The University of Jos, has received an Eight Million Dollar ($8 Million) grant from the World Bank to establish an African Centre of Excellence on Phytomedicine Research and Development (ACEPRD). The centre is strongly committed to excellence in research on the production of modern drugs from plants. Research will be focused on different African leaves, roots and plants so as to extract their medicinal contents for the use of human beings. The Centre is a collaborative effort of researchers in the faculties of Pharmaceutical and Natural Sciences with an excellent track record in this area of research and development. Members of ACEPRD’s impressive track record for research in this area has led to the production of several drugs for use in Nigeria including - anti-hypertension, anti-diabetes, anti-malaria drugs and anti snake venom.

Professor John C Aguiyi ( Centre Director) works along with Professor J.C Okwuasaba as Deputy Centre Director and a number of unit Heads in the following core areas of research:

Plant Science
Biotechnology
Formulation and Production

Centres of Excellence

The African Network for Drugs and Diagnostics Innovation (ANDI) has concluded its annual stakeholders meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with the recognition of 32 African institutions as ANDI Centres of Excellence in health innovation.

The ANDI centres of excellence are spread across the five sub-regions of Africa and are conducting research and development; and innovation activities on drugs, diagnostics, vaccines, medical devices and traditional medicines. They will implement ANDI projects and capacity building on the continent.

Pharmacist Benjamin Amodu was recently conferred with Lifetime Achievement Award by the African Leadership Magazine.

Amodu has done research and developed drugs that can manage or cure a lot of sicknesses. Some of his drugs have gotten approval from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

Speaking with Daily Sun, Amodu noted that knowledge is the fortress that protects mankind from the tyranny of ignorance adding that ignorance was the dagger that pierced the soul of truth.

'For a man to fight for freedom, then he must strive to know. For he that knows, understands the way to liberty in expressing what he wants. If the paths to freedom are blocked by the tyranny of force, at least he still has a say and he will always be heard. Thus, knowledge is the light of freedom and freedom is a child of justice for justice is a pendulum that swings the banner of truth. But for a man to move from one stage to the other, then the realities that formed his character in decisions and actions must move from the status of tolerance to the zeal of change.'

Benjamin Amodu is a name to behold, but the man Ben Amodu as known today is an episode in the page of Nigeria Pharmaceutical history. It may be a vain venture for one to try planting a tree where grasses do not grow. But here, we have a man who has grown whole forest of change in a field where change is conservatively static and social order is defined by primordial identity. His compromise in life goes beyond the fear of the unknown, rise above the conception of divinity and sometimes flow in the opposite direction of popular culture.

Saddened by the consequences of avoidable deaths in Nigeria as precipitated by the incidence of wasting diseases like cancer, diabetes, tuberculosis, ulcer, sickle cell anaemia, this man deprived his body to satisfy his mind. In the search for knowledge and in the practice of wisdom he faced the challenges of unusual contradictions, common only to those who seek the truth in form and order, drawing analysis on the way things appear and the way they really are. The character he bears in high value does not hang on him on temporary contest, but dwelled in him on permanent contract.

In the purity of his thoughts, the freedom of his imagination and the vindication of his conscience he found great fulfillment that transcends beyond mere judgement of material evaluation. To him, success does not lie in the judgement of the eyes but in the contentment of the soul. To a king who acquires much, same to a servant who has naught. He considers happiness as the soul of achievement, this he found in the dawn of his aspirations, when the light of fulfillment illuminates the path of his dream.

The story of Ben Amodu is that of prolific creative achievement, versatility and resourcefulness coated in absolute wonders and admirations. How else can you describe the life of this man who in the unquenchable thirst for experience is today an authority in the pharmaceutical, legal and administrative world? In calculated strides, this man combined all these with natural intelligence to carve a niche for himself in the circle of nation builders. You therefore cannot deny him the firm understanding of the legal implications of different policies and their effects on the civil service. His understanding of the political system in Nigeria tied to a solid understanding of the Nigeria healthcare delivery system and its component element and a very vast experience in the Federal Civil Service adds to his excellent understanding of the public sector rules and procedures in Nigeria.

With great number of strides in pharmaceutical research and development, Amodu can be said to be an enigma going by the landmark achievements in undertaking research in herbal treatments/management for HIV/AIDS, sickle cell anaemia, ulcer and tuberculosis, a treatment from food for lowering BP which has powerful libido enhancing effect and a powerful multi-herbal preparations for treating diabetes, including the management/treatment of the following diseases, malaria, menstrual irregularities/pain, menopausal symptoms, cancer, fibroid, hypertensions, diabetes, pain and all pains in associated diseases, diseases of unknown origin, general wellness; healthy state maintenance, stress, sleep disorder, low vision, vitality, prostate enlargement, anti-aging etc. all clinically certified by the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD).

It is worth noting that Amodu has developed 12 anti-cancer recipes and a malaria vaccine all with Nigeria's origin with Igala indigenous herbal combinations which are undergoing the scientific analysis at National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development, Idu, Abuja. 2 years ago, I nearly cried when I couldn't get Nigerians to donate for scholarships to give some LASG govt-run highschool kids (who had built systems to recycle plastics into energy or reusable materials). I couldn't get people to volunteer to refurbish a school in Ajegunle. I struggled to find people willing to sign up to organise a summer teaching camp for any child, priviledged or under-priviledged (so as to teach them more than our obsolete education syllabus). Nigerians would either want to hear gist of what I was saying, then send bc or tweet and clap for themselves that that had achieved much or would happily tell me while those schemes would fail, without offering solutions.

