Politics / N5000 Note: Don’t Disgrace Me, Jonathan Begs Mark by not2long(m): 7:07pm On Sep 20, 2012
At a meeting Tuesday night, President Goodluck Jonathan begged Senate President, David Mark, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, not to disgrace him over the controversial plan to introduce a denomination of 5000 naira.

A source in the Presidency and other sources close to Mr. Mark and Mr. Tambuwal told SaharaReporters that the president made the plea during a meeting with the legislative duo shortly after the two chambers of the legislature passed resolutions demanding that Mr. Jonathan rescind the authorization he gave to Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, the Governor of Central Bank, to print N5,000 note.

The president reportedly granted the approval five months ago without the knowledge of lawmakers.

One of our sources said that the president felt that, should he retreat now, he would be perceived as weak and easily intimidated by members of the National Assembly and Nigerians opposed to the introduction of the naira denomination. The policy has been roundly criticized by many Nigerian groups, including labor activists, church leaders, and economists.

A source familiar with the meeting told SaharaReporters that Mr. Jonathan cajoled Mr. Mark and Mr. Tambuwal. “He kept saying to the Senate President and Speaker that he felt he was being dictated to. He kept saying that the National Assembly and some Nigerians were out to intimidate him. Then he looked at them [Mr. Mark and Mr. Tambuwal] and said, ‘Please, please, don’t disgrace me.’”

Mr. Jonathan specifically asked the legislative officials to ensure that the two chambers withdraw their motions on the issue.

A source close to Mr. Mark told SaharaReporters that the two legislators showed little sympathy to the president’s pleas. “They [Senate President and the Speaker] told President Jonathan that they were in a better position to tell him about the feelings of Nigerians towards the policy,” said the source.

He added that the legislators counseled Mr. Jonathan to abandon his support for the proposed currency denomination so as not to risk more battering to his image. “They told Mr. President to act without delay in putting a halt to the plan,” the source said.

Politics / Oyo State Governor, Ajimobi, 15 Aides, On Olympics Jamboree In London by not2long(m): 12:23am On Jul 30, 2012
A few days after the Oyo State government sent wives of state legislators on a wasteful jamboree to the United Kingdom, the executive arm took its turn today, the governor and about 15 commissioners and assistants jetting out on a parallel $250,000 , publicly-funded trip to the Olympics Games.

SaharaReporters learnt that the pretence of the governor, whose state recently suffered a devastating flood that rendered many citizens homeless, is that his team will be hunting for foreign investors at the Olympics.

In real life, the Oyo state contingent will merely be enjoying the Olympics and shopping in London, SaharaReporters was informed.

The governor is a member of the Action Congress Party of Nigeria (ACN), the leading opposition party in Nigeria, which has a sizable following in the Southwest region. The party is often quick to condemn wasteful spending by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ruling elite but typically ducks when its operatives engage in the same level of criminal conduct.

Only today, the ACN publicity secretary, Lai Mohammed, issued a statement asking PDP chairman Bamanga Tukur to resign from office on account of his son's trial for oil subsidy fund fraud, but the party has failed to prevail on the Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Ikuforiji, who is standing trial before a federal High Court in Lagos for stealing and laundering N500 million, to resign.

Among others, flood is a perennial problem in Oyo State. In just one instance last year, over 100 people were killed. And a few days ago, a temporary wooden bridge in Apete, Ido Local Government Area, was washed away, cutting off several communities.

Critics say that rather than fix these problems, Ajimobi has chosen to idle away in London and burn valuable development funds.

A Political Science teacher at the University of Ibadan told SaharaReporters that Ajimobi has turned out a huge disappointment to the people of Oyo state and that he would not be surprised if citizens soon start saying they preferred former governor, Alao Akala.

"The expectations that Ajimobi was going to improve on governance in Oyo state have been totally dashed,” he said.

“You hardly can see any presence of governance in the state except in ostentatious lifestyles of government officials and senseless jamborees.

Politics / There’s A Grand Christian Conspiracy Against Nigerian Muslims, JNI Claims by not2long(m): 11:03pm On Jul 18, 2012
Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), the umbrella organization for Nigerian Muslims, today stated that there is a grand Christian conspiracy against the country’s Muslims.

