For car owners with auto/car problems, car mechanics can be a heaven-sent.
They have technical and diagnostic skills,in addition to been up to date with the latest technology, which give them the capabilities to fix your car

However, working with a mechanic can also be a nightmare, particularly if you choose the wrong one be it an independent mechanic or at dealership. Some of the signs that your mechanic may be cheating you are fixing something not related to the initial issue, when the repair takes forever and not showing how you old parts.
If you want to receive the best service possible, always make sure that you find the right person for the job.

I know lovers and frequent visitors of NAIRALAND.COM have had both positive and negative experiences with a mechanic and would be eager to share them.

So what is the worst or best thing your mechanic has ever done to you or your car?

I believe the Nigerian police use a regular or civilian car as their patrol vehicle. That is why they don't last because the cars are not meant for the job.

Do you think the Nigerian police car can boast of any of the features listed above?

Police vehicles can endure a lot of abuse and offer a lot of power. When lives are at stake, having a public safety vehicle that can be pushed to the limit is the only viable choice.

Police officers do everything from chasing to transportation during patrols and to enable them to respond to incidents.
They need cars that can rapidly accelerate, force other vehicles off the road, bump into them, but that can also just stay in place and idle for extended periods of time.

The following are some of the main differences between police cars and their regular(Civilian)counterparts:

1)High-Output Engine
Police cars have high performance engines, but with regard to the fuel economy, they strike a balance by having mostly V6 engines, with a few vehicles equipped with a stronger V8 engine.

2)Larger Radiators And Fans
The demands that the Police place on their cars can cause the engine to overheat,so they use upgraded coolers with larger radiators and fans to overcome the threat.

3)Heavy Duty Seats
The seats are heavy duty and often feature an opening to accommodate gun belts and firearms.

4)Enhanced Electrical Output/Powerful Alternator
The lights, radio and other equipment that are in place require a lot of power,so police cars have powerful alternators to keep up.An alternator of a regular car usually produces up to 100 amps of power whike a police vehicle alternators can crank up as much as 225 or more amps to keep everything running properly.

5)Heavy-duty Suspension And Braking
Because of the extra weight of the car,a reinforced suspension system and enhanced brake pads are also features that are likely to be seen in police cars.

6)Run lock ignition
It is used when the officer wants to leave the car running so the lights and radio can stay on without draining the battery. It allows the engine to run without a key in the ignition. If someone tries to steal the police car,the system will cut the engine as soon as the parking brake is disengaged.

7)Video Camera/Recording Device
The video camera and recording device at the front of a modern police car, helps in documenting the chronology and causality of events.

8 )Vehicle Tracking System
It allows officers to track a stolen vehicle fitted with transponder, guiding them to it.They use a specific code provided by the security system to track a specific vehicle.

9)Heavy-Duty Components
Such as the drive shaft,u-joints,frame mounts, wheels and exhaust system which are more sturdier than a civilian’s car.

Crime › 77,558 Persons Arrested For Drug Trafficking Between 2006 And 2015, Says NDLEA by obafemee80(op): 7:03pm On Jul 07, 2017

The chairman, National Drug Law and Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Muhammad Abdallah yesterday said 77,558 persons were arrested for drug trafficking crimes between 2006 and 2015. The chairman, who was represented by NDLEA Commander, Lagos State Command, Mr. Kayode Adeniyi, said this at a one-day seminar to mark the International Day Against Drug and Human Trafficking. It was also marked by the Borno, Kano and Katsina commands.

Adeniyi said the business of drug trafficking is usually motivated by the profit, which is tagged the most lucrative, generating about $320 billion per annum.“The NDLEA first discovered a methamphetamine laboratory at Maza-Maza area of Lagos in 2011 and till date 12 other laboratories have been discovered in Lagos, Anambra and Delta states. Of the arrested 77,558 drug traffickers, 72,735 are male while 4,823 are female. It is painful that Nigeria has been implicated as a source, transit and destination point for drugs and human trafficking,” he said.

Adeniyi called for collaboration of all security agencies in information sharing in order to effectively check the menace of drug trafficking.Chairman of the event, CEO of Halogen Security, Mr. Wale Olaoye, noted that human trafficking in the next few years would surpass illegal sale of arms.

