UNILAG STUDENTS DONATE BLOOD TO SICKLE CELL CHILD PATIENTS
No fewer than 360 students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) turned out on Wednesday to donate a pint of blood each to sickle cell and cancer child patients.
The donors trooped out in multitudes to donate their blood at the New Hall and Bookshop areas of the Akoka campus where makeshift blood transfusion centres were provided.

SUSPECTED CULTISTS INVADE CORPERS LODGE, CUT-OFF CORPS’ MEMBER’S HAND
A Youth corps’ members’ lodge at Angalabiri community in Sagbama Local Government of Bayelsa State was on Sunday attacked by suspected cultists who were said to have cut off the left hand of one of the corps’ members.

FG URGED TO EXTEND SCHOOL FEEDING TO OTHER PUPILS

The Federal Government has been urged to extend the school feeding programme to other primary school pupils.
Mrs. Fidelia Abazu, school teacher and health officer, Igwebueze Primary School 1, Ifite Awka, made the call in Awka, saying that some pupils feel unhappy watching only the primary 1-3 being served different kinds of food each day.

VITAMIN D LINKED TO LOWER RISK OF CANCER, NEW STUDY CLAIMS
Higher levels of Vitamin D in the blood may be linked to a lower risk of developing certain cancers, a study in Japanese adults reported Thursday.
“These findings support the hypothesis that Vitamin D has protective effects against cancers at many sites,” researchers reported in a study published in The BMJ medical journal.

REPS OPPOSE AJAOKUTA CONCESSION PLAN, TO AMEND PRIVATISATION LAW
The House of Representatives has gone a step further in its opposition to the concession of the Ajaokuta Steel Company by proposing to amend the Privatisation Act.

POLICE KILL WANTED PORT HARCOURT KIDNAP KINGPIN, ARREST THREE GANG MEMBERS

LAGOS GOVT, PROPRIETORS AGREE TO CLOSE SCHOOLS INDICTED FOR EXAM MALPRACTICES
The Lagos State Government and proprietors of private schools have reached an accord to shut down any school indicted by the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) for examination malpractices.
Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, the Deputy Governor of the state, expressed her concern about the indictment of schools by WAEC. She revealed that some private schools are serial offenders that encourage examination malpractices for three consecutive years.

BENUE KILLINGS: IGP ALLEGEDLY DISOBEYED BUHARI’S ORDER TO RELOCATE TO BENUE
There seems to be more to the Fulani herdsmen killings in Benue State as the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, has been alleged with disobeying the order of President Muhammadu Buhari to relocate Makurdi at the dawn of the crisis.

FEMI ADESINA: IT’S STILL AN ALLEGATION THAT IGP DID NOT STAY IN BENUE
Spokesman to the President, Femi Adesina has declared that it is still an allegation that Ibrahim Idris, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), failed to heed President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive to relocate to Benue.

The Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), an agency tasked with cleaning up the country’s oil industry, has said even though financial accountability has improved, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) still has not explained billions of dollars of missing revenue.

$12B TRANS-SAHARAN GAS PROJECT TO MISS 2018 DEADLINE
The $12 billion Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Project (TSGP), expected to help Nigeria achieve zero gas flaring by 2020, remains an illusion, 17 years after it was conceived.

BUHARI HIKES EXCISE DUTY RATES ON ALCOHOL, TOBACCO
President Muhammadu Buhari has approved an amendment to the excise duty rates for alcoholic beverages and tobacco with effect from Monday, June 4, 2018.
Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, who made this known on Sunday in Abuja, stated that the new excise rates were spread over a three-year period from 2018 to 2020 in order to moderate the impact on prices of the products.

Britain To Build 112-Bed Prison Wing In Kirikiri.

British foreign secretary, Boris Johnson has announced that Britain will build a new 112-bed wing at Kirikiri Prison in Lagos so that it can transfer Nigerian prisoners currently in UK prisons there.

U.S Donates $533M Humanitarian To Africa.

The United States has announced $533 million in humanitarian assistance for African nations facing life-threatening food insecurity and malnutrition.
The US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson announced the grant on Wednesday

Sen Adamu Denies Alleged Plot To Remove Saraki.

The Lagos state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has kicked against the elongation of the tenure of the party’s national and state executives, saying it is against the constitution.

Sixteen persons, including a herdsman, were on Monday killed in a fresh clash at Omutu community in Okpokwu local government area of Benue state.

The killing is coming barely 24 hours after two persons were killed by herdsmen in Humeger, Guma local government area of the state.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday re-arraigned a former governor of Oyo State, Adebayo Alao-Akala, and two others in an Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan over alleged N11.5 billion fraud.

Sri Lanka’s Health Ministry said on Monday it would soon seek cabinet approval to raise the age limit of cigarette sale to adults from 18 to 21 years.

Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne said that the proposals would soon be drafted, and following cabinet approval, cigarette sales would be banned to anyone below the age of 21 years.

He said steps were also being taken to ban the sale of cigarettes near schools across the island in order to discourage students from smoking.

Despite the recent Transparency International’s report which recorded Nigeria’s war on corruption as having regressed between 2016 and 2017, President Muhammadu Buhari has said that his administration is winning the war on corruption in the country.

According to TI, Nigeria regressed from 136 in 2016 to 148 in 2017 in its Corruption Perception Index (CPI), a claim the Buhari administration has pushed hard against.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo says Nigeria dropped in only one of the indices used by Transparency International (TI) in corruption perception for 2017.

While the country scored 27/100 and was ranked 136th in 2016, the latest CPI scores Nigeria 28/100 but with a rank of No. 148 out of 180 countries surveyed — a significant 12 places below where it was the previous year.

Suspected kidnappers on Wednesday abducted the wife and child of a reporter with the Voice of America (VOA) in Kaduna.

The abductors also killed a staff of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), who rushed out to help the victims.

The reporter, Malam Nasir Birnin-Yero, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the abductors, about 30 in number, attacked his residence in Birnin Yero, near Kaduna at about 1:30 am.
