Is he reachable ?... contact him and see what the issue and also contact TOEFL and see what the issue is Yes i seen a comment here where someone used a stolen credit card and registered and this happened. I dont know if that what happened here .... but if that is. I suggest you pay it and move on . If you dont pay possibly nothing will happen either but i would just pay. Did you pay him half of the fees to his bank account and then he made the full payment?. At the end of the day NL is faceless so you always have to be careful here. If someone is doing a giveaway then let them give you the money and you pay yourself. anything outside that , you have to be careful [/quote I called ETS now and I was told that the payment was later declined. The lady told me they usually witness a lot of scam cases from Nigeria. It is just so sad and disheartening that these people giving us bad names are less than 1% of the population. People won't really understand the implication of their action until they move out of Nigeria and experience how we are perceived as a people. All the Fraudsters here on Nairaland should desist from these sharp practices. How do I even pay this $180 considering I am just a poor student living from hand to mouth. I dont even work, no TA. My survival here in the US is a clear testimony that God still interfere in affairs of man; it has been good people assistance since I got here. It is just a miracle that a nobody like me from the ghetto of Lagos Ajegunle is enrolled and studying in the US for a postgraduate degree. I can only hope this doesnt affect me in anyway. $180 is a lot for someone that doesn't work and I really wanted to report this score but I was told I will have to make the full payment. I am planning to work during this summer as an intern, I already got an offer but I do not have the means to make the payment. @Enuelsmith, please do the needful if you are reading this. I am doing this because you never replied the mail I sent you. |
LagosismyHome:I paid him half of the money. I do not have his contact anymore but I sent him message here on Nairaland. |

@enuelsmith on this forum registered TOEFL for me last year and I just realized that on my account that I have $180 outstanding. I am currently in the US studying. I hope this will not affect me in anyway. I was here last year thanking him for the kind gesture. I was here singing his praise for giving me a discount of 50%. I am confused and sad at the moment. I really want to know what happened because up till when I left Nigeria there wasn't any issue. Is it possible for someone to cancel payment after registering and siting for the exam. I am really worried about what has happened. I dont want any fraud allegations on me in the US. Cc Justwise, Lagosismyhome |
My travel and POE experience I left Abuja for US on at 22:15 saturday 11th August. Since school resumes 13th August I had to leave a week after getting approved. We had a 12 hour layover in Frankfurt before jetting off to JFK New York. Aside the time spent on the queue, I did not spend up to 2 minutes with the border control officer. Only my i20 was requested and only question asked was that I was going for studies which I answered in the affirmative. My next flight to Cleveland was from LaGuardia airport. I stood outside JFK enjoying free wifi and communicating with family back home. I had prior information that New York taxis were really expensive and so I didn't try catching one. Someone had told me to use the metro. So as I stood by the corner chatting with peeps and enjoying the scenario of NYC at night, a man dressed like a security personnel with a walkie talkie walked up to me and asked me if I was waiting for someone, where I was going and how I planned to get there. I told him my plans of using the metro and he said I should follow him and he would direct me to the spot where I would catch the metro and that the next metro was the last for the night and I had to act fast so that I can get on it else I would miss my flight. So he crossed the road and I followed him, and he pointed to a spot and said that's where they wait for metro. I stood there for a while and began to feel skeptical. The spot looked isolated and more of a car park than a metro pick up spot. Within a few minutes a luxury car pulled up and the driver shouted "Metro for LaGuardia airport". My spirit no carry am at all. I told him no that I'll just wait for my friend. He tried persuading me and I suddenly recognised him as the guy that directed me to that spot in the first place. He had hurriedly changed to a Polo Shirt. I left him, began going back to JFK, i then saw some guys at a corner laughing. I then realised that i almost got scammed. I followed some Chinese people and took an elevator up to an air-train station where I took a free train to Jamaica station. From there I paid $8.50 for a metro card that I used to get to Roosevelt Avenue sub way station, from there I used the same metro card to get on a bus to LaGuardia airport. Am finally at Cleveland and I called a friend IN Oaklahoma and he told me how he fell for that same scam in January and how the driver told him he had a faulty meter and charged $400 to that same LaGuardia airport which he later begged and paid $110. The hustle is real everywhere. Shine your eyes. I hope someone learns from my experience and don't fall for this bunch of scammers[/quote That same guy told me the air train closes by 12:00am. He charged me 190$ after which I insisted I do not have such an amount. He actually dropped me at terminal 8. Although he later agreed $10 but after getting off the SUV, I noticed I could not find my $100 bill. Perhaps I mistakenly dropped it in his ride when trying to pay him. The scene was really scary for me. They were 2 guyz. People beware of these guyz in JFK new york. |