“We are looking to change the narrative as Nigeria tops other countries in production and seizure of hard drugs. Nigeria also has the highest number of persons serving jail terms for drug offenses in the world, which should be of great concern to us.”

The Kano State command of the NDLEA yesterday disclosed the seizure of 39, 224.109kg of assorted drugs in the last one year. Besides, the command said over 768 suspects were also arrested of which 505 suspects were counseled, 68 rehabilitated, while 240 had convictions.

The Katsina State command said it apprehended 412 suspects with over 206 kilograms of illicit drugs between January and June this year. It has also prosecuted 34 drug suspects all of them sentenced to various jail terms, while 95 cases are undergoing various stages of trail at a federal high court in the state.

The Borno State Commander of the NDLEA, Joseph Okechukwu, has said 492 drugs suspects were arrested with the prosecution of 68 others in court of law for drugs abuse and trafficking in the last 18 months

Car Talk › Terrafugia Flying Car Startup Bought By Volvo Parent Geely by obafemee80(op): 11:19am On Jul 07, 2017
Terrefugia, an American company hoping to sell the world’s first practical flying car, has been purchased by Geely.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHJTZ7k0BXU

Volvo has just announced that they’ve acquired Terrafugia, a Massachusetts-based startup and perhaps the most well-known flying car company out there. The dollar amount of the deal has yet to be disclosed, but considering the fact that this could notably speed up their flying car projects, you can be sure it was no paltry sum.

For some reason, Geely, Volvo’s parent company, is being questioned on the motivations behind the move. But with flying car technology becoming a more pressing market move and Terrafugia having easily the most promising path to completion in their “Transition” prototype, the decision to acquire this company seems like a bit of a no-brainer.

The Chinese company also owns Volvo, Lotus, and Lynk&Co, all of which have benefitted from Geely’s largely hands-off monetary backing.

Terrafugia was started in 2006 and flew its first prototype in 2009. The company says that it intends to sell a flying car to the public by 2019.

Car Talk › Re: Spark Plug:Main Parts,Types And How It Works by obafemee80(op): 1:17am On Jul 05, 2017
Types of Spark Plugs:

On the basis of the relative operating temperature range of the tip of the high tension electrode,it is divided into two types.

Hot spark plug: It has long heat transfer path and a large area exposed to the combustion gases. A “hot plug” transfer heat at a much slower rate, which keeps the firing tip hotter.

Cold spark plug: It has short heat transfer path and small area exposed to the combustion gasses.
A “cold plug” transfers heat rapidly from the firing tip into the engine head, keeping the firing tip cooler.

Carmakers determine which type of plug should be used in each car. When cars have high-performance engines, they generate more heat. Therefore, they're better off with colder plugs. If the spark plug were to get too hot, it would ignite the fuel before the spark even fired. That's why it's very important to use the specific type of plug that your car manual mandates.

Working:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dea07uYGkps

+When a high voltage current from the distributor is passes to the spark plug.

+The central electrode and ground electrode is applied to a very high voltage up to 40000 V.

+Due to this high voltage difference between the central electrode and ground electrode, the air in between the electrode gap gets ionized.

+The ionized gas becomes conductor and conducts current from central electrode to the ground electrode producing spark.

+The spark produced is used to ignite the air-fuel mixture in the engine cylinder.

What brand of sparkplug do you use and how often do you change your sparkplugs?

Spark Plug is a device which is used to ignite the air fuel mixture in the engine cylinder. They are generally used in petrol engine. For the combustion of the fuel,we need spark to initiate the combustion.

Main Parts:

1)Plug Terminal: It is the portion that is connected to the high tension cable coming from the distributor cap. It conducts the high voltage to the central electrode.

2)Ceramic Insulator: It is made up of Aluminum oxide ceramic and acts as an insulator. It separates the central electrode from earth at up to 40000 Volts. It can be manufactured in plain form or with profiles to prevent flashover.

3)Metal Body: it is steel shell manufactured with precision rolled threads for a secure fit, and easy installation and removal. It provides electrical ground to the cylinder head and helps to cool plug by transferring heat to the cylinder head.

4)Central Electrode: It is made nickel based alloys consists of a copper core enclosed in it. Depending upon the type, the central electrode can be in platinum or iridium. The high voltage is applied to the central electrode from the secondary winding through the distributor.

