Politics › Addis Ababa Light Rail Test Running Begins by notobs(op): 7:55pm On Feb 06, 2015*. Modified: 8:31pm On Feb 06, 2015 |
ETHIOPIA: Celebrations on February 1 marked the official launch of test running on the Addis Ababa light rail line, ahead of the planned start of revenue services in May. Attendees at the launch included the Prime Minster, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs along with thousands of city residents. They were able to ride on the 9 km Kaliti – Meskel Square section of the network, which will have two lines running 16·9 km north-south from Menelik Square to Kaliti and 17·4 km east-west from Ayat to Tor Hailoch, with a 2·7 km shared section between Lideta and Meskel Square. Mayor Driba Kuma said the US$75m project was ‘a testimony of fruitful journey towards Ethiopian renaissance’. China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group began construction in January 2012 under a contract signed in June 2009. China’s Export-Import Bank provided loans to cover 85% of the US$475m cost. Huawei supplied telecoms and fare collection equipment, while CNR Changchun has supplied 41 three-section 70% low-floor light rail vehicles. These are designed to run in pairs at up to 70 km/h, and have tinted windows and rubber components specified to resist premature aging from the effects of strong sunlight at altitudes of 2 400 m. Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn thanked the city’s residents for their patience during the construction of the line. He said that as well as solving transport problems in the city and reducing carbon emissions, knowledge and technology transfers involved would enable the country to use its own human resources in future rail projects. Minister of Foreign Affairs Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said construction of the Addis Ababa – Djibouti rail project was also well underway, having crossed the Ethiopia-Djibouti border four weeks ago. http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/urban/single-view/view/addis-ababa-light-rail-test-running-begins.html

FighterPilot: Oil price has never reached this low of $46 a barrel. The economists have also said it will remain so low for over three years and will affect OPEC countries badly.
Lier, oil account to over 80% of Nigeria's revenues and makes over 40% of your GDP. And what were the percentages, 5yrs or even 2 years Ago? |

The oil will remain low for over three years. Oil price is never steady it rises and it falls. Those that pretend to know how to predict its rising or falling are in the category of our own charlatan TB joshua of the synagogue church of all nations, whom you SA worship as a God. And By the way Nigerian economy is increasingly diversified and daily oil and gas is playing less role in our overall economy. If you were not on Nairaland daily pouring invective against Nigeria you would have known this. |

Nigerian economy is number one in Africa, population #1, business/entrepreneurial drive #1, military (real) not mercenary #1,billionaires #1, foreign direct investment in Africa #1, Remittance from Abroad to Africa #1etc and which ever aspect we haven't taken the #1 position we are about to in the next few years. Only an uninformed can mention the wicked Akpabio alongside legendary Amaechi. and Okorocha is the best governor in Nigeria. we all know his good works in Imo State such that imolites are paving the way for his second term! ha EFCC will begin their work may 29th midnight on May 30th the likes of Okorocha and amaechi will be arraigned for stealing the commonwealth of their people. Name one capital project that okorocha has done in imo state even with the highest rate of bank loans in South East. Building roundbout with no roads to get to the roundabout does not count. |