Seriously, China should come and colonise us. Africans are helpless, foolish children, we don't understand freedom or how to use it. We certainly are not worthy of the resources God has given us. And even worse, we are shamelessly happy about our ignorance.

Frankenstein: We have research centres in Nigeria. But they are not many and funding is little because diseases like cancer and birth defects are not really a major problem in Nigeria. We are still 54 years old, suffered a lot of setbacks during the military regime and currently racing to catch up with countries that got developed decades ago.
We will still get there —having topnotch research centers, but first we have to fix power supply, solve unemployment issues and boost our standard of living.

The W.H.O. and American FDA Have Issued Joint Statement That:

(1) Nigerian Doctor rumoured to be cured of Ebola was NOT cured of Ebola because the doctor NEVER had Ebola. (Initial test result was a “FALSE POSITIVE” which occurs in 1 out of every 150 tests).

(2) U.S. FDA warned U.S. firms for targeting African nations and falsely marketing “dietary supplements” as Ebola cure. USA threatened penalties

(3) W.H.O./FDA issued “Confidential NOTICE” to Nigerian Health Minister, Oyebuchi Chukwu, for endorsing an unproven U.S. nutritional supplement” and "thereby promoted false rumours of an Ebola cure." (WHO threatened to block Health Minister’s accreditation if he spread false rumours again)

(4) W.H.O. affirmed its ruling this week that the experimental drug, ZMapp, can be used on Ebola victims where available. WHO stated categorically that ZMapp is NOT a cure for Ebola and that EBOLA HAS NO CURE.

WHO’s “Confidential Notice” condemned Mr. Chukwu as “irresponsible” for saying that unidentified Nigerian scientist living overseas had arranged for Nigeria to get experimental medicine. Chukwu identified it as "NanoSilver,” a supplement offered U.S. firm, Natural Solutions Foundation, NSF.

FURTHER, THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION SAID THAT:
(1): NanoSilver is NOT accredited by FDA. It's products are "dietary supplements, NOT DRUGS" and has NOT been tested by FDA
(2): NanoSilver is for sale on a website along with India Hemp (marijuana) oil, ear candles, and chocolate. (LOL. Tufiakwa!!!!)
(3): Natural Solutions Foundation is NOT an accredited science laboratory
(4): On July 20, 2014, NSF’s medical director, Dr. Rima E. Laibow, posted an Open Letter to Presidents of Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Ghana claiming that NanoSilver cured Ebola. Dr. Libow claimed to have addressed 47 African health ministers at a 2007 conference and to be in touch with West African governments and their advisers. W.H.O. said THESE CLAIMS ARE FALSE. Dr. Laibow HAS NEVER BEEN TO AFRICA.

(5): The New York Times repeatedly has tried to contact Dr. Laibow who claimed that her drug cured Nigerian doctor but Dr. Laibow is nowhere to be seen. Agents of the U.S. FDA are hunting for her.
(6): Assistant Director of W.H.O., Dr. Marie-Paule Kieny, said fraudsters are targeting African nations “AND SUCCEEDING BECAUSE OF LARGE NUMBER OF RELIGIOUS PEOPLE ANXIOUS TO CLAIM MIRACLE HEALING.”
(7): FDA’s Dr. Caplan said the same people who marketed fake HIV cure-drugs to Africans for 30 years are now marketing fake Ebola cure to Africans “BECAUSE OF THE STUPIDITY OF AFRICAN RELIGIOUS GROUPS WHO ARE TEMPTED TO CLAIM MIRACLE CURE.”

MsNas: I don't know what brand of Christianity they practice in Nigeria and Africa. I am a muslim, but I have been with my christian friends to church couple of times here. When the offering bowl is passed around, people aren't afraid to drop 25cents or 50cents into them. Most of the money goes to missionary work for their pastors in Asia and Africa anyways. Their pastor is not a full-time pastor, he has a day job. Yet, they paid almost $8,000 for a Nigerian guy who had monetary issues and could not pay his school fees.

Their own brand of worship is different too. Churches are sound proof, no jumping up and down. No excessive display. If one day I decided to every be a Christian, it's because I see the manifestation of true christianity here, not all the "come and see me" christianity they practice in Nigeria. Heaven help us.

We know the names of the zmapp researchers, we know their lab, we know their sponsors, we have access to their previous research articles online, we have access to the results of their animal trials. Everything is online. But who is the maker of this nanosilver? What is his name? Who are his researchers? Where are his research articles? You don't know but you want someone's husband, someone's wife and kids to drink nanosilver. Doesn't it sound ridiculous to you?

At the end of 2009, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR –Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung) recommended


"to avoid the use of nanoscaled silver or nanoscaled silver compounds in foods and everyday products ... until such time that the

data are comprehensive enough to allow a conclusive risk assessment which would ensure that products are safe for consumer health."

1 The President of the Institute endorsed this position in a press release in June 2010 stressing that nanosilver has no place in food, textiles or cosmetics.
