There is no real authority in nature. We just happen to control most of this planet due to our superior intellect and tool making capabilities. On the other hand we're going way too far in our control of nature. We do not yet know enough about genetics and ecology to rape nature as we do now. Our world may be irreplacably damaged. |
goodguy:Wouldn't the doctor have explained it to her already? If she wants to go against the doctor's advice, she shouldn't have the baby in the first place |
fabian:Okay, let's make that assumptions fabian:Isn't it already a punishable offence? Maybe not enforced, but punishable nonetheless |
@layi Thank you for your honest response. Could you explain to me what mean by living by it and how that makes you think it's unquestionable? |
holyghost:Dreams are just your brain arranging the information from the past day and storing it in long term memory, rearranging some neural pathways. It uses both collected information from your past and the new information that came in during the daytime. This rearrangement causes you to have weird dreams, of which you only remember the most remarkable ones. To have anything to say about this we need to know the information content of the dreams, , the ones you remeber and the events with which they correlate. Out of that we need to find out if these correlations are statistically significan to warrant claims of foresight. This has not yet been proven (and it probably won't be proven anyway) Intuition is usually knowledge that is so well drilled into memory that it becomes part of the subconscience, so you can be surprised with the results because you didn't consciously go through the steps that lead you to that conclusion holyghost:Very well possible, nothing supernatural about it. We may not yet understand the mechanisms, but this does not violate any natural law. Some people can even feel in their bones when the weather is going to change. It is usually caused by changes in air humidity or air pressure, giving some people a foresight into the weather holyghost:Optical illusions or your mind playing tricks on you. It happens very often, nothing spiritual about it, even though it may seem so holyghost:that would be proof of the supernatural if the occurence of the prophecy were statistically significant. if you can have someone make this sort of claim a few times and record whether or not it happens, I would accept that as proof. (given that this cannot happen by chance) holyghost:I don't understand your point here |
I honestly don't know what to say about your story. This seems to be very weird. Did the chimney come down in the end. Anyway, is any of this ever recorded? if you were working during the day as well as night, you may have been hallucinating because you were tired or seen things and imagined others due to being tired or maybe lack of food or anything. I don't know the context Why is there not even one recording of such an event by an outside observer. Your senses can easily be tricked. Magicians give the impression of sawin people into two halves, sticking them with swords and the like without inflicting harm. They're all illusions. If just one person could reproduce one of these event in front of a sceptic audience, just once> Hasn't happened yet. |
layi:Why is it bogus? If you mean that I require something tangible and that you think nothing tangible is required as proof, then indeed, it is bogus by your requirements. Maybe I just don't understand what you mean by bogus. layi:Let's operationalize this. Give me a definition of spiritual that makes it tangible and measurable, either in it's properties or in it's effects. We can start from here If you cannot get to this level, your reasoning is circular: relying on something, the spiritual, to prove itself, the spiritual. layi:There are countless evidences that prove the existence of the air we breathe. Photographing air is like trying to pick up a needle with a bulldozer, the wrong instrument for the task. layi:It has nothing to do with logic, evidence of it's effects and an indisputable correlation with the acts of witchcraft will do |
joshjosh:I'm in agreement with you on this - no point in arguing here. joshjosh:See, just look into your own heart and re-read what you just put here. 1. Racism does not have to be hating, differentiating in thought and action is sufficient. 2. You're talking about opinions, while I pointed out what you wrote can easily be described as racist. You make derogatory remarks based on perceived characteristics of a group, which for convenience's sake could be called a 'race' 3. You assume there are races here. There is only one race, the human race. Among the human race you have different groups that have some visual and cultural markers on a group level. On the level of the individual, this does not mean anything, especially when you are trying to differentiate individuals on that basis 4. There is no copyright by anyone on wisdom or knowledge, it is hear earned through education and experience, but false ideas remain false regardless of their origin. Labeling something as 'white' to avoid criticism is escaping a real debate. Let's just look at the merits of the arguments |
joshjosh:I'm sorry... it certainly is not. I hate the racist tendencies of most Belgians and I - as everyone - need to question myself constantly not to fall into the trap of ethnocentric thinking But honestly, what does this have to do with the topic? |
In many cases, I have seen members of this forum call in the authority of the Bible to settle discussions. Now, to those people that take the Bible as the unquestioned word of God, why exactly do you take the Bible as such? What makes you personaly take the position that the Bible is the unquestionable word of God and how do you relate that to the obvious contradictions we see with the knowledge we gained through science and history? This is an open discussion on your personal motives, please do not let this derail into a flame war. |
holyghost:Let's then just say our opinions diverge. The authority of the Bible is not something I subscribe to. That would be something for another topic, I guess. |
Ka:Of course that's a better solution, if that is possible. I'm a child of divorced parents myself and I know firsthand what the impact is of a fighting divorce. If you can separate without anger or bitterness, it is indeed better. When both parents fight each other tooth and nail during the divorce though, the impact can be devastating. I was just reacting from my personal experience, the generalisation was indeed unjustified. |
PaypalGod:They should be punished to the fullest extend the law permits. It is never acceptable for any society to take the law into your own hands |
