The Midfield: Mikel, few day ago I saw him on clutches with his team at Wembly, yet the coach did not see a good reason to quickly invite players like Rabiu Ibrahim; the same period that Mikel was walking with clutches, Uche and Anichebe were already running and training, yet the coach felt they are not fit enough.

One good team for me is that I will not expect too much from the team, which means I will not be disappointed.

How Nigeria can turn its brain drain to brain gain – Phillip Emeagwali

IN the last 25, 26 years, Philip Emeagwali, the Nigerian born American, world famous computer scientist, who is most times credited with the feat of being a father of the internet, has never set his foot on the Nigerian soil. And he has no apologies or immediate or future plans to visit. Ask him why, and he is unable to proffer any convincing answers.

But as he speaks, you begin to understand: Nigeria is a net brain drain country which is yet to realise that until its squabbling politicians wake up to the fact that they live in a global village where every serious nation attracts the best of brains from every corner of the world and keep them; until they realise that they must begin to explore a “Nigeria without oil” and strenuously begin to focus on educating the young generation and equipping them with the necessary scientific backgrounds to enable them compete globally, Nigeria, which is currently over 200 years behind the developed countries will continue to lag behind, continue to slip into perpetual global irrelevance.

He was a poignant irony of the enchanting gospel he preached at the Delta state government organised Delta Diaspora Direct in Geneva, last week. Why Nigeria and Nigerians delude themselves that Emeagwali is their own, the United States of America, where he went in 1974 in search of intellectual knowledge, is not about to let him go.

Indeed to keep him, the American government got his parents, all their 35 children and grand children to join him in the USA 26 years ago. He became a total brain lost. The simple truth is that America will never allow one of its top scientific brains to venture into a chaotic, unsafe Nigeria. Speaking with him, you cannot but weep for Nigeria.

Yet, none could dispute the truth in his message to Nigeria and Africa: the wealth of the future will be derived from developing the intellectual capital of our children. We must develop “the clay of wisdom”, the innovations of our younger generation: “we must put faith in our younger generation as we look to the future. By reinvesting our petroleum revenues into developing the potential of our children, we free ourselves from the burdens of our past,” he affirms as he speaks to the topic: “Building a Greater Delta State: Perspective on Development through Innovation, Technology and Diasporan Support”.

According to the computing guru, America and the developed world are great today, not because of their petroleum reserves, but because of their unsurpassed intellectual capital, the collective knowledge and wisdom of their people, pointing out that for Nigeria to join the world’s top 20 economies, it should not delude itself that it will be because of its petroleum revenues; “but because of the technological knowledge of future generations.”

Prof. Emeagwali (right) displays a souvenir of the True Face of Delta presented to him by Gov. Uduaghan at the Delta Diaspora Direct (D3) summit held in Geneva, Switzerland, last week.

Nigeria, he posits, must turn its brain drain into brain gain. “Nigeria needs more men and women of ideas, especially technology visionaries and futurists to help its people answer the larger question of who they are and where they want to go (because) the nation that controls critical technologies rules the world.”

For example, with Nigeria now 50 years old and still relying not just on revenues from petroleum resources but indeed on foreign expertise and technology to exploit it, Dr. Emeagwali asks the question: How will Nigeria acquire and control the petroleum technology it needs to dig a hole in the ground to recover its own oil and save 40 percent royalty lost to foreign oil companies? To this he says we must refocus our energy to develop the brain power of our youths. In the immediate, Dr. Emeagwali says, the answer in part, will be brain gain from its diaspora in Europe and America…technology will allow Nigeria to do more with less, without depleting its natural resources.

In human history, he says, technological development and economic growth proceed together and a nation that is second to none in science was second to none in economic power. Hence ‘the grand challenge for African scientists is to make discoveries and inventions that can be domesticated and diffused into the continent’s economy.”

He cites the various developmental strides of America and Europe which are currently powered by their high technological feats to back the call for Nigeria and indeed Africa to wake up its creative genius which the youth embody.

Emeagwali who was keynote speaker at the occasion, says because petroleum is a depleting resource, Nigerians must know that it is our scientific discoveries and technological inventions that will increase humanity’s intellectual capital by creating new knowledge, new products, and new wealth and move Nigeria forward into a top 20 economy.