Arrived JFK friday 1:06am US time, connecting flight to houston via NC. POE experience, no hastle at all. POE isn't a big deal, he only asked if I am carrying meat and I said no, any food? I said Garri. Still on my way to by bus to my final destination. I owe all to this thread. Thanks to all the gurus. Infact I met a Nigerian woman that offered me a ride to the bus station. She knew I was in need and sensed I was a Nigerian. Lest I forget criminals and dubious people everywhere even in America. I lost $100 to them, e pain me no be small. |
LagosismyHome:I just git this from the International student office ISO: You should not need a late arrival letter to enter the United States since you are arriving between the program start date and the start of classes (both dates are listed on your I-20). Since you will be missing the International Student Orientation Program tomorrow, you will need to report to our office at 101 Hatcher Hall with your documents – passport, visa, I-20, I-901 SEVIS fee receipt and I-94 printout (www.cbp.gov/I94) – after you arrive on campus so that we can register you in the SEVIS Immigration database. Failure to be registered in SEVIS will put you out of lawful student status (considered deportable by U.S. Immigration). You will also need to complete some paperwork with our office, and you will receive instructions on how to complete your course registration (this will include information on the Michigan English Placement test, for which you will have to pay a late fee if you are required to take the test). You can find basic information about course registration on our |
LagosismyHome:8th of August as start date and 20th as start of class. I believe unforseen circumstances like delay in visa and flight schedule make skuls to adjust start of class. What do ido now? |
LagosismyHome:But i could remember last year when i was denied twice. I noticed that the only adjustment made was in the start of class just to accommodate all delays When my school sent me a second I-20 in August for my second interview. The program start was never changed. |
iceberge:Infact i got different conflicting answers. Wikipedia says Nigerians and some other 16nations will mostly third world countries. I had to put a call to the customer care line of Ireland embassy, the lady that picked it said i won't be needing a needing a transit visa after confirming from another source at their embassy in Abuja. I asked her if she was 100% sure and she told me to send a mail to the embassy myself. I did and the white woman said i will be needing it because ET airlines are strict about this requirement at Adis Ababa during Check in. She even call me offering to assist if I can send all documents to Abuja. That led me to cancel my initial flight scheduled for 6th of August. Below is the email correspondence To whom it may concern: I am travelling to the United States of America for my doctorate degree via Ethiopia Airline. Hope do not need an Ireland Visa since I will be on transit(45 minutes Service stop) via Dublin Ireland? Dear Sir/Madam If you are a Nigerian citizen you will be required to obtain a transit visa for that travel plan. Please see details below relating to the Visa Application process: http://www.inis.gov.ie/en/INIS/Pages/Irish%20Visa%20Information Applications are initially made online: https://www.visas.inis.gov.ie/avats/OnlineHome.aspx Once the application is made online, you may forward the application form, passport, and supporting documents to: Visa Office Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service Department of Justice and Equality 13-14 Burgh Quay Dublin 2 E-mail: visamail@justice.ie Once the online application is completed you will be instructed where to forward your application. This office only accepts applications from persons resident in Nigeria, Ghana and Senegal. Best Regards, Visa Office Embassy of Ireland Abuja I just called a customer care line here in Lagos and I was told there won't be a need for a transit visa. I do not know which of these statements to take as concrete. I have already booked this flight already and do not want to cancel it. The flight itinerary is Lagos to Adis Ababa Ethiopia, Ethiopia to Dublin (45 minutes Service stop not a long layover at all). What do I do now since visa processing takes time and the flight is already schedule for 6th August. If you insist I get a Visa before travelling, how long does typically take? Note I have a valid US student visa issued recently July 24 for the purpose of my journey for the Fall semestre starting August 20th. Please kindly assist. I have tried calling Abuja embassy all to no avail. Can you provide me with a valid phone number to clarify all my doubt? Regards, Dear Sir/Madam I can confirm definitively that you will require a transit visa. I have checked with my colleagues in Dublin Airport who have confirmed that this is the situation. The other information you received from a customer care line in Lagos is incorrect. My colleague in Dublin Airport has also advised that if you do not obtain a visa in advance that you run the risk of not being allowed to board in Addis Ababa as Ethiopian Emigration Officers are very strict on this issue. Do you have a number I can contact you on to discuss ? Visa Office ABUJA |
Nahum777:It is not there |
Nahum777:Are you sure about this? My start of class is 20th August while international students and grad skul orientation are 9th and 15th respectively. My arrival is sheduled after internatnal students orientation but before grad skul orienta and start of class. I hope there would be no problem? |

Young man, you can't come here and be rude for being corrected. If you continue this way people will ignore your post. Let's all be polite no matter how bitter the truth is. |
oraclemania:This undergraduate supervisor story is getting too much. I won't be surprised if people start getting denied on that basis. |
