Car Talk / Genuine Or Fake Piston Rings? by Niell(m): 11:23am On May 29, 2021
I'm about to get my mums 2005 Honda Accord re-ringed, so I got TPR piston rings. I made arrangements for it to be bought and sent to me but when I showed the box to my mechanic he said they're fake and that he would very much preferred to be the one who did the buying. My problem on the other hand is with the ring size; It's 0.25. Is that the right size or will the cylinders need to be bored, cuz I really dont want to do that.
What do the experts in the house think.

Hello Gazzuz. The idle air control valve in my 2005 accord has been having issues for the past two weeks and recently the mechanic resorted to blocking valve opening in the throttle body with a papper using glue and then puncturing a little hole on it. It seems to work fine when driving but usually gets very low and even stalls in the morning. I don't know what to do anymore.

What an insightful and stimulating review. Thanks so much. I quite agree with your submission. Given that GS is rarely seen on the road, getting a mechanic who has dexterity on it won't be a challenge?

I dont think so at all. The thing is finding a good honest mechanic but sadly that's like trying to find an oasis in the Sahara, because some only start off good then mutate later on. Its mechanics guess work that almost destroyed my mum's '05 accord, not to mention the money one spends buying a part only to discover that wasn't the problem. If you can, please always run a diagnostic to know exactly what the problem is. Read your owners manual and be adamantly insistent about the specified parts and lubricants.

Car Talk / Re: Acura ZDX, Honda Crosstour And The BMW X5 by Niell(m): 12:36pm On Dec 30, 2020
Japanese cars have been known their reliability. If at all I were to choose, I'd buy the 2010-2013 mdx which the zdx is based on. The zdx looks good but too expensive for a car that can only comfortably seat two adults. The back seat is only comfortable for children and rebellious monsters who are just starting to experience puberty. I think they're called teenagers. I dont even know what to say about the trunk.

The crosstour from the rear end looks like a bloated cow. Its basically the accords energetic chubby sister in heels. Even though the second generation pilot looks like it was designed by a brick layer's apprentice, that's what I'd rather buy.

If I had the financial audacity I'd buy the X5.
If you're gonna be doing a lot of traveling, meaning your gonna be doing a lot of off-roading because this is Nigeria, you're probably better off with the GX. The go anywhere capability puts the mind at rest even though its overpriced and way too... common.

It all comes down to what you want in a car. The ES is an executive sedan and focuses more on comfort, meaning you are pampered with all the technological and luxury wizardry available. Its basically a Camry with a bit more attention payed to intricate detailing.

The GS being a grand sedan was made to take on the Germans. Sport enthusiast and gearheads will like this. If not for anything, they can at least drift with it because its Rear wheel drive biased (comes with all wheel drive).

Mind you they are both fast, luxurious, smooth, quiet and RELIABLE, only the ES comes with a softer suspension, and probably quieter which translates to it being more isolating. Even the transmission is buttery smooth. The GS might take a little extra naira notes when it come to keeping it in optimum condition and on the road but I'd still go for it. You'll frequently see a "twin" when you pilot an ES.

Wait abi nah him pack other whales sperm abi wetin?? I wish I understood
A large portion of its head contains an oily substance that resembles seminal fluid. This liquid had a lot of economic value during the industrial revolution. It was used as lamp oil and for the production of transmission fluid till about the 70s or so. This kind of whale was known for that substance and thats why its called sperm whale.

GX 470 is the top pick for Nigerians. Its so reliable it might outlive you haha. Whatever you know about fuel economy should be thrown out the window, unless of course you own a refinary. Price: late 3s to about 6 million depending on the model year. Good but Overpriced!!!

The XC90 is not as off-road worthy as the GX but its not afraid of getting dirty. You can get a 2007 year for about 1.8 million.

Land Rover LR3, Sport. Above and Beyond. Take their word for it.Not including the Range Rover is like going against the law. The set back is that they weigh as much as the Titanic so you'll be a celebrity at gas stations. All mechanics will see when you drive in is dollar signs. About 3M for the LR and about 3.5 to 4M for the Sport depending on the year.

