THREE NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES EMERGE IN MARITIME BLUEPRINT COMPETITION
Three universities have emerged winners in the Maritime Blueprint Competition in which law students from six universities participated.

The universities are Bowen University, Iwo Ondo State, University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Ekiti State University (EKSU).

According to reports, the competition was sponsored by SIFAX Group as part of the activities of the Taiwo Afolabi Annual Maritime Conference which entered its third edition.

NIGER STATE CORPS MEMBERS TO TAKE ORIENTATION IN KADUNA – NYSC
The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in Niger says its 2018 Batch B stream II members will take their orientation in Kaduna State.

It said that this was based on directives to hold the orientation in a cluster in 19 States due to the limited number of corps members in the batch across the country.

This was contained in a statement by Theresa Arokoyo, the NYSC Coordinator in Niger and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Minna.

SUSPECTED CULTISTS KILL EX-CSO OF IBADAN POLYTECHNIC
A former Chief Security Officer (CSO) of the Polytechnic, Ibadan, Ahmed Olalekan, has been shot dead by suspected cultists.

The hoodlums reportedly traced him to his home in Apete, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Olalekan, a graduate of the institution, was shot on the neck on Monday by suspected members of the dreaded Aiye Confraternity of Nigeria.

18-YEAR-OLD CRUSHED TO DEATH AFTER REGISTERING FOR PVC
It was a tragic moment in Kaduna yesterday when an 18-year-old girl, Regina Solomon, who went for the ongoing Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Permanent Voters Card (PVC) registration, was crushed to death by a truck.

An eyewitness said the victim was standing by the roadside waiting for a commercial bus when the truck ran into her. The victim was going home from Kujama, in Chikun local government area of Kaduna.

A family source, Grace Ojo, who spoke to journalists in tears, said the deceased is the first child of a family of five. She lamented that the victim defied all counsel and went to the PVC registration centre against her mother’s advise, because of the 2018/2019 admission she secured at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria to read pharmacy.

RUSSIAN PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN SOFTENS PENSION REFORMS AFTER OUTCRY
Russian leader Vladimir Putin has softened planned pension changes following angry protests and a slump in his approval rating.

He said the retirement age for women would be increased from 55 to 60 instead of to 63. But a five-year increase for men, to 65, would stay.

In a rare TV address, Mr Putin said the country’s working-age population was shrinking, making change essential.

Unions have warned that many will not live long enough to claim a pension.

Over the weekend, the Lagos state police command arrested 57 suspected homosexuals who were allegedly being initiated into the act of homosexuality.

A voice recording of Leah Sharibu, the sole Dapchi school girl still in Boko Haram captivity is currently the centre of heated debate by Nigerians on social media platform, Twitter.

It will be recalled that Leah and her 118 other colleagues were in February abducted from their school, Government Girls Secondary School Dapchi, Yobe State by armed men later disclosed to be a faction of the terrorist group, Boko Haram. After negotiations with the Nigerian government, 106 of the abducted girls were returned in March but Leah was left behind, because, according to reports, she refused to denounce Christianity and convert to the Boko Haram-influenced islam.

TRUMP REFERRED TO BUHARI AS LIFELESS, FINANCIAL TIMES CLAIMS
The United States president Donald Trump referred to his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu Buhari as “lifeless” shortly after a meeting between the two leaders on April 30, Financial Times said on Monday.

Buhari, the first sub-Saharan Africa president to meet Trump since he was sworn in January 2017 as the 45th American president, was in the US for bilateral talks on Trump’s invitation.

That meeting ended with Trump saying he never wanted to meet someone as lifeless as Buhari again, Financial Times reported citing three persons familiar with the matter.

MINISTER OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY ONU WOOS NIGERIAN INVESTORS IN US
The Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu, will on Monday begin a tour of the United States where he is expected to meet and discuss with Nigerians in the Diaspora and advance a case for returning home and exploring opportunities in the country.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by the Head, Press and Public Relations Unit, AbdulGaniyu Aminu, the ministry said that Onu would also travel to Cuba to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on science and technology.

Celebrated US playwright Neil Simon has died aged 91 in his native New York City of complications from pneumonia, representatives announced.

Simon gained international fame in the 1960s for stage and screen comedies including The Odd Couple and Barefoot in The Park.

In 1991 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama with Lost in Yonkers.

BEETA PLAYWRITING COMPETITION CALLS FOR ENTRIES
The Beeta Universal Arts Foundation, in partnership with Union Bank, has announced the second edition of the Beeta Playwriting Competition, aimed at discovering new talents in the art of playwriting.

The competition is also aimed at preserving the Nigerian culture, history and heritage through raising new playwrights adept at conceptualizing new drama that captures all the aspects of the country’s life, from the grand to the absurd.

