Four opposition political parties, ACN, CPC, ANPP and APGA resolved Wednesday to float a new party - the All Progressive Congress (APC).

The chairman of ACN merger committee and the spokesman of the coalition told journalists that with the formation of the new party, the opposition parties would commence the processes of registering it with INEC.

CFCfan: Haha. The PDP leadership is afraid of their fate come 2015. The new mega party has about 2 years to strategise and sell it's policy thrusts to the electorate.

This country needs a strong opposition party to keep PDP on its toes. I believe there will be a political shift in Nigeria come 2015.

Intense lobbying and jostling have picked up among political actors currently serving in different capacities at the federal and state levels wanting to succeed the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), after the expiration of his tenure in 2015.

Prominent among the aspirants are Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat; Senator Ganiyu Solomon, representing Lagos West Senatorial District; Senator Gbenga Ashafa, representing Lagos East Senatorial District; the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji; and ex-Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Muiz Banire.

Other aspirants interested in the job include Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila; Commissioner for Agriculture and Cooperatives; former Governor Bola Tinubu’s aide-de-camp, Mr. Gbolahan Lawal; and the immediate past Accountant-General of the state, Mr. Akin Ambode.

Another possible replacement for Fashola is the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Adeola Ipaye, although he is said not to be interested in the core politics of the state.

It was however gathered that the governorship position might be zoned to the Lagos East Senatorial Zone, taking into cognisance the fact that the serving governor comes from Lagos Central while his predecessor is from Lagos West.

If the governorship slot is eventually zoned to Lagos East, as is being canvassed, the move will put paid to the governorship ambitions of Hamzat (Lagos West), Gbajabiamila (Lagos Central), Lawal (Lagos Central), Banire (Lagos West), and Solomon (Lagos West) as possible contenders, leaving Ashafa, Ambode and Ikuforiji, who is currently facing graft charges, in the race.

But in response to enquiries on contenders for the race, the state’s Chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Mr. Oladele Ajomale, said the party’s leaders “are not talking about the governorship election yet,” stating that the party was yet to deliberate on such issue.”

The chairman, however, expressed strong opposition to the principle of zoning, noting that the principle “is a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) formula and not ACN’s. We do not believe in such ideas. We believe in picking the best.”

He said the next governor of the state could come from any part of the state, adding, “Our responsibility is to get the best and only the best will be good for the state.

“Wherever the candidate comes from, it does not matter. It is only those that can perform that will emerge eventually.

“It is not about zoning. Someone who cannot perform cannot govern the state. The state is too discriminatory for that. We always want the best. The only thing the state deserves is a quality candidate.

“We cannot choose someone who will drag the party backwards. The next governor of the state must be someone who will shatter the records of the incumbent governor.

“When the time comes, the right candidate will emerge. I have not seen anyone who is interested yet.”
On Somolon’s declaration to contest for the position, Ajomale explained that all qualified candidates “have the right to say what he or she want. But I am in the best position to tell the truth. The party is yet to decide who will
be the next governor of the state. But when the time comes, we will do that.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the meeting of 10 opposition governors, who met to approve merger talks by their parites, as a welcome development, but cautioned against overheating the polity or inciting Nigerians to violence.

The party said that It is the belief of the PDP that everything should be played according to the rules of the game.

shymexx: The use of wingers isn't redundant if you have the required players to execute it... The Chelsea team that dominated the premiership during Mourinho's era was quintessentially a wing-style team with Damien Duff and Arjen Robben.... Real Madrid, Brazil, and Barcelona still play wing-style football with overlapping full backs...

As for this naija team, we just don't have the players to prosecute that - our left back is rubbish, and our shaky holding midfielders won't be able to cover for the full backs if/when they overlap...

every serious team deploys the wing-play. even when you have inverted wingers who love to cut in, the full backs become wing backs. what's brazil without roberto carlos or cafu? what's man utd without valencia/nani? what's bayern without ribery/robben? barcelona sef use alves and alba as the outlet to supply the crosses. the best nigerian team ever had finidi/amuneke tearing defences!

