Leader of the Ilana Omo Oodua (IOO), Emeritus Prof. Banji Akintoye on Friday said there is no going back on the planned Yoruba Nation rally in Lagos on Saturday. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu had on Thursday warned secessionists to stay away from Lagos as no protest would be allowed in the state. But the IOO said the rally would go on as planned and that it would be peaceful. The group claimed to have written to Odumosu and copied Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to ensure that hoodlums did not hijack the protest. A statement issued by its General Secretary, George Akinola and its legal adviser, Olasupo Ojo urged the police to make sure the protest was not hijacked. “Our rally scheduled to hold on Saturday will still hold without any fear or intimidation and we promise to be peaceful like we have always been. “We have been peaceful, orderly and lawful at everywhere we have visited, therefore, we call on the Lagos State Police Command to ensure that the rally is not hijacked by hoodlums. “We are happy that the Police already know that hoodlums are likely to hijack the rally. Now, we call on the police to ensure such does not happen like it didn’t happen in Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Oyo and Ogun States respectively where we’ve held our rallies,” the statement said. According to IOO, It is the duty of the Police to safeguard “our peaceful demonstration and protect us. On our own part, we promise to cooperate with the police towards ensuring that the rally is peaceful and orderly.” https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2021/07/02/akintoye-dares-police-no-going-back-on-lagos-rally/ |

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has alleged that the Kenyan Government and President Uhuru Kenyetta betrayed Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in order to get the N100 million bounty placed on him(Kanu) by a Coalition of Northern groups earlier in the month. DAILY POST had reported that about seventeen Northern Groups under the aegis of Northern Consensus Movement, NCM, on Thursday declared Kanu wanted, accusing him of orchestrating the killings and destruction of property owned by Northerners in the Southeast. The President of the group, Dr Auwal Abdullahi, while addressing a press conference, also placed a N100m bounty on Kanu. Although the Federal Government of Nigeria has remained silent on the location of Nnamdi Kanu’s arrest, all indications show that he was intercepted by Kenyan authorities who detained him and subsequently handed him to the Nigerian government. IPOB, however, believes that the Kenyan Government must be attracted by the monetary reward as announced by the Northern groups. In a statement signed by Emma Powerful, the Publicity Secretary of IPOB, the group said, “We still don’t understand why Uhuru Kenyatta and some corrupt officials of his Government would prefer to betray Nnamdi Kanu and Biafrans? “Is it because of Nigeria oil money? Is it because of the paltry N100 million bounty placed on Kanu’s head by some Northern charlatans? “Why will President Uhuru Kenyetta sell our leader, Mazi Nnamdi to the evil hands of the Nigerian government? “It is so shameful that Uhuru Kenyatta would belittle himself in a manner he has just done.” https://dailypost.ng/2021/07/01/kenyan-govt-may-have-sold-nnamdi-kanu-for-n100m-oil-money-ipob/ |

Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike says it is not enough for the Federal Government to arrest Nnamdi Kanu, while leaders of other notorious groups are roaming wild and free. Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), was rearrested, brought back to Nigeria, and re-arraigned on Tuesday, June 29. Speaking on the development, Governor Wike said for justice to be said to have prevailed, the Federal Government must ensure that the leaders of other groups that have been linked to killings and unrest must be arrested and made to face the law. Wike who on Thursday was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today, said in the case of Kanu, due process must be followed so that justice may come full circle. More details shortly. https://www.channelstv.com/2021/07/01/nnamdi-kanu-fg-must-go-after-bandits-miyetti-allah-others-for-justice-to-prevail-wike/ |

The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has reportedly told investors that the country’s currency is overvalued by 10%. The governor’s remarks, which have been confirmed by two unnamed sources, suggest that the central bank is planning to devalue the naira again. As previously reported by Bitcoin.com News, in May 2021, authorities in Nigeria allowed the naira’s exchange rate against the US dollar to drop from a fixed rate of 381 per dollar to the current official rate of 410. This devaluation, which was the third one in less than 18 months, briefly narrowed the gap between the official and the parallel market rate. However, at the time of writing, this gap had widened again. Nevertheless, as a Reuters report explains, the CBN chief is now expecting to see this gap shrink. According to the report, the governor said: “The spot naira rate of 410-412 per dollar would eventually weaken by 5% to 10%.” Weakening the naira by between 5% to 10% means the CBN is expecting the spot rate of the naira to fluctuate between 430 and 450. Still, this new CBN target remains below the current parallel market exchange rate of 500 for every dollar. The report also touches on why Emefiele, who has previously defended the naira’s overvalued exchange rate, is now warming up to the idea of devaluing the local currency. According to the report, another devaluation of the naira may be linked to the World Bank’s call for the unification of Nigeria’s multiple exchange rates. The global lending institution reportedly wants to see “closer parity before the release of a much-needed $1.5 billion budget support loan.” In addition to the World Bank’s demands, the CBN has faced increased pressure to devalue the naira by businesses that are failing to access the resource via the official channels. This, in turn, leaves the parallel market as their only source for foreign currency. https://news.bitcoin.com/nigerian-currency-overvalued-by-10-says-central-bank-governor/ |