The entry for the competition will end on August 31, 2018.

According to organizers of the event, this will be followed by the announcement of 10 finalists who are expected to participate in a writing workshop adding that the winner of the competition will be announced at the grand finale.

DELSU STUDENTS FLAY ASUU’S REJECTION OF STAFF DUTY REGISTER
Students of Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, have criticised the institution’s branch of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for rejecting the staff duty register recently introduced by the school management.

The critics, who are mainly students’ union leaders, expressed their views in interviews with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday. They alleged that the union’s opposition to the policy, which has been suspended, was based on selfish interests.

Tagged “Time and Attendance Device”, the policy was announced through a July 31 memo signed by the Deputy Registrar of DELSU, Mr. Emmanuel Egheneji.

The Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi has berated popular musician and owner of Fresh FM, Yinka Ayefele, for flouting the laws in the construction of his Music House, which was demolished by the government on Sunday.

Ajimobi said this in an interview he granted the Yoruba Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation.

In the interview, over which he had been castigated, Ajimobi said the excuses people are making for Ayefele will not stand in the face of the law.

NBC CONDEMNS DEMOLITION OF YINKA AYEFELE’S FRESH FM
The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has condemned the demolition of the structure housing the Fresh FM in Ibadan by the Oyo State Government.

The Director-General of NBC, Ishaq Midibbo-Kawu, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin, said the demolition was a worrisome development and did not speak well of the state government.

The structure, “Music House, ” reportedly valued at N800 million and which had been in operation for 10 years, was demolished in the early hours of Sunday.

Chelsea star, Eden Hazard, has said he will not leave the club this summer because they won’t be able to sign a replacement.
Hazard hinted that his time at Chelsea could be coming to an end after the World Cup when he said he wanted to “discover something different,” amid rumours of a move to Real Madrid. But the 27-year-old has now pledged commitment to Chelsea for the foreseeable future.

Nigeria has slipped down one spot in the latest FIFA rankings from number forty-eight to forty-nine after failing to qualify for the second stage of the World Cup in Russia.

CURRENCY SWAP DEAL WILL PREVENT SUBSTANDARD PRODUCTS IMPORTATION — CBN
The Central Bank of Nigeria on Wednesday said it was not possible for an importer to bring in substandard products into the country under the currency swap agreement recently signed with the People’s Bank of China.

The apex bank said adequate measures had been put in place with all the regulatory agencies to check abuse of the terms of the contract reached under the currency swap deal.

The CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, said these in Abuja at a currency swap forum for importers in the North Central zone.

NIGERIA BORROWS N410BN FOR CAPITAL PROJECTS IN 2018 BUDGET – DMO
The federal government sourced about N410 billion funding from the domestic financial market to finance the 2018 capital budget, the Debt Management Office (DMO) said on Tuesday.

About $3 billion was raised through Eurobond to refinance maturing domestic debts as part of the debt management strategy to replace high-cost domestic debt with lower external debt.

The Director General of the debt management agency, Patience Oniha, disclosed this in Abuja while presenting the update on the country’s public debt as at June 30, 2018.

CENTRAL BANK OF GHANA TO PROSECUTE EXECUTIVES OF FAILED BANKS
Ghana’s central bank plans to prosecute executives of failed local lenders suspected of dissipating depositors’ funds and insider dealing, the regulator said on Tuesday.

Deputy central bank governor, Elsie Awadzi, told Reuters in Accra that the central bank was also considering barring culpable directors from operating in the Ghanaian financial sector.

“We are working very hard on submitting a dossier on each of these banks to the law enforcement agencies … to further investigate criminal behaviour or what could potentially be criminal behaviour and to prosecute,” Mrs Awadzi said in an interview in Accra, without naming any of the individuals under investigation.

FACEBOOK TO BROADCAST LA LIGA MATCHES FOR FREE
Lionel Messi, Gareth Bale and a host of La Liga stars will be beamed for free to viewers in the Indian subcontinent as part of a landmark deal with Facebook to broadcast live matches, the Spanish top flight division said Tuesday.

All 380 football matches of the new 2018-2019 La Liga season, which begins Friday, will be available to watch on the social media network in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, La Liga said in a statement.

NASS RECONVENING: APC ACCUSES SARAKI OF COMMITTING TREASON
The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday said the failure of the leadership of the National Assembly to reconvene plenary today, as had been widely expected, amounts to “high treason”.

Responding to the official confirmation by the National Assembly that it would not reconvene anytime soon, APC said: “Clearly, Saraki’s actions as Senate President now border on high treason.”

Had the National Assembly reconvened, it would have considered the request of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for funds to organize the 2019 elections.

