Uninvited Guests On-board ; Dangers involved A teenager identified as Daniel Ikehina was discovered to have breached security at Benin airport, Nigeria and sneaked into the wheel well of a Boeing 737-700 belonging to Arik Air departing for Lagos on Saturday. Cases of stowaways are not new to aviation but survivors are very few, less than 20% live to tell the tale of this 'courageous' act. So Daniel is very very lucky to be alive today, how he achieved this 'feat' can only be explained by the young lad himself. Someone reading this article may be contemplating how to try this on a Lagos-New York flight (IN SEARCH OF GREENER PASTURES), well since Daniel survived his adventure, why cant I take it a step further? If life don taya you and you feel like committing suicide its worth the shot else, DO NOT ATTEMPT IT! Continue reading to discover why few stowaways survive, and mind you, this is also a trend in the marine industry, but unlike aviation the crew aboard a ship could be very brutal when a stowaway is discovered , I recommend you see the 1996 Movie 'Deadly Voyage' Directed by John Mackenzie to get an idea of the level of brutality I'm referring to. Okay, back to aviation stowaways, the moment you decide to hide in the wheel well of an aircraft on a long haul flight your fate is sealed as the landing gear begins to retract, below are the reasons stowaways die in the wheel well of aircraft: if the massive landing gear doesn't crush you on takeoff when retracted, the pulleys and cables in the compartment can tear your skin you need to understand that the wheel well of airplanes aren't equipped for passengers, they lack oxygen, heating and pressurization systems which keep passengers in the cabin safe. Unlike passengers in the cabin (who paid full fare for the trip) stowaways face temperatures that drop below -55C in an oxygen-deprived unpressurized compartment. At high altitude which the aircraft is designed to operate, a human body at such level is susceptible to hypothermia and hypoxia. The percentage of oxygen in air, at 21%, remains almost unchanged up to 21,000 metres (69,000 ft). The RMS velocities of diatomic nitrogen and oxygen are very similar and thus no change occurs in the ratio of oxygen to nitrogen. However, it is the air density itself, the number of molecules (of both oxygen and nitrogen) per given volume, which drops as altitude increases. Consequently, the available amount of oxygen to sustain mental and physical alertness decreases with altitude. Dehydration due to the higher rate of water vapor lost from the lungs at higher altitudes may contribute to the symptoms of altitude sickness. Altitude sickness usually occurs following a rapid ascent. In some of these cases, the symptoms are temporary and usually abate as altitude acclimatisation occurs. However, in most cases, altitude sickness can be fatal! Asides from the risk of being crushed by the landing gear, onset of hypothermia and hypoxia; other dangers a stowaway faces include but are not limited to: tinnitus, deafness, frostbite, tremors, acidosis, vision impairment amongst others. With all these Odds stacked against stowaways, it remains a mystery how Daniel survived the 'hitchhiked ride' in one piece! Could it be as a result of the short distance between Benin to Lagos, which resulted in the aircraft flying at a relatively lower flight-level? Many questions would continue to be asked, but one question I have no answer to is "How to survive in an aircraft wheel well at high altitude!" Save a life today, share this article. Thank you. Thinking of hiding in an aircraft wheel well for a free flight? Here is why you shouldn't >> http:///15lHci3 |
But let's ask ourselves this sincere question, is it that Arsenal doesn't want to sign or the 'big' players do not want to come to Arsenal? Imagine we lost Higuan to Napoli! Sincerely ask yourselves, which 'big' player can Arsenal attract? |

Wifey begging Nigerians to stop making fun of this civil servant, Father n Hubby. At this point in time, I'll do almost anything to be in this man's shoes!!! Instead of wallow in pity, I suggest he drops his uniform and make the best of this situation while he still can. He had better get a brand manager and delve into entertainment! Now ask me, who in Nigeria doesn't want to listen to what this dude has to say He had better snap outta d self-pity state of mind and use this as a spring board unto greater things! He should claim the 'Oga @d top' brand and not allow people make money off his 'misery' A single endorsement could make him more than his 'annual salary' and after all said and done let's see who has the last laff and smiles to the Bank!!! |

This list was made by a lady in her early twenties. The closer to 30, the fewer the items on the list. and when she's over 30, only one item on the list. When she clocks 40, trust me she wouldn't be able to remember she ever made a list!!! ![]() |

zylla: Some questions need to be asked: Why is it that it was the radar ATC that the pilot could talk to and why not the control tower's ATC?Aircrafts can reach Radar frequency anywhere within the Nigerian Airspace(thxs to the just deployed Radar coverage by the ministry of Aviation; which means the days of missing Aircrafts in our airspace maybe over) but can only reach Lagos ATC or any other state's ATC only when within the that ATC's airspace(coverage area)! So the pilot had to be handed over or switched to the Lagos ATC by the radar ATC when they felt he was within range. Understood? |
valacious: And i can bet the plane ages here are what u will call 'football ages' or 'paper ages'. U will be shocked at d real ages of these flying molues.IGNORAMUS!!! Its very impossible to manipulate the age of an aircraft! The line number/serial no is known worldwide and can be tracked by anyone! And what I want y'all to know is that the age of an aircraft is insignificant if the scheduled and routine maintenance are performed as at when due. The diff btw new and old aircraft is just the cost of maintenace basically! If the quality dept of the airline thru NCAA ensure and enforce safety trust me we have nothing to worry about. Beam light should be on the Aircraft maintenace dept n Quality dept of all airlines as well as NCAA themselves. |

I'll like to share my experience with you guys and hear your opinion, @present I work with a coy(an airline in Lagos) where I did my IT after OND, I have my HND(distinction) but I'm exempted from NYSC because I did PT in my HND. At the moment I'm in a dilema, cos I knw d importance of NYSC discharged cert in Nigeria. I'm applying for DE into OAU n when admitted, I would resign from work to spend another 3yrs+ in d university. Is this a wise move? What's ur advise please? Thanks guys! |