The organization made the claim as a part of a reaction to rocket attacks on the Islamic School in Bukuru, Plateau State on Tuesday morning. The umbrella body said Muslims would leave everything to Almighty God.

JNI also asserted that Muslims were being killed around Gonin Gora, in Kaduna State, and accused the government of taking no cogent action at any level.

The group’s claims are contained in an email sent to SaharaReporters by its General Secretary, Khalid Abubakar Aliyu. The statement was titled “ROCKETS FIRED AT AN ISLAMIC SCHOOL IN JOS SOUTH L.G.C. OF PLATEAU STATE”.

The text of the statement is below:

“Following unfolding scenarios with respect to the rocket launching on the Muslim Community of Bukuru, in Plateau State by irate Christian community as reported to us, we make this release with pains and grief that such a thing is happening but [the] majority of media outfits in Nigeria and beyond are not airing it. It is manifest that there is [a] conspiracy of silence against Islam and the Muslims in Nigeria. However, we leave our affairs to Allah, the Most High.

“Nonetheless, we call on the Plateau State Government and by extension, the Federal Government under the auspices of JTF to be cautious and handle with utmost intelligence the issue of the 48 hour ultimatum given to the Fulanis to leave the Plateau. A second thought should be given to the matter and a more realistic and proactive mechanism that will ensure the protection of lives and properties (sic) on the Plateau should be aptly put in place, because with recent developments, there seems to be a deliberate attempt to expel the Muslims from the Plateau.
“Moreover, it is more apparent that the Gonin Gora settlement of Kaduna State has done more havoc to the Muslims in Nigeria and innocent travelers plying the road to and fro Abuja but regrettably, that has not called for any ultimatum to the suburb. Why the selective justice? Why are the Muslims in Nigeria manhandled. Why are the Muslims never given fear hearing in Nigeria?

“We make bold to say, that Nigerian Muslims are worried about unfolding happenings on the Plateau, Muslims are concerned about the killing of innocent lives at Gonin Gora and yet nothing practically seen ??done by any tier of government. In the light of all the aforesaid, we pray that Allah, the Most High will forgive those that lost their lives, and grant us peace and tranquility in Borno, Plateau, Yobe States and Nigeria at large.”

President Goodluck Jonathan today admitted, for the first time, that his government ground to a halt before it could take the first step, and he blamed Boko Haram for it.

Mr. Jonathan made the confession at the 60th National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party.

"During [the electoral] campaign, our emphasis was more on job creation, power but now what worries us most is security,” he said. "This is because you must be alive before you will eat food”

He described security as “very, very fundamental,” saying, “If you are not safe, you can't even think of hunger because a dead person does not need food.”

The President told senior party members that although he had promised to focus on job creation and power, he had been forced to change government policy to focus on security due to the activities of the violent militant sect.

In convoluted remarks, he said, "If you look at this issue of Boko Haram, for the past three weeks, except the incident in Plateau State, which of course is unfortunate but has nothing to do with Boko Haram, we will continue to work with Governor Jonah Jang and other leaders from the state to make sure that we resolve the crisis in Plateau State. That has nothing to do with Boko Haram.

"But outside that, we would see that there are some trends, there is some hope and God willing, the issue of Boko Haram will also come down."

Mr. Jonathan did not comment on his promise in April to vanquish the militants by June, a promise which he did not fulfill. He did not apologize for that, either.

“Did Boko Haram also persuade him not to give a damn about corruption, for which both his government and his party are the most famous?” a political analyst asked in Abuja today. “If he says Boko Haram brought him to a standstill, did they also tell him he should not provide personal example, such as declaring his assets or telling his wife it is a shame to live in Abuja and claim a job in Abuja she cannot possibly honour?”

A newspaper columnist, commenting on Mr. Jonathan’s confession, reminded SaharaReporters that it was only recently at the “Media Chat” that Jonathan told Nigerians they will start enjoying his success in 2013.

“The cows are coming home to roost now,” he said. “Boko Haram did not stop him from buying himself executive jets or budgeting nearly N1billion for feeding himself or repeatedly traveling with hundreds of hangers-on to foreign capitals to collect huge estacode payments. He is now telling Nigerians the militants are the ones stopping him from fulfilling his electoral promises!”