SARAKI TO OSINBAJO: INSTITUTE NEUTRAL PANEL TO INVESTIGATE NASS SIEGE
Senate President Bukola Saraki has implored the acting President, Yemi Osinbajo to immediately institute an independent judicial panel of inquiry to look into the siege on the National Assembly by men of the Department of Security Service (DSS) last week.

Saraki made this call in a tweet from his official Twitter account, @bukolasaraki.

It would be recalled that masked security operatives identified as operatives from the DSS laid a siege on the national assembly complex, barring staff and lawmakers from going into the legislative chambers.

AIR PEACE PLANS MINI-HUBS IN KADUNA, OTHERS
A domestic airline, Air Peace, has said it is considering opening mini-hubs for its operations in Kaduna, Kano and a few other cities to help decongest the Lagos airport.

The airline’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace, Mr Allen Onyema, who stated this during an inaugural flight to Kaduna on Monday, said the carrier was embarking on massive expansion of its domestic flight operations to tackle air travel difficulties in the country and build bridges of unity across regions.

“The unity of Nigeria cannot be through politics alone, it can come through business and we are opening up routes to make this happen. Lagos is also getting congested and we are looking at mini-hubs such as Kaduna and Kano where flights can originate,” Onyema, who was represented by the Corporate Communications Manager, Air Peace, Mr Chris Iwarah, said.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, have explained why the National Assembly cannot reconvene yet pointing out that it would be highly irresponsible to do so.

The two chambers of the National Assembly had been expected to reconvene today and tomorrow to consider the budget request of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the 2019 elections forwarded by President Muhammadu Buhari on July 17, 2018 but a statement signed on Tuesday by Yusuph Olaniyonu, Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) to the Senate President, and Turaki Hassan, Special Adviser (Media and Public Affairs) to the Speaker, House of Representatives, said the National Assembly could not fix a date for reconvening yet, because it had “no report to consider”.

EX-WHITE HOUSE AIDE, OMAROSA RELEASES TAPES OF HER FIRING BY CHIEF OF STAFF, JOHN KELLY
Former White House staffer, Omarosa Manigault Newman who was fired by the Trump administration in 2017, on Sunday released a secret tape of John Kelly, the chief of staff firing her.

AFP reports that Omarosa, who has gone on to write a bombshell memoir of her time serving under President Donald Trump, said she decided to release the secret recording of John Kelly in the Situation Room and recorded conversations with Trump because “this is a White House where everybody lies.”

The White House Situation Room is supposed to be a top-security room and electronic devices are banned there, but it was not immediately clear whether Omarosa would face legal ramifications for releasing the recording.

NIGERIAN BANKS WILL COLLAPSE IF POWER FIRMS FAIL – DISCOS
Most Nigerian banks will collapse if power generation and distribution companies fail, electricity distributors have warned.

They also stated that despite the problems in Nigeria’s power sector, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, had not met with investors in the distribution arm of the industry since 2015.

Speaking during a live television programme on Saturday, which was monitored by our correspondent in Abuja, the Executive Director, Research and Advocacy, Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors, Sunday Oduntan, said the power sector was not working despite being privatised.

POLITICAL TURBULENCE TRIGGERS MORE EQUITY SLUMP IN NIGERIA
Turbulence in the political arena has sparked massive dumping and induced sell pressure on the equity sector of the Nigerian Stock Exchange as stock market investors lost N257 billion or 2.2 per cent at the close of transactions on Friday.

Analysts perceive there would be continued selloffs in the absence of any near-term positive trigger. They noted that the tense political environment would keep dampening investors’ confidence and aggravate more sell pressure.

The market capitalisation of listed equities tumbled significantly to close at N12,941 trillion from Thursday’s N13,228 trillion. The All Share Index (ASI) suffered the same fate, losing 786.19 points from 36,232.47 to 35.446.47.

LAGOS LIGHT RAIL TO BEGIN OPERATION IN 2022
The Lagos State Government has announced that its light rail project running between Mile 2 and Marina will commence passenger operation in 2022.

The mass transit rail project called the Blue Line awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation had suffered many delays due to the paucity of funds and other challenges.

But the state government said on Sunday that after a comprehensive review of the project, it had approved a roadmap proposed by its consultants to complete the civil infrastructure as well as the operation and maintenance infrastructure needed for the commencement of passenger operation in 2022.

ONITILO DEBORAH EMERGE OVERALL WINNER OF MIKE OKONKWO NATIONAL ESSAY COMPETITION
Miss Onitilo Deborah of New Chrisfield College, Ikorodu, Lagos State has won the 2018 Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for secondary school students in Nigeria.

She emerged the overall best having scored 63% and 52% in the first and second round of the competition respectively.