It has kicked out many of your paper billionaires out of the Forbes richest leaving you with only four after SA and Egypt, just only months after you claimed top spot with paper billionaires. It has also slashed down your GDP to less than $500 billion. Anyway since you don't move with time, those news will be revealed to you soon. When the list for 2015 is released until then Nigeria leads.I know you will Not like this because you are a Nigeria Hater but Nigerian Economy Is just Starting to grow and there is enormous room for growth in Nigerian Economy unlike an Ageing, Saturated and unhealthy economy of SA with a trickling growth rate. Clown Nigerian Tycoons Lead Africa's 50 Richest To Gains In 2014Reported by Zina Moukheiber and Mfonobong Nsehe, with additional reporting from FORBES AFRICA, Christopher Helman, Chase Peterson-Withorn and Katia Savchuk. Edited by Kerry A. Dolan with Abram Brown and Luisa Kroll For the first time in the four years that FORBES has been tracking Africa’s richest, Nigeria bests South Africa. At the top yet again is cement tycoon Aliko Dangote of Nigeria, joined on the list of Africa’s 50 Richest by 12 other countrymen. In comparison South Africa claims 11 spots, down from 14 a year ago. Nigeria is showing its strength, having earned commendations for its efforts to snuff out Ebola in the country, which Dangote helped fund — and despite a recent drop in oil prices. The Richest Man in Africa: Aliko Dangote The Richest Man in Africa: Aliko Dangote There are four new billionaires on the list: Orji Uzor Kalu of Nigeria, Tony Elumelu of Nigeria, Theophilus Danjuma of Nigeria and King Mohammed VI of Morocco. That brings the number of billionaires on the list to 28, up one from 27 last year. Three billionaires on last year’s list are no longer members of the 10-figure club: Vimal Shah of Kenya is off the list, replaced by his father Bhimji Depar Shah at a lower net worth. Abdulsamad Rabiu of Nigeria dropped below $1 billion due to ceased operations at his floating cement terminal in Nigeria. (Note: In early December, additional information from Rabiu led Forbes to revise our estimate of his net worth back up to $1.1 billion.) his And South African mining mogul Desmond Sacco dropped to a net worth of $680 million, down from $1.4 billion last year, because of a sharp decline in the share price of his mining firm Assore Group. For the full list, see www.forbes.com/africa-billionairesI will take forbes list of billionaires over wiki list anyday. agaugust: Foool
You move half of Nigerian army into only 3 states and expose the remaining 34 states and Abuja to infiltration by insurgents. Garrison is a standard worldwide recognized militray strategy, you cover all your land.
Boko Haram has no uniform, they wear civilian clothes 99%. You can outnumber them but you cannot identify most of them the way they can identify Nigerian army uniforms, you don't know what COIN war means. LOL.
Anyway its 30,000 men on both sides so we don't outnumber them in NE war zone.
Chad and Cameroon have to enter Nigeria for their own good or else they will be in danger once Bokos cross border, see what Bokos did to Cameroonian civilians today, ran from Nigerian town Gamborou, entered Cameroonian town Fotokol and began slicing the throats of innocent women and children with knives.
If Chad and Cameroon refuses to fight inside Nigeria, they will have Bokos spreading out like water floods inside their countries and blood will flow there! The Chadians you are praising are not helping Nigeria, they are helping themselves from becoming the new victims.
If they want to chase away 20,000 killers from Zimbabwe and you were informed to cross into Zimbabwean border and block them from entering South Africa in anger, will you say no.....let the 20,000 killers enter inside South Africa first and spread around, then we will be looking for them to fight them?
Whichever way you guys think and write rubbish on this forum, all intelligent military officers around the world have agreed that the best way to crush 30,000 insurgents is to move against them from all borders and squeeze them into the centre.
These 3 African countries have used the best military strategy in the world, and the future generation of West and Central Africans will thank them for it.
Who cares about the senseless opinion of Southies of Nairaland? We talking about winning a war for Africa against terrorism that even NATO super powers failed to defeat in Afghanistan after 13 years of hi-tech firepower war by USA and UK against Taliban . This is the crux of the matter. dont fail to add the most advanced army known to man in this 21st century employing the "CUT AND RUN" strategy in the face of rising insurgency in Iraq. Iraq is still boiling with insurgency today. The US and NATO allies has bungled Iraq and Afghanistan, and yet they have the temerity to criticize Nigerian handling of boko haram insurgency, The question is why haven't they won their war against insurgency in iraq and Afghanistan after 2 decades of fighting there with the most sophisticated arms/army in the world? Boko Haram insurgency is 5yrs old and Nigeria is doing its best to crush it by self effort even in the face of arms embargo by the US. |