I'd personally go for the 2009 MDX. Its a mild off-roader which I think is just about good enough unless only if you work for NatGio and want to document your journey in some romote area in central Africa or you plan on visiting death valley.

Touareg is underestimate but non the less incredibly good. Love it. The ford explorer isn't bad either.

Apart from the power and efficiency aspect of it, 4 cylinders tend to vibrate more than V6 engines. They can be noisy too. V6 engines are much smoother and quieter even when idle.

Car Talk / Re: HOW GOOD IS LEXUS ES300? by Niell(m): 10:26am On Jun 26, 2020
The ES300 is very much a V6 camry of that same year with a tuxedo. You know, plush leather, thicker glass, more padding, suspension tune to effortlessly sock up bumps which accounts for its very quiet and refined ride. Its a good car but very ugly IMO. Those headlights that makes it look like a depressed creature from the bottom of the Pacific. Prefer the 2005 Avalon. But who cares. If you like it, nothing else matters.
Car Talk / Re: Mercedes Benz Mechanics And Experienced Users Please Advice!!! by Niell(m): 9:54am On Jun 09, 2020
Machines were designed and made to run. Parking any car for too long can cause damage to some parts especially that which results from rust. Driving your precious GL on weekends is fine in my opinion. I personally think the less miles you put on a car the slower it gets maxed out. In other words, the longer it will last. You gotta admit though, that Mercedes GL is really one thirsty Mammoth of a car.

Uhhm about ground clearance, the venza actually has 8 inches of that, which is very good. I'm still with the RX though.

The firm doesn't have their own auction or vehicles; it is a licensed buyer from copart just like I am and anyone can be, including you.
A Little off the line but Well, it seems you've got everything mapped out and well sorted. Good luck.

Try auctionexport.com. The S8 is rare so you might not get exactly what you want. Why not go for the A8, its adequately powerful.

Lol, timing chains are universally considered to be better than belts. Almost all modern cars use chains, not sure how you could possibly spin that to be a pseudo-negative thing.
I know that. In fact it might be one of the things you never have to worry about as it can last the cars "life time". My point is it would most definitely be more expensive to repair when it gets damaged. I made that very clear up there "...if at all it does"

What's wrong with a timing chain.
nothing really. Just harder and more expensive to fix. It does take a long time before it gets damaged...if at all it does.

Car Talk / Re: Audi S8 2007 by Niell(m): 12:03pm On Jun 06, 2020
Go for it but then you have to take whatever it is you know about maintaining a normal car and flush it down the toilet. Please read the owner manual; know the maitainance schedules and the proper specifications of what to use. Find a mechanic that understands and specializes in fixing Audi or Volkswagen cars.
You need to understand that according to records the audi isn't as reliable as Toyota and Honda but one gets tired of seeing hundreds of those everyday. It also isn't high off the ground-about 4 inches or so. Comes with a timing chain and parts can be a little expensive. You should check out the LS 460. It's a worthy contender.

Car Talk / Re: Lexus Rx 350 (2010) Vs Toyota Venza (2010) by Niell(m): 12:39pm On Jun 02, 2020
They are both very similar cars and share quite a number of components- built on the same platform. Engine, suspension and what not.
The venza is "camry wagon" and a family crossover built to be affordable- by American standards of course. Lets not forget safety and efficiency. The interior build quality is just so so with a little less attention paid to detail. The abundant use of plastic might irritate you if you care about that sort of thing. It does have a potent V6 and very efficient 4 cylinder engine.

The RX being a Lexus was built to be very luxurious and generally more refined. Thicker glass, more padding and sound deadening materials, so you're completely isolated from the chaos of the outside world. The RX is plusher, quieter, smoother and mostly definitely more expensive than the venza, not to say that the venza is terrible in anyway.
It all boils down to what you want. I personally like the RX because I think it looks more rounded. The venza looks like an SUV and a wagon at the same time

The CX-9 is bigger, has a third row and comes with a naturally aspirated V6. The CX-7 is beautiful no doubt, comes with a turbo charged 4 cylinder engine that that everyone seems to be complaining about. I'd go for the CX-9 for the extra room it has. Did I mention its a head turner? It might also interest you to know the CX-9 shares the same engine with the first generation Ford edge. Good luck!
