500 billion dollars per year? Oga stop lying, it's not good for the soul. |
Mediocrity seems to be the way of life of alot people. It is our duty as the enlightened ones to challenge it. |
A military junta without allies and under heavy sanctions want to eradicate terrorism without help. |
caye:Who do you think built China and Japan? Who poured billions into their economy? If you know how to manage them, you will enjoy them. If you don't, then you are the problem not them. |
Svoboda:Democracy does bring development and prosperity when done right. Why will you be blaming France for something the leaders themselves did? And by the way what exactly did France do? You will not blame the west for Africa's numerous problems. We are not animals we should be able to take care of ourselves. |
This Nigeriens are not smart at all. They don't know that they are taking their country back decades because of this short-sightedness and hunger for power. Real development comes with stability. When investors and foreign allies see that you have a stable government with clear rules for succession then they will be comfortable investing their money. They are banking on resources forgetting that resources don't guarantee development. The greatest indicator of development in a country is credit rating and that is highly correlated with a stable government. Something they just threw away because they were power hungry. The next few years will be interesting to watch. |
This "they are stealing our resources" thing is getting stale. They are not even ashamed to say it. Someone came to your land and "stole" your resources and you're not ashamed. |

Wainey:Thank you for this. This is what alot of people don't understand. Without this painful measures that Mr. Tinubu is taking, Nigeria will die slowly. I still don't think that he is the best man for the job but I support the economic reforms he is implementing. |
Rayban25:😁😁😆 |
This thread is in response to the one about Nigeria's unemployment rate. According to World of Statistics, Nigeria's unemployment rate is 33.3%. That's a huge number, it means about 1 in 3 persons are unemployed. Or think of it this way; take 10 Nigerians randomly and over 3 of them will be unemployed. I don't think thats true, looking around me, I don't see that number of people idle. They may not have a government job or a job with a multinational company (White collar job) but they are working, doing one thing or the other to survive. Now the post did not specify that the data they used was that of the formal sector alone but I think that any statistics about unemployment in a developing country that does not take into account the huge informal sector is null and void. So please nairalanders, enlighten me. Previous thread: https://www.nairaland.com/7794404/unemployment-rate-world-nigeria-tops#124948773 |
Gadafii:Because natural resources alone does not make a nation wealthy. But human resources is the best kind to have, that's what guarantees development. Silicon Valley is wealthy today not because of natural resources but human resources. Of course we have the middle East but that's because they have a huge amount of natural resources and a small population. |
Tntsi:We are in a democracy, it is flawed but it is a democracy nonetheless. And what we have is far better than what is obtainable under military rule. |
baralatie:We do need the cooperation of Niger but we can't as a democracy allow Niger to be under military rule, its not possible. Nigeria will not go to war with Niger, what I believe Nigeria is going to do is apply a lot of pressure on the military leaders in order to guarantee a return to democracy. And another thing people don't understand is that no nation can develop in isolation. The Asian miracle did not happen in isolation. And isolation is what the coup leaders are dooming Nigeriens to for the foreseeable future because no one will like to invest in a nation without a stable government with clear rules for succession. |
sleek214:Yeah it's not looking good for us but come on now, have some hope. Who knows what will happen? |
I don't blame them (it's hard to do business in Nigeria). |
Benglarue:Not all OBIdients are calling for coup or making treasonous statements, I am an OBIdient and while I still think he would have been a better choice, I absolutely do not support military rule. I absolutely believe in democracy. |
Feggie3:Learn how to disagree with someone without resorting to insults. It tells people that you are a mature adult and not a child. |
baralatie:It's like you don't understand international politics. Our borders with Niger are very porous. We have several agreements that the military junta can just discard. I meant buhari's tenure as a civilian president. And I don't think anyone official said anything about war. All talk about war is speculation. |
lexy2014:I did, you just didn't like my answer. Africans deserve democracy (freedom to choose our leaders), we have suffered too much at the hands of dictators. And if you don't have any thing to say apart from copying and pasting that your comment, don't quote me. I won't reply. |
lexy2014:The adventure concerns him because we are neighbours, everything that affects them affects us. Democracy is the best form of government because the people have choices, they can choose. Imagine that buhari was a military head of state, we would still be under his control today. That freedom to choose is a gift that alot of you coupist are taking for granted. And another consequence of this coup is the lack of international standing. Nigeriens will suffer the consequences of this coup for years because of the short-sightedness of their leaders. |
socialmediaman:Thank you for this. Democracy for all its faults is still the best form of government. |
Ban what? In this our nairaland? It will not happen. |
This is beautiful. I like hearing things like this. It gives me hope. |
Africa needs to realize that the world no send us. We need to be there for ourselves. Russia is not our friend. They are just here to irritate the west. Africa has come of age to be able direct itself to the future we all want. |

👏 You try |
There are repair works going on in our refineries as we speak. These things take time. |
I am not surprised with this. This is the Nigeria we find ourselves in today. |
Bankowner:You will live long. Africa should stop dancing to the tune others are playing. There is a sentence that I like in the ECOWAS briefing:Africa has come of age. I am not a fan of Mr. Tinubu but I like the fact that he is not in support of this coup. |
Russia is not a country you want as an ally. Look at the African countries they are backing. They don't care about the rule of law, about democracy, human rights etc. The west may have done bad things in the past but everyone can see that they are trying to make amends. They are extremely committed to protecting the rule of law and democracy in their allies. I absolutely love what Tinubu and ECOWAS is doing. Even if the president is corrupt, handle it within the boundaries of democracy not outside it. Africans deserve progress and democracy, we have suffered too much. |
Now this is the kind of news we want to hear. 👏Well done. Nigeria will be great in our lifetime. |