Miss Ashley Davidson of Vivian Flower Memorial College for Girls who scored 62% and 49% in the first and second rounds, emerges as the second.

Master Ferdinand Esigbone Omagbemi, a student to Roshallom International Secondary School, Lagos came third after scoring 60% and 47% in the first and second round respectively, while the other winner is Miss Fagbemi Semilore Ireoluwa of Roshallom International School, Lagos.

COVENTRY UNIVERSITY TO OPEN CAMPUS IN POLAND
Coventry University is to open a campus in Wrocław, Poland, its first international campus, with courses due to begin in September 2019.

The university said it seeks to meet demand for flexible learning – whereby students can study whilst working part-time, helping them to fund their studies.

“There’s a real appetite for the kind of education that we’re able to offer through our flexible learning model, whereby students can study while they work and upskill themselves without necessarily having to commit to a full-time degree,” Coventry University vice-chancellor John Latham said.

NASARAWA STATE POLYTECHNIC PROTEST NON-ACCREDITATION OF COURSES, EXTORTION
Students of Nasarawa State Polytechnic, Lafia, on Wednesday took to the streets to protest the non-accreditation of courses offered in the institution.

The students, who blocked a section of the Akwanga-Lafia highway, also accused the school management of “massive extortion”.

According to reports, students carried placards with various inscriptions some of which read “accredit our courses, we are tired of stories,” and “our certificates are not recognised,” among others.

LAUTECH BEGINS TWO WEEKS WARNING STRIKE OVER POOR FUNDING
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) has commenced a two-week warning strike over poor funding off the university by the owner states.

This was contained in a statement jointly signed by the union chairman and secretary, Biodun Olaniran and Toyin Abegunrin.

According to the statement, the strike was given more opportunity to the owner states to prevent the total shutdown of the institution.

TEN FEARED DEAD IN EDO BANK ROBBERY
No fewer than 10 persons were killed following a robbery attack at two banks in Igarra, Akoko Edo Local Government Area of Edo, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The incident occurred at about 5 p.m. when the robbers invaded the community in an attempt to rob the two commercial banks in the town killing 10 persons including security officers attached to the banks.

A resident of the community, Mr Ofei Obende, said the robbers attacked the police station in the town before attacking the banks killing four security men at the bank premises.

INDIAN MEN TO CLEAN RAIL STATION AS PUNISHMENT FOR #INMYFEELINGS CHALLENGE
Three Indian men have been sentenced by a magistrate court to clean a railway station for three days as punishment for performing the #InMyFeelings challenge on a train.

The three men posted a video (which has since been brought down) of themselves participating in the internet sensation #InMyFeelings challenge inspired by US rapper, Drake’s song of the same name. The challenge started by internet comedian Shiggy involves people jumping out of moving cars and dancing to the hit single. The Indian men were portraying how people in different Indian states would perform the #InMyFeelings.

NBC FINES RADIO STATION FOR AIRING FALZ, OLAMIDE, WANDE COAL SONGS
The National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has banned Nigerian Musician, Falz’ song, ‘This is Nigeria.’

This was disclosed in a letter from the NBC dated 6th August 2018 and signed by its Zonal Director, Igomu Onoja and addressed to JODAJ Global Communications Ltd, they stated that the media station pay the fine of N100,000 according to section 14.1.4.1a.

According to NBC, a part of the song – “This is Nigeria; look how we living now everybody be criminal” has been tagged “vulgar” and the song is now declared “unfit for radio”.

SENATOR ADELEKE PRESENTED FORGED SCHOOL TESTIMONIAL TO INEC, PLAINTIFFS TELL COURT
The plaintiffs in the suit filed against the eligibility of Senator Ademola Adeleke as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Osun State on Monday told Justice David Oladimeji that the testimonial and statement of result submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission and the court by the defendants are forged documents.

The plaintiffs, Rasheed Olabayo and Oluwasegun Idowu, had informed the court of the possibility of an out-of-court settlement of the case at the last sitting of the court but an agreement on this could not be reached as the court continued with the hearing of the case.

The counsel for the plaintiffs, Mr Olufemi Ayandokun, had in his response to the notice of preliminary objection filed by the defendants told the court that his clients had filed a nine-paragraph affidavit dated August 3, 2018, and attached two exhibits marked G.E 1 and G.E 2.

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 32-year-old man, Julius Oliseh, for allegedly stabbing to death 23-year-old Isikilu Shittu at a burial at Mowe, in the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state.

The incident was said to have occurred on Sunday, August 5, 2018, around 2 pm in Ogunru village.

It was gathered that an argument had ensued between Oliseh and Isikilu, and the suspect reportedly broke a bottle and stabbed Isikilu in the neck, which led to his death.