Unfortunately, I don't have Keshi's number else I would have called him myself to ask the question. Ahmed musa would have done the job of a right winger but his performance so far hasn't been that fantastic. I hope he gets his groove back. Victor Moses hasn't been bad on the left wing though.

coogar: i would give keshi 6/10. he did good but he can do better.
we were too monotonous - the routes to attack ivory coast were too few. we were only hitting hit/miss long balls and ivory coast dealt with those threats comfortably. seriously, what happened to our expansive wing play of yore?

keshi was part of the 94 team - he knew how deadly amuneke and finidi were on the flanks. we used to have elahor, tijani babangida, pius ikedia, etc. there has been no brilliant wing play from us this tournament! the wing backs don't overlap to create options for our wingers and on another day, we could have drawn n settled for a shoot-out!

i wouldn't quite agree keshi's tactics worked - ivory coast were just too poor by their high standards. the winner was just a brilliant piece of individual play, nothing to do with tactics or system. if mba had lost the ball with his mazy run, we could have conceded a goal easily cos he left a big gap at the back which was quite risky.

This is exactly what I have been asking myself and other football pundits for a long time now. Over the years, the use of the wings to unleash a deadly attack or volley of accurate crosses have become redundant. Is it because the use of the wings is becoming less popular in recent times? Someone please educate me.

In the early hours of this morning, I had a dream the Super Eagles won the Ivorians by 2 goals. There was much celebration after the match and a group of players went to the a corner of the stadium were the Nigerians supporters were situated and began singing and dancing. The match was a very tough one. The Super Eagles fought very hard for the win. I don't know if this dream will come to pass.

That said, it's unlikely the Super Eagles will win the Elephants of Ivory Coast. If they want to win then they have to fight very hard from the beginning of the starting whistle to the end of the match.



However, I apologise for my lack of faith even after seeing in my dream the Super Eagles beating the Ivorians by 2 goals. Congratulations to the Super Eagles. That was a match well won!

Before the match, I was doubtful of the Super Eagles to hold the Ivorians to their game but I must say I'm impressed with their first half display. They came in with a game plan and they were very deadly with their set pieces which eventually produced a stunning strike. If they continue to play like this in the second half, they might end up winning the match. I hope they can keep this lead and go ahead to pummel the Ivorian Elephants.

Well done boys! Even if you lose this game, you would have proved yourselves true champions.

Oh my God. If African political leaders managed their resources effectively, why would they need financial aid from Western nations. You talk as if receiving aid is Africa's right.

ROSSIKE: You give too much respect to these guys just because you see them at Arsenal and Chelsea. Emenike is far more dangerous than Kalou, and Ike Uche is more of a threat than Gervinho. But those Nigerians are not in Chelsea and Arsenal so you don't rate them. I agree the Super Eagles have flashes of brilliance individually but it's not just clicking for them as a team. Let's speak the truth for once and stop getting high on blind patriotism. We all know the Super Eagles do not have that bite, that quality to win Ivory Coast. Except they come up with a tight game plan and strategy to win this match, I'm afraid it's going to be a painful loss to Nigeria. Who will contain Gervinho, or Kalou? Is there any player to frustrate the Toure brothers or Drogba? I have set my default expectation to heartbreak. If the Super Eagles win the match then it's a pleasant surprise!

manmustwac: I sometimes think the same thing myself, two teams huddled together in a circle on both sides of the pitch, praying for the same God to help their team win the match. Since both teams are religious which team dose God support is it the team with the highest amount of Christians that pay their tithes every week, or the team that pays their 1st fruit 2nd fruit and 100th fruit, the team with the most players that go to church every Sunday midweek and end of the month church service or the team that reads their bible on a regular basis? The answer is none of the above. In REALITY the team that wins is the team that has planned, prepared, has the best players and can work very well together as a unit.

You can even use football to look at the state of the nigerian economy. We have the worst players all greedy and selfish not willing to work together as a team to help our country progress and depending on prayers like our football players. Prayers will not guarantee any team (especially nigeria) success in this nations cup or aany football competition. Prayers are nothing but superstition.

Now this is what I call an intelligent contribution!
