Less than 48 hours after the State Security Service (SSS)  smashed a kidnap syndicate in Benin, a United States of America based Nigerian medical doctor,  Kenneth Oyarebu, has been abducted.
The kidnap  occurred weekend, between Iyirekhu and Ughuedu, at South-Ibie, in Estasko-west Local Government Area of Edo State.Oyarebu's kidnap is coming on the heels of the kidnap of Ekpoma branch chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Nath Inegbedidon, along with his three children, who were later rescued by the SSS, while acting on a tip-off.
Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, ASPPeter Ogboi, said he was yet to be briefed on the matter by the Police Area Commander, Auchi.
The abductors are yet to contact Oyarebu's relations for ransom demand.
Similarly, an attempt by a vulcanizer in Auchi to allegedly kidnap his apprentice was foiled by the apprentice who had to jump out of the vehicle when he noticed that he was being taken to an unknown destination.

Multi-million fraud: French MD of ANAMMCO to face the law –BPE DG
From MODESTUS CHUKWULAKA, Abuja

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other relevant agencies are probing allegations of corrupt practices levelled against Mr. Jacques Gelin, the expatriate managing director of the Enugu-based auto company, ANAMMCO, by the staff of the company.

Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), Dr. Christopher Anyanwu, stated this on Monday when senior staff of ANAMMCO numbering over 200 stormed the bureau’s headquarters in Abuja, demanding the removal and prosecution of Gelin for sundry abuses.

They claimed that Mr. Gelin’s activities was gradually crippling ANAMMCO operations, which they said had been programmed to close shop next January 1.

The aggrieved workers had arrived the BPE premises with assorted placards and a mock coffin, in which they conspicuously wrote the name of the black-listed managing director.

Anyanwu told the workers after receiving and listening to their presentations that government had been inundated with allegations bothering on fraudulent activities of Gelin, who he said was currently being investigated by the anti-graft agencies.

He said: “This is not the first time we are hearing about the alleged fraud against Mr. Gelin. The anti-fraud unit of the Nigeria Police Force is probing him, but he was granted bail based on the intervention of the French Embassy. We have also attended series of meetings in Germany where the issues were raised.

“I must tell you that we are impressed by the way you decided to go about this protest peacefully. We are also happy that you have documentary evidence of the allegations you have made. He will face the music. I don’t think I can be bribed. Justice must be done in this matter though it seem it is taking a little longer time, but the course of justice could appear to be slow but surely will grind to its end.

“I must tell you that we are not trying to pass judgement from our side. That is what the law says, but we will take the appropriate steps on the petitions you had written. He must be made to defend himself of all these allegations, which to my mind are weighty enough. We can assure you that the company will not die. Be rest assured that undiluted justice will be done,” Dr. Anyanwu stressed.

Earlier, the ANAMMCO workers had barricaded the entrance gate of the BPE with mock coffin and assorted placards, some of which read: ‘Lawmakers, where are you? Gelin –Father of all fraud; as far as Nigeria is concerned, I can bribe my way, says Gelin; Nigeria Police Can Not Arrest Me, Says Gelin; We Need German MD, Gelin Must Be Probed’, among others.

Making their grievances known to the BPE management, Chairman of the Senior Staff Association of the ANAMMCO workers, Mr. Frank Nwagbara and Secretary, Mr. Mike Agu, urged the bureau to immediately probe the illegal fleecing of funds from ANAMMCO to a private company incorporated with ANAMMCO funds through which most of the fraudulent practices were perpetrated.

The workers, who provided detailed instances of large scale fraud involving huge sums of money against Mr. Gelin and few of the top management of ANAMMCO, alleged that between 2007 and now, the company had lost over N2 billion.

Providing breakdown of the alleged fraud, the workers claimed that Gelin illegally approved payment of N1.5 billion overdraft to some leading banks (names withheld) in the country for services not rendered to ANAMMCO.

They also claimed that the managing director, along with a retired company secretary, who was later recalled to serve in the same position under spurious contract arrangement, also approved that N45.7 million be withdrawn for settlement of some unnamed staff of the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS).

Similarly, the workers alleged that of the 120 per cent bonus approved for them for their superlative performance last year, Gelin and his collaborators withheld 20 per cent of the money running into several millions of naira, which they claimed was for the settlement of some tax officials.

After concluding from the BPE, the workers said they would storm EFCC, ICPC, Force Headquarters, National Assembly and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to ventilate their position.