91 DEAD, HUNDREDS INJURED BY EARTHQUAKE ON INDONESIAN ISLAND POPULAR WITH TOURISTS
At least 91 people are dead and hundreds more injured as a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked Indonesia’s popular island of Lombok on Sunday, according to Indonesian authorities and the U.S. Geological Survey.

The island is popular with tourists and now about 1,000 foreign visitors have been evacuated to nearby islands.

The powerful quake struck at a relatively shallow depth of 10.5 kilometers off the north coast of Lombok, a little over a mile from Loloan village, on Sunday night local time, the USGS said. It was the second deadly quake to hit the island in a week.

NINE CORPS MEMBERS DROWN IN TARABA DURING PICNIC
Nine Corps members currently serving in Taraba State have drowned in the river Mayo-Selbe, in the Gashaka Local Government Area of the state.



It was learnt that the deceased drowned while swimming during a picnic to the river.

The state Police Public Relation Officer, ASP David Missal confirmed the death of the nine corps members, stating that seven bodies have been recovered from the incident so far.

MAN ARRESTED IN GERMANY FOR BABY FOOD POISONING, EXTORTION
A 54-year-old man will go on trial in Germany after allegedly putting poisoned baby food on the shelves of a supermarket and threatening to put more poisoned items into circulation, a court said on Monday.



Prosecutors said the defendant placed five jars of baby food that had been contaminated with ethylene glycol in a supermarket in the southern German city of Friedrichshafen.

The prosecutors said that the defendant demanded a sum of 11.75 million euros (13.6 million dollars) from the supermarket, or that he would place 20 other poisoned items on its shelves if they refused.

The National Council on Education (NCE) has approved the separated Christian Religious Studies, Islamic Studies and National Values in the school curriculum for implementation in Primary and Junior Secondary Schools nationwide.

Professor Ifeoma Isiugo Abanihe, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer, National Business and Technical Examinations (NABTEB) has said that Bayelsa, Borno, and Edo states were the only states where the board did not document any occurrence of exam malpractice in the just concluded May/June 2018 NBC/NTC examinations.

Buhari Intervenes on Solution for FAAC Revenue Sharing Controversy
The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC) are to agree on a revised template for remittance of revenue to the Federation Account.

The Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, said on Friday in Abuja that the current template by the NNPC has been a source of conflict between the national oil company and other FAAC members over revenues proposed every month for sharing.

Mrs Adeosun who was addressing reporters at the end of the FAAC meeting for June said President Muhammadu Buhari has directed a new template to replace the current one by NNPC which she said has not been presenting revenue in the most transparent and user-friendly manner.

EZEKWESILI, OTHERS ADVISE FG ON EXCESS CRUDE ACCOUNT

Pension Fund Assets Hit N8.14 trillion — PenCom
The National Pension Commission (PenCom) said that the total pension fund assets stood at N8.14 trillion as at May 2018.

PenCom in a statement signed by its spokesman, Peter Aghahowa, on Sunday said the assets rose from N7.52 trillion in December 2017, to N8.14 trillion in May 2018.

The commission said, ”the pension assets as at December 2017 stood at N7.52tn, it moved up to N7.8 trillion as at February and soared to N7.94 trillion in March, then to N8.14 trillion in May.”

It also posited that N5.2 trillion has been invested in Federal Government Securities by the Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs).

Ozil watched Arsenal’s penalty defeat to Atletico Madrid in the International Champions Cup from the bench on Thursday, but received the biggest cheer of the night when his image was flashed up on the big screen.

KIDNAP SAGA: MELAYE RETURNS, SAYS HE SPENT 11 HOURS IN THE WILDERNESS
Dino Melaye, the senator representing Kogi east, says he has regained his freedom after spending 11 hours in the “wilderness”.

Melaye’s brother had raised an alarm on Thursday that the senator had been kidnapped.

Ben Murray-Bruce, a senator from Bayelsa, had quoted him (the brother) as saying Melaye was bundled into a Toyota Sienna while he was travelling to Kogi for his court appearance.

BREAKING: IMO LOCAL GOVERNMENT APC CHAIRMAN ASSASSINATED
The chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ideato North Local Government of Imo state, Sunny Ejiagwu, has been murdered by suspected assassins in the early hours of today, Friday, July 27th.

Confirming the incident, the state commissioner of police, Dasuki Galandanchi, said Ejiagwu was murdered along the Akokwa road in Ideato North local government area and his body has been deposited at a nearby mortuary.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Lagos Zonal Office, on Thursday, July 26, 2018, arraigned John Warimeme Abebe who is Obasanjo’s in-law and father of Soundcity VJ, Moet Abebe, before Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos on a four-count charge bordering on forgery, fabricating evidence, using fabricated evidence and attempt to pervert the course of justice.

