Libya has banned the use of Hijab why not Nigeria. Moreover its not forever just for 21days |
The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has rejected in very strong terms the purported ban on Hijab in the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, orientation camps. The Director-General of the NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Johnson Olawumi, on Tuesday announced a ban on the use of “long hijab” by female corps members, citing security concerns. But MURIC, in a statement by its director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, said the ban is unacceptable to Muslims and accused the NYSC DG of Islamophobia. “The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) rejects the purported ban. It is reckless, baseless and preposterous. No public officer of the Federal Republic of Nigeria should speak in such manner. “The pronouncement smacks of power drunkenness. It is a hate statement. The Director General needs to purge himself of Islamophobia. “On what ground is he banning the use of hijab? Security reason is not enough because we have examples of armed robbers using police uniforms to rob. “Has anyone thought of banning police uniform? About forty armed robbers dressed in army uniform attacked six banks in Agbara, Ogun State last week. They killed a policeman and a pregnant woman. Should we ban army uniform because of that? “Brigadier General Johnson and his ilk are hiding under the security challenge facing Nigeria to implement a hidden agenda, namely, to stigmatise Muslims and to embarrass our daughters and wives who wear hijab. “Is General Johnson aware that female Muslims in the British police use hijab on top of their uniform? Can he tell us how the hijab disturbs a corper’s uniform? “Does the DG know that hijab is an integral, nay, the most vital part of a female Muslim’s dress? Does he know that female Muslim corpers feel as if they are unclad when disallowed from using the hijab? Is he aware of the psychological trauma such female Muslim corpers go through? “How can we spend a lifetime training our daughters to dress decently and you dehumanize them in your camp within 24 hours? How dare you? “We affirm that we will use every constitutional means to stop this religious apartheid against Muslims in the name of discipline and regimentation. “Why must Muslims face persecution everywhere in Nigeria? Why can’t the Nigerian system accommodate and integrate the Islamic culture? Why can’t Nigerian officials allow Islamic landmarks to stand pari passu with British colonial and Christian culture? “Is Nigeria truly independent or is it a banana republic created to serve only the interest of the British imperial masters? Must Muslims be forced to accept British Christian mode of dressing? “We must ask who designed Nigeria’s school uniform? Who designed the army and police uniforms? Was it not the British? What is the religion of the British? Is every Nigerian in the same faith? So why can’t we allow the Muslims to retain their identity? Why can’t the Muslims enjoy religious freedom in this country? “Why must Muslims be forced to dress like Christians? Why must Muslims be denied the dividends of democracy? Any policy that fails to carry us along is exclusive. Nigeria is for all of us. We reject an NYSC that promulgates anti-Muslim decrees. “We remind the DG that he cannot turn Muslims in NYSC camps into slaves. This is not military rule. NYSC officials, including the DG will be acting ultra vires if they take actions which violate the laws of the land. “Section 38 (i) & (ii) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees religious freedom. We seek the enforcement of this right. “Yet the hypocrisy of the system has been exposed. Can the NYSC Director General explain why the NYSC allows female Muslim corpers in places like Kano and Sokoto to use the hijab while their counterparts in the South are harassed and intimidated? “Why this double standard? Is the ban only meant for the South? Or is it further proof of the mythological ‘Northern-Muslim and Southern-Christian dichotomy’? It had better not be. “We hope it will not get to a point when Nigerian Muslims will decide to opt out of the NYSC service year. Yes, we may have no other option than to ask our daughters to ignore an institution which targets them for ridicule, torment and persecution. “MURIC charges the NYSC to revisit its rules. Any aspect of those rules which fails to respect the faith of Christians, Muslims or traditionalists should be expunged. Such rules are draconian and counter-productive. They only serve the interest of neo-imperialists. “We appeal to the National Assembly to save Nigerian Muslims from annual embarrassment in NYSC camps. Our daughters are being derobed in public courtesy of a system that is blind to sociological realities, a system that has allowed itself to be enslaved by the culture of the colonial master. “We call on the Director General of the NYSC to desist from precipitating a religious crisis of monumental proportion over the hijab saga. Nigeria has enough on its hands already. The DG should stop stirring the hornet’s