$110 billion annually? All these Oyibo people now believe that when it comes to Africa, guessing is the best form of data collection.

If the Abacha regime altogether stole $3 billion, how is it possible for $110 billion to be lost annually. "Oyibo, I know say we nor dey try at all, but abeg, lie small, small."

@tarano

you have posted well. I'll add to your policy, legislation which will make the giving of alms to beggars illegal. That to me is the best way to end this thing. Nobody wants to be punished for doing a seemingly good deed. Besides, some of these are willing to face punishment and in fact continue begging, but alms givers are not ready to be punished for giving alms. By the time a couple of people are punished for giving alms, people will cease giving alms and when beggars can't get alms, they WILL STOP begging.
Politics › Re: Lagos “deports” 160 Northern Beggers by nex(m): 5:45pm On Aug 24, 2009
@tpia

not the whole of my post was referring to you. Just the first part.

And like you said, if even your family members or yourself are found begging, there should be on hesitation sending you HOME. We're saying the same thing. Kaduna beggars should be sent to Kaduna State not Northern Beggars to Kaduna State.

Antarctica comes into the question just to illustrate that abusing the 13th human right is abusing the 13th human right. Locally or internationally. Violating of border is violation of border and can yield the same results. But honestly, I don't want to argue.

The issue of Ladies On Trousers In Lagos, one Television Presenter and her friend were also harassed and I doubt they were prostitutes. There are a couple of Nairaland threads that deal with the issue.

I just believe Fashola was past these types of mistakes. Anyway, we're yet to confirm if all the beggars sent to Kaduna were Kaduna State indigenes (forgive my earlier indigener, it is the handwork of Nokia T9).

Well, I hope for peace. I don't support begging and I campaign for people to leave Lagos if they can't afford it.

My major beef on this issue is the EXILE thing.

Eugenics wasn't secret. They had massive AD campaigns and many people even submitted themselves voluntarily.

@mike

many people look at the action without considering the reaction which will definitely be unequal yet very opposite.

How can a Senior Advocate of Nigeria be running state affairs with so much impunity.

When he declared war against women in trousers, we all shouted because we love women in trousers. Now the fact that we don't love beggars doesn't mean Fashola can just endanger the lives entire people of the South living in the North by shipping destitutes to Kaduna State.

You don't deport people to a place that's not their home unless you want to admit that you really did was to EXILE them. You thereby give Kaduna the right to exile unwanted non-indigener or miscreants to Calabar or better still Chad.

If Kaduna state should exile all Southerners in their territory to the Antartica, they will be violating the same Article 13 of the UN Human Rights Declaration as Fashola just did. Why should a SAN even be abusing human rights? If they de-SAN him now, he will say it is political enemies.

Nigerians please condemn what is bad. Don't say because a good man is the one doing a bad thing, is should be overlooked. Is that not what will make him bad?

Literature › Re: I Wanna Learn Pidgin English! by nex(m): 2:38pm On Aug 24, 2009
Let's explore the past tense and past participles.

In the past tense, the "ed" is simply excluded from the verb to form a statement that may seem like the present continuous in English. eg:

You you cried yesterday
You cry yesterday

We begged him
We beg am (am is the second person singular in the objective. it, she he all translate to "am" in pidgin english.)

I ate breakfast
I chop morning food.

She walked away.
She waka commot.  (waka means walk. Then come out is the origin of commot which means to leave, or to exit)

I browsed the web this morning
I browse this morning.

I looked at her
I look am

The past participle is mostly translated by adding the word "don" in front of the unconjugated form of the verb and exclusion of the word "have". Don originated from wide use of the English word "done" in accentuating verbs for actions that have already been done. eg:

I have spoken
I don yarn

Mike has seen her
Mike don see am

John has met Helen
Johnny don meet Helen

They have  enjoyed themselves
Dem don enjoy (there's no object in enjoying self in pidgin english).

Usain has broken a record
Usain don break record

You have paid
You don pay/Una don pay  (in pidgin english, the singular second person is differentiated from the plural: "you" and "una"wink

Has he woken up?
E don wake?

We have won
We don win

Translation of some regularly used pidgin english words:

trowey
cast/throw away

waka
walk

spoil
destroy/corrupt/ruin/rot

mend
beat up/complain

creg
jail/prison

vex

@kingaje

do you know how many people will die if water was used to replace crude oil this week. You know how many companies will lose billions of dollars and collapse, how many families will go poor?

Africa is where life started in the entire world. Crude oil was formed from fossilled plants and animals so I believe most parts of Africa will have crude oil if well explored for. The areas near major water are just the first to be dedicatedly explored because they are most certain to yield results. That's why nobody wants to leave the Chad Basin alone it is geographically not possible for there not to be oil in the Chad Basin because all of that area was forested millions of years ago. Nile Delta same, Niger Delta the same.

The Middle East and South America are the second and third places to be inhabited, Eastern Europe was the fourth. If all these places could have massive deposits of crude oil, why not the whole of Africa?

If Ogun says there's crude oil there, It's most likely.

what do you think will happen if Kaduna gathers all the non-indigene law breakers, including beggars, pick pockets, touts, armed robbers, rapists and vandals and ship them down to Lagos. People like you only think on the short run. What's wrong with stretching you mind a little further?

@oyb

Eugenics didn't start as killing but it ended up as massive racial cleansing.

