You started out well and would have given you the thumbs up for it until you resorted to insults.

However, many Binis insist that the word 'oba' is a bini word. I don't understand all the fury hauled at me for mentioning something some Edos actually believe themselves. I am not Bini neither am I re-writing your history but there are some words which their origins are in contention.

Another Bini writer that writes on the possible Bini origin of 'oba':

http://www.raceandhistory.com/historicalviews/edoculture.htm

The Binis have every right to their cultural assertion and historical beliefs.

The Binis had Ogisos before the Oba Eweka and the very first Ogiso was Obagodo, meaning that the usage of Oba in Bini kingdom long precedes the time of Oba Eweka, related to the Yoruba monarchy.

cc: NigerMan1

you didn't say the word was in contention in your post, rather you states it as a matter for fact................ don't be a coward pls.

You are not only a bigot but a coward.

Your initial post was you making an authoritative statement and you had to include your obsession with Lagos in it.

You could have stated in your initial post that there is another school of thought as to the origin of the word "Oba". But NO YOU DID NOT DO THAT grin, rather you came out gun blazing as if you are actually setting a record straight.

Of course some bini scholars have a different view on the Yoruba/Bini history. That does not give you the right to quote a counter claim as authoritative source on factual matters.

I think my intelligence and mental expectations of you are too high.

keep quiet? So, he shouldn't air his views again just because he is a MOD?especially when he is trying to effect some corrections to subtle attemps to distort history? You need to stop muzzling people to tow your line of thought...it's actually okay for someone to hold a different opinion from you.

Actually difference in opinion is good.

However making a false statement as truthful factual is wrong.

In this case, Mr. MOD is the one trying to distort facts of our History. cheesy

Politics / Re: Senator Aisha Alhassan Is Not The First Female Governor In Nigeria. See Who Is by NewNigeriaMind: 6:37pm On Nov 08, 2015
Kelklein:
There has been a media frenzy (both print and online) following the tribunal judgement in Taraba celebrating Senator Aisha Alhassan as the first female governor in Nigeria.

I want to quickly correct here, for the sake of education, that she is not the first female governor Nigeria has had. The first female governor was Virginia Etiaba of Anambra state.

According to Wikipedia, Dame Virginia Ngozi Etiaba was the Governor of Anambra State, a state in south-eastern Nigeria, from November 2006 to February 2007. She is the first female governor in Nigeria's history.

Neither does it mean that I cannot come in to correct an impression where necessary. Yet you didn't address the disconnect I pointed out between your initial post and the source you are quoting. you are a bigot even if you don't realize it, in your subconscious you are a bigot that's why on reflex you make silly comments to attack yorubas without even knowing it.

Your source is a tribalist forum attacking anything everything Yoruba.

I am not misinforming anybody. I have evidence for what I had said:

http://ihuanedo.ning.com/forum/topics/why-yoruba-never-had-an-empire-but-civilized-by-benin?groupUrl=healtheducation&x=1&groupId=2971192%3AGroup%3A14663&id=2971192%3ATopic%3A124153&page=1

I am not derailing the thread and, just like others, only corrected some of the words the wordlist the op provided. Others, Urhobos I believe, have corrected him on some of the words he listed as Urhobo to not be Urhobo words but gave their actual Urhobo words.

Anyway, I have made my point.

You should be ashamed of yourself as a MOD, seun please how can you make this tribalist a MOD.

Your sources is from a website that is everything anti-Yoruba.

Leaving that aside, what is the correlation between this two.

From your initial post:

Ancient Yoruba kings were never addressed as Oba but were known by their various territorial titles such as alaafin of xyz, ajuwale of abc. We begin to see the appearance of Oba in Yoruba land after the Binis conquered Lagos and installed an Oba of Lagos (mind you this Oba was a Bini Oba, not a Yoruba Oba, ruling over Lagos) after which the usage of 'Oba' began to spread over Yoruba land.

Now the source you quoted says this:

(8.). "Oba" is a word adopted from Benin and not Yoruba as many made us to believe. There is no king of Yoruba's people. and if there is, what was his title?;how many Yoruba prominent traditional leaders/rulers carried the title Oba? since when?.if Yoruba calls their king Oba,it doesn't mean we derived our king's name (N'Oba) from them. Everyone has a name for king in the their native language/tongue. The Oba of Lagos is Eleko of Eko not Oba, the British change it to Oba. the Origin of word "oba" is Benin

what is use of this "the Binis conquered Lagos and installed an Oba of Lagos" in the context of your source "Eleko of Eko not Oba"

you are shameless tribalist cheesy

you are really dumb THOUGH cause the reasonable question is, are we are to believe Oba is a Bini WORD( EVEN THOUGH THE BINI PEOPLE DONT CLAIM IT TO BE SO) because of this "British change it to Oba." and your ignorant and hate filled sources concluded without any eveidence in the write up "the British change it to Oba. the Origin of word "oba" is Benin"

Like Ilekeh ASKED, one day you Igbo people will say Eko is an Igbo word cheesy

One day an ignorant father will tell his children OBA is not a Yoruba word but a Bini word,

15 years later, the ignorant father has transfer his ignorance to his next generation, the ignorant adults will begin to argue with other enlighten people that they know for a fact OBA is not a Yoruba word.

Such is the situation we find ourselves with these people.

@OP...Jesu, Omo and Oba are not Yoruba words. Jesu is derived from Jesus and cannot be considered Yoruba in anyway. Jesu is only a localized adaptation of the Jesus name in Christianity amongst Igbos and Yorubas. Jesus Christ is Jesu Kristi in Igbo as well.

Omo is common to Edo languages, Urhobo, Isoko, and Yoruba and cannot be said to be derived from Yoruba specifically.

As for Oba, I think you are looking for the origin far beyond where you should. Oba is a Bini/Edo word and NOT a Yoruba word.

You also forgot to include that 'igho' is similar to 'ego' in Igbo for money. tongue

In a very informative thread such as this, this post will qualify for the dumb-mest( if there exist such a word) post in NL today. coming from a MOD I am shocked.

Whoever paid your school fees, go and return it, you are not very smart. I am saying this with all sense of responsibility.

Olodo ni bobo yi o

And I heard this guy is a mod, really?

grin cheesy

Bros you make sense, make I add:

Ancient Benin/Edo used Oghiso, not Oba.

Prior to Oduduwa, Ife (Yoruba) had several hamlets all headed by Kings. The lineage of these kings are still in existance and these kings still play the role of controlling their hamlets with Ooni being the overall head thereby reducing them to what seems like 'Chief-King' status.

Some of these kings before Oranmiyan was born or even went to set up Oba Benin in Benin Empire were: Obalufe, Obawinrin, Obalaaye, Obatala, Obadio, Obaloran, Obajio, Obalurin, Obanurin, Obalale, Obalesun, Obalejugbe, Obalepon the list is long, I'll stop here.

From the above, tell me how 'Oba' which means 'the person overseeing, sitting, lording over everything' is a Benin word again. And how Yoruba supposedly borrowed it from Benin and used it for many centuries before Oranmiyan went to give Benin 'Oba of Benin' dynasty.

That Big fornothing Francis no sabi anything at all.

Thanks for clarifying it for the guy, I was shocked when I read his initial post. Na wa........

Even the bini man will not cliam Oba is a Bini word
