lonelydora: Usually it does not pull out on high speed or on a smooth road, but on a rough road at slow movement. But always buy OEM parts and forget about cheap parts. I own an accord and always travel with it across the country, no issues at all. Have gone from PH to Kebbi with my accord.

Toyota comes with it's own issues.

No model of car is superior over another, it depends on your maintenance culture.

Therefore, the comparison between Toyota and Honda in terms of performance is miles apart. Toyota doesn't hesitate to recall a faulty product from the market; for instance they recalled Toyota camry 2008 (muscle) from the market when there were complaints of cruise control error (the only instance of recall; and was even discovered to be a footmat causing the problem). So when going for reliability; Toyota is the car. I stand to be corrected!

Mine was a funny experience! Studying in nigeria is not easy, hardly do I go to the library to read becausse there were few books in my subject area. While studying for my masters in Nigeria, we used internet sources mostly, plagiarism was very rampant (save for a few lecturers who were strict). While I went over to the UK, because of the cold, I was always in the library to save on my heating bills (at my off campus accomodation). In my first course I blasted A. The more I stayed in the library, the more I found materials. The Library on most days is 24 hours (self service at night). There are vending machines to buy drinks and snacks, vending machines to borrow and return books, fast internet to watch movies and sports (man need a break na).

The system was such that they encourage you to ask questions and they prefer you pass at the first attempt. I never really liked the cold weather so the library was my safe haven. Mind you I still visited the cinemas and gyms; not also shying away from social outings and travels. My first grade was like a motivating factor so na so i graduated within 11 months with a distinction.

... back to topic, the Library guards always came to the group study room (private room) where i read 15 mins before time on closing times. I made them realize UK education is so expensive and I needed to make the best out of my opportunity. The end justifies the means!!!

On the UK shopping! I have seen Naija pple shopping like there's no tomorrow here! Only a few brits wear all these designer labels sef! On most days the designer shops are often scanty. I have been to M & S shop, where shop manager on learning I am a Nigerian, he informed me there's a certain woman that whenever she comes from Lagos, he practically have to close down the shop for two days; so she can pack her stock. Imagine my country reeling with poverty and unemployment!!!

To cap this, I was in Schippol airport Amsterdam, where a ad banner clearly shows a Hausa man (no pun intended) carrying a rocksack he with overflowing goods. Im sure the dutch have seen one to many of this stuffs! lol!

A rating of four stars out of five stars is possible for movies (vote is caste by site visitors)because the last time I checked, I did not even see "last flight to Abuja" on the website. Please, it seems Gov. BRF is one of the most proactive govs in Nigeria. I would like to know what are his plans for employing the massive pool of Nigerian graduates in Lagos. We have all these Public Private Partnerships, there should be a clause stating that positions from trainee to mid-level managers should include certain number of Nigerians; rather than foreign companies bringing in an army of expatriates to take what should be for Nigerians. If expatriates must come, they should have ten fifteen years of experience upwards. this is what is being done in Qatar, UAE and several part of the world .

All other Governors and FG can also do this. It may be happening, I stand corrected.

@ OP! I served in Abuja. We had a lot of international students then, and we sure had fun! I have a guy asking the same question you are asking here. He was going to go and serve after his Msc. Oh my God! You are so right! I am studying in the UK. Everything is taxed here! I'm never intending to stay even if they return post study visa,tax everywhere! Tv license, council tax, car insurance, house rent! If I stay here its going to be like slave trade all over again! I know some people who have settled down here, they buy a house and pay mortgage for their lifetime, work all day and pay tax like there is no tomorrow! These is the advice I gave my friend willing to stay... you will be too scared to come back when most of your friends have become very comfortable in Naija! These Oyinbo people know that they need our sweat to keep their capitalist economy running. Sometimes I ask myself what is the satisfaction people get here! they would rather die here than go home and build a legacy for their future generation. But that is just me!

I have been reading a lot of comments about this man (Ghadafi). He came, He Saw, He (was) conquered For a lot of guys here on Nairaland there has been this controversy whether the man is an hero or a villain. Read this piece and think about it again,

Damn Gadhafi,
damn his Will!