One of the count reads: “That you, Dr. John Warimeme Abebe, on or about the 22nd day of June, 2010 in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, knowingly forged BP Exploration Nigeria Limited’s letter dated 30th November, 1995 to Inducon (Nigeria) Limited by inserting in page 2 of the said letter the following words: “Also note that the ‘Buy-Out Option’ only applies to the pre-production stage of the NPIA. The $4m buy-out is thus irrelevant from production of oil in any of our fields” and purported same to have been issued by BP Exploration Nigeria Limited and committed an offence contrary to Section 467 of the Criminal Code Cap C17, Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2003.”

IMRAN KHAN CLAIMS VICTORY IN PAKISTAN ELECTIONS
Pakistan cricket legend turned opposition stalwart Imran Khan claimed victory Thursday in the country’s tense elections, following accusations of poll rigging by rival parties.

“We were successful and we were given a mandate,” Khan said during a live broadcast, adding there was “no politician victimisation” in the contest.

WHITE HOUSE UNDER FIRE FOR BARRING CNN REPORTER FROM EVENT
The White House was under fire Wednesday for barring a CNN reporter from attending an event with the president, allegedly for having asked questions that officials objected to.

Reporter Kaitlan Collins was quoted by CNN as saying that White House communications officials told her she could not attend an event with US President Donald Trump and European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker because she had asked “inappropriate” questions earlier in the day.

“We strongly condemn the White House’s misguided and inappropriate decision today to bar one of our members from an open press event after she asked questions they did not like,” the White House Correspondents’ Association said in a statement.

LAUTECH EXPELS SON OF EX-OSUN SSG, 3 OTHERS OVER CAMPUS VIOLENCE
he Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomosho has expelled Abdulazeez Adeoti the son of the immediate past Secretary to Osun State Governor, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti.

Adeoti was expelled alongside three other students while it placed eight other students on suspension following their involvement in the post-students’ union election violence on June 13.

This was contained in an official statement signed by Registrar of the institution, Mr. Jacob Agboola and sent to the students’ email on Wednesday at an emergency meeting held on Tuesday.

OVER 90 PERCENT OF OUR PROGRAMMES FULLY ACCREDITED BY NUC – AKSU VC
Over 90 per cent of programmes of the Akwa Ibom University (AKSU) received full accreditation from the National University Commission (NUC), the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Eno Ibanga made this known on Wednesday.

According to him, courses on religious studies, mass communication, history and international relations received interim accreditation from the NUC, stating that the accreditation team from the NUC will visit the institution to complete the accreditation of the remaining programmes.

Ibanga said; “All faculties except three programmes have full accreditation and the management only admits students within its capacity. The University at present has 7,300 students.

ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF LADOKE AKINTOLA UNIVERSITY THREATENS TO RESUME STRIKE
Workers of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) under the umbrella of Academic Staff Union (ASUU) have threatened to resume its strike action if the Oyo state government and its Osun State counterpart refuse to fulfil its agreement with the union.

The union made this known in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Biodun Olaniran and the Secretary Toyin Abegunrin on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the unions expressed their dismay at the disloyalty of the governments.

The 1987 set of the department of Mass Communication alumni at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has donated a set of interactive boards to the department.

The coordinator of the 87 set, Alh. Tajudeen Adeyemi described the event as a privilege to give back to the department.

He said, “The idea of this initiative came about at our second reunion. DEMI LOVATO EPISODE OF BEAT SHAZAM REPLACED BY FOX AFTER HOSPITALISATION NEWS
Fox has opted to not air the episode of Beat Shazam that features Demi Lovato after the singer was hospitalized on Tuesday for an overdose.

“Tonight’s (Tuesday’s) previously scheduled episode of Beat Shazam featured a guest appearance by Demi Lovato. In light of recent reports, we have decided to replace the episode of Beat Shazam with another all-new episode,” a statement from Fox read. “Our thoughts go out to Demi and her family.”

Lovato’s appearance was pre-taped months ago. The singer was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday for an apparent overdose but is now “stable and alert and breathing” according to NBC News.

Saxophonist Femi Kuti has debunked the claims that he attacked Charly Boy on social media as a gay rights activist after his daughter Dewy Oputa came out as a lesbian.

SOUTH AFRICA’S WITS UNIVERSITY DROPS GENDER PREFIX TITLES
The University of the Witwatersrand, also known as Wits University, has dropped gender prefixes in communication with students in a bid to create a more inclusive environment for students of the LGBTQI community.

This was made known by the programme coordinator of sexual orientation and gender identity advocacy Wits, Tish Lumos on a radio show.