agaugust: The world sees only four losers here but Nigeria is not on the losers list.
1. South Africa that cannot defeat ordinary Rhino Poachers dribbling SAAF and SANDF around in Mandela's homeland of Kruger Park until Botswana came to their rescue and Jacob Zuma is hiding 500 Southie Rhinos inside Botswana after accepting national defeat by Rhino Poachers.
South Africa that paid American special forces to invade South Africa in the eyes of the whole world and hunt down illiterate Rhino Poachers who for many years till today reign supreme as modern day Shaka Zulu in the black homeland.
Same South Africa that abandoned C.A.R. Bangui at jet speed with Seleka pursuing SANDF Elite paratroopers as they ran faster than Springboks.....while rag tag Chadian army stood firm and kept hope alive for helpless civilians in that war torn nation .
2. Chad, a country that sent 2,000 soldiers to fight Boko Haram in a small deserted Nigerian border town of Gamboru. Chadian rag tag army of nincompoops entered Gamboru in one direction failing to split in military tactical mode and block escape routes of Boko Haram. Fought Bokos, for few hours, 16 Chadian soldiers dead 21 wounded.....claimed they killed all the 200 Bokos, chanted victor songs like Babarians, deceiving the world news media while the same 'dead' Bokos actually manuevered and outsmarted the big 2,000 force Chadian army, drove trucks across border into Cameroon, left Chadiand behind in a fake victory celebration, entered Foktokal, beat up Cameroonian elite special forces like herdsmen beat up cows, went ahead and dagger sliced open the throats of 100 innocent Cameroonian women and children, rampaged and bloody wounded another 500 civilian Cameroonians, while Chad's incompetent army was celebrating and granting interviews to world press....history cannot be erased....history is laughing at Chad like a comedian .
3. Cameroon's sloppy wobbly BIR Elite special forces that once claimed to be better than Nigeria...Fools of Fotokol caught sleeping on duty, despatched to early grave by rampaging Boko Harams that escaped under the dull eyes of dull brained Chadian army. BIR watched in horror as Bokos used their Cameroonian citizens to set new record of casualties in 2015...100 dead, 500 bleeding wounded in Cameroon....BIR also burying it's elite troops.....Cameroonian military history goes from bad to worse.
4. @Devluit, praising Chadian army as liberators of Nigeria while the Cameroonians that invited Chad to save them got the opposite of liberation.....eradication on homesoil.
You Devluit as you beat drums and blow trumpet for Chad, 100 Cameroonian ghosts of the dead are looking for your house address, while 500 wounded Cameroonians have vowed to Stone Devluit when their wounds heal and they happen to see you within stoning range.
4 losers in world history, only 4.....the other side is 1 Nigeria winning her war, driving Boko Haram into running Olympics like SANDF displayed speed in the face of Seleka This is funny, but its real fact. |