Upgrade: Akanu Ibiam Airport to be shut soon
From Christopher Iziguzo in Enugu, 11.12.2009
Thursday, November 12, 2009

Following the award of a N4.2 billion contract for the upgrade of the Akanu Ibiam airport, Enugu to an international status by the Federal Government, arrangements are currently underway to temporary close the airport in the next few weeks in order for the work to commence.

Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who made the announcement while speaking with newsmen shortly after playing host to the leadership of the Ohaneze Ndigbo, Aninri local government chapter, stated that the contract which is also expected to be executed within weeks would ultimately uplift the status of the airport.

He assured that adequate plans had been made to allocate more aircraft to the Sam Mbakwe Airport , Owerri, while arrangements for helicopter services had been made to cushion the effect of the airport closure.

“In the next couple of weeks, the Akanu Ibiam Airport will be upgraded to an International Airport . The upgrading will gulp about N4.2 billion. I’m not sure of the exact amount but it will be within N4 or N4.2 billion. More flights will be taken to Owerri to take care of the envisaged traffic congestion,” he said.

Ekweremadu, who used the forum to react to the Senate retreat which is expected to kick off in Enugu today, noted that it had become the policy of the Senators to always take out time to retool with the sole aim of building their capacity as to be able to meet up with the challenges of lawmaking in the country.

He also disclosed that the giant strides of Governor Sullivan Chime within a short period of time informed his resolve to influence his fellow Senators to grant Enugu state the chance to host the retreat, noting that other zones, including the South-south and the North West had hosted the retreat in the past two years.

The lawmaker further disclosed that the retreat would also afford the Senators the opportunity of appreciating the challenges facing the south east zone, since the Senators would be divided in groups to tour all the states in the zone.

He expressed dismay over the environmental challenges facing the area, especially the issue of coastal and gully erosions, stating that within the period of the retreat, the lawmakers would have a first-hand knowledge of the situation, adding that if nothing urgent was done to address the development, the zone might be highly vulnerable to higher environmental degradation.

While expressing optimism that the Senate would give due attention to the disaster after its visit to the areas involved by approving more budgetary allocations to the zone to combat the scourge, Ekweremadu said: “we have agreed to visit erosion sites in the South East zone.

We have divided ourselves into groups to carry out the assignment and I’m hopeful that that the disaster will be given due attention.”

PoliticsEnemies Of The People Move To Secure Bode George's Release by Nchara(op): 3:16am On Nov 08, 2009
Bode: Riot imminent in Kirikiri prison

…as Bode George refuses food, uniforms

By NGOZI EMEDOLIBE

NIGERIA may witness a repeat of what happened in the 1980s, when uproar burst in the nation's prisons over attempts to appease some politicians considered as “high-profile prisoners.” National Daily gathered that at the moment an uneasy calm seems to be pervading the Kirikiri Prison, where politician Bode George is spending his second week, since he was jailed by Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, who also denied him bail, following the prosecuting counsel's plea that he needed time to file a motion against the application.

The tension is coming on the heels of chances that Bode George (who was convicted for various fraudulent activities he allegedly committed as the chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority) would be given the royal treatment at the detriment of several other inmates.

A source at the prison told National Daily that a few days ago palpable tension overwhelmed the entire prison premises when Bode George refused to wear prison uniforms, on account of his position in the society. The source said that other inmates expressed their emotions and were ready to make the jail house uninhabitable, should the prison officials try to mete out any form of preferential treatment to the People's Democratic Party chieftain.
“Other prisoners are still watching to see what will transpire at the end of the day. Do not forget that they are already sad over the poor state of things in the prison. They are ready to make the place uncomfortable for every one if the officials try to give any form of preferential treatment to Bode George.”

According to the source, George who was handed a set of uniforms after his bail application met a brick wall has refused to wear them.

“He has refused to wear the uniforms. He has not even tried them on. Perhaps he is counting on his clout, but the prison is a different ball game.: it is not NPA, “the source said.

Aside refusing to don his prison uniforms, George is also hesitant about eating prison food, which the source said is mostly beans and garri. On many occasions, he is said to have tarried without food, except on few occasions when his last wife, has brought food for him in the prison.

