Hello please help me answer this question,will 18% for 364days for primary market yield same amount as secondary market 18% for 310days for like 1million?.. if no.. how do u calculate the difference??
No.

364 days
=======
I = PTR/36500 = 1,000,000*364*18/365*100 = 6552000000/36500 = 179,506.85

310 days
=======
I = PTR/36500 = 1,000,000*310*18/365*100 = 5580000000/36500 = 152,876.71

pls explain true yield better. i dont understand
This was explained by some guys here way back.

See this and the source link below:

Question: I highly appreciate your enlightening and inspirational writeups in the Punch Newspaper. I have come across the term ‘true yield’ in treasury bills which is usually higher than the actual rate. Please can you through more light on this?

Answer: Thanks for your question. To understand true yield in treasury bills, you need to place it side by side with other money market instruments like fixed deposits whereby you earn interest upon maturity. With treasury bills, you earn interest upfront, that means what you actually invest is less than the face value, hence your true yield calculation is based on the actual amount invested.

To further clarify, I will illustrate with an investment of N1Million for 364 days, fixed deposit vs treasury bills, assuming a 10% rate of return.

Starting with fixed deposits, your interest (I) in one year amounts to:

I = P x T x R/100 (where P is your sum invested, T is time in years and R is interest rate)

So here goes:

I = 1,000,000 x 1 x 10/100 = 100,000.

In addition, you will be charged a withholding tax of 10% bringing your true yield to 9% (90,000)

For treasury bills, your upfront interent comes to the same thing:

I = 1,000,000 x 1 x 10/100 = 100,000.

This will be returned to you as interest while 900,000 will be booked for one year, so in effect, you are investing 900,000 and not 1,000,000 is your received a cash back of 100,000.

From the formula:

I = P x T x R,

R = I x 100/(P x T)

So your true yield becomes

R = 100,000 x 100/(900,000 x 1) = 11.11%

Please note that the actual time is 364/365 days. I used 1 to simplyfy the calculations. If you were calculation for a 91 day tenor, the time T would be 91/365 and for a 182 days tenor, 182/365.

Your yield becomes even higher if you reinvest your upfront interest instead of consuming it.

Pls why do people still key into TB at 17% or thereabaut while money market fund is 18.62 for Stanbic and 19.13% for fbn. Still mmf compounds quarterly which is another advantage against TB or is there anything i do not understand abaut them? pls explain
There is what is called true yield. If your money is a bit high, then TB is the best but if your money na the kobo kobo type, then you can do MMF.

Hey Guys!

I submitted my application today (First Bank) and my account was debited immediately.

My confussion is no interest was paid, rather they took the whole sum i invested.

What should i do?
Nothing. If you are successfully, your upfront interest will be credited back to the same account.

You guys should advise me on what to do.
The treasury bill officer asked where i got the info that there is going to be an auction on Thursday. I told him CBN website.
He told me that there won't be an auction this Thursday because its done bi-weekly..Nevertheless he advised i submit my application ; which I intend to do tomorrow

Please am safe with this option or should I consult another branch ?
Print the TB calendar that was attached here and go and show it to the person. It was last week that there was uncertainty because there was no calendar. The calendar is out now. It is not compulsory that TB is done from your branch. Go to another branch to cross check.

the dollar bond thingy has not even been approved (or has it?)

So whose bidding that low? On what premise?

MPR has not changed (and wont till january)..

Crude price has not reached 65dollars self..

so whatELSE is causing the sudden drop?
You have a point. Let us see the rates from other banks as i do not want to believe that the banks have formed a TB Union so as to be bidding at about the same rate.

Who has the rates for GTB and First Bank?.

It is not banks o. Since announcement by the government to finance TB with dollar bonds, people here have been saying that rates will start dropping and that people should lock in for the long term. So it has started happening. Moreover, inflation rate is dropping.

If you still want to stay with your first bank, you don't need to open another account.

All you need do is to do your transactions through another branch where your account officer will not see you and don't act like a newbie when you meet the Treasury Bills officer.

You see, many people cause the hostilities they encounter when they want to start doing Treasury Bills by informing their accounts officer probably because they are not aware that it does not pay him and the bank for you to exit savings or fixed deposit for Treasury Bills.