“Africa can alleviate poverty by forcing the frontiers of science, pushing back the boundaries of what’s possible with technology, climbing the branches of the tree of knowledge, and embarking on a journey with an uncertain future. We cannot bring change without taking risks and without challenging the status quo. Great discoveries and great inventions cannot be made without the risk of great failures. Africa must cross the technological frontier to conquer tomorrow’s challenge.”

Thanking Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta state for the laudable initiative of linking Diaspora Nigerians with the homeland, through the Delta Diaspora Direct, he, however, adviced that the Nigerian Diaspora is a planet-sized think tank, which will allow leaders inside Nigeria to move beyond their collective limits and master new terrains. He then cautioned that the brain drain is Africa’s cold civil war that could leave the continent empty of brains in 50 years. Its effect on Nigeria could be worse than Nigerian-Biafran civil war of the twentieth century.

To Nigerians in diaspora, he says: “Africa needs your vision far more than your knowledge. Africa has more teachers than visionaries but needs more visionaries than teachers. The teacher has his feet on the ground, and his eyes on the ground.”

In concluding the very intellectually engaging talk, the Nigerian American, who still seemingly burns with a great desire to see Nigeria wake up from its slumber, says the future is for us to create, but that we must first outline our vision. “Foot soldiers, not generals, will lead our war against ignorance. The foot soldiers are our one hundred million young Nigerians whose weapon is knowledge.

Their collective intellectual capital will enable them to improve the world and push the human race forward. My vision is for Nigeria to tap into the creativity and innovation of our young people – the people who have the potential to uplift humanity. Technology is all around us; inventing new tools, techniques, and technologies reaffirms humanity’s goal to endlessly search for new knowledge, and to demand more of itself and its people. Let’s do the best we can to make the world better through technology.”

On his part, the Nigerian ambassador to France, Mr. Gordon Harry Bristol, wondered how Nigeria can turn the current, massive brain drain into a brain gain or at least brain circulation. How can we turn this into a comprehensive, effective, balanced and mutually beneficial migratory flows that will also ensure sustainable development?

He argues that “this second depopulation of Africa is more insidious as it entails the loss of the very skilled manpower, often trained in Africa with African resources, to the more developed parts of the world, to the detriment of the continent where their services are most required given its relative backwardness and poverty.

“This is also the case with the Middle East and South Africa where Nigerian professionals, especially medical doctors, have migrated in droves to contribute to the health care systems of their new found societies.”

The ambassador argues that the main challenge in sub-saharan Africa, is how to structure and order the benefits that are derivable from the diaspora. Unlike countries such as Turkey, the Philippines, Algeria, Egypt and Morocco, which have created the structures for doing this, many countries in sub-saharan Africa do not have any structure whatsoever.

Nevertheless, he says that the best way to stem migration is to progressively improve conditions in the countries of origin.

over 10,000 people entered for the training only 400 of us were selected eventually, we graduated on Saturday in a colorful ceremony at the SilverBird Abuja; there is a rumour that another training in Lagos but I cannot verify that information about becos my sister was not selected and I wish that she will be selected in the next training.

About the Nigeria film people; some of them were there for training and most of them fell below expectation, maybe becos they are so engrossed into nollywood, and a month training will not be enough to change their idea of film making, which is why their project that is not expected to go over 5mins eventually lasted well over 30mins.

I saw some great prospect and could see great director and cinematographer in the making, even some actor surpassed my expectation.

I majored in 3D Animation but I learnt new things in film making, I have to work even more because I have to work with my fell course mate in a short film before the end of the year and we have to submit the film in festivals

- Oh! more than 10,000 people submitted their form, but only 350 were picked, you have to be attentive maybe their would be another one in the near future; I prayed and fasted, becos I was determine to get the training on 3D Animation, and when I got the call for selection it was a dream come true. I got the call and I heard no money, but I had to travel the next day, it was tough because it was on Sunday, but that was 9 days ago, am here now and I have to do my best

The Revolution going on in Abuja, will surely revolutionize the film industry in Nigeria, I am part of those who were given scholarship to take advantage of the Del York International in partnership with the New York Film Academy NYFA to training over 350 Nigerians in various film course, PRODUCERS, DIGITAL FILM MAKER, FILM EDITOR, ACTORS, SCRIPT WRITING, 3D ANIMATION, , everyone here is buzzing and determine to change the film industry.

