Politics2019: Atiku Vs. Buhari by Newsbreakers(op): 4:48pm On Oct 10, 2018
2019: ATIKU VS. BUHARI
REUBEN ABATI
There has been some clarity about Nigeria’s 2019 Presidential election, with the end of the October 7 deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the conduct of party primaries at all levels. On Saturday, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at its convention held in Abuja, ratified the choice of incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari as its flagbearer, with a curious vote tally of 14. 8 million. President Buhari and his supporters have continuously left no one in doubt that they intend to have a second shot at power and office. The number of party members across Nigeria who endorsed the Buhari candidacy has however raised eyebrows. 14. 8 million! In the 2015 elections, that was a little less than the same number of total votes that the incumbent got in a nationwide general vote. What is the actual number of persons on the party’s membership register – 15.6 million? Concerned observers have argued that this is an indication of the determination of the ruling party to rig the 2019 Presidential elections, in favour of a 75-year old candidate to whom they insist, there is no alternative. The No-Alternative talk is, of course, the height of sycophancy and the extent of its idiocy has now been exposed.

INTERNET CONNECTIVITY SEEN AS HAVING POSITIVE IMPACT ON LIFE IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
Most sub-Saharan Africans feel positively about the role the internet plays in their countries, a new Pew Research Center report finds, but long-standing digital divides between internet haves and have-nots persist in the region.

Sub-Saharan Africa has experienced dramatic gains in internet use in recent years. With this rapid growth in connectivity have come a host of potential problems, including fake news, political targeting and manipulation and financial scams, among others. Still, large majorities say the increasing use of the internet has had a good influence on education in their country, and half or more say the same about the economy, personal relationships and politics.

Only when it comes to the issue of morality are sub-Saharan Africans somewhat more divided about the role the internet is playing. Across the six major nations surveyed in the region, a median of 45% say the internet has had a positive impact on morality, while 39% say it is has been negative.v

BITE HIS HAND OFF, BREXITEERS SEIZE ON DONALD TUSK’S INTERVENTION
Donald Tusk has given fresh impetus to Conservative MPs who want Theresa May to ditch her Brexit plan, a little more than 24 hours after the prime minister again called for “respect” from Brussels.

The European Council president also strongly criticised Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, branding his recent comparison of the EU to the Soviet Union “unwise as it is insulting”, noting he had “spent half his life in the Soviet bloc”.

And he suggested the Conservative Party conference, which was dominated by tensions over Brexit, had served to delay the progress of the exit talks.

BusinessWorld Bank Forecasts 2.7% Growth For Sub-saharan Africa In 2018 by Newsbreakers(op): 5:52pm On Oct 04, 2018
WORLD BANK FORECASTS 2.7% GROWTH FOR SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA IN 2018
The World Bank has cut its forecast for growth of sub-Saharan Africa in 2018 to 2.7 per cent, down from an earlier one of 3.1 per cent, partly due to less favourable external environment for the region.

The lender said in its October 2018 issue of Africa’s Pulse, the bi-annual analysis of the state of African economies, that its 2018 projection represents a slight increase from 2.3 per cent in 2017.

“The slower pace of the recovery in sub-Saharan Africa (0.4 percentage points lower than the April forecast) is explained by the sluggish expansion in the region’s three largest economies, Nigeria, Angola, and South Africa,” said the World Bank.

CANADA RELIEVED TRADE DEAL DONE, WILL NOT FORGET TRUMP ATTACKS
U.S. President Donald Trump vowed to make Canada pay after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he wouldn’t be bullied in trade talks. Trump called Trudeau “weak” and “dishonest.” He threatened tariffs on cars and slapped them on steel.

The unprecedented attacks on America’s closest ally left a bitter taste. But Canadians mostly feel relieved after reaching a new trade agreement with Trump. Many said it could have been a lot worse. Canada avoided auto tariffs and maintained access to the all-important American market.

The U.S. made few, if any concessions, while Canada provided more access to its dairy sector and allowed Washington to possibly prevent Canada from reaching a free trade deal with China. Canada also was not able to remove steel and aluminum tariffs.

PEW RESEARCH: TRUMP’S INTERNATIONAL RATINGS REMAIN LOW, ESPECIALLY AMONG KEY ALLIES
As the second anniversary of U.S. President Donald Trump’s election approaches, a new 25-nation Pew Research Center survey finds that Trump’s international image remains poor, while ratings for the United States are much lower than during Barack Obama’s presidency.

The Center’s new poll also finds that international publics express significant concerns about America’s role in world affairs. Large majorities say the U.S. doesn’t consider the interests of countries like theirs when making foreign policy decisions. Many believe the U.S. is doing less to help solve major global challenges than it once did. And there are signs that American soft power is waning as well: While the U.S. maintains its reputation for respecting individual liberty, fewer believe this than a decade ago.

MUST WE DIMINISH OKONJO-IWEALA’S ACHIEVEMENTS TO PRAISE KEMI ADEOSUN?
Every leader worth their salt endeavours to put in place the perfect succession plan; one where your efforts, hard work, and achievements are not pulled down by your successor, but built on, improved, and completed. In good governance, continuity is always the name of the game. Not so here. Even when the project is a laudable one that has impacted the lives of many, we still find administrations outrightly declaring they would not continue the programme at the detriment of its erstwhile beneficiaries. Projects die from neglect, and people suffer.

A good example would be to note that in Nigeria, we have as many girl-child and women empowerment schemes as we have had first ladies at both the state and local government levels. Now, this is not to undermine the efforts of these women; but imagine the traction we would have gained if each built on the successes and learnt from the failures of their predecessor rather than abandoning those projects to launch new ones with much the same lifespan.

WHY SOWORE’S “MARIJUANA STRATEGY” DESERVES SUPPORT
Joyless critics should shut up their envious mouths!

The “Marijuana Strategy” just articulated by frontline presidential aspirant Omoyele Sowore is the long-awaited game changer that will simultaneously boost national happiness and enhance economic development.

The man deserves commendation, not condemnation for identifying the yawning gap in the country’s economic plans and revenue projections over the past 58 years of economic illiteracy: failure to export “Igbo”.

NIGERIAN AUTOMAKERS STRUGGLE WITH ELECTRIC VEHICLES EVOLUTION
Despite the challenges bedevilling Nigeria’s automotive sector, some assemblers have expressed interest to invest in the production of electric vehicles (EVs) in the country.

Experience has shown that Nigeria usually turned out to be a dumping ground for a variety of banned products. Given its preference for used vehicles over brand new ones due to the very poor purchasing power of the masses, it stands at a higher risk of dumping when other countries eventually phased out the use of conventional fuel cars.

Electric vehicles are a novel and eco-friendly technology designed to reduce man’s dependence on fossil fuel, and potentially a threat to the conventional fuel car market. Top auto assemblers like Volvo, a Swedish vehicle manufacturer, has committed to fitting every car it produced by 2019 with electric or hybrid e
