PoliticsAgain, Senate Approves N2.34 Trillion Loan Request For Buhari Regime by NwaNimo1(op): 6:16pm On Jul 07, 2021
The Senate has on Wednesday, approved a N2.343 trillion external borrowing plan to finance the 2021 budget deficit.

This was sequel to the presentation of the report of the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts by the Chairman of the committee, Senator Clifford Ordia, during plenary.

Presenting the report, Mr Ordia noted that President Muhammadu Buhari had in a letter to the Senate, dated May 6, requested for the authorisation of the implementation of the new external borrowing.

This is by raising the sum of $6.183 billion provided for in the 2021 Appropriation Act through the issuance of Eurobond in the International Capital Market (ICM).

Mr Ordia said that the amount authorised above may be raised from multiple sources such as the ICM and any other multilateral or bilateral sources as may be available.

According to him, as part of the committee’s finding, it noted with utmost importance genuine and serious concerns of Nigerians about the level of sustainability and servicing of our external borrowing.

“The committee also notes that due to the short fall in our annual revenues in relation to our need for rapid infrastructural and human capital development, we have had to pass deficit budget every year requiring us to borrow to finance the deficit in our budget.’’

In his remarks, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan said “this is not a new law. This is a borrowing plan that we approved before for the budget 2021.’’

“What we have done is to simply provide the necessary resolution that will enable the government to go and borrow,’’ Lawan said.

According to him, our committees should be alive and alert on how the funds that will be borrowed will be put to use.

“No frivolous expenditures should be entertained. I imagine that everybody in the trust of public funds, especially in this loans will be as prudent and as economical as possible.’’

Meanwhile, the upper chamber also approved the report of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Customary Court Act 2007.

The report was presented by the committee’s chairman, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.

PoliticsPresidency Hails Security Agencies Over Arrest Of Nnamdi Kanu & Attack On Igboho by NwaNimo1(op): 10:46am On Jul 07, 2021
Presidency hails security agencies over rearrest of Nnamdi Kanu, attack on Sunday Igboho’s home

The Presidency has praised the country’s security agencies on the re-arrest and repatriation of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu; as well as the recent attack by the Department of State Services (DSS) on the home of Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo also, alias Sunday Igboho.

The presidency in a statement signed by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, accused both Kanu and Igboho of inflicting pain on fellow Nigerians.

Shehu in the statemeny titled, ‘Presidency Statement On The Recent Successes Of Security And Intelligence Agencies,’ said Kanu, who was re-arrested and re-arraigned last week for terrorism-related charges, was captured as a result of “cross-border cooperation” and “international operation”, adding that the IPOB leader would “face the law”.

According to him, “The Government had long been monitoring the activities of IPOB and had strong cause to believe that their funding sources include proceeds of suspected illicit criminal activities. By this singular action of our Security Forces, sanity, calm and peace has been returned to our communities who previously lived in constant fear of these misguided elements.”

Shehu further hailed last Thursday’s midnight raid on the home of foremost Yoruba nation campaigner, Igboho. The presidential spokesman described Igboho as a “militant ethnic secessionist”.

He said, “In furtherance of continued diligent work, the State Security Service on Thursday, 1st July raided the residence of a militant ethnic Secessionist, who has also been conducting acts of terror and disturbing the peace under the guise of protecting fellow ‘kinsmen’.

“His (Igboho) seditious utterances and antics, which he is known to have publicly expressed, have overtime morphed into very hateful and vile laden speeches. It must be highlighted that the government respects fundamental rights of citizens to express their views and recognizes this as a democratic tenet. However, any attempt to build an Armoury coupled with plans either subtle or expressed to undermine our unity as a nation will not be condoned.

“Mr. President’s directives to Security Services regarding anyone seen to be carrying arms, particularly AK-47 are clear and require no further illumination. Assault weapons are not tools of peace-loving people and as such, regardless of who they are and where they are from, the Security Agencies should treat them all the same.

“The successes of our Security Agencies must be commended as they have demonstrated significant deftness, guile and secrecy in carrying out these missions. This level of professionalism must be sustained and brought to bear as we focus on extracting from our society those who have found a new trade in targeting students, rural dwellers and our citizens in the North-West. The nation recognizes their efforts and sacrifice.”

President Muhammadu Buhari’s home state Katsina have begun moves to convert all TV viewing centres to Islamic schools.

The Katsina House of Assembly initiated the process on Tuesday following a joint motion presented by a Jibia constituency member, Mustapha Yusuf-Jibia.

At the plenary, presided over by the Speaker, Tasi’u Maigari, the lawmaker explained that the call became necessary because the schools were more important than the viewing centres.

He pointed out that Islamic education had suffered setbacks, especially in the rural areas, hence the need for prompt action to address the issues.

Mr Yusuf-Jibia added that if his prayer succeeded, the conversion would also reduce the spate of insecurity in Katsina.

He cited an instance during a dialogue with some bandits where they complained of a lack of schools for their children, saying that the conversion would allow them to enrol.

“If my prayer scales through, it will also help in reducing the number of Almajiri children roaming the streets in the name of begging.

“Some of these viewing centres were abandoned and had become refuse dumps, criminal hideouts and a place where redundant youths hang around,” said Mr Yusuf-Jibia.

According to him, the government will recruit teachers to teach in the schools, hence providing employment for people in the state.

“Not only the government but also the wealthy individuals and philanthropists in the areas can employ them,” he said.

He added that the government established the centres across the state primarily to enlighten the public on the activities of the state government.

After deliberations by the lawmakers, the house ordered its joint committees on religious affairs and social development to study the appropriateness of the conversion.

The house also ordered the committees to assess the number of those centres and the non-functional Islamic schools across the state and report within three months.