According to her, “We’re removing all titles from individuals and students body and if you want to specify your title you can go on our self-service website and pick a title that works for you.”

UNIZIK STUDENTS PROTEST COLLEAGUE’S DEATH

UNIABUJA SET TO HOLD 1ST UNIVERSITIES KARATE CHAMPIONSHIP
The University of Abuja is set to host the maiden edition of All Nigerian Universities Karate Championship.

NIGERIAN COACH SALISU YUSUF CAUGHT ON CAMERA TAKING BRIBE
The coach of the Nigerian national Salisu Yusuf team has been caught on camera collecting bribe from undercover journalists who pretended to be football agents.

The bribe was offered and was collected after a discussion on player selection, BBC said.

The footage, shot by BBC’s Ghanaian reporter Anas Aremeyaw Anas in September 2017, showed Yusuf collecting a wad of money, reportedly, $1000 cash.

NINE BANKS EARNED N25.9BN FROM ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS IN Q1
Nine Nigerian banks made about N25.9bn in the first three months of the year from electronic transactions, the first quarter unaudited annual reports of the banks showed.

This is an increase of N6.22bn over the N19.7bn that the nine banks made from electronic business in the same period of the previous year.

The amount was earned from fees and commission that the banks charged their customers when they carried out transactions through Automated Teller Machines, Internet banking, and Point of Sale machines.

KADUNA, PORT HARCOURT REFINERIES DORMANT – NNPC
The latest operational performance of the nation’s refineries as released by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) shows that two of the plants in Kaduna and Port Harcourt have been dormant.

According to the NNPC, while the two refineries cannot refine any crude oil, the one in Warri is performing better, as its capacity utilisation has appreciated considerably.

The refineries are the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company, Port Harcourt Refining Company and Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company.

OIL PRICES FALL AMID DEMAND CONCERNS
Oil prices fell on Monday amid increasing concerns about fuel demand after finance ministers and central bank governors from the G20 warned that global economic growth risks have increased amid rising trade and geopolitical tensions.

Brent crude LCOc1 dropped nine cents, or 0.1 per cent, to 72.98 dollars a barrel by 6.47 GMT.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures CLc1 declined 13 cents, or 0.2 per cent, to 68.13 dollars a barrel.

The Minister of Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah on Friday identified lack of requisite information and pessimism as core reasons why most medium and small-scale enterprises (MSMEs) and entrepreneurs in Nigeria do not access government financing to grow their businesses.

LAGOS STATE PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS UNABLE TO ACCESS WASSCE RESULT
Students of Lagos State public schools are yet to access their results, two weeks after the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) released results of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

According to a source from the Lagos State Ministry of Education who pleaded anonymity, the non-release of the result may not be unconnected to the non-completion of the payment of the examination fees by the Lagos State government.

The Lagos State government pays the WASSCE fees for SS3 pupils of its schools.

COMMUTERS STRANDED ON APAPA-OSHODI EXPRESSWAY AS TANKERS TAKE OVER
It was swear words and gnashing of teeth for the stranded motorists that endured gruelling hours since Tuesday on the busy Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, as articulated vehicles cordoned off a section of the road from Cele bus-stop to Mile 2 inward the seaport, turning it to a parking lot.

The chaotic gridlock was worsened by the impatient commercial bus drivers, who in a long convoy plied the other lane and drove against traffic. Before now, articulated vehicles often park on both lanes of the highway from the port to Mile 2 and at most Second Rainbow bus-stop. But last week, they extended their menace to Ijesha bus-stop, and by Monday, further extended their illegal parking to Cele bus-stop.

OYO POLY WORKERS COMMENCE INDEFINITE STRIKE
The academic and non-academic staff union of Ibarapa Polytechnic in Eruwa, Oyo State, began an indefinite strike to protest over non-payment their salaries and other entitlements by the state government.

The workers, under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), said they decided to take the action to call the attention of all concerned stakeholders to their plight.

FIRE GUTS BANK OFFICE IN LAGOS, ABIA NIGHT CLUB
Some property of the United Bank for Africa has been burnt as fire gutted the firm’s office on Victoria Island, Lagos, on Wednesday.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the fire which started around 11.53am was ignited as diesel was being poured into some generators serving the office.

It was gathered that three generators, one Toyota car and diesel tank were burnt in the outbreak.

OSINBAJO INAUGURATES N107BN BUA’S SOKOTO CEMENT PLANT
Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday in Sokoto State inaugurated the BUA cement and coal power plants built at the cost of $350m (N107bn).

The cement plant situated in Kalambina, Sokoto State, has an installed capacity of 1.5 million metric tonnes per annum, while the coal power plant is a 32-megawatts multi-fuel captive plant capable of generating more power than what the entire Sokoto State is currently generating, according to the Chairman, BUA Group, Abdulsamad Rabiu.