The courses cost about $4,000 for each student and the NDDC/Rivers States government paid for the over 350 students, and everyone is talking tough.

The trainers - OMG they are just the best, and the experience is just like taking the courses in New York, they are so committed to their job, almost like taking one student at a time.

In my 3D Animation Class, our trainers are WILL GADEA and JACOB FISHER, these two guys are out of the word, I was in class when I saw Kajola for the first time but I must confess he needed to work more to make it more realistic. The Guy who did Kajola would have at least worked with some nollywood guys to make some effect realistic. I will not condemn the film but I will advice the director to make more realistic film, the space idea isn't a good one, we should be thinking of conquering the earth first before going to space, even India that is ahead of us technology wise and also in film making doesn't have a Sci-Fi movie.

As for the Del York project, I see the future in the making because the guys are some of the best in the world, here you will find guys who have worked in Disney, 20th Century Fox, MTV, even the CEO works with CNN.

Government of other Geo - Political zones should endeavour to support at least 200 people each and make sure they partner with Del York and NYFA so that their people will not be left behind. This is a lifetime experience and I will never substitute anything for this.

Although they gave us accomodation but I am ready to sleep on the street of Abuja just to gain all these knowledge.

Del York International, In Collaboration with the New York Film Academy are revolutionizing the Nigeria Film Industry. I am a part of this revolution and if the feelers from fellow students here in Abuja is anything to go by, then the way the movies are shot in Nigeria will change.

New York Film Academy sent guys and ladies that have worked in the best projects, they are individually special in their various fields and the way to connect with the student is what still amaze everyone here.

In the 3D class where I belong, the guys are so wonderful; WILL GADEA and JACOB FISHER are guys out of this world, they are so nice mere words won't give a proper definition of how I feel about them. My life is change and other serious student have also express the same thing.

The total package is worth $3,500 plus $500 but thanks to the NDDC some of us got free scholarship, but I am taking the course more serious like I paid the money myself. I personal prayed to God to be part of he REVOLUTION and only people who were around me when I got the text message confirming my selection will tell crazy reaction.

I wish more organization will collaborate with DEL YORK INTERNATIONAL to ensure that other people from other parts of Nigeria enjoy similar opportunity, because these guys from America have created a new image about America in my heart.

I may only have a solid foundation right now but by the time I return to Lagos, I will explore more opportunity and work twice as hard to ensure that the effort of those who made this great opportunity possible never regret the opportunity they gave me, and as for the Nigeria Audio/Visual Industry am on my way, as I will give everything to ensure that I join the creation of a new Nigeria Industry.

I'm also stuck with the word "touch not my annoited and do my prophet no harm" I cannot judge TBJ because whatever is working for him is working for him; in year 2000 when my mum was seriously ill and no remedy could come from anywhere we took her there but she wasn't healed but that same week I saw the current assistant coach of the eagles Daniel Amokachi, so if Yobo went there, no big deal, afterall the people who visit the place are human, so Yobo is no less or more human than those who go there. Almost two months ago Mr. Rumor told us that Umaru is dead but Aadooaka & Co told us that he is still alive that Mr. R. is a liar. several weeks later a lot of different stories were told by the A & Co group just to make us believe the president is alive, no problem I believe them; later the R group said they couldn't find him in the hospital list, we disagree, just to believe we still have a president. few days ago they told us that our president who has been on life support machine signed the budget and he spoke with the secretary for more than an hour (no wahala); but now my question is how could someone lying on the bed with oxygen mask strapped to the face, with needle and drips attached to the hand, heart support gadget to the heart; while the person in question is facing the sealing above him and to cap it all up, the person in question will not be able to eat any solid meal; how on eat could such person find the strength to sign a proper signature. Nobody can ever sign a simple signature properly if he/she has not eaten for only 72hrs, let alone more than 40 days (try it if you doubt my theory). So if you believe that the signing of the signature is a lie, then you should disagree with a lot of other stories coming from the same source.