National Daily gathered that what has made the situation very cringing is the fact that the several attempts being made by George's colleagues to get him out of the hook has been proving abortive. At the height of the imprisonment, sources disclosed to the paper that some prominent elders from the South West geo-political zone had paid the President, Umaru Yar'Adua a visit, and feelers are unanimous that it may not be unconnected with the possibility of letting the PDP chieftain have a soft-landing in the raging matter. Some of them were said to have argued in Aso Rock that keeping George in prison for two years may as well affect the prospects of the PDP in the upcoming general elections in 2011.

“They are arguing that with Bode George in prison, it will spell doom for the party in view of the threat by AC in the south west zone in 2011. The elders are also positing that the move may cost President Yar'Adua the votes of the southwest zone in the next elections. They also reminded the President how hard Bode George worked in ensuring his political victory in 2007, bearing in mind that he was the Director General of the Yar'Adua/Jonathan Campaign Organization then. Whether the President was swayed by the visit and suggestions would be determined by events that will unfold in the coming days,” the source hinted.
The PDP chieftain's road to jail has been spectacular so far. It started on October 29, 2008, and had an official of the EFCC, Mr. Muslim Hassan, as the prosecution counsel who later gave way for Mr. Festus Keyamo who conducted and concluded the trial.

The prosecution presented 10 witnesses to prove the allegations against the defendants, while George represented the defendants. Principally, the prosecution, through its witness, tried to establish that the defendants committed the alleged offences of inflation, splitting of contracts and disobedience to constituted authority. The prosecution closed its case on May 25, 2009, while the defendants opened theirs on same day and ended on June 24, 2009. In its written addresses filed at the Registry of the state High Court, the prosecution, however, argued that the defendants had no excuse permitted by law to disobey the order, and if they (defendants) plead any excuse, the burden of proof must rest on them.

According to the prosecution, the lack of knowledge of the 2001 directive of the Federal Government as mentioned in the ninth meeting of the Board, the complex nature of ports activities as claimed by the defendants and the improper procedure by which they were notified could not by any means avail them. Relying on Section 22 on issue of "ignorance of law," it stated "it does not afford any excuse for any act or omission which would otherwise constitute an offence, unless knowledge of the law by the offender is expressly declared to be an element of the offence."

Led in evidence by the EFCC counsel, one of the major prosecution witnesses, Mustapha Bukar, a director in the Ministry of Transportation, who chaired the seven-man administrative panel instituted by the Federal Government to probe the activities of the NPA, said his "panel discovered that about 29,526 contracts were awarded by the management of the NPA between year 2001 and 2003."

In his evidence, the witness said that some of the contracts were split and inflated before they were awarded to different contractors by the NPA management. Bukar, an engineer, specifically, told the court that the board while awarding contracts did not abide by a certain circular from the Federal Government, which spelt out the limitation of the Board in doing so.

The witness said the price intelligence units system and due process were ignored by the management in the award of contracts in the years under review. However, under cross-examinations by the defence lawyers led by Chief Tunji Ayanlaja (SAN), Bukar admitted that one of the committee members, Greg Ogbueifon, had earlier written a petition against the NPA Board over some issues. He also agreed that it was morally wrong for the same Ogbueifon to be a member of the committee investigating the management of the NPA. Ayanlaja also noted that one of the Board members, Alhaji Kurawa, was not charged before the court. He submitted that the trial was an orchestrated one to nail the defendants.

As Bode George prays to be given preferential treatment in prison, Nigerians are eagerly awaiting to see how the appeal slated for November 9 will turn out, even as Prison authorities continue to deny moves to treat him like a king.

53.37% pay rise for varsity workers

The Federal government yesterday approved 53.37 per cent salary increase for the three non-teaching unions in the nation’s public universities.

The unions are the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff of Universities (NASU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT).

Following this development SSANU, NASU and NAAT immediately called off the four months old industrial action indefinitely and directed all their members to resume work without delay.

The National President of SSANU, Mr. Promise Adewusi, his NAAT’s counterpart, Alhaji Abdullatif Jokomba and the General Secretary of NASU, Mr. Peter Adeyemi, gave the directive suspending the strike after they separately signed the agreement with the Federal Government’s team.

The Chairman of the negotiating team, Mr. Gamaliel Onosode, signed on behalf of the Federal Government, while the Chairman of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors, Dr. Wale Babalakin, signed on behalf of the university managements.

Although details of the agreement were sketchy as at press time, a highly placed source told our correspondent that the unions got 53.37 per cent salary increase from the Federal Government.

