PoliticsRe: Sam Omatseye, Under-Fire For Column On Achebe by NeoXVI: 6:45pm On Apr 08, 2013
I get tired of the comparison between ACA and WS. They are two literary giants in DIFFERENT genres, if you dumbos know what that means. Chinua wrote prose, Wole writes poetry and drama, mostly, except a few works like "you must set forth at dawn" which was prose recounting Nigerian history as it happened to him. So there is really no basis.

Chinua writes so the ordinary man can understand. You mostly have to have a dictionary nearby to understand Wole's works. Doesn't make one simplistic and the other deep. It certainly takes some depth to explain yourself in such a way that anyone can understand you, even though you are a very learned person yourself. Those of use in the technical fields will appreciate this better if you've ever tried to explain some technical paper to someone in the Arts.

They are both Nigerians, which should make us all proud. What then is the point of trying to pull down one, so the other appears greater?

WS got a very deserving Nobel price. Awesome! CA may or may not have gotten one, but his criticism of Conrad's work certainly dimmed his chances. Still, it doesn't take anything away from the ingenuity of the man. He has another title: the best selling African writer of all time. And he did a great job of disabusing the minds of the white man about intellectualism in Africa.

We should celebrate both of them..... and the upcoming Chimamanda as well.

To all the dumbos passing off as intellectuals( grin) and critics( shocked) of some of the greatest literary works of all time, who themselves can't put together three English sentences without tabun, please desist. You wash your dirty linens in public when you do that. You're inadvertently telling us the grammar school you couldn't graduate from.

PS: You know yourselves wink
PoliticsRe: Sam Omatseye, Under-Fire For Column On Achebe by NeoXVI: 5:58pm On Apr 08, 2013
Meanwhile, y'all should stop the back and forth. Chinua was one of the greatest writers of all time. Mr Omatseye, or whatever his name is, is an irrelevant journalist who'd obviously sell his own ma for a pot of porridge. So I don't see why anyone would take him seriously.

There wasn't a single leading newspaper house the world over that didn't write a major column on Achebe when he died. The piece on New York Times was trending for days. You should know what that means.

Does it take away that he and miami heat won an NBA ring?

Senseless analogies
You can't identify ANY member of Miami Heat YET you would stab Lebron if you see him? How would you recognize him then?
And what kind of dumb analogy is that?

Meanwhile good luck stabbing him (yoruba man with mouth sha grin). Your ass will rot in jail.

Barka de zuwa, Alhaji. Please go through threads from time to time and see the frustrations of Nigerian youths with our leadership and advice your friends in leadership positions to tow the path of integrity and vision. I have always maintained that the generation of our fathers (you included) failed us the younger generation, and if our youths are worse today than our fathers were, it is only because your generation did not show us any example.

We are a generation without role models
You taught us that honesty is not the best policy, corruption is.
You taught us that merit does not come before connections and nepotism, hence we have very lazy youths. What is the point of working hard when you cannot make any progress doing so?
You taught us about greed of epic proportions, where a single man embezzles money that even his fourth generation would not finish spending.
You taught us that it doesn't matter how you make your money, what matters is that you make it.

Bottomline Alhaji, your generation has failed us, and I'm not saying this as someone who is a failure. I'm saying it as someone who loves my fatherland deeply but who has to live in another man's land because my homeland is nothing to write home about. You guys should redeem yourselves - all of you who have had the opportunity to lead in Nigeria. You still have some time.

Nigeria has no excuse to still remain a third world country at this time, but persistent bad leadership has been our undoing.
PoliticsRe: Jonathan Lacks Capacity To Govern - Senator by NeoXVI: 12:00am On Mar 13, 2013
Addressing journalists at the National Assembly Complex yesterday, Omoworare (ACN, Osun East) said "the president is not doing enough. I've repeatedly said on the floor of the Senate that I personally have challenges with the president's capacity to administer Nigeria. He may be a good-natured man, but governing Nigeria takes more than being good-natured. I'm not a fan of former President Olusegun Obasanjo who sometimes does some self-glorification, but Obasanjo, even if wrong, was taking decisions, but the incumbent president doesn't take decisions and doesn't even understand the rudiments of governance."

"As a senator, I don't have light in my houses in Ife and Lagos. I know we still import fuel to favour some people...we've spent trillions of naira on fuel subsidy. These trillions would've been used to set up refineries, whether done by the government or by individuals; it doesn't matter to the electorate. Fuel can sell for less than N40 per litre in Nigeria if there are enough refineries," he said.

The legislator, who wished the PDP senators could support an impeachment move against Jonathan, said "the worst we can do to the president is impeachment. How many PDP senators will allow you to impeach him irrespective of how bad some of us feel he is? You can't even raise it, if you do, they (PDP senators) would shout you down. But there must be a limit to politics. As senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, if it's in the interest of Nigeria as a whole that we take a decision, let's take it."
All valid points as far as I'm concerned, except for fuel selling at N40. While I do not support impeaching him, I have no idea how people can even consider the man for another term. It beats the stretches of my imagination. Please let's all allow the man retire in peace and take his good-nature and cluelessness with him.
PoliticsRe: Foreigners Own 80% Of Oil Blocks Not Northerners - Femi Falana by NeoXVI: 9:49pm On Mar 11, 2013
For instance, I have a suit pending at the Federal High Court against the Ministry of Petroleum Resources over the renewal of the expired 40-year old licences of three oil blocks (which produce 580,000 barrels of crude oil per day) for Mobil Producing last year for the sum of $600 million notwithstanding that a Chinese oil company had offered to pay $5.8 billion for the same oil blocks!
My God! Is this true?

