There is need to decongest Lagos – Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan said the Federal Government is desirous and committed to decongesting Lagos State of cargoes as well as making the aviation industry more efficient.

He also reterated the need to ensure that the six-geopolitical zones in the country are economically viable to drive growth in the nation.

Jonathan said this in Ilorin on Tuesday while inaugurating the International Cargo Terminal building, Ilorin International Airport.

He said his administration would make sure that the zones were not “just for sharing political offices” but are strong economic hubs and catalysts for socio-economic transformation.

He explained that the government would revolutionise agriculture as a viable strategy for industrial revolution, job creation and economic transformation.

The President, who was in Kwara State for a one day working visit, inaugurated some projects embarked upon by the Kwara State Government.

The projects included, the International Cargo Terminal building, the International Aviation College, Ilorin, Kwara State University being built by Charvet Nigeria Limited, Mass Train Transit Scheme and Ilorin Water Works Project, Asa-Dam.

Jonathan said, “From all indications, we will play our own part to encourage our airports to receive cargoes. FG is committed to decongesting Lagos and making sure that the six geo-political zones of the country are not just used for shared political offices but also for economic development to position them for economic growth so that Lagos would be decongested.”

The President stated that the Federal Government might no longer be involved in running secondary and primary school education but would devote its resources in elevating the standard of university education in the country.

Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki said his administration had built a solid foundation for the economic and socio-political transformation of the state.

He added that the projects would improve the economic viability of the state as well create jobs for the teeming unemployed residents and other Nigerians.

“We hope that by August, 1, we will have the first set of students to start learning here. We have already 22 registered students and there is capacity for more,” he said.

The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Zulu-Gambari, said the nation had many problems but advised Jonathan to deliver efficient and functional electricity to the nation.

It shall come to pass. I know GEJ got a big plan for the South East. I hope his reign will signal the end of FG's absence in Igboland.

Nwanne, it has started.

I know you've been disappointed by the political intrigues in Abuja but realistically, Ndigbo want a powerful regional economic hub.

I see this guy fulfilling the initiatives to that effect. He has his sights set. He knows what's up. Calm down, we're almost there. You will smile soon.

SE, here I come. I must be part of this industrial age and transformation.  I must relocate the HQ of my company from London to Alaigbo. cool

I think more than talk, actual money will need be spent on additional seaports.

From what I've heard, the port itself isn't well-managed. So that is another area of possible improvement.

The Ndigbo need people like me who will remain watchful of those who do not have the Igbo best interest at heart.

As long OBJ is around Jonathan, I will be wary of their plans for the Ndigbo. . .

However, I do hope to find industrialization of the East. Especially in Abia, the commercial heartland.

My brothers say otherwise. undecided Anyway, until I see tangible change instead of just words, I will take a wait and see approach.

In addition, I see no mention of the South East specifically in this article.

Whats up with the calabar port?
Is it meant for import or export?

Why use pristine Calabar like that, when there is Port Harcourt? Port Harcourt is more of a commercial city than Calabar will ever be.

Gej will do something about the east

remember we northerners also want the river niger dreged so we can have a seaport as well instead of always going through apapa lagos

so he has to do the seaport

i am not too sure of the airport tho, but no one can tell

also he has to remember to do true fedralism, this is very important than any sea or air port

let each region stay on their own cheesy cheesy

i see good prospects for aligbo in gej tenure
Re: There Is Need To De-congest Lagos And Industrialise The South East - Jonathan by EzeUche2(m): 6:24am On May 18, 2011
Yes, I would like investments in Alaigbo. Igbos need to look to our homeland. Industrialization of the East is the only way forward. Onitsha and Aba must be made into commercial titans in not only Nigeria, but West Africa in general.

i now know why is very easy to 'toss' around the mind of average igbo even if he went to harvard.

Wow! Just one political statement the bi.tch.es are throwing their pants ready to be bleep again. Common! Fooools.

@ Topic.
I wish they statrt packing straight away. GEJ do that for me.
Am tired living with snakes around me.

Thats a difference between celebration and hope. The latter sways me.

Please haters, it isn't hard to hope. Its a very powerful virtue i believe in. Even if that hope causes excitement atimes, i'll take it.

Just as i wish the best 4 d east, i do same for the west n any other region in 9ja. Can't we have hope that 9ja could change? Why the tension here all of a sudden?

I think some peeps here are allergic to positive news. Not good.

I've no problem with attempts to "de-congest" Lagos (whatever that means), so long as the relevant moneymaking structures there in (the port) are handed over to Lagos State. Then at that point, any Tom, Dick and Harry can build a port, manage it himself and derive the benefit thereof.

In such a situation, I think the intrinsic and physical advantage of Lagos Port will cause it to still dominate the industry.

I would be pretty displeased if Lagos Port is sabotaged by GEJ, though.

Build more ports. . . but then let us control the management of our own port (and get the revenue from it.)

Serious mode=

Are you people for real about this crappy random speech?

Abeg let's get serious here. How do you develop a region/Country? Don't you need plans, studies and road maps to follow?

The fact is GEJ can not do anything for anybody, maybe one or 2 pacifiers like one university here and some other federal project there, that's all he can do. For Nigeria or any part of Nigeria to see serious development, there's got to be a Marshall Plan with credible and non corrupt people from our business community, our universities to dedicated and hands on presidential officials with presidential mandate to get things done.

Nearly all the federal official in Abuja including GEJ's ministers are not interested in anything beyond attention to their pockets. We need serious soul searching and national re orientation by honest leaders, leaders that are definitely not what we have today

Abeg let's get real.

I just don't get why ibo people just can not get off their lazy as/ses and start developing their own communities like many states in Nigeria are doing, it's like they need the federal government for everything, I bet they need the federal government to tie their freeking shoes for them.

You claim you are business savvy, but your business acumen means nothing if it can not in any way transform your continuities.

Are your business folks getting together to build airports, sea ports, trade zones, refineries? No. You need the federal government to spoon feed you everyday thing. It's like the east is void of people with vision and foresight, but they'll beat chest everyday that they are the smartest people in Nigeria, they are jews, they are japan of Africa, t he alpha and omega of every thing, bit they still have to beg and crawl on the ground for everything. I just don't get it.

Kaunda is building a new city from scratch, Ogun and Ondo are building new ultra modern sea port, refineries, trade zones, Lagos is moving fast ahead as if the federal government doesn't even exist, but you have ibo people sitting on their hands waiting to be spoon fed like a day old baby.

ibo leaders are the most useless leaders in Nigeria, they suk politically, they lack vision, they are not proactive, they've brainwashed ibo people that nothing including their incompetency is not their fault and fingers must be pointed elsewhere outside their borders, it's like they are not responsible for anything, a sad and sorry situation that the general ibo public bought into, including their so called leaders of tomorrow sitting here on NL.

I wonder when you are going to sit up and ask yourself who is responsible for your destiny.
