Today, the North that was just one one Region has 19 states while the South that was 3 Regions has 17.


You still wonder how the North benefited from Gowon abolishing Regionalism?

Abolishment of the Regions did not benefit any region especially not the North and the SW simply because it impeded and stopped regional progress and development, the North was thriving with vast agric resources and their world-famous groundnut pyramids all over the North, also in the SW with their many first in Nigeria and Africa like the first skyscraper, first modern stadia, first TV station and so on, but the abolition of regional administration put a stop to regional development and their developmental goals and desires, now their every corner of Nigeria must go to the center to plead for roads, bridges, hospitals and even beg for money.

They say Ironsi did not punish the coup plotters in the six months he was in power but nobody ever says that Gowon did not do the same despite the fact that he was incharge for a year before the war started

They say that Ironsi plotted a coup but Ironsi never knew of the coup until the morning it occurred.

They say that Ironsi destroyed Regionalism and introduced unitary rule, which is a lie, but they dont want to say that the 4 Regions were existing right up to day that Ironsi died and that it was Gowon who abolished all 4 of them, stripped them of resource control and fical responsibility that are the core tenets of true federalism.

Ironsi is being vilified for being an Igbo man while those who came after him(Military heads of state) did far much worse, are not because they military rulers from the North.

2. What Gowan did or did not do doesn't change the fact that Ironsi on his own without the blessing and approval of the supreme military council introduced the unification decree to abolish federalism in favor of a republic with power in the center instead of the regions.

The punishment for coups and sedition is death or capital punishment which Ironsi did not carry out because of tribalism and the fact that Gowan did not do anything doesn't change the fact that Ironsi was appointed to deal with the issue and he did not which led to the counter-coup and the program in the North.