nest. “We insist that Nigerian Muslims cannot be intimidated. Nobody should test our will. Nigerian Muslims have the capacity to mobilize for peaceful protests in all NYSC camps across the country if the molestation of our daughters continue. Enough is enough. “We did not bargain for an NYSC that has been hijacked by religious bigots and Muslim-haters! “MURIC has a duty in loco parentis to cry out against the persecution of female Muslim corpers. They are our daughters and also our members. We charge all Islamic organizations in the country to rise to the occasion. “We cry out to our mothers-in-Islam in the Federation of Muslim Women Associations of Nigeria (FOMWAN), the Criterion and all other female Muslim organizations. It is taboo for a woman to ignore her child’s cry! Muslim women arise, the slave masters are dragging our daughters in the mud. “We advise female Muslim corpers to continue to use their hijab. It is their Allah-given fundamental human right. “We are keeping a tab on those unscrupulous elements who will snatch the hijab from the heads of our daughters or those power drunk officials who will expel them from NYSC camps. “Perhaps the time has come to revisit the whole gamut of this NYSC affair”, Mr. Akintola said. Out of favour Chelsea midfielder and Super Eagles midfielder, John Mikel Obi recently welcomed a set of twins with his longtime girlfriend, Olga Diyachenko. In a new chat with The Boss newspaper, Mikel Obi was asked if he’ll eventually marry Olga. See his reply below: – “I know, normal people don’t go through what I am going through now when it concerns finding a woman to marry, normal people don’t at all. Believe me it’s so so difficult, very difficult, it’s so so difficult you just have to leave it to God. To find someone who truly loves you, there might be someone who really loves me truly for who I am but I may not be aware but maybe you don’t know but you may think she’s one of those people that loves you for who you are or what you have, because of your money, but maybe she’s there for you, you never know, you get so confused, now I have decided I will just leave it to God to decide who I get married to’’. source:www.informationng.com/2015/11/only-god-can-decide-who-i-will-marry-says-mikel-obi-who-recently-welcome-twins-with-his-russian-gf.html

Following the current scarcity of Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise known as fuel, reports reveal that the product now sells at N180 per litre in Port Harcourt, the capital city of Rivers state. Fuel scarcity hits Nigeria’s economy hard. Reports also have it that at the black market, 10litres of petrol is currently being sold for N3, 000, while 20litres is N6, 000. This was despite the warnings put forward by the Department of Petroleum (DPR) which threatened to sell for free petroleum products of any marketer found to be hoarding products from members of the public. Some exasperated commercial motorists who gave their names as Clifford Orji and Cletus Festus, claimed they were at petrol station for endless hours but had no hope of buying the product. They complained that they did not care where the problem was coming from—tank farm owners, major or independent marketers—that they should resolve their problems and provide Nigerians with the products to buy. One of them said: “Port Harcourt has two refineries, numerous Tank Farms in Onne, Abonnema Warf, Port Harcourt ports, Iworfe and others, yet we continue to here unacceptable stories and excuses. “The scarcity is having its toll in the lives of residents of Rivers state pockets of parents whose children go to school with public transport. The cost of commercial transportation has doubled.” Residents of the city also disclosed that fare for buses which used to go for N50 increased to N100 per bus stop. In a similar development, it was also reported that taxis now charge N200 for every bus stop as against the previous fare at N1000. It was also disclosed that commuters who could not cope with the situation now rely on their legs to cut costs. However, to beat the watchful eyes of the DPR, owners of petrol stations now play hide and seek with officials of agency and sell their products at night to desperate customers and black marketers. It was however observed that very few Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) filling stations have products and sell at the official pump price of N87 per litre but are usually overcrowded by anxious motorists who form queues as early as 4am. Olaniyi Ibiyemi, the head of downstream sector of the DPR, had warned as directed by the minister of state for petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, that any petrol station that has petroleum products but refuses to sell, DPR officers should dispense such products free of charge and sanction the owners. He had categorically stated that marketers have no excuse to hoard or sell above pump price. The scarcity of petroleum products has thrown up other challenges. Traffic gridlock dots various roads where petroleum products are sold as desperate customers block dual carriage ways, like the Port Harcourt/Aba