Frankenstein: Many countries in Europe and Asia can't manufacture drugs too. It takes billions of dollars to develop drugs and vaccines. Nigeria is just 54, and pharmaceutical companies spend well over 15 years to develop one single drug, now do the math.

We're a third world country. We shouldn't be thinking of developing antiviral drugs at this stage. Let's upgrade our dilapidated facilities first.

The outbreaks in these countries are bad currently, but for the future, we can look at Uganda as a model. The first outbreak in that country, beginning in 2000, resulted in 425 cases and 224 deaths. The second outbreak in 2008 resulted in 149 cases and 37 deaths. In 2011, they had a single case with no secondary spread. In 2012, 11 cases and 4 deaths. 2012, 6 cases and 3 deaths. It’s probably impossible to stop Ebola from spilling over into the human population, but Uganda has done a great job responding. They are able to do early detection of suspected cases in their biosafety level 4 lab in Gulu.

They alert local authorities if something is suspected, then send a task force to assist with containment. They communicate effectively with the public about what they can do, and how effective treatment in hospitals can lower the mortality rate. They work with community leaders when a quarantine needs to be put in place.

These things can all be employed in West Africa as well, but it takes time and a lot of commitment to get such networks up and running. We need this cooperation as much as we need PPE and even more than we need “secret serums,” because it is only with prevention of new cases that this epidemic will finally die out.

oluafolabi: Mumu. There is no money to be made from Ebola that's why big pharmaceutical companies aint investing in the research for the cure. Pharmaceutical companies still make tons of money from Cancer (which still doesn't have any cure) and HIV drugs. So did US create cancer too? Stop thinking from your but'thole.

ghananotnaija: It is now too late for Africa to develop an Ebola drug on our own. It takes years for the drug development process to bear fruit. Furthermore, there is probably not enough trained personnel and facilities to undergo this development. Only God can save us now. May God soften oyinbo's hearts so that they will release us the Ebola drug.

onetrack: Then why do western organizations continue to vaccinate Africans and provide mosquito nets? The population of Africa has quadrupled in the past 60 or 70 years due to western health care! If the west has been trying to decrease or eliminate the African population then they have done a terrible job of it because the population is exploding thanks to the west. And Ebola is not a good way to reduce the population because it works too slowly and it can be avoided with some precautions because it is not airborne. If Ebola is the west's way of reducing population then they get a failing grade!
