That was why I said, holistic completeness is in marrying. Something is wrong with meeting some of these needs outside marriage. Religious beliefs apart, even traditions understand that there is something wrong about those who believe in doing things ordained within marriage outside marriage. Having a life partner is never a pain, pains come from wrong choices. This is true of every other thing apart from marriage. Wrong choice is the mother of pain. A good marriage choice is one of the most wonderful things that can happen to any body.
I will take it that, you accept marriage, because of your religion and traditional believes. That is good enough but some peep dont give a damm about religion and traditional believes you know.

I agree with your good choice concept, but so many people never know/believe they were making wrong choices until they got married, then it become difficult/late to reconsider thier choices. Again if they only remain lovers and later realise they are not meant for each other, they simply move on thier separate ways without any divorce complications

Were these women pregnant before attending the church conference or did they suddenly become pregnant there and delivered of their babies? This pastor na real 419 boaster.
What is the essence of this thread? What is it with you and the man? Everybody knows that those women were pregnant before the program. The Good thing was that those children were born at the camp while the program was on. I don't like joining religious argument, but I think after all said and done about the man with many threads on this forum, this is totally uncalled for. There is nothing new you people want to say that has been unsaid before.

Tell me something new abeg.

The reasons for marriage is simply to meet or satisfy needs. These needs may be physical, physiological, emotional, spiritual, economical, pressure-wise, societal, you can name them. Marrying is one way to live complete holistically except if one has other reason(s) not to marry.
The debate has been that, all these needs can be met by 2 lovers without getting married. Why must we say 'I do' when we can achieve all these without getting married and possibly prevent future pains.

You guys were taking it far too seriously and I don't have the time to deal with this.
Its not taking it too far. If the polls are not important, stop them. But for all its worth, do it well.

What is unfair is unfair. Let's call a spade a spade and not any other name. My question are: did becomerich win the poll? (yes), did he rig the poll ? (tell us and how?)

If his disqualification is because you don't like his views and the way he goes about posting maps, that has nothing to do with this poll. Ban him if he abuses or violates NL rules but don't use your power to upturn what the majority want.

If you don't need the poll, you could have gone ahead and announce your candidate. And if he is that much a problem to you, you should have disqualified him before the poll.

For me. I will not participate in any poll on NL again until this unfairness is corrected.

Michelin what you should realize is that bashing is not totally bad in itself. Apart from the fun of it, which is one of the things we enjoy in this forum, it is also a way of correcting ourselves. For instance, when guys bash fat, lazy, dirty, loose, money loving, hypocritical girls, its a way of asking them to change. There has been one or two bashing from ladies here too that has made me adjust. How shall we know what we want or don't want from each other if we don't constantly bash each other?

So I will say, let the bashing party continues.  grin

I disagree with the saying that Polygamy had increased the spread of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria. Had it being that the person, who said it is not a muslim,I would have said,he is ignorant of islamic religion. However muslims are not practicing polygamy because of sexual urge,it an act of religion. Women and men practicing polygamy relate only with their partners,so what do you mean by your saying ‘polygamy increases the rate at which the disease spread?’ Please, mind your speech

So in your own fact, you believe in your myopic sense of reasoning that D.C has more HIV cases than the whole of West African and you don’t think your parent wasted their money sending you to school talking rubbish like that.
You should have given us the figure HIV patient in Washington D.C to support your claim, instead making a wild statement, when authorities in Nigeria had admitted that one state (Benue) out of 36 has as we speak 400,000 patients.

What causes the fast spread of HIV in one a area is different from others. In D.C it be things like sharing needles by addicts because of high use of narcotic drugs but that can’t be said for Sub Saharan Africa because, use of narcotic is never a huge issue.
Just as polygamy as source fast spread of HIV can’t be the same source in D.C because it’s non existent there. I repeat again that no one is saying that polygamy cause HIV but it help spread it fast in sub Saharan Africa.
And it is not about just sex from their husband. Any of the women can contract HIV through blood transfusion or even a trip to the dentist, pass it to the husband, who will then pass it to the rest of the wives.

use your brain, this is not about defending an outdated culture or system that produced you.
Please argue with facts and figures. Washington DC is currently a serious concern to US.

As at off March this year 3% of residents of Washington DC are infected. It is believed that right now 1 in every 20 (5%) adult is infected with HIV virus. (Mind you the world average is 1%)

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/03/14/AR2009031402176.html

In Nigeria, an estimated 3.1 percent of adults between ages 15-49 are living with HIV and AIDS. (Nigeria is one of the highest % in West Africa)

No you did not answer question, which is, will you be able to allow your wife to marry another man and still be your wife? You are right about the issue not being a moral one , which I have been hammering all along.
The answer I gave was that it is unfair that no man will accept that, but arguably it is still the man's world. (Does that not answers your question enough)

Eziachi:
But when you start equating polygamy with homosexuality based of choice, its absolute rubbish as homosexuality is between two consenting people, but tell me how conseting is a man's first wife to his choice of bringing other women ito their marriage?
Ezeachi, you mean polygamy is without consents? The 1st wife has a choice of leaving. Nobody forced anybody to accept polygamy, it is a mater of choice. All the parties involve in polygamy are adults Please.