barracud3r: I don't understand why Nigerian are ignorant. Nigeria is top 10 least developed nation on earth. every country on this earth even sudan, iraq, somalia or Maldives have nice areas. below is Lima,Peru they have a subway. they have skyscrapers ,but the country is still a third world because of the mentality of the inhabitants . why aren't people trooping to Peru? simply because akpabio built 4 long roads and a college foot ball stadium, every one is screaming uncommon transformation. very ignorant . only 4 major roads are tarred ,4 unneeded flyovers , outdated library idea (most developed nations are actually closing down their libraries and getting rid of their phone booths ,since we now have online encyclopedia and information online . cell phone usage ) the inner streets are not tarred , and uyo is just a small town smaller than Compton or Inglewood which are just a section f LA city. This is the problem with Nigeria we use our mouths to destroy whatever we have. If Nigeria built the sudanese, highways, the peruvian tall building and subway you are posting here, you will use your same mouth to say that Los Angeles or New york ones are better or you would say they are not needed in the country at the moment. Your type would look for any excuse to criticize what ever is in your country. The Uyo you are busy condemning, everyone in Nigeria Knows that 8yrs Ago Uyo was akin to a local government Hqts with nothing to boast of, It wasnt even mentioned in the committee of cities in Nigeria, But today its the toast of the country, and very difficult for you to talk about development in Nigeria without mentioning UYO. There is a reason for that! you cannot be smarter than the preponderance view of Nigerians about Uyo. For you to tag 1500km of roads built in 7.5yrs, as 4 long roads is uncharitable and disingenuous I would challenge you to mention how many cities even in the develop societies that build that much roads within a short possible time? Those 4 new flyovers in Uyo that you say are not needed , if you see them Abroad you will be taking pictures of them to post here and ask why Nigerian cant build flyovers like that. A Stadium that has been nominated for a 2014 worlds best stadium of the year is what you dismiss as a college stadium? The library in Uyo is not a conventional library but a digital library connected to several renown libraries the world over. I challenge you to mention the cities that are pulling down even their conventional libraries not to talk of a modern e - library. All Projects that is done in akwa Ibom is of class and hence should be commended. No country builds a city in one day it is a continuous process, all We need is a responsible government that keeps on moving on and i pray the next governor in Akwa Ibom will be like Akpabio. If Uyo could draw attention to it self within just 8yrs due to the good projects in the state then there is hope for Akwa Ibom if this continues and I have every confidence just like Cfan that in the Next 2 decades Nigeria will be a country that people will be linning up for visas if we continue building at the pace that has been done in the last 8 yrs. |

The Minister of Information and Communications, Mr Labaran Maku has expressed excitement over the quality of job being done on the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium under construction by Governor Chibuike Amaechi led-administration in Rivers State, describing it as a great asset not only to Rivers State but to the entire nation The minister, who led the Good Governance Tour team to Rivers State, made the remarks yesterday at the stadium during the teams’ tour of projects in Rivers State. Maku who regretted that the chances of Nigerian hosting the Olympic Games was being marred by the unavailability of stadia that meet Olympic standard, said the Amiesimaka stadium in Rivers State has raised hope of Nigeria in hosting Olympic Games. The information minister who fielded questions from journalists after Governor Amaechi took the team round the stadium said, this is a very standard stadium under development that can be used for Olympic games. He said sports in the present time was attracting so much money such that Nigerians must invest heavily on sports but regretted that the lack of standard sporting facilities was denying the nation the national earning desired in view of the vast potentials the country possesses on sports. Maku commended Governor Amaechi for putting in place such high quality stadium to meet the needs of the state and the nation at large. Governor Amaechi took the team round the stadium, saying virtually all necessary sports in the world could be done in the stadium which has the capacity to accommodate 38,000 persons. Apart from having facilities to contain all sporting activities, the governor said it has 500 public toilets, two Olympic size swimming pools. The governor also explained that the stadium cost N24billion while the entire complex cost the state N31billion and when completed, would create employment opportunity for more Rivers people and Nigerians and help reduce crime in the society. Earlier, Maku and his team who was received at the state Government House yesterday morning, explained that the essence of the tour round the nation was to showcase what development democracy had been able to provide for Nigerians, stressing, that it provides a forum for Nigerians to ask leaders pertinent questions agitating their minds. He assured that the team would be neutral and non-partisan, adding that the team was made up of journalists both local and national as well as civil society organization. The minister who disclosed that the team arrived the state after visiting Cross River, remarked that Rivers State was strategic to the national economy in view of its leading position in the oil and gas , and as the centre point of the South-South geo-political zone. Among the projects visited yesterday in the state by the Good Governance Tour Team were the monorail, Kelsey Harrison Hospital, the Dental & Maxillo Facial Hospital, Ada George Road, a Federal Government Road being constructed by the state as well as Obiri Ikwerre Inter change on East-West Road, another Federal Government concern also being handled by the state. Other projects visited were ongoing projects at the University of Port Harcourt including the Cancer Treatment Centre at University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Syringe Manufacturing Plant, state-owned Primary Health centre at Abalama in Asari Toru Local Government Area, Fish farm in Buguma, new public schools and health centres constructed by the present administration. Buhari remembered the number of the exam he wrote 53 years ago but could not remember who is in possession of his certification.
Before the ruling party will call buhari illiterate they have already carried out a full enquiry on his educational status.
He can go and connive with his school and forge a certificate but he will not succeed because the names of those that sat for waec in that year have already been printed out and handed over to GEJ |