ICAN PRESIDENT CALLS ON FG TO GET RID OF IDLE ASSETS
The Nigerian Institute Of Chartered Accountants (ICAN) has called on the Federal Government to get rid of idle assets across the country in order to bridge the government’s fund and accelerate the nation’s growth.

Mr. Razak Jaiyeola, the ICAN president made this call during an interview with the newsmen in Lagos on Tuesday, July 17, 2018.

According to him, some of the assets lying unused, especially in Lagos are irritating.

ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES IN TALKS WITH FG OVER NATIONAL CARRIER
Africa’s biggest airline, Ethiopian Airlines Enterprise has said it’s in discussions with the Nigerian government for a new national carrier.

The Chief Executive Officer, Ethiopian Airlines Enterprise, Tewolde GebreMariam, was scheduled to hold talks with the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, about the proposal on Tuesday at the Farnborough air show in England, Bloomberg reported.

The Federal Government had said earlier this month that a new airline would begin operations this year, with the name to be revealed at the expo.

EXXONMOBIL LAGOS HEADQUARTERS SHUT BY PROTESTING WORKERS
The Lagos headquarters of ExxonMobil has been shut down by the company’s workers’ unions over the alleged dismissal of 860 security personnel without entitlement.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workers besieged the office of the oil company, protesting the sacking of workers, mainly Nigerians, on Tuesday in Lagos.

The protesters accused the company of sacking the workers most of whom had worked with the company for over 22 years without regards for the rule of law.

NEW KALAMBAINA CEMENT FACTORY TO PROVIDE 12,000 JOBS — BUA CEO, RABIU
The BUA Group chairman, Abdulsamad Rabiu has said the recently commissioned 1.5 million metric tonnes per-annum Kalambaina cement factory is a statement in innovation.

Rabiu further said the $350 million factory that was commissioned on Tuesday by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will provide 12,000 job opportunities, generate 32 megawatts of electricity and boost local cement production.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Rabiu said the plant has a number of competitive advantages, including “huge limestone deposits” in the Kalambaina area.

AHMED MUSA LINKED WITH £40M MOVE TO SAUDI ARABIA’S AL NASSR
Ahmed Musa has been linked with a move away from English Premier League side, Leicester City for a staggering £40m fee, Leicestershire Live reports.

The Nigeria striker was an impressive performer at the World Cup, but he appears to have little future at the King Power Stadium having spent the second half of last season on loan at CSKA Moscow.

Multiple international outlets are now saying Musa will move to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr for a fee which would represent fantastic business for the Foxes.

ADIL RAMI PRAISES DIVERSITY IN FRANCE PLAYERS’ ORIGINS AFTER WORLD CUP WIN
France defender Adil Rami embraced the “diversity” in his team after Les Bleus beat Croatia 4-2 in World Cup final in Moscow.

Fifteen members of France’s 23-man squad are of African descent, a fact that divided some pundits in the country before and throughout the tournament, but Rami said their heritage was an asset.

“Me, I’m French of Moroccan origin and I’m proud of it, proud to show that I’m not a thug, proud to make my country joyous like that,” Rami said. “I love France. I am also happy for everyone. This country deserves that.

TOTTENHAM’S HARRY KANE TARGETS QUICK RETURN TO PREMIER LEAGUE
England captain Harry Kane is confident he can recover from the fatigue of a taxing World Cup campaign as he aims to return to action in Tottenham Hotspur’s opening Premier League fixture against Newcastle United on Aug. 11.

After 48 appearances across all competitions for Tottenham last term, the 24-year-old forward continued his prolific form at the World Cup, scoring six goals in as many matches to lead England to the semifinals and win the Golden Boot award.

Kane returned home with the rest of his England teammates on Sunday and has less than a month of downtime but is already focused on a return with Spurs.

Paul Pogba has revealed what he said to his France team-mates prior to the World Cup final with a motivational rally before the biggest game of their careers.

With the expectations of a nation resting on their shoulders, they may not have needed any extra motivation for the final with Croatia – but it didn’t stop Pogba stepping up and trying to provide it.

STURRIDGE COULD STILL HAVE A FUTURE AT LIVERPOOL, SAYS KLOPP
Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge could still have a future at the Premier League club despite his struggles with injuries and consistency in recent seasons, manager Juergen Klopp has said.

Sturridge has been hindered by several long-term injuries over the last few campaigns, with the England international passing the 10-goal mark only once over the last four seasons, scoring 13 in the 2015-16 season.

The 28-year-old was loaned out to West Bromwich Albion last January but failed to make an impact at the Hawthorns outfit, failing to score in six appearances for the relegated club.