Now since the A group are the only people allowed to see the president and they are the same people who also told us a certain Umaru called the Vice President, Senate President, and the Speaker; is it not also possible that they must have also arranged someone who sound more like Umaru work on him for days and fly him to Saudi and ask him to make a call to these group of people. in fact what are the US going to call those who kill their citizens on a daily basis; they look for a mild name like serial killer; as far as am concern that is the same as terror. more people die in US more than the rest of the world put together, yet they are not call terrorist.

there is no cause for alarm, I don't know why we are making mountain out of nothing; we have been on various list for many years and nothing happened; the US is only trying to shift the blame to Nigeria simply becos they know it would affect their image more if they accept the fact that they knew about Farouk even long before the Nigerian authorities.

It is simple if they place us on their list, we can get a piece of paper and place them on the list too; nonsense.

If they plan to screen our people with the new camera, then they should remember that they us four(4) of the same type of cameras; so there is no big deal if they screen our people so long as our authorities should be prepared to give them the same treatment in our airport whenever they arrive.

I imagine a situation when a US top executives in any of the oil companies will be screen the same way Nigerians will be screened.

do you know the number of tribes in Lagos alone, that mean Lagos will be divided into 3-4 more state, because we have the aworis and co, so we should be more reasonable so as to turn this country around

whoever gave you access to my head, because you completely spoke my mind. Imagine some great road connection, television came into this country during that era, imagine what television would have been today if we stuck with the region, see common South Africa, miles ahead of us, just how many years after the struggle, they have hosted Rugby, Cricket world cup, and next year the big one is coming.

Am from Edo state, will someone convince me that Edo state will be able to single handedly build a stadium like the soccer city stadium; lie lie; common sense is not common, we must face reality, but with the combination of edo, delta, rivers, bayelsa, akwa ibom, cross river, build wembly will surely be possible as well as several mini-stadia.

Setting up the structure for the 6 zones is certainly not going to be without very tough electoral laws, so we should also look at the bright side of this great idea, I know some people think still think the creation of more state is the way to go, but lets take a critical look at the regional structure as well as the state and the reason why some people call for more creation instead of merging majority of those states to become one.

STATE: A lot of people call for the creation of state simply because they claim to be marginalized, but in the real sense of it, it is actually the greedy once who feel they have not succeeded politically, and they rush down to their people claiming the reason why they never got nominated was because the other tribe don't want their people at the top of government of the state. Those people calling fr the creation of more state ask them what can they offer alone that can sustain development for their people for only 10 years and their response will be as good as mine. The truth is that majority of those people still hope to get allocation from the FG, go to office share the loot, patch one small road and sign about it. But the moment you tell them that they have to generate their own revenue, you will get a different song. All due respect to some community that are calling for state creation, maybe they have only waterways, they surely can't stand alone because that alone cannot sustain them, so they need to join forces with others to achieve more.

REGION: Using the level of development in Lagos as a yardstick to draw my point for the SW, picture the successes of BRF in Lagos and as a result of his achievement someone like his is then given the opportunity to govern a region to further test the level of his leadership capabilities before finally deciding whether to go for the head of state or bow out of politics. In a regional setting every state (district or province) is expected to contribute in the best way possible for the development of the region - we know the know for a fact that some state in the current setting has cocoa, some have cassava, palm oil etc; it is expected in the regional setting currently being proposed, the different state of the region is expected to put resources together to develop this core area that needs all the financial support to grow so that the region can sustain it self. The same goes to other regions where some are famous for groundnut etc. Even the South South should know that oil will not be forever so if they become a region they should be able to invest in order area that can sustain them beyond the oil era.

The FG should be organised in such a way that the regions will be made contribute between 20%-35% for their revenue to the Federal coffers, so that institution like the military, federal border people, navy, air force, custom, immigration etc will managed by the FG, the FG should also manage inter regional project and the region will finance the project to the point of exit to connect to the other region etc.

You are missing the point here, who is the FG, it is a contraption formed in our mind to be some super monster that has money brewing out of every crack of its body. My friend the money FG is spending anyhow is our common-wealth. It is up to us as nation to work out a formula where the common wealth of the Nigerian nation will be distributed fairly and equitable.

At the moment the FG is taking too much from the pie, that formula must be revisited, the sooner that is done the better it will be.

America stopped creating state a long time ago; we should remember that the region government have worked for us in the past and the same thing is working wonders in South Africa, see Brazil as another great example; or are we larger than Russia that have less regions?
