The question of accepting the man's surname or not after marriage depends to some
degree on her age. By the time most single ladies hit 40, that question is no longer an issue.
I'm just wondering, if faced with a choice of either accepting the guy's surname or staying
single their whole life, what will most ladies prefer?  Sisters, go ask your moms.

Not all women are desperate and if the man is an asshole a sensible woman will not marry him regardless if she is old or not.

Only a dummy would marries an asshole who thinks surname is more important than the compatibility and durability within marriage.

The day the 'wife to be' and I start arguing over whether she keeps her father's name or not is the day Il know we should start reconsidering marriage plans. If we can't agree on such a simple matter, then no point getting married.

There's no yes or no answer. Situations may arise where she needs to keep her father's name. For instance, she may be the only child and may want to keep her father's name or it may be something she wants to do out of respect for her father. However, it MUST be hyphenated (is there such a word?) with my own surname. I won't even support if my own sister wants to keep her maiden name after marriage. What then is the use of getting married? We may as well stay as partners living together!

I did not intend for this thread to lead to an all out war between the sexes. Apparently the fact that this topic evokes so much passion across the board indicates that it is an issue that many couples have to grapple with. As I type my friend and his fiance have called off their wedding because of this name issue. I would have done the same thing if I were in his shoes. Surprisingly, I did not even know that our Yankified Naija women have now grown more wings than their American counterparts, for this issue to even arise between two young, Naija couples who want to tie the knot. Both families have gotten involved and have advised the girl to compromise, but she is acting like someone on this thread (I won't mention names). I hope they resolve it and go ahed and get married. My two cents