GMB has really shown us he is the CLUELESS ONE really. How can you not have at least a copy of your WASC even when you know is it part of the requirements of vying for the post of the president? You knew your secondary school had a copy and you waited till you were humiliated over the matter before writing to the school? He believed so much that copies are with the Military board and still did not (at least for record purpose) ask that a photocopy be made for him. And finally he scheduled a new conference without still showing a copy of the WASC, telling us that is now of all times that he wrote to his secondary school to help with a copy. Gosh!!! I want to puke! Na this kain person we want vote say na change? Can you be applying for a job and asking your employers to go ask your school for your result? Don't you owe it as a duty to yourself to have your WASC? After contesting the presidential position for 3 consecutive times. GMB is CLUELESS and that is the fact! |

If the gang up against GEJ succeeds the creeks will boil again and nigerian economy will be brought to its knees. The Peace in the creeks is not because of Amnesty but because of jonathan(whom the SS believe is their son, weather he does good or not, Afterall all the leaders from the north and obasanjo from the SW didnt do better, but were allowed to serve their time). if he is denied his 8yrs like the SW had and the north has had 38yrs, the SS will boil to over flow!
The Moderates in the North Knows this, so thats why they will support GEJ for his second term and there after power will shift to the north as equity demands, failure to achieve this balance will lead to dire consequences. |

Fashola: is Tinubus boy, and Tinubu is more experienced politician and will get all and more votes that fashola from the SW and beyond, Fashola could not even install his successor in Lagos, He is a light weight, even the worst governor in the country was able to install their succesors Fashola was not even at the table when the Asiwaju decided who the next lagos governor will be, that speaks volumes about fashola's political influence and where the real power in Lagos and SW lies.
Oby is not a politician but and activist and academic- her activism is not even up to that of the Nigerian gold standard Gani fawehinmi, remember he did not succeed in politics even though he was the most popular and the best activist that Nigeria has ever produced. Oby is a ministerial candidate and not a VP material.
oshimole has too much political baggage remember "Go and die" etc besides he has no political value outside Edo state, the Labour thing is all gone remember he was at war path with Labour in his state, he fired and humiliated teachers and decided to make them take eligibility exams. the labour Union now considers him a pariah. Osihimole will not galvanise the SW, and his influence in the SS is limited to his state and has zero influence in the SE. Excellent analysis. Tinubu is the best possible candidate, General buhari better make this right choice. |

I just read that Gen. Buhari prefers Amaechi as VP, Amaechi is one of the vocal opposition to tinubu within APC, If the general goes with Amaechi, he will alienate the SW voters because the SW governors are mostly Tinubu Boys, they will not be happy with the choice of Amaechi. |

ladi02: The interesting thing is none of these TANoids will choose to live in a PDP state..majority live in APC states cos of the development and job opportunities they have. You are right about my living in APC state, I live in port harcourt and because of APC politics all projects in Rivers state has been abandoned in other to use state funds and my tax money to fund APC primaries and campaign.I cant wait for this APC primaries and flag bearers to be chosen so Amaechi can comeback to rivers state and perform the job i voted for him to do. and hopefully there will be some state funds left to carry out state functions when this is over. But this has nothing to do with living in APC states but on who the best APC VP candidate is. Do you disagree with the choice of Tinubu as the most qualified of all the aspirants? |