The source said: "The salary increase is 53.37 per cent on CONTISS (Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Structure) of January 1, 2007."

The National Vice-President (North) of SSANU, Mr. Timothy Ahile, told reporters after the signing that the contentious issue of 65 years retirement age had been approved as part of the agreement, while the agreement would be reviewed in 2012.

Before the signing of the agreements, which took place at the National Universities Commission (NUC) headquarters, Onosode, called on each union president to confirm his acceptance or otherwise of the agreement.

Onosode said: "I want to confirm if this document which is now available for execution represents and faithfully captures the agreement reached. We even went so far as to include in the document issues that were raised but on which.

"I want to align myself completely with the commitment which has been expressed by the three presidents of the three unions that this agreement we hope is pointing us in a direction that will help us as a people to have the glory of our university system restored."

Adewusi in his reply said: "We are happy with this document being a product of collective bargaining."

Jokpmba said: "On behalf of my members, I want to say that this document that has come of age as a result of collective bargaining is a true situation and reflection of what happened and we accept it."

Adeyemi, who represented the president of NASU said: "The document before us represents in totality the summary of what has happened."

The Minister of Education, Dr. Sam Egwu said the over four month’s old strike would be the last in the annals of Nigerian universities, adding that the government would urgently set up an implementation committee. He said: "I will immediately constitute the implementation panel so that the details of the agreement will be implemented to the letter. After that, we are going to convey a National Summit on Education where all stakeholders will be gathered to fashion out a better way to ensure good education system.

"In Nigeria, we should not be comparing our universities with the universities in Africa, but we should be comparing them with universities in the world.

"With the signing of this agreement, I am convinced that we shall no longer have strike in the university system. I thank God first for seeing us through that difficult period of negotiations and when all the unions in our universities went on strike.

"I am excited that we have eventually come to the successful end of this negotiation which started in 2001 and re-negotiated in 2006. It has not been easy all this while. I thank all those who took part in the negotiation, especially the Chairman, Deacon Onosode who has the Wisdom of Solomon and the patience of Job."

Police smash robbery gang …Arrest indicted herbalist
By CHRISTOPHER OJI & TUNDE RAHEEM

Thursday, November 5, 2009

Police in Ondo have smashed a seven-man robbery gang, which was believed to have been terrorizing residents of the state.

Suspects

advertisement

Members of the gang, which comprised a renowned witchdoctor in Akure, are being quizzed at the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), section in Akure, the state capital.

The witchdoctor, Ajayi Komolafe, told Daily Sun that someone brought some members of the gang to him for his prayers. He said: “I am a witchdoctor, known all over Ondo State. One of my clients, Okpe, brought some people to me. The young men came for prayers for success in their business endeavours.”

He said when he consulted his oracle, the type of business the young men were engaged in - armed robbery were revealed to him.

According to him, he prayed and gave them some ‘success charms’. He said he continued to pray for members of the gang but they failed to show appreciation.

For instance, members of the gang once shared their loot in his shrine and gave little amount of money. “I watched them, as they shared the large sum of money. They only gave me a paltry sum of N5, 000.”

He said one day, he decided to challenge the gang for giving him little amount of money, considering the fact that he was responsible for their successes during robberies.

“Immediately I challenged them, Okpe told me that I was a healthy man, without deformity, that If I needed money, I should join them during next operation.”

He said after Okpe’s challenge, he decided to join the gang in the next operation. He said: “I actually went with them and we were successful and I got N15, 000. After the second operation, I got N25, 000. I made more than N60, 000, from the fifth operation.”

On how he was arrested, Babalawo (herbalist), as he was fondly called, said it was one of the members, who joined another gang to rob that implicated him.

“The boy did not come for prayers and ‘fortification’ before he went for the robbery operation. Besides, he failed to inquire from the gods whether his star was compatible with his new gang,” he said.

Another suspect, Olayinka Adebayo (aka Last born), believed by the police to be the leader of the gang, said contrary to the belief, the gang was led by one Frayo (at large).

He was angry with Babalawo, describing him as a fake witchdoctor. “He assured us that police would never arrest us, yet, they arrested us, telling us where and how we operated, ” he said.

He said members of the gang respected Babalawo, adding that he disappointed them.

He revealed that Frayo and the assistant leader of the gang, ECOMOG, were based in Lagos. “They were operating in Lagos, before police chased them away. They started operating on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. I met them in a party and informed them that my friend, Jelly, and I were also operating in Kwara State, before we were chased away last year.”