There are emerging controversies over the arrest leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, with sources suggesting that Western authorities were compromised to pave way for his extradition. Earlier, Business Hallmark, quoting sources familiar with arrest of the IPOB leader, reported that he was arrested in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where he had reportedly been living for a while by Interpol, the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) in collaboration with its foreign counterparts. Yet, there are reports that Kanu was arrested in a South American country after he was trucked by a Nigerian Lady working undercover with Nigerian security agencies However, other sources have said Kanu was apprehended by the Interpol while seeking foreign support for the actualisation of the Republic of Biafra, in a move that involved some western powers. A source disclosed that Kanu was arrested while leaving Israel for an unknown country, since he could not be arrested in Britain because he holds a British passport. As part of strategies to arrest the separatist group leader, Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, was said to have met with the French President, Emmanuel Macron, in May during a summit on the financing of African post-COVID economies convened by the French government, where he sought Macron and INTERPOL’s support for the arrest of Kanu. However, sources had claimed that Kanu was lured to a location in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with a promise of cash donation in millions of dollars and promptly arrested. Kanu who was first arrested in 2015 and was facing charges bordering on treasonable felony following his campaign for the secession of Biafra, fled Nigeria days after being granted bail following an invasion of his home by soldiers in a military operation code-named “Operation Python Dance.” Not less than 23 people were reportedly killed during the operation. Business Hallmark learned that the operation leading to his arrest had been ongoing for awhile, until he was arrested on June 27. Kanu was said to have been tracked through some members of IPOB who were recently arrested following a massive military operation in the southeast, many of whom are currently in various detention centers. The security agencies worked through the links to give the IPOB leader the impression that he was going to be given some millions of dollars in cash donations to the organisation. He was said to have decided to collect the money himself because of the huge amount involved and even kept his associates in the dark about his mission. Sources within the security circles said his close lieutenants did not know his whereabouts on the day he was arrested. Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Abubakar Malami, who announced his arrest yesterday, said he was “intercepted” and extradited to Nigeria. https://hallmarknews.com/controversy-over-kanus-arrest/ |

Fresh information made available to POLITICS NIGERIA has detailed how the Nigerian Government was able to capture the wanted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu. According to TheWill Newspaper, Kanu was captured after Nigeria’s attorney general, Abubakar Malami wrote to the Ethiopian government through the ministry of foreign affairs alerting them that Kanu, a wanted fugitive was in their country. The government also contacted INTERPOL for assistance in arresting and extraditing Kanu to Nigeria to face his charges. He was intercepted last weekend and immediately repatriated to Nigeria. Kanu was on Tuesday arraigned in court and remanded in DSS custody. His case was adjourned till July 26th. It will be recalled that Kanu jumped bail in 2019 and has been on the run since. He is currently facing charges of treasonable felony which carries the death penalty. More to come… https://politicsnigeria.com/how-interpol-nigerian-security-captured-nnamdi-kanu-in-ethiopia-details/ |
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, the principal surety to the embattled self-acclaimed Biafran leader, Nnamdi Kanu may on July 26 apply for refund of his N100M forfeited to the federal government when Kanu jumped bail. Kanu, who jumped bail since 2019, has just been rearrested and will appear in Federal High Court for continuation of his criminal trial on terrorism charges. The senator representing Abia North Senatatorial district in the Senate had forfeited the huge sum in liue of his inability to produce Kanu in court to face the criminal trial. Abaribe was said to have been given opportunities five times to produce Kanu as required by law but could not meet up. In one of his appearances in court, the Senator has alleged that that the federal government caused Kanu to jump bail and escaped out of the country when armed soldiers allegedly invaded his family house. He prayed the court to hold the federal government responsible for the escape and spare him the pain of forfeiting the bail bonds Justice Binta Nyako, however, rejected the prayers of the surety and ordered him to either forfeit the bail bonds or stand in place of Kanu for criminal trial on terrorism and reasonable felony punishable with either death or life imprisonment. The Senate minority leader was said to have subsequently opted for lesser punishment and thereafter forfeited the huge sum. Although DAILY POST could not reach Abaribe for comments, one of his lawyers, Maxwell Okpara, said that the legal team of Abaribe will apply for refund of the money for their client. “It is a settled law that once escapee defendant in a criminal matter is rearrested, the surety who forfeited bond must be refunded. “It does not matter whether the escapee accused person is rearrested by the surety or somebody else as in the instant matter. The bottom line is that our client must be refunded to the tune of N100M he had earlier forfeited in the course of the suretyship,” the lawyer said. https://independent.ng/wp-content/uploads/Enyinnaya-Abaribe-720x430.jpg https://independent.ng/nnamdi-kanus-surety-abaribe-sets-to-claim-n100m-forfeited-bail-fund-from-fg/ |
