Pastor Peter Godwin, a cleric with the Living Faith Church International, popularly known as Winners Chapel, says the church sacked him and about 40 other pastors in Ekiti State for failing to grow their respective parishes.

The PUNCH, however, learnt that the figure may be much higher than 40 nationwide.

In a letter that has been trending on social media, which is dated June 25, 2021 and signed by the Executive Secretary of the church, Adebisi Aboluwade, the pastors were asked to vacate their official accommodation and hand over their identity cards to their respective area pastors.

Letter To Winners Chapel Pastors
The letter addressed to one of the pastors
One of the letters reads in part, “Consequent upon the recent performance reviews which revealed that your church growth index falls below expectations.

“Please be informed that your services as a pastor in charge are no longer required from this commission with immediate effect.

“You are to vacate the official accommodation (where applicable) and hand over all properties of the ministry in your custody, including your staff identity card to the area pastor before departure.

“May you find grace for a new beginning. Peace.”

In a trending video, Pastor Godwin, who claimed to be one of the pastors affected in Ekiti State, said he was employed on August 28, 2020.

He claimed that he was invited with about 40 of his colleagues by the state pastor on July 1, 2021, but was sacked for failing to grow the revenue of the church.

The pastor said that, on July 1, he received a call that the state pastor wanted to see him, and that he was surprised to see about 40 other pastors when he arrived.

Godwin said, “When I got there, I saw other pastors too, over 40 of them. So, I joined them.

“A few minutes later, we were [each] issued a letter. I opened the content of the letter to see what was there and I saw that it was a sack letter.

“So, I called the management the next day to find out what happened since I wasn’t involved in any dubious activity or evil act. I was told by the management that the church doesn’t operate at a loss.

“They also told me that the total income that is being generated from my station should be able to cater for my welfare and accommodation, so as a result of low income, I’m hereby dismissed.”

It was learnt that the church was working on a statement for an official response.

A source within the church, however, told The PUNCH that the sacking of the pastors had nothing to do with money; rather, the source said, it involved membership growth.

“As indicated in the letter, pastors were sacked for failing to grow membership, which is a key aspect of the ministry.

“It had nothing to do with money and nowhere in any of the letters of disengagement was it stated that it was about money,” the source said.

PoliticsU.S. Raises Alert Over Monkeypox ‘Imported’ From Nigeria by NwaNimo1(op): 7:56am On Jul 17, 2021
A United States resident, who recently travelled from Nigeria, has been diagnosed with a rare case of viral illness, human monkeypox.

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday confirmed that the disease was detected in Texas, making it the first case of the virus seen in the state.

The man is currently hospitalised in Dallas and in stable condition, says the CDC.

“While rare, this case is not a reason for alarm and we do not expect any threat to the general public,” Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins said.

Other than Nigeria, outbreaks have also been reported in Central and West African countries since 1970, with a large outbreak in people in the U.S. in 2003, according to the CDC.

Monkeypox, which belongs to the same family of viruses as smallpox, is a rare but potentially serious viral illness.

It typically begins with flu-like symptoms and swelling of the lymph nodes and gradually develops to widespread rashes on the face and body.

It can spread from person to person through respiratory droplets.

The CDC said since travellers were wearing masks due to COVID-19, the risk of spread of monkeypox via respiratory droplets to others on air planes and at the airports was low.

The patient was infected with the strain most commonly found in parts of West Africa, including Nigeria, CDC added.

The CDC said it was working with local health officials to contact airline passengers and others who were in contact with the infected traveller during their flights from Lagos to Atlanta on July 8 and from Atlanta to Dallas on July 9.

The last time monkeypox was seen in the U.S. was in 2003.

Nearly 50 people fell ill after imported African rodents infected prairie dogs, which subsequently infected humans, the CDC said.

This launched a government search across 15 states for infected prairie dogs.

Foreign AffairsJacob Zuma’s son urges South Africa rioters to ‘Protest & Loot Responsibly’ by NwaNimo1(op): 7:59am On Jul 16, 2021
JACOB Zuma's son has urged rioters to "protest and loot responsibility" as he called for his dad to be freed from jail.

Duduzane Zuma, 37, the former South African president's son, warned the country was "just one massacre away from a complete spiralling out of control" as the violence continued for a sixth day.

Security forces have been struggling to contain the rioting and looting sparked by the jailing of the former leader for failing to appear in court on corruption charges.

In a video shared on the Instagram page of his close associate Winston Innes, Zuma said the chaos was "not a surprise" and he blamed the jailing of his dad and the Covid lockdown for the widespread unrest.

He also slammed his dad's prison sentence as "unjust and unfair" and said he would continue to "stand by him" and call for his release.

'NO FOOD ON THE TABLE'
In a message to South Africans, Zuma said: "For the people that are protesting and looting, please do so carefully and please do so responsibly. Because you cannot hold people responsible for defending what they love.

"I’m about peace, I’m about solutions, I’m unity, and the only way that we’re going to get through this problem we have at hand is by unifying.

"But we need to understand the root cause of these problems, and part of the problem is poverty, unemployment, inequality, and now leaving all the politics aside, let’s deal with the situation with reality in mind.

"We all know what the situation is, people that don’t have and live across the roads from us, they work for us, some of them have been people that have grown up with us.

"Now, we can't have a situation where they leave their places of work, go home and have no food on the table."

In the 11-minute clip, Zuma said the situation had spiralled out of control due to the Covid lockdown, adding that the chaos would not be resolved without addressing the jailing of his dad.

"Two things have caused what is called civil unrest. One was the arresting and imprisonment of Jacob Zuma, and the second thing, in my firm belief, is lockdown," he said.

"Now, if we come and lock people down further, what do we expect to happen? There’s certain choices that we’ve made that have brought us to this position that we are in today.

"Certain decisions that have been made and not made that have brought us to where we are today.

"It's not going to help us pointing fingers and creating issues that will divide us. We need to pull together."

'TURNED A BLIND EYE'
Zuma said many people had "turned a blind eye" to poverty in the country.

"The issues of inequality, unemployment and poverty are real issues, and this is what is playing out in the public domain," he said.

"Don't ever forget people are a product of their environment. This is very simple... people are going to do this as long as there is no food on the table.

"Lift the lockdown, let people back to work, let businesses run, that is a starting point."

At least 72 people have died and more than 1,200 arrested as thousands of people ransacked shops, stealing food, electrical appliances, alcohol and clothes.

Shocking images showed hundreds of people running towards a warehouse on Wednesday and tearing through containers.

Armed residents have taken to the streets to guard buildings as looters snatch everything from food and alcohol to big-screen televisions and furniture.

Vigilantes have said they are "willing to die" to protect the streets from looters - and a 14-year-old boy was reportedly shot dead by taxi drivers guarding a mall.

FOOD AND FUEL SHORTAGES
Defence minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula said 25,000 troops will be deployed in the coming days to assist the overrun security forces.

The rampant looting hit supply chains and transport links in the southeastern province of KwaZulu-Natal, sparking fears of food and fuel shortages.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned parts of the country "may soon be running short of basic provisions following the extensive disruption of food, fuel and medicine supply chains".

State-owned logistics operator Transnet declared a "force majeure" yesterday - an emergency beyond its control - on a key rail line that links Johannesburg to the coast due to the unrest.

Earlier this week, the country's largest refinery SAPREF shut its plant in Durban, which is responsible for a third of South Africa's fuel supply.

"It's inevitable that we will have fuel shortages in the next couple of days or weeks," the Automobile Association's Layton Beard said.
