Chelsea wing-back Victor Moses has completed a permanent move to Spartak Moscow, having spent last season on loan at the Russian club. The Nigerian, 30, joined the Blues from Wigan Athletic in 2012. He went on to win the Premier League, Europa League and FA Cup at Stamford Bridge. Moses enjoyed his best season at Chelsea under Antonio Conte as the Italian guided the club to a fifth Premier League title in 2016-17. He also had loan spells with Liverpool, Stoke City, West Ham United and, again with Conte, at Inter Milan. Moses made 128 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 18 goals https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/57698888 |
Midfielder Jon Mikel Obi has joined Kuwait Sporting Club after having his deal with Stoke City cancelled by mutual consent. The 34-year-old made 41 appearances in two seasons with Stoke and his deal had another 12 months left to run. Mikel joined Stoke from Turkish side Trabzonspor, having previously spent 11 years with Chelsea. Stoke boss Michael O'Neill said there was an agreement he could leave for a "significant overseas opportunity". He added: "John is a fantastic professional and was a huge presence for us last season both on and off the field, particularly with the young players in our first-team squad." Mikel made 249 Premier League appearances for Chelsea, which ended when he left Stamford Bridge in 2017. He won the Champions League and Europa League, two Premier Leagues, three FA Cups and the League Cup during his time with the London club. Mikel won 89 caps for Nigeria, played in two World Cups and helped the Super Eagles win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, before announcing his retirement from international football two years ago. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/57690435 |

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) on Saturday said Sheikh El-Zakzaky has always been yearning for a united Nigeria. IMN said: “El-Zakzaky had advocated that Nigeria should co-opt other neighboring countries and form a larger united country, where we can utilize our rich and different cultures and diversities.” The Islamic movement said this while reacting to pictures of El-Zakzaky on social media comparing him to Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho. IMN said El-Zakzaky is not an enemy of Nigeria. The Kaduna State Government charged El-Zakzaky and his wife with eight counts bordering on culpable homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of public peace. The two have remained in detention despite several court orders calling for their release. The government accused the IMN of not recognising the Nigerian constitution and authority. His prolonged detention has fueled several protests by members of the Shiite movement in many Nigerian cities. A statement issued in Abuja by a top member of the IMN, Professor Abdullahi Danladi said: “Recently the social media went awash with the pictures of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky framed on both sides with the pictures of Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho. Beneath the pictures the caption “Buhari is respecting Federal Character in the fight against the enemies of Nigeria” was printed. “Ordinarily one would have considered it as malevolent work of some dubious and mischief maker(s). However on second thought, it might require reaction at least to set the record straight and disabuse the minds of the gullible that may not be aware of the call and mission of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky. “First, Sheikh Zakzaky is not an enemy of Nigeria. For those who may care to know, man is created by the Almighty Allah and placed on this earth for a short period of time for the purpose of submitting and worshipping Allah and Allah alone. To that end various Prophets have come to guide mankind, the last of them is Prophet Muhammad (SAWA). Sheikh Zakzaky is a Muslim trying to leave according to the teachings of Islam. “He has been calling for the establishment of divine justice and Allah’s rules in all our daily affairs. In line with the history of the Prophets and pious servants of Allah that had embarked on a similar mission. “He has narrated a number of times that when he was in Kirikiri prison with some president Shagari’s ministers under the infamous decree two of the unpopular regime of Buhari/Idiagbon that there had been discussions on the breakup of Nigeria. He had refused to comment initially, but when they insisted on his opinion, he said to him, Nigeria should co-opt other neighboring countries and form a larger united country, where we can utilize our rich and different cultures and diversities.” On the issue of religious differences, IMN said El-Zakzaky has maintained that it is not a problem so long as: “we respect one another’s views and opinions. The religion of Islam does not force anyone to accept and practice it. So how can such a personality calling for unity and prosperous life be labeled as an enemy of the country? “No matter how daft one may be he can clearly differentiate between the message of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky and those of Nnamdi Kanu and Sunday Igboho, so how foolish are those trying to bamboozle the message of Sheikh Zakzaky?” https://thenationonlineng.net/el-zakzaky-pushing-for-a-united-nigeria-says-islamic-movement/ |
In effect borrowing to pay politicians..... |
Nigeria’s dwindling finances came under intense pressure again in the first five months of the year, as the federal government borrowed at least N1.3 trillion to cover for salaries of civil servants and matured debts. Ripples Nigeria analysis of the 2022-2024 Medium Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Paper (MTEF/FSP) published by the Budget Office showed that government’s personnel and debt expenditures, which stood at about N3.15 trillion exceeded its overall revenue of about N1.84 trillion. While the federal government has continued to justify the need to borrow for infrastructure, the data shows a chunk of the money went into recurrent expenditure. ![]() A breakdown of the data from the MTEF/FSP document showed that out of the projected Federal Government’s retained revenue of N3.32 trillion, only N1.84 trillion was realized, representing 67 percent of the projected revenue, with a variance of 44.6 percent. When the N1.84 trillion revenue figure is calculated to the total debt service of N1.80 trillion over the same period, it shows that the Nigerian government spent 98 percent of its revenue on debt servicing. Disaggregation of debt service during the period showed, domestic debt gulped N913.1 billion of the revenue while N408.71 billion was used to offset the external debt. Also, interest payment for debt through Ways And Means gulped N480.52 billion. With only N42.65 billion of revenue left, the government was forced to offset personnel cost of N1.35 trillion with borrowed fund. “Every year, the government makes the argument that we are borrowing for infrastructure. Borrowing is not an issue but borrowing to pay salaries should be a concern,” an economist, Kunle Ajayi, told Ripples Nigeria. “It is a dangerous thing that the government employees’ salaries were being paid through loans,” he added. Other expenditure highlights in the report during the period include N206.89 billion statutory transfers, and N978.13 billion for capital expenditure. https://www.ripplesnigeria.com/data-show-nigerian-govt-borrowed-n1-3trn-to-pay-salaries-debts-from-jan-may37/ |

Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, has disclosed that the Federal Government has committed the sum of $280 million for the $1.2 billion Kaduna-Kano rail project which is set to begin this month. Amaechi disclosed this during a meeting with reporters as the project is part of 4 new rail projects which the FG recently commenced, according to Bloomberg. “So far, the government has committed $280 million to the project and will soon provide a further $100 million,” Amaechi said. The Minister added that the line would be partially funded by the FG and China. Recall Nairametrics reported in March, that the Minister said the Federal Government is about to commence 4 new rail line projects in various parts of the country. “The ones we are about to start include Ibadan to Kano, we are waiting for funds from China. We are about to start Port Harcourt to Maiduguri, we are waiting for the cabinet to approve consulting shares. “That is why there may be a bit of adjustment in the pricing of Kano-Maradi because we have to adjust it to link up to Kano-Lagos so that it can terminate at Lagos seaport,” he stated. https://nairametrics.com/2021/07/02/fg-has-committed-280-million-for-1-2-billion-kaduna-kano-rail-amaechi/ |