Expressway, East-West roads and Ikwerre road. On traffic congestions caused by anxious motorists who block the road in their desperate attempt to buy products, Ahmad Muhammad, public relations officer of the Rivers state police command assured that policemen would be deployed to monitor and direct traffic to ease the movement of members of the public who at that point in time where not buying petroleum products. Meanwhile, a petrol station, Alkad and Sons Nigeria Limited, in Olorunsogo, Ilorin, the Kwara state capital, suffered heavy losses yesterday, November 23, as the DPR gave out their fuel to motorists and motorcyclists free of charge. President Muhammadu Buhari during his working visit in Iran has disclosed that some treasury looters have commenced returning stolen money voluntarily. Meanwhile, the president stated that he was not pleased yet as his administration would stop at nothing to confirm all stolen funds and not a fraction was returned. The president revealed this during a communicating session he had with members of the Nigerian community living in Iran. The Nigerian leader didn’t list the names of the former government officials who have so far returned parts of stolen assets. Buhari also did not reveal how much had so far been returned to Nigeria’s treasury. The president stated that unlike what was appropriate in 1985 when he was a military head of state that suspects could be imprisoned while being probed, democracy and rule of law do not encourage that. He said: “ On corruption; yes, they (the past government officials) are still innocent. “But, we are collecting documents and some of them have started voluntarily returning something. But we want all. “When we get those documents, we will formally charge them to court and then we will tell Nigerians to know those who abused trust when they are entrusted with public funds. “So, the day of reckoning is gradually approaching.” President Buhari also pledged to deal conclusively with saboteurs who are destroying pipelines and stealing crude oil. “I believe if you are in touch back at home, you would have been told that already there is some improvement in power,” he noted. “ We haven’t said anything to them yet. I think they only find it sensible or appropriate for them to try and improve the power. “I’m sure you know about the privatisation of the power sector; your old friends NEPA or Power Holding Company of Nigeria have been sold to a number of interest groups. “Those who normally steal Nigerian crude and those who blow up installations, whether they call themselves militants or whatever, they are still there,” he said. Nigeria and other GECF members now account for 42 % of global gas production, 70 % of global gas reserves, 40 % of pipeline transmission of gas and 65 % of the global trade in Liquefied Natural Gas. President Buhari is expected back to Nigeria on November 24, Tuesday. source:https://www.naij.com/647129-looters-voluntarily-returning-stolen-funds-buhari.html |

A petrol station, Alkad and Sons Nigeria Limited, situated along Olorunsogo, Ilorin, Kwara state capital suffered heavy loss yesterday, November 23 as the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) gave out their fuel to motorists and motorcyclists free of charge. Daily Trust reports that the surveillance team of the DPR caught the station hoarding a total of 2300 litres of petrol, following a tip off. The station had allegedly told buyers that it had exhausted its stock but when the team led by Salvation Philip, the operation controller of DPR got there, they discovered the station had 2300 litres of fuel. Another station, Nasmut Nigeria Limited, located in Otte, Asa local government area of the state was found hoarding a large volume of petrol also. Philip ordered that the commodity be given to members of the public free, saying he was acting in accordance with the directive of Minister of State for Petroleum. He said: “ We are out for surveillance because of the situation on ground and we want to make sure that the fuel that comes in is distributed to commuters. When we got to this place (Alkad), we dug and discovered that they (management of the station) were hoarding 2300 litres of fuel. So, we are simply enforcing the ministerial directive. We are giving the fuel free to fellow Nigerians that need it. It is a critical time we have to utilize what is available. This is the second station so far we caught hoarding .” According to him, it would serve a warning to others hoarding or intending to hoard petroleum product. Philip added that anybody caught hoarding, diverting or flouting petroleum laws and regulations would be made to face the law. In past weeks, Nigerians have been groaning over the increasing scarcity of fuel across the country, with petrol stations hoarding the product and black marketers selling at exorbitant prices. Last week, Ibe Kachikwu, the minister of state for petroleum resources ordered the DPR to seal off fuel stations found to be hoarding petroleum products and give out the petroleum free to the public. source:https://www.naij.com/647048-dpr-distributes-hoarded-fuel-motorists-free-charge.html |