@No2Atheism

I don't wait for anyone to deport me. As my business was crunched, I packed my bags and went back home. That is how human beings should behave. Why can't you people do the same before they deport you all to Kwara.
Politics › Re: Lagos “deports” 160 Northern Beggers by nex(m): 9:43am On Aug 24, 2009
@all

ARE THE BEGGARS ALL FROM KADUNA STATE?

It may be wrong for Lagos to deport citizens of other states, but to particularly send them to Kaduna State is looking for serious trouble.

What if Kaduna decides to deport all criminals from its state which are not indigenes and send them all down to Lagos.

I've been complaining about beggars in Lagos since 1996 and the only solution to stop people from begging is to stop people from giving them alms. If you arrest beggars, others will take their place, if you release them, they will return because their wellbeing depends on it. They are that desperate.

When alms givers are arrested or fined for giving alms, this rubbish will stop. Nobody wants to be punished for doing something they are not desperate for.

If KAI can arrest about 20 alms givers from different parts of Lagos and fine them N50 thousand or take them to a magistrate who will sentence them to 6 months without labour, I tell you, nobody will give beggars money anymore. If nobody gives beggars money, beggars would not keep begging. They will find crafts to engage in, go back home or commit suicide.

Please, I'm not saying Fashola should not abuse people's human rights by deporting other indigenes, but if he has to, they should be deported to their states of origin not Kaduna state. This action on Kaduna State would be seen as a prelude to war. Deporting Kaduna State indigenes to Kaduna may be sending a message to the Government of Kaduna to stand up to its responsibilities. However, when you deport Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Borno, Niger, Gombe and Adamawa all to Kaduna State, you're starting what nobody can finish.

You think I'm patronizing, but I'm just warning. Have you engaged in a real advanced argument with 32 teeth and grey hair? Okay.

@tpia

Adolf Hitler was named by TIME Magazine as man of the year for transforming Germany from the debris of World War 1 to the number 1 position in Europe. While all the praises were showered on him, people knew how he was CLEANING UP the place by sending a lot of Germans to EUGENICS Centres.

I repeat, what Fashola did by shipping various destitute Northerners to Kaduna is very wrong and there could be extreme consequences and Fashola knows this. He's not just any lawyer off the streets, he's a SAN.

We mustn't look at the Lagos Governor's good works too much that we begin to overlook his bad works. It is his bad works that will finally make him a bad Governor.

Finally, I want to sound a note of warning to everyone on Nairaland: Do Not Argue with davidylan. Don't ask me why, just don't!

This Fashola of a man can just be doing well, then he will go out and mess things up.

I was happy that he wanted to take care of the begging problem but to ship all beggars suspected of Northern extraction to Kaduna is stupid, childish, dangerous, illegal and I don't know what other word to describe this madness.

Kaduna does not owe any responsibilities to beggars from other Northern states.

Imagine if the Nigerian Government arrests all Oyibo looking people including Chinese, South Americans, Lebanese, Russians, French, Arabs, Indians and even Nigeriens and deports all of them to the UK. It's not whether he deported that is my problem. It is whether he deported to the right location. This action alone can cause war.

I have to go sleep now but let's not forget, this Lagos Governor is doing good works, but sometimes he'll just get brain touch. That's how he ordered police to be harassing, arresting and humiliating women wearing trousers when he newly entered office. I guess now again, he will claim no knowledge of what happened.

And all of you talking this and saying that, you think Fashola is going to stop at beggars? What of Job Seekers? There next on the list.

Please go back home before the inconsiderate, illegal and long arm of Fashola catches up with you. Okay.
Literature › Re: I Wanna Learn Pidgin English! by nex(m): 1:55am On Aug 24, 2009
Let's quickly look at some auxillary verbs

"will" and "shall" are substituted by "go" to state promise or obligation to future action usually in combination with other verbs. It is also used to show the future tense. The auxillary verb "go" should not be mistaken or cannot be used interchange with the verb "go" which is also used just as in English to mean to move, to leave or depart, to travel. This auxillary verb "go" can be used as indicated below. eg:

I will pay
I go pay

Mike will drive
Mike go drive

It is Mike who will drive.
Na Mike go drive.

I shall go home
I go go house (home in pidgin english is used to indicate hometown only)

we will know what happened
we go sabi  wetin happen

They shall sleep here
Dem go crash for here  (for in pidgin can be used to stress indication location or situation)

The auxillary verb "should" is replaced by "suppose" in pidgin english to show duty or also generally in expressing the future tense too, but regarding duty or events "meant to" happen with a high degree of certainty. Similar to the use of the "suppose" in English, but in pidgin english, suppose is more widely used. eg:

You should be online
You suppose dey online

Peters should beat Tyson
Peters suppose beat Tyson

They should be in prison
Dem suppose dey creg (in is never used in pidgin sometimes replaced by "inside" but generally, It's just done away with).

In questions which begin with "should", the pidgin translation "make" should be used. "make" is also used to replace "let" when used in requests or suggestions. eg:

Should I marry her?
Make I marry am?

Should there be light?
Make light dey?

Let's get stoned
Make we high

Let there be light.
Make light dey.

Some basic useful phrases in pidgin english.

Which levels?
What's up?

Fall hand
disappoint

shine eye
be observant

Siddon look
docile

Wetin dey?
What's happening?

How far?
What's new?

Go Slow
Traffic Jam

Area boy
Thug/Tout

Bad Belle