The fact that the comments here do not even address this shows the endemic problem with Nigeria - it's politics of personalities, not issues/ideas.

igbsam: Men, it wasn't an easy thing o! I was there when it all went down o! Just like being in a war zone. I was caught in between. You need to see the whole scenerio. It happend that the policemen got an information of those robbers approaching that route with the kind of cars they are driving in and all that. The police team caused a massive traffic gridlock waiting for the robbers, allowing cars to to pass through bit by bit and there was a slow movement of vehicles. On sighting the car, the policemen positioned themselves battle ready, when the robbers sighted them, they opened fire and the police force responded....you need to see the way people scampered for safety, all of us run leave our cars. Come see fire to fire.....Believe me you, no innocent person was shot. Just some cars were hit with bullets. Those police men sure knows how to shoot to aim. They are damn good. They killed quite a number of those robbers, i saw close to 5 bodies of them. Grown up men o! This one no be youths, dem be men, as in men. Come see juju wey dem tie for waste, hand and even the ones wey dem tie for their gun. The juju wey those robbers carry too much, but e no save them. Some people had the courage to go take pictures of them and even video the whole thing, but the fear of stray bullet no let me get that liver to record am, i for make nairaland i-reporter of the year. Hope those who had the courage to video it would show us soon.
Much as I like the fact that they were killed/arrested/thwarted, I'm not sure it was the best strategy to endanger lives the way they did. Engaging criminals in a crowded place should be a last resort, not the first thing that should come to their minds. What would be the excuse if those criminals have opened fire on innocent passers by?
They could have engaged them in a less crowded place, with two road blocks. Let them pass through the first and target them at the second, while blocking off cars from advancing after the criminals go through the first road block. The other lane should have been emptied too. That way you have only a small number of people at risk of being caught with stray bullets. Just saying o....

PoliticsRe: ACN & CPC Accuse PDP of floating Another APC by NeoXVI: 3:55pm On Mar 11, 2013
APC should stop crying foul and quickly conclude their registration. Besides, there is nothing sacrosanct in a name. If someone else takes it, look for another name and quickly register it. It's not the container that matters, it's the content. That said, I doubt the phantom APC will even meet the conditions set out, since the are faceless.

If PDP is behind it, as I suspect they are, there is nothing evil in it. It's all politics. Over in the USA, it happens with website addresses. If you publicly come up with an organization before securing a domain name, your opponent will get it to make life difficult for you and cut off easy access to your website. It may not be right, but it isn't evil. Welcome to politics

Bottomline, APC should quit bawling and wasting weeks on party logo, and conclude their merger quickly.

These guys don reach Epe? Na wa o. The painful thing is that the people in the urban planning office are making a kill collecting money from people to give them so-called approved surveys and land documents. You get such and you think you're good for life, only for another government to come tomorrow and tell you they were fraudulently acquired. Who do you go to? Where's the justice in that? It really sad. Everyone is just looking to rip off his neighbor by any means possible.

CFCfan: Senator Rand Paul raised some vital civil liberties issues during his filibuster. Many may view it as political theatre, but the American people have to really consider the ethics/legality of US drones targeting individuals within US territory.
I think they've clarified that now. They cannot target people with drones within US borders. Thanks to the man. That's what debates are supposed to be for - about issues, not personalities.

They knew the governor took the action for development purpose yet they are protesting ? Those guys need to be arrested and prosecute for causing public nuisance.
Is that why they should be given 24 hrs notice? Why do you people forget that these are humans and families we're talking about? What can they arrange in 24 hrs? When govt finally goes and levels the place you'll all come here telling us they gave them 6 months notice.

And they claim they have approved surveys for their buildings. I'm sure someone in the urban planning office collected money for those surveys and now they tell them they're all illegal structures. Where's the justice in that?

These western governors should stop the land grabbing under the guise of development that is always conveniently done on the backs of poor people.
PoliticsRe: Omotosho Power Plant Ready For Commissioning by NeoXVI: 2:42am On Mar 08, 2013
gbadexy: No doubt the president is trying his best.
I have never had anything against the man save for his removal of oil subsidy and inability to seriously tackle corruption. His not wanting to declare his assets and extravagant spending doesn't help too.
I give the president the credit for ensuring the completion of this plant and I acknowledge obj too because he started it and fast tracked it by bye passing bureaucracy that can slow down the project which led to the stalling of the project by successive administration.
The man is a good person no doubt and you can't but like and believe him when you hear him answer questions but na dat wasteful spending, unjust subsidy removal and lackadaisical attitude to corruption dey vex ♍ƺ for am.
You sycophants should know that obama get worse criticism and insults more than our president, you can read comments on yahoo news to confirm. Besides, the critics help keep the president on his toes. And many people are exposed and know what is obtainable elsewhere, hence their complaint on some seemingly mediocre performance .
Thank you my bruv...