Prior to the
Arab Spring, Greenwood Publishing Company of USA commissioned, as it always
does, a book on Customs and Culture of Libya to a US-based Nigerian History Professor
(names withheld for security reasons)  who
decided to incorporate two other people, one his graduate student, an American,
and my humble self, a Nigerian University lecturer, to write this book. Perhaps,
my inclusion in the project originated from the fact that I have always been involved
in field activities, so my experience becomes necessary to writing the book. I was
in Libya before the crisis and had plenty of time to comb everywhere for data
for the book. This field activities and the quality of data obtained are what
formed the bedrock of what the book will present to the world next March when
the book will go on sale globally.


The field
activities, secondary literature, and practicalities on ground in Libya would
not forgive Gadhafi, no matter how catchy or strongly-worded his Will may be. Permit
me to say that, there is nothing like a benevolent dictator and no matter what
we say or think; dictatorship would always end badly. Granted that Gadhafi,
perhaps in modern Africa, would remain a shining light on achievements, but I
must inform you that underlining his achievements were Libyan bloods!


For the records,
Gadhafi started out as a young, people-driven leader. He sacked the monarchy of
Ali, the man who, with others, assiduously fought and got independence for
Libya. He was accused of being a stooge of the West. As an historian, I will
suggest caution here. Libya was without oil then and it was difficult for it to
survive without aid! It was under the care of the UN after the Second World War
and everyone was apprehensive how it will survive as an independent nation
without aid! Thank God for CRUDE OIL!


However,
following Gadhafi's take-over, he instituted policies that drove not just
Americans and British away, but also indigenous Berbers, Tuaregs, Jews, etc. British
and Americans, as part of post-World War II geopolitics, maintained military
bases in Libya to check Soviet’s ambition in North Africa; indigenous Berbers,
Tuaregs, Jews, etc. were native Libyans, who stood against Roman, Greek, Ottoman,
Spanish and Italian occupations at different times. They fought and defeated ‘almighty’
America too! The Jews, most of whom were Israelis, had settled for hundreds of
years in different parts of Libya and most of the architectural masterpieces you
find today in Libya were the handiworks of these Jews, the various invaders
that made Libya their colonies at one time or the other. Many have erroneously
believed that they were built by Gadhafi. If not for Gadhafi, Libya (and
Africa) would have remained the home of indigenous and, perhaps, the oldest
Jewish community on earth. He not only sent them away, but also nationalized
all their assets, some of which were shared by the Revolutionary Council that
Gadhafi led.


He banned
literature, arts, music, media, English and French (languages), novels, prose,
poems, etc. and pronounced Libya an Islamic state. The only Radio and TV
stations in Libya under Gadhafi were state-owned! Same applied to publishing
house! They were controlled by his children! Professors, poets, dramatists,
etc. who must publish, must publish with him and their works had to be vetted
for subversive elements! Their writings must eulogize the Gadhafi-led
government! If Nigeria were to be under Gadhafi, would there have been people like
Wole Soyinka, Achebe Chinua, Hammed Yerima, Kole Omotosho, Ade-Ajayi, Jide
Oshuntokun, Chimamanda Adiche, etc.? Would any of them have written anything worth
the salt? I bet it with you; many were the talents that Gadhafi sent to their
early graves. Yes, there are Libyan writers, but they all cut their teeth in
the Diasporas, where they were/are tolerated, but not accepted! Until the Libyan
book is out, I would not be able to mention names, but I know many would be
shocked to know what sort of bestiality went on in Libya under Gadhafi. Gadhafi
was killing people at home, sponsoring terrorism abroad! Thousands of professors,
radicals, journalists, teachers, musicians, actors and actresses - people that
we love and many emulate here in Nigeria, were either executed, disappeared, or
forced into exile in Gadhafi’s Libya. Those who fled were hunted to death.


As bad as
Babangida and Abacha were in Nigeria’s military history, Obesere Omo Rapala,
the doyen of Asakasa, was never prohibited from singing! As wicked and mindless
as Obasanjo is, St. Janet, Gordons, Ali Baba, etc. still lampooned him and
sleep at home, not in the coffins! Banning literature, as we all know, is
banning creativity.


