.

#4 Turn On HDR
HDR recognizes different light intensities and then tries to dynamically balance the image. In low light situations, this features competitively helps to take better shots.


#5 ISO
You might have seen this in many camera apps. This can increase the sensitivity of the camera sensor or decreases to capture more or less light. Try to increase the value of the ISO to increase the amount of light and details in low light situations.

#6 Know When To Use Your Flash

This hardware is meant to support the camera in low light conditions, however bad camera flashes can affect photo clarity. Keeping it turned off should produce better results.

#7 Set Your Shutter Speed
The speed at which your camera takes the picture is really important . The more time the camera takes to capture the images the better the details captured and the light intensity will be.

#8 Use A Good Camera App

Different camera apps process images differently and also detect images in varying ways. Try to use the best camera app of your choice for night photography and it could actually help you transform your pictures to amazing ones. I recommend using ToolWiz Photos. It comes with an extensive photo editor and camera . There are tons of features to choose from

#9 Use Additional Gadgets

Add-on lights and small OTG flashes can help to increase the quality of the default camera hardware thus producing impressive results.

#10 Don’t Zoom

Most cameras tend to look a little bit grainy when zoomed in. You need to consider the capacity of your phone’s camera. Digital zoom on some smartphones is usually pretty useless and only ruins the picture. If you have to zoom, you can try to move closer to the subject.Also, if you still need to highlight a particular object in the photo, you can crop it.

#11 Make use of Filters

Your choice of filters can either improve or ruin your pictures so choose wisely.

#12 Image Editing

A good editor will definitely improve your images. You can set the contrast, exposure, blur , effects and more. Like I recommended previously. Tool Wiz Photos will give you a proper image editing experience.

A close look at how the smartphone industry is saturated with different brands, you would wonder how smaller brands cope with the big boys in the industry – Samsung, HTC, Huawei etc.

Slow Android OS Distribution Rate

The end result of the mode of operation of the smaller brands has drastically affected the distribution rate of the Android OS globally. Apple’s iOS powered devices have one common feature – Regular updates. Something that is quickly turning to an illusion on some Android powered smartphones.

You may say that iOS isn’t an open source operating system and it is managed solely by the Cupertino based company that is why it’s easy for Apple to send out regular updates but aren’t the bigger brands in the Android ecosystem sending out updates

Wireless Update Bloatware

There’s no excuse for not sending updates to users. Every single android device has a wireless or software update app but most android users that use these devices may use these phones for more than a year without getting a single security update, software update or full system upgrade. These apps are becoming bloatware. They do nothing on the phone. They just lie lifeless on the device adding no necessary value to the phone.

Top Brands Striking Partnerships with Telecom Companies

Top smartphone companies in the United States, United Kingdom and other top economies understand the importance of regular updates and have gone into partnership with the telecoms companies there. Even some of their devices are sold by these carriers like Verizon, T-Mobile, At&t etc. Sometimes these updates are even tailored and distributed by the carriers each period the updates are sent by the smartphone manufacturers. The smaller brands shy away from these partnerships.



Phone Swap Unavailable

Smaller Brands have one marketing strategy and it works pretty well for them – Need an Update: Buy A New Phone. Unlike the bigger brands that send updates and still allow users swap their phones for the latest models by adding a little amount to their devices and swapping their old phones for a newer model, these smaller brands make sure they take every single penny from the consumers and are still unapologetic about it. Most times professional repair services for these brands are almost nowhere to be found.



The Profit Model

I believe every business usually has an aim of making profit and I am not against it. However, I think these smaller brands ought to borrow a leaf from these bigger brands and act like standard smartphone companies. They can sell phones in bulk to telecommunications companies and the telecom carriers can in turn sell the devices to consumers and promise them a phone swap once there is a new model of the device. To the best of my knowledge no law prohibits them from doing so.



Unreliability of Telecom Services

The carriers in other countries usually have the devices locked to their network only as part of the agreement with the smartphone company. It seems that such services un Nigeria would prove abortive as no Telecom company can be relied in totally therefore nobody would want a device locked to a specific carrier. We are in the era of dual sim devices so we may not necessarily be able to blame or point accusing fingers at these brands now. However, in the future if things change we can blame these companies for being profit driven.

I wasn't really a big fan of phones with non-removable batteries until I got a phone with one (the OBI SF1) way back in 2016. I got the phone as a review unit. I used it for up to six months and I must say that devices with non-removable batteries can scare the hell out of you sometimes.

Now Here Are Some things you should know if you are using a Device With a non-removable battery or you're planning to buy one..

1. What To Do When Your Device Freezes (Starts Hanging)

In a other phones when this happens you can simply remove your battery and put it back, everything will be OK after that. Unfortunately for those of us using phones with non-removable batteries it's like a bad dream.

There are 2 types of Freezing

A. Hard Freeze - This is when your device, Freezes for over 10 minutes without responding.

Solution : Simply soft reboot the phone by holding the volume +, volume down and power button at the same time for about 30 seconds. Your device should reboot and unfreeze.

B. Soft Freeze - This is just a temporarily freeze

Solution Just drop the phone for some minutes it should unfreeze after some minutes. When it unfreezes quickly clear all the apps you've been running and reboot the phone.

2. How To Handle Overheating

Since you can't remove the battery and allow the phone to cool. The best solution is to place your phone on a cold surface (please not inside a freezer or refrigerator). You may place it on a cold sachet of water.
After some minutes your phone should be cool as ice..

3. What To Do When Phone refuses to turn on

This can be really scary but it can be handled. Hold the power button for about a minute or 2 if your phone is still working you it'll come on. If it doesn't well try charging it


4. Never Let Your Phone Fall Into Water

Unlike Phones with removable batteries.. There's no guarantee your device will be OK after falling into water unless you're using the Galaxy S9.. Or any water resistant smartphone.

The reason I quoted you was where you said indirectly s8 display was better than the iPhone x which isn't so. In fact, all iPhones from the 6 have the most accurate colors on any phone until s9 showed up


Sure, s9 has the indistinguishable better screen, but that's only in Photo Mode, which most faithfuls don't use...
