Between 1967 to 1996, far north political class used Yakubu Gowon, Muritalla Mohammed, Ibrahim Babangida and Sani Abacha, and created 20 states in one northern region. They created only 17 states in the two southern regions..


But in no other country formed by diverse regions was land mass OR population used as yardstick to create states and LGAs, as used in Nigeria.


That action of state creation and political constituencies, as well as the clause requiring presidential candidates to win 25% of votes in 24 states to win, effectively made Nigeria a property of far northern Nigeria's political class.

Chris Ezike, on Monday, assumed duty as the new Commissioner of Police (CP) in Abia.

Ezike, who was in charge of the Department of Research and Planning, Community Policing, Force Headquarters, Abuja, took over from Anthony Ogbizi, NAN reports

Speaking at the formal handover, at the CP’s office, Ezike said that he would partner with the communities in setting agenda and proffering solution to security challenges in Abia for better result.

He said that as a community-based organisation, the command under his watch would carry the communities along in the discharge of its duty to the people.

He also said that the command would apply the “best practice principle” that would not compromise the quality of the police force but add value to the lives of the citizenry.

“I owe it a duty to God to discharge my duty to the best of my ability,” he said.

He promised to hold strategic meetings with the Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Heads of Units to properly acquaint himself with relevant information on the crime situation in Abia.

He said that he would specifically require information on crime statistics for the last three months, logistics and manpower holdings at the various divisions and area commands.

Ezike lauded his predecessor for his proven dedication and commitment in strengthening security for lives and property in the state.

He also said the government had invested heavily in social protection, describing it as the largest in the country’s history and disclosed that the government had spent over N2.7tn on capital expenditure in the last three years, pointing out that it is the highest amount ever spent on capital in the history of Nigeria.