When you want to exit fixed deposit for Treasury Bills, you will be doing yourself a lot of harm by telling your accounts officer your real intentions. Just tell him that you are no longer interested in fixed deposits and want your money in savings for savings interests only so that you can take it within minutes anytime you need it without going to the bank to fill and sign papers and do your Treasury Bills through another bank
This one is a long story. Just tell them that your child is about to been pursued from school and that you need it today today to pay his/her school fees. End of story. cheesy grin

Is it that the CBN is yet to advise the banks?. Does anybody know if CBN has released the TB calendar for primary auction?.

Acidosis:
Nobody can provide the right answers to your question

Truth is you actually may not NEED any, at least, for now.

Why don't you invest further?

Let's assume you pay rent of N300,000/annum. What type of house do you want to build/buy? A N10,000,000 bungalow? How much do you have? Same N10,000,000?

Don't try it! Your N10,000,000 investment on mutual funds, Federal Govt bonds, TBills and the rest will give you an annual interest of (at least) N1,500,000.

N1,500,000-N300,000 (rent) = N1,200,000.
Meaning your N10m savings can help you pay your rent for as long as possible without removing a kobo from your salary or the N10m itself, and you'd still be left with N1,200,000 (free money) to do whatever you want.

You can even use that N1,200,000 along with a new savings plan to start your building project, get a car sometime soon. Mind you, your N10m is still very much intact.

The rule is, do not use all your savings on a luxury (car or house), unless you expect instant returns. It is true that buildings appreciate but how many people build a personal house for the purpose of making profits? This is a country where people cherish inheritance over everything else. Like a taboo, no family wants to sell their personal house in Nigeria even if they're dying of hunger. Those who eventually consider such don't do it until after 40 years or more (when the owner must have departed this earth).
You nailed it.

This is what i keep telling people but we are still fixated on this house of a thing. Most people still have the notion that building one's house even in a remote location is the best investment in life. I consider it as tying down capital that could otherwise would have been used for investment. Most people are still fixated on this 'na tenant i wan be for life'.

NL1960, I am not against them making legal money. CBN regulation guides all banking operations. They are free to make money on the primary auctions based on the fees, commissions etc but not to make spread more so if other banks are not doing that. For secondary sales they are making as they want because they determine the sales price to the investor. Can you imagine how much money they make on the TB volume basehuh?
The blame for that should go to the CBN that changed the rules to 50m minimum. With 50m, you can specify your own rate. Anything less than that, you are at the mercy of the banks. The bank can easily refused doing TB for a person saying that you do not have the minimum amount of 50m specified by CBN. The 50m minimum gave the upper hand to the banks. I got 18.1 from GTB. If i was doing 50m, i would have specified my own rate. Btw, do you know if GTB bids at that rate in order to avoid not succeeding in the auction?. Remember it is an auction. If GTB comes back and tells you for instance that they bidded 18.8 and failed, iam sure you will want to cut their heads for failing. grin

Hello GT customers, please don't panic about your investment not showing on your internet banking platform, it's the least of things that should worry you. It's a system glitch and you will wàke up one day to see it again. Am sure you would have received an electronic debit àlert and possibly investment statement. One thing you should ensure is to get your investment certificate always done on their letter head. I am a gtb customer for more than 10yrs and deal in TB with them since some years now so I have experienced several including this one.

However, I stopped dealing in TB with them because they started playing games. Example, in the last auction they offered 364days to investors at 18.1% as mentioned here while stanbic offered 18.28% thereabout. That's a big gap, it appears they are making some spread on investors fund because I do not see reason why they would bid this low at 18.1% when the last marginal rate from upper week's bid was about 18.5%.
Haba Oga, na only you wan chop alone?. Allow them also chop small now so that they can pay salaries and not sack workers. grin

there is something I noticed about GTb rate it has never exceeded 18.1%,since the beginning of this year.is this on purpose or they trade above this rate and 'hijack' the excess above that for their company gain.
I had to start using Stanbic when it was becoming consistent,who else has noticed it
I equally use Stanbic. I had the option of moving the funds to Stanbic but decided against it as the difference is not much. Stanbic is my main bank. I opened the GTB account for a purpose and when the amount was substantial, i decided to use it for TB with them while i still continue the purpose.