He said when he moved to Akure, he invited Frayo and ECOMOG. “We were succeeding until three months ago, when police changed their strategies. We became afraid and Okpe advised that we should consult a juju priest.”

He said after receiving assurances from babalawo that they were not going to be arrested, they decided to try their luck in Akure. “So, we robbed the Chief Security Officer (CSO), to the state government. We snatched his car and service pistol. That was our greatest undoing, as police arrested us.”

The Police Commissioner, Mr. Donald Iroham, who paraded the suspects in Akure recently, warned that Ondo State was now too hot for criminals, especially, armed robbers.

He said robbing in Ondo State is like embarking on a suicide mission, as there is no hiding place for armed robbers. “I would advise them to repent or quit the state,” Iroham said.

The teacher (black american) said he lived in Nigeria for 15 years from the 80's to early 90's, he lamented "How can a yorubas be the cause of Nigerias woes when there has only be 1 Yoruba presidency OBJ". He further gave accounts where prominent yoruba leaders were assassinated when ever they opposed military regimes.  He also added how can any ethnic group cause the problem in Nigeria when everyone is governing their state of origin(it doesnt get any more equal then that). He said imagine if yorubas werent in Nigeria, who would be an actual formidable opposition? because so far many if not all of the people assassinated in Nigeria were of Yoruba ethnicity not to mention the Soyinkas and co, who dont only defend their tribe but the interest of all Nigerians.

While everyone was being quiet in Nigeria( if they didnt run away) its no doubt the leaders of yoruba ethnicity have been at the forefront of opposition in terms of Nigerias interest.

anyway how you see it, if someone is mentions Nigeria in a negative way its a yoruba like Obj(the SAME person flogged over and over again) but if someone talks about Nigeria in a positive way its Fela,Soyinka,Fashola and co,
I cant think of any other tribe who has defended the interest or recognized the work of others besides their own.

No doubt others may leave Nigeria or Africa and make a name for themselves but when the words Africa or Nigeria comes to mind Soyinkas and Felas ARE NEVER LEFT OUT.
I dont have time to blame poblems in the West on people from the North, East or South South, it just doesnt make sense. smh

In truth, the likes of both of you will be begging for academic marks from me, were I to be in Nigeria. This is the same Sagamite who created a thread insulting journalists? You must be a horror.

Doubting Thomases,

Although this thread is not about me, let me however confirm that yes, I am indeed a Faculty of a university in the US (name witheld). I am tempted to expose who I am in real life but I will refrain from doing so in this forum. Thusly, please do not ask for the name of my institution, or my real names; I will not give those out for strategic reasons. I guess it is always wise to remain anonymous so one can voice their opinion the way they deem fit without recourse to phoney diplomacy. Holding a PhD (Magna Cum Laude) in Biological Engineering is not akara.

YommyUK,

Please let's get this straight. Are you by any means confirming that you are sure that only Ondo and Ekiti people live in Igboland? I ask this because I Know very many Yoruba people at the University of Agriculture Umudike, Abia State who are from Osun State. This is just one example.

Bode George deserves honour, says PDP
National News Oct 27, 2009 By Dapo Akinrefon
REACTIONS have continued to trail the sentence of former Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George.

George and five other members of his board were sentenced to 28 years jail without an option of fine by an Ikeja High Court on Monday.

The Lagos State Chairman of PDP, Mr. Setonji Koshoedo, described the ruling as “sad and shocking.”

Koshoedo, in a statement said: “It is a blow not only to Lagos PDP but to the South-West and the nation as a whole. He deserves honour for his contribution to Nigeria. Lagos PDP will suspend all activities till further notice.

“Morale of the members,” he said, “has been dampened. A lot of work will have to be done to rejuvenate the party. We will not allow this to affect our focus. Our goal to succeed come 2011 is unshakeable,” he added.

However, the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), has lauded Justice Olubunmi Oyewole for what it described as a “diligent judgment.”

According to its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, “It is on the matter of ‘kid gloves’ that many Nigerians have expressed disappointment with the judgment. They are of the view that 30 months in jail is too light for the kind of crimes Bode George and colleagues committed.”

My dear, do not kill yourself over false claims. They remain what they are: false claims. The JAMB records speak for themselves. Moreover, Nigerians abroad know who and who are schooling abroad. For example, I am a faculty member and I know where most Nigerians in my own university come from.