goodguy:I'm only saying that you need to come with more convincing evidence to make me believe in witchcraft - or anything for that matter - incredible and supernatural claims must meet an extraordinary burden of proof. Maybe people believe in it, but that does not make it true. Unfortunately people hold all sorts of crazy beliefs. |
I'll do some research tomorrow and start a thread on Wicca. SHould be fun |
I'm thinking - no I know - that my wife is back in Nigeria. I miss her already and will miss her for the next month |
Seun:Exactly. Nothing more, nothing less |
goodguy:Thx, Now I know what the Bible says about withcraft, but that doesnt't give these claims any more credibility. goodguy:That's a giant leap of faith. Does this have the same credibility as Noah's ark and the great flood? I only ask for proof of one case of witchcraft, no need for anything more goodguy:The link with Christian views on witchcraft is interesting. Wicca actually seems like an interesting religion |
K2DaC:I still don't understand. Is that making a cut in both your arms and letting the wounds touch each other? |
goodguy:What's so spiritual about witchcraft? I do believe that there's more than what we currently can observe and that there are a lot of things we cannot explain yet, but I have no heart for the supernatural. I know too much about the persecution of the so-called-whitches in Middle Age Europe to be impressed by any claims of withcraft. Superstition mixed with ignorance, mixed with vengeful quarellers with scores to settle, that's al there is to this so-called withcraft And I'm dead serious about my challenge. You surely would be interested in 100 euro, not? I do promise in front of this whole community that you will recieve it, if you can meet my challenge. I could transfer the money to your bank account or send a Western Union transfer, any one you prefer (I would deduct the charges though). Most whites I know just don't have the brains to be scientific. This is not a black or white thing. |
Mob justice... disgusting I hope those bystanders will sleep very badly to reflect on their lack of courage and humanity. How can they possibly live with themselves? |
What's a blood convenant? |
Seun:Seun, Do not forget that there is a difference between the time you fall in love with someone (butterflies in your belly, physical discomfort when separated, not being able to think about anything else, ...) and the love you feel in a long term relationship. If you're married, the being in love will turn into a feeling of deep love and commitment: you know each other inside out, you feel connected and the bond you forged becomes really strong. You can easily fall in love with someone else, but you would never compromise that for the love of your life. If you haven't been there, it's hard to explain. The only problem with love is that you actively need to reinforce that bond. If you neglect your relationship, the love is going to fade away |
She's getting a little older now, but I used to fall for Theresa Randle

Absolute free will does not exist. Your choices are limited by both internal and external factors Life is only as important as it's consequences on the happiness of people be it your own or the people close to you (family, friends, children). The more impact your life has, the more important it becomes, be it positive or negative. The impact that was a direct consequence of your choices is what you are ethically bound to (e.g. if you have children or enter in a marriage, you can no longer autonomously decide over your own life and commit suicide, you have no such obligations with regards to your parents, as you did have no say in being born - but of course that does not mean you should disregard their feelings) |
joshjosh:Everyone that starts a sentence with a denial such as i am not any white man hater. i am not a racist. usually is just that: a racist Or what would you call: * they like the police are what we call institutional racist Meaning? Could you make an argument out of this gibberish * the culture of bozz and drugs amongst the caucasian fuels their promiscuity How can you call this anything else but racist? * in fact i admire many things about them They make fantastic music full of rhythm, they know how to dance and have such good athletes wanna go on? |
joshjosh:And what's your point? Do you think everything is well and dandy with female genital mutilation? Btw, male circumcision is just cutting of the foreskin, nothing even remotely close to female circumcision; |
Interesting question. My opinion: 1. Once you marry, you are entering in a bond with your wife/husband. It is a long term commitment you should not jump into lightly. That's why I would advise a married couple to be to live together for at least one year before they make the commitment 2. In mutual agreement, the couple can separate, but only after they have tried everything they can to save the marriage. It is important to understand that you must tolerate each others little annoyances. Tolerance, trust and communication are key 3. Once you decide to have children, everything changes 4. From that moment onward, your first and foremost responsibility is the well being of your children. If that means that you have to stay in an unhappy marriage, so be it 5. Having children is the single most important decision you can make in your life. From that moment onward your life is no longer your own 6. If you cannot make that commitment, don't have children, you are not ready/fit to have children |
goodguy:You think so? The doctors probably explained her in detail what the consequences could be. |
goodguy:Why? We have been tinkering with life since we set foot on this planet - dogs, cows, chicken, pigs, horses, goats, etc are not exactly natural wild animals. They have been created by humans through selective breeding. Biotechnology is just making all of this quicker and easier |
goodguy:I'm thinking I have to thank you. no no no I do thank you for your kind words |
goodguy:Let me answer with one word: BULLSHIT I hereby give a bounty of one hundered Euro out of my own personal reserve (meagre as it may be) to the first person that can prove to me that witchcraft exists. Terms of the challenge:
[li]Give a clear definition of witchcraft that includes the supernatural (using poison or herbs does not count)[/li] [li]The supernatural act cannot possibly be attributed to chance[/li] [li]Confessions do not count (who knows under what circumstances they came about)[/li]
If you think 100 Euro is not enough for your liking, just take up the challenge here: http://skepdic.com/randi.html You can pick up a bounty of 1 million US dollars. Surely, that must be easy. <SARCASM>Currently not one individual out of the 6,5 billion people inhabiting this earth has been able to claim the prize. I'm sure you will be able to do so</SARCASM> |