Gadhafi went
further than that: Libya started out in 1951/2, as a secular state, although it
still proclaimed itself as an Islamic Republic; Gadhafi made into a Sharia
state. He initially laid the foundation of his new Libya based on the Sharia
laws, but later detoured and wrote his own master-sheet upon which he ran the
affairs of the country. The 3-volume book, The Green Book, became the
unofficial constitution of Libya under Gadhafi. The Ulamas were disbanded and,
in nationally-televised state broadcast, he denounced the Quran, Imams and
Ulamas; saying that you do not need the Imams and Ulamas to understand and
interpret the Quran. This step was the harbinger of his Green Book.


The atrocious
acts were too many; I can go on and on and on. Perhaps I should not end this
section without talking about his reforms in the banking sector. He commanded
all Libyans to deposit all their monies in the national bank, claiming that a
new currency was to be introduced. After the deadlines, he announced that no
one in Libya would have private accounts again and that the state would be
responsible for their upkeeps. That was the end of the reform. No money (old or
new) was returned to anybody, everything was confiscated by government!
Savings, from that moment, were banned! I repeat; all Libyans' monies were
taking away from them by official/government subterfuge! What a reform!!!!


Yes, he
constructed modern Libya along socialist lines; what he called Arab Socialism,
which brought landmark achievements in Arabic/Islamic education,
infrastructural development, housing and urban development to Libya. He
constructed aqueducts that transport water from under the deserts to the
cities. He, until 1994, employed all educated Libyans, but never allowed them
to use their ingenuity on anything other than state-controlled things!


Permit me to add
that his description of Libyans at the outset of the revolution as rats, dogs,
and cockroaches adequately summarized what he reduced them to. He masked all
his atrocities in our eyes with public service and infrastructure. These were
all what we know/see that gave us the erroneous impression that he was a
benevolent dictator who did well for his country. More than a million souls
were ordered killed by this man. For me and many Libyans who helped in my study
for the book, Gadhafi was worse than Adolf Hitler! Perhaps, the political
trajectories are different, therefore, we cannot compare Gadhafi with Abacha,
but I still think Abacha was a child’s play. I am sure that more of his acts
would come to light now that he is gone. Damn Gadhafi, damn his Will!

These recent events have shown that our security forces have no clue on how to tackle this menace. There are a few questions that comes to mind.

1. Are there no leads to follow in order to demystify these group (Boko Haram)?
2. Must we use the preventive methods or just medicine after death (Road Blocks)?  
3. Weren't some people arrested at the outset of this drama?
4 Do we send our security agents on terrorism combative measures?
5. Why was the sect leader hastily executed?

My advice to the government would be to start from the source. Some of their members were arrested and imprisoned, we can start by using them as leads. Plant some undercover agents to mingle with these people because they have families and relatives. The past governor of the state, Alimodu Sheriff should be investigated because it seems he is one of the masterminds of these group. After killing the leader of the group and demolishing their houses the government went to sleep and intelligence gathering was thrown to the dogs!

These are some ways by which modern day terrorism is won and fought.

The law of divide and rule is always the best in this situation. So if a relative is overseeing a project and you pay the consultants directly each one will monitor each other

I have a few things to say after reading all the previous posts, there are several professionals in the building industry such as; the Architect, Quantity surveyor, Builder, land/Estate surveyors, Civil,Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. The Architect is the most important in the field because he conceives the idea of the building with inputs from the client and should be the one to conceive the design and implement the construction from design to completion stage.

The Quantity Surveyor is another very important professional in the industry that people often overlook. He is trained in the science of measurement of material and labour both at the design stage and during the construction. He prepares the bill of Quantities i.e a budget for the building.

From the above explanations it can be derived that a lot of people often overlook these professionals and later come out to cry fowl when they are duped. The consultancy fees which would be paid is not outragious as such that prospective clients often go and hire quacks. If the QS gives you an estimate of the cost of building (including electrical and mechanical installations) that will be a way of monitoring costs and a basis of negotiation for purchase of materials and payment of labour.

There are other professionals too that can be involved depending on the scale of the project but these two mentioned above can bring in the required experts needed.
