Lagos State University (LASU) has announced the closure of all its part times programs after graduating most of the students in its external systems.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof Olanrewaju Adigun Fagbohun during an interactive session at the university premises with journalists said LASU has ended its external systems programs adding that all the buildings used as campuses have been returned to their owners.

AAU ASUU NOT FACTIONALISED, SAYS CHAIRMAN
Monday Igbafen, chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ambrose Ali University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, has debunked reports that the union was factionalised.
Igbafen spoke to journalists in Benin City, the state capital in reaction to media reports that the union had been engulfed in a leadership crisis, which disrupted its election scheduled for February 27, 2018.

SEX-FOR-MARK SCANDAL: OAU PROF. RECOMMENDED FOR INDEFINITE SUSPENSION
The woes of Prof. Richard Akindele, a professor at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile –Ife, have been compounded after a committee instituted to investigate the sexual harassment allegations against him recommended his indefinite suspension.

The investigative panel set up by the OAU management is said to have indicted Prof. Richard Akindele and recommended him for immediate suspension.

FARMERS/HERDSMEN CLASHES: ‘ONLY FG CAN END IT’ SAYS PROF. EYITOPE
The Vice Chancellor, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Professor Eyitope Ogunmodele on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to legislate against the free range of domestic animals like cattle to end the frequent bloody clashes between herdsmen and farmers in Nigeria.

Professor Ogunmodele made this call in Ibadan while speaking at the opening of 2018 annual in-house review exercise of the Institute of Agricultural Research and Training (IAR&T), Moore Plantation, Ibadan, themed, “Agricultural Research and Sustainable Food and Raw Materials Promotion: The Challenges of Climate Change”.

PARENTS WANT REMAINS OF TARABA VARSITY STUDENT BURIED IN CAMEROON
Parents of Yusuf Mohammed, one of the three students of Taraba State University killed by falling trees in Cameroon have requested that his remains be buried in Cameroon.

Mohammed and two other students were killed when trees fell on them during an ill-fated research trip at the Bouba Njidda National Wild Life Park in Cameroon.

NIGERIA TO GROW BY 2.1% THIS YEAR, IMF PROJECTS
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says Nigeria, sub-Saharan Africa’s most-populous nation and top crude producer, will grow by 2.1 per cent this year, matching the lender’s estimate released in January.

In its Africa Pulse report released on Wednesday, the Washington-based Fund said South Africa, the world’s biggest source of platinum, would expand by 1.5 per cent, more than the 0.9 per cent prediction three months ago.

WORLD BANK KNOCKS NIGERIA, OTHER AFRICAN COUNTRIES FOR RISING DEBTS
The World Bank has raised the alarm over rising debts in African countries, including Nigeria.

While releasing ‘Africa’s Pulse’, a biannual analysis of African economies in Washington on Wednesday, the World Bank’s Chief Economist Africa, Albert Zeufack; Lead Economist, Africa, Punam Chuhan-Pole; and Research Manager, Michael Toman, said the continent had been showing positive growth but warned that its debt was increasing in at a very high rate.

CBN INJECTS ANOTHER $210M INTO FOREX MARKET
The Central Bank of Nigeria has intervened with another sum of $210m in the foreign exchange market to meet the requests of customers, as the regulator continues its efforts to maintain a stable exchange rate for the naira.

A breakdown of the figures obtained from the bank in Abuja on Tuesday, indicated that the CBN offered the sum of $100m to authorised dealers in the wholesale segment of the market, just as it allocated the sum of $55m each to the Small and Medium-scale Enterprises segment and the invisibles segment to meet needs for tuition and medical payments and Basic Travel Allowance, among others.

NSE: INVESTORS’ WEALTH PLUMMETS BY N6 BILLION ON PROFIT TAKING
Transactions on the equity sector of the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) closed on a downward note yesterday, following price losses suffered by the majority of the highly capitalised stocks, causing market capitalisation to plunge by N6 billion.

Yesterday, the All-Share Index (ASI), which measures the performance of listed equities shed 16.42 points, representing a 0.04 per cent slide to close at 40,772.26 points from 40, 788.68 at which it opened on Tuesday.

RECOVER THE MACE WITHIN 24 HOURS, NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ORDERS IG, DSS BOSS
Members of the House of Representatives were ushered into the Senate chamber at 11:35 am today (Wednesday) as they expressed solidarity with the senators over the mace theft.

The joint session resolved that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris; and the Director-General of the Department of State Services, Lawal Daura, must recover the stolen mace “within 24 hours.”

ARMED THUGS WALK INTO SENATE IN SESSION, STEAL MACE
Armed thugs, allegedly led by a suspended senator, Ovie Omo-Agege, walked into Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber in a plenary session at about 11:15 (Nigerian time) Wednesday (today) and stole the mace, Senate spokesman Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi said.

A Bitcoin company in Calabar has disappeared into thin air with millions of Naira of customer’s money. As early as 8 am on Friday, customers besieged the company’s office on Bassey Duke only to discover that the company had closed shop and vanished with their money.

2018 Utme: Jamb Speaks On Cut Off Mark Controversy
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has distanced itself from a purported cut-off mark being circulated in some sections of the media, saying it did not emanate from the board.

Unical Matriculates 9,200 Students
The University of Calabar has matriculated 9, 200 new students for the 2017/2018 academic year with the Faculty of Education recording the highest with 2,226 students, seconded by the Faculty of Social Sciences with 1,125. Faculty of Pharmacy admitted only 45 students, being the least in the admission record.

Two families have sued the founder of Dangote Group of companies and Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, and his companies, following the killing of their relatives in an accident involving a truck they claimed belong to the businessman’s company.

A human right advocacy group, Socio-Economic rights and accountability, Project (SERAP), has urged the authorities of the University of Ibadan and Adekunle Ajajsin University to reverse the recent hike in fees or be ready to face legal action.

According to a statement signed by SERAP Deputy Director, Mr. Timothy Adewale, on Thursday in Lagos described the hike in fees as “illegal”

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Monday said it has concluded plans to hold the convocation ceremony that was earlier postponed, saying it will now take place from May 8 through May 11 this year.

EU BANK UNVEILS $25M SOLAR SYSTEM PROJECT FOR AFRICA
The European Investment Bank (EIB–the EU bank) yesterday, signed a $25m financing installation of off-grid solar systems with the aim of strengthening access to energy in Nigeria and four other African countries.

RENO OMOKRI WANTS PASTOR ADEBOYE TO CALL OSINBAJO TO ORDER
Reno Omokri, on Tuesday, asked the General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, to call Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to order for accusing Jonathan of sharing N150 billion two weeks to the 2015 elections.
The media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan assistant made the call in a statement he issued yesterday, debunking a claim by the vice president that while it spent a paltry N14 billion on agriculture in 2014, N15 billion on transportation, and only N153 billion on infrastructure in three years, it shared N150 billion two weeks to the 2015 elections.

PARENTS CONFIRM RELEASE OF DAPCHI SCHOOLGIRLS
Boko Haram Islamists who kidnapped more than 100 schoolgirls in Dapchi, Yobe State, just over a month ago have returned the students to the town, two parents said on Wednesday.
“The girls have been brought back. They were brought in nine vehicles and dropped outside the school at about 8:00 am (0700 GMT),” Bashir Manzo, who heads a group set up to support parents whose children were abducted told the AFP.
