Nobody has said subsidy removal is not a good thing but the timing. More so, Economics and leadership are not thesame! no matter how excellent your idea is, you have to explain it and the benefits in understandable formats to the ordinary citizens and that can be seen in charisma of Obama and his likes; how he touts and campaigns for his ideas for proper understanding b4 implementation but here, we have a pot bellied president who prefers to force down his ideas on ordinary Nigerians rather than explain. that is never leadership, thats called dictatorship. Leadership is never complete without followership. leadership is by consent not by force. you win the hearts of many when you can communicate and convince your people of your vision, that's leadership, the other side of it is dictatorship.

I have never seen a country that citizens always want to be romanced like Nigeria. We always pray for a Jerry Rawlings Style government, yet we protest for mundane reasons. The most informative debate on this fuel subsidy issue.  I was for the fuel subsidy before but now I know they have already divided the money, I am completely against it.

Government can not be trusted.  So the state governments want the money to pay minimum wage, if that is the case let them keep the minimum wage.

Am I correct to say you are all encouraging to build a welfare state? You should be ashamed. Your government is only acting upon the need to prevent your economy from collapsing. Now one would think Nigerians would commend their government for this but not. What a bunch of cry babies!!

What sort of people are you? Wait, you want the government to continue to take care of you?

As big and populous as your country, it is a simple mathematics that your economy can't continue to sustain such a subsidy. It's the real world folks, you have to man up and suck it up. Socialism socialism socialism!!!

Now I would wish the President will not give in to the demands of these thugs. They must be dealt with accordingly.

Unstable Nigerian economy means unstable region and as a Ghanaian, this will directly affect me. More of your people will migrate here which means more responsibilities on our side.

The rest of the civilized world stand with you, Mr President. Don't give in to the thugs.
PoliticsRe: Femi Falana & Funmi Iyanda On Fuel Subsidy Removal - Channels TV by najoke: 2:36pm On Jan 11, 2012
harmeenut:
I dont believe this struggle is about subsidy, it's actually about wastage, corruption and the lack of gut to fight corruption. According to David Tam-West, subsidy itself doesn't exist and if it does, government clearly know those cabals that are getting it. The problem here i that FG lacks the gut to prosecute these cabals because they are the same people that donate billions to their campaign during election.
Additionally, I'm aware the 2011 budget life had been extended till March 31, 2012 meaning subsidy provision for 2011 was meant to take care of subsidy till March, Why removing it when you still have about 3 months left of the current budget?

Nigerians are even ready to accept subsidy removal if at all exists but the problem is how are 100% sure the revenue accrued from same will used for what they promised to used it for. We have not seen benefits of the past deregulation and yet you want me to accept new one. You want me to tighten my belt yet you are ready to lead by example with N1.54milliom naira daily budget for feeding & refreshment at Aso Rock (Haba Jesus & Mohammed dey come to dinner). N45,000 daily on news paper? Hahahaha

So the stance is not just on subsidy removal but to fight corruption. and every other things will fall in place but Jonathan can fight corruption because his hands are covered in blood wit duboius characters he appointed into his cabinet some of whom has oil blocs and shares/interest in oil & gas biz

Falana has been spot on with all his arguements. The pertinent question he asked was: So if the price of crude increases in the Int'l market to $200/barrel, what happens?

In effect, we'll have to pay over N200/litre for PMS? Or will the govt not have to subsidie again even after 'deregulating' the downstream sector?  So GEJ & his cohorts should make up their mind either to continue fixing prices or allow market forces do that. . .

If cameroon increases the price of PMS to N300 a litre, we also have to increase ours again to avoid smuggling?

Is that the solution to smuggling?

I have been visiting Ghana for a few years now and as a matter of fact I have been in Ghana since November 2011 till date.
As per why no fuss with the increment, the most fundamental reason is TRUST. The government has gained trust from the governed because you can see where the little money they have is going.

The expenditure of the presidency in Ghana is less than what Nigeria spend on LGA chairman at least I saw the president come to open a new bank in February 2010. No bloated entourage and security. No one blocked the main road few meters from where he was making his speech at the Independence Avenue.
The problem of Nigeria is twisted values, here in Ghana the poor is respected as much as the rich so who cares if you are a billionaire.

End of story
Nigerians know its nice to remove the subsidy but cannot trust the government to use the money for any meaningful change and you couldn't blame them judging from the past and even present.

Lets make ill-gotten wealth unattractive as a people and everything will fall in place. Nigerians are tough people but not silly!
