Daft defensive errors and a failure to implement an effective pressing style – although there were some notable improvements in that regard – ensured a comfortable victory for the Premier League champions. But despite a tough defeat on the first day, there were certainly encouraging signs for Unai Emery’s team; namely young midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, whose tenacious attitude and relentless enthusiasm was swiftly admired by the Emirates faithful. During their illustrious history, the Merseysiders have failed to put the hands on the coveted top-flight title, but yesterday’s authoritative success showed that they could be a real menace to Manchester City, who also kicked off their campaign with a win against Arsenal on Sunday. Normal service was resumed at Anfield with Mohamed Salah opening the scoring with Sadio Mane bagging a brace of goals, and that pairing alongside Roberto Firmino will yet again be the star triumvirate that terrorises defences all season.