You are right that promulgating such a law would not remove chronic womanizers. But there are two advantages such a law would confer

1) The woman that chooses to serve as a harlot((or mistress) would by the very nature of her behaviour or profession most likely (a) wear protection and (b)not have children

2)The chronic womanizer would no longer be able to hide his behaviour under the umbrella of culture and use polygamy as a means of continuing same.(In that wise, any woman that gets married to him would have the locus standi  to confront and challenge him over his behaviour)
Thank you. Your 2 points make lots of sense. I can now agree with your argument.  wink cool

Eziachi:
In reaction to the bolded above, no one have answered this question which I have raised many times. Will the same principle be extended to women, to marry as many men as they wish and keep them under the same roof?
Will you do us the honour and volunteer to be the first man share his wife in marriage with another man. If not save your hypocrisy please.
I did answer your question Eziachi, that men are unfair but arguably/largely we still live in mens world. However I think the crusade of this thread is towards curbing the spread of HIV and not about the morals of polygamy. I doubt if you can win the morality arguiment of polygamy cos at the end it will end up being a matter of choice of individuals concerned, same as in homosexuality. But i will advice you stick to the crusade of curbing HIV as tensor777 is doing. All the same. Its a good debate.  cool
PoliticsRe: Will You Support Any Law Against Polygamy? by OAM4J: 9:08pm On Dec 17, 2009
tensor777:
You say that. But suppose the womanizer refuses to heed the call to use condoms when carousing with harlots, either due to drunkeness or that he does not like protected sex what happens then? AIDS or other STDs could be the consequence He will still go back home and infect his sex partners living with him.

On the other hand by legislating against polygamy the society sends out a clear message against keeping multiple sex partners and prevents some women from being innocent victims of the man's escapades.

A lot of people here want to shy away from the fact that what is at issue here is not condoms or culture but promiscuity. This law would directly adress that issue.
The point am making is that being polygamous is not what defined such man in bold. Whether the man is polygamous or not, he will still exhibit such behavior, only that the victims this time around will be his multiple mistresses who also are most likely to have other lovers (so you can imagine the spread). banning polygamy will not change such man, it will only change the way he goes about it. Except you believe such behavior is only justifies in monogamy.
PoliticsRe: Will You Support Any Law Against Polygamy? by OAM4J: 7:37pm On Dec 17, 2009
tensor777:
I agree we have to stress faithfulness. But the issue goes far deeper than that. It is about the consequences for society when a womanizer has unprotected sex.

There would be the spread of AIDS, death of the man and his multiple sex partners, and the man's children,( from his multiple sex partners) becoming orphans.

We should view polygamy as one of the many negative fallouts of the womanizer's behaviour. That behavour has to be dealt with for the war against AIDS to be won. One practical way to do this is to outlaw polygamy and punish offenders with terms in captivity.
The problem is the bold above. I believe we can deal with it without wasting time on campaigning for ban on polygamy. I just don't seen the ban changing the bold above, might even worsen it. Let's preach all that AIDS is real, That everyone should be faithful with his/her partner, if unable, use protection, then the problem is fully solved.

Polygamy is a form of having multiple indiscriminate sex to your wives by one man who will likely return home with the disease and spread it among the innocent wives. So the larger the number of wives he had, the higher the number of direct infection rate. If he had one wife, that means one direct infection. That is just common sense, it doesn't mean that polygamy is the direct cause of HIV but one of thecauses of it wide/fast spread within an area.

Assuming a man that has 5 wives and each of his wives had six children each and he infected them with the disease and they all die, you are looking at 30 orphans directly and immediatly within one confined environment, couple with high poverty level. If he has one wife and she died as a result of being infected by him, you are looking at just 6 orphans. Six orphans in life has a better chance of survival than 30 from one single family. COMMON SENSE!!

That is exactly what happened in Uganda, where it is custom and common in most rural areas for every man to have at least three wives. And there is a community, I visited with some British colleagues in 2001 in a fact finding mission for UNESCO, what remained in so many villages are thousands of little children left with their very aged grandparents, because their parents are all dead from HIV.  In some cases, the kids are looking after themselves because they are the only ones left. And almost 40 percent of the kid are already infected from birth.

That experience will live with me,the rest of my life. Uganda government had to do something and they did because they recognised this fact of life, though people will not like to accept it, but it's a simple logic, but unfortunately it seems that many Nigerians like BECOMRICH are still leaving in denial about the rate of HIV infection as we speak in Nigeria. IT'S A TIME BOMB. And Polygamy is just one of  other reason for fast infection within a confined area.
I support all the HIV/AIDS campaingn initiatives, because it is a dreadful deasease and I dont wish anyone having it.

But i will not support it on false claims or false alarm. I maintain that the root cause of spread of aids is not poligamy. Let me put it in another word, it is UNFAITHFULNESS. If a man is faithful with his wife/wives aids will not be spread. What we should preach is for a man to be faithful to his wife/wives and women to their husbands, if they cant, they should should use protection.

A man that will will have multiple sex partners will do so whether he is monogamous or polygamous same with the women. So what we should advocate is FAITHFULNESS and those who can not remain faithful should use PROTECTION.  Q.E.D.

Don't get me wrong, I am not for polygamy, it is a matter of choice for those involved. If you bring a reason like population control for being against polygamy, I will support.