I think we should always be sincere and fair in our assessments. And in that case, the president deserves commendation on this count. 500MW addition to our generating capacity is a welcome development, and no matter who laid the groundwork, or signed off the contract, the present administration deserves commendation and encouragement. After all, OBJ reportedly spent $16 billion on the power sector and we didn't get much out of it. Hence the hypocrisy of the ACN guys here is really dumb. This is definitely a bigger, better news than lighting up Ikorodu road. However, it's not as if the PDP guys are any better. They are also usually hypocritical in their responses also as regards Fashola's good works. That's why being an independent is the coolest thing grin tongue wink cheesy

That said, we should ALWAYS demand more from our governments cos they can definitely do more to cut waste and minimize corruption. Until we get to the promised land, we must keep demanding more.
Foreign AffairsRe: Incredible! American Senator Debates For 13 Hours! by NeoXVI(op): 4:39pm On Mar 07, 2013
pro01: Filibuster, or is that not what it is called? It's permissible in the US Senate, but I'm not sure whther the rules permit or forbid it in Nigeria's National Assembly. I can imagine the Senate President (or indeed any other disgruntled senator) calling you to order if you attempt to filibuster (for a merely 20 minutes sef) to prevent the passage of bill and whatnot.

In any case, we do not have sufficient number of intelligent people in the Senate to debate on any meaningful matter for close to one hour, let alone 13 hours. Although they can share money for 48 hours non-stop.
Exactly. And that is largely because of the political climate in Nigeria which screens out intelligent, career people leaving thugs to run the show, most of the time at least. See the case with the Ogun state house of assembly recently. In the US the culture and process ensures that such people are weeded out most of the time. You have to do fundraising from ordinary people and corporations, and you better have some good policy ideas to relay to them. You also have to debate a few times with your opponents. That's also an opportunity to weed out thugs and unserious people. But in Naija all you need is a godfather to bankroll the whole thing and rig elections and you're elected.

I know they didn't get there in one day, so hopefully we will get there too. Let's hope the military continue to stay in their barracks and leave democracy to grow. We should self-adjust with time.

intelligent? He was talking about Jay-z and Lil Wayne at one point lol.

Filibusters are common in the US. One man read the entire NY phone-book on time which gives the phone numbers of over 12 million people and 5 million plus businesses.
LOL. That must have been a wingnut, reading an entire phone book. And the surprising thing is that they let you have your say, until you willingly yield the floor. I was reading of a debate in the Nigerian senate where someone stood up to oppose what another was saying. He asked the senate president to stop the man from talking because he was reading facts from a newspaper. How weird is that? Why can't you corroborate your points with newspaper articles? It's supposed to be a debate for goodness sake.

chingyjant: If Republicans nor die for Obama matter na small thing. What questions and answer made each and every member of the committee to seat that long?Simply because they want to rubbish every candidate of Obama that he has nominated.Republicans ain't different from APC in Nigeria.Opposition with bitterness
Uhm... I don't quite think so. It's a civil liberties question, and one democrat joined the debate in support. Frankly, most people were surprised that more democrats didn't join as civil liberties has always been their forte. I guess they don't want to sound like they're opposing Obama. As for APC, I think an opposition's duty is always to seek to contrast positions with the ruling party wherever they can. It doesn't necessarily make it "opposition with bitterness".
Foreign AffairsIncredible! American Senator Debates For 13 Hours! by NeoXVI(op): 7:45am On Mar 07, 2013
American senator Rand Paul of Kentucky State and a member of the Republican party held the nation spellbound on Wednesday by debating for almost 13 hours. So far it ranks as the 9th longest debate time by a single senator in American senate history. The issue at hand is the confirmation vote for a new CIA director. President Obama nominated John Brennan for the position and it will come up for votes as soon as Senator Paul concludes his debate. However, the fiery senator is using this debate to protest the administration's drone policy. It used to target only foreign nationals or US citizens outside US borders but in recent years it has been expanded to include targeting US citizens in US soil IF THE NEED FOR IT ARISES, such as if an american citizen were confirmed to be involved in imminent terrorist attacks.

The entire nation has been held spellbound since his debate started at 11:47 ET. He has taken a few short breaks to snack or go to the bathroom while other senators filled in for him. He promised to keep speaking until he could no longer speak, or until the administration provides the answers he seeks.

This should be a lesson for our own senators, who took years to pass the FOI and have yet to pass the PIB bill, that being a senator is not all about sharing money in ghana-must-go bags. It should also be a lesson to our citizens that we have to ask hard questions of our elected representatives. To not do so is to abdicate our God-given rights. Good leadership depends on good followership and that is not all about saying 'yes sir' like a sheep all the time.

Twitter was literally on fire all through as citizens stood by the senator in a rare show of support for a senator that is frankly not well-liked