5)Ground Electrode:  It is welded to the metal body of the Sparkplug. It makes spark path with the central electrode. It is made up of nickel based alloys( or iridium or titanium reinforcement)

6)Sealing washer/ Gasket: It makes sealing with the cylinder head and helps in heat dissipation.

7)Insulator tip: It is extended into the combustion chamber. It has greater influence on the thermal rating of the spark plug.

8 )Electrode Gap: It is the distance in between the central electrode and ground electrode. The electrode has crucial role in the spark generation. If an appropriate gap is not provided to the plug than if cannot produce sufficient spark to ignite the fuel and may leads to misfire.

BMW i8 Roadster: First look At The Production Version Of The Soft-top Hybrid Super Car

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzoxKDXHywU

BMW has released a video teasing the final design of the much-anticipated third member of the "i family", the 2018 BMW i8 Roadster.

The short clip shows a camouflaged i8 Roadster that from the front looks, understandably, very similar to the current i8, complete with gull-wing doors, but as the footage continues a brief glimpse of the final roof set-up is revealed.

The BMW i8 Roadster will be a two-seater, rather the the "2+2" configuration of the current i8. The roof mechanism will reportedly be electronic in operation, and will likely fold down into where the rear seats were in the hardtop i8.

The rest is speculation, with the roadster expected to get an enhanced version of the powertrain from the i8 coupe — 1.5-litre turbocharged 3-cylinder and a synchronous motor fueled by a 7.1 kWh lithium ion battery.

Since BMW doesn’t like to simply drop an existing powertrain into a new vehicle, expect some power boosts and possibly extended range from a bigger battery pack.

Car Talk › Ford Recalls More Than 400,000 Vehicles For Safety And Compliance Issues by obafemee80(op): 4:41pm On Jun 30, 2017

*The safety recall will impact approximately 400,000 2015-17 Ford Transit van or bus vehicles.

*The affected Ford Transit vehicles were built in the company's Kansas City assembly plant from Jan. 17, 2014 to June 15, 2017, Ford said.

*Ford has also issued two safety compliance recalls.

Ford Motor issued another costly recall Wednesday, this time for the Transit van, as it grapples with rising expenses related to quality issues.

The campaign covers 2015 through 2017 model-year Transits assembled at the automaker's plant in Kansas City from Jan. 17, 2014, to June 15, 2017.

The recall will cost Ford $142 million, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, dealing another blow to the bottom line because of quality issues. The company also suffered a setback when it recently recalled nearly 2.4 million vehicles to repair doors that could fly open while in motion, costing $640 million.

On the Transit, defective flexible coupling could cause separation of the drive shaft, cutting off motive power, causing the vehicle to move while parked or damaging surrounding parts.

Ford said it had not identified any crashes or injuries connected to the defect.

The company said it had not yet figured out how to permanently fix the defect. But it said the Transit does not need to be repaired until the vehicle has been driven for 30,000 miles.

For now, Ford will replace the flexible coupling every 30,000 miles "until the final repair is available and completed," the company said in a statement.

Just last week I suddenly discovered that my battery couldn't start my car. I called my brother who is a mechanic to advise me on which battery I should buy, he told me that the battery can still serve me for like one year or more during which I can raise some money to purchase a new battery.

He said I should bring the battery to his workshop and he will give it to an electrician who will remove the old acid and put a new raw acid. He told me that any good battery can still work when the acid is changed provided the cell is still intact.
I dont know how true it is...
I think you should give your bro a chance to see if the battery can be revived and reconditioned to hold a charge.
Car Talk › Tips To Buy The Best Car Batteries For Your Car by obafemee80(op): 12:00am On Jun 28, 2017

A battery is one of the most important parts of your car. The efficiency of the battery has an effect on the general efficiency of your car. In order to ensure that your car starts and runs efficiently, you should only buy good car batteries. The following tips will help you in identifying a good car battery.

Size and Type:
Size in this context refers to width, length, and height of the battery. The rights size will perfectly fits securely in your car's battery tray. This prevents battery damage by keeping vibration to a minimum.A car battery that is too small can rattle around in the battery tray and suffer short life.

Shelf Life:
It is not advisable to buy a car battery that has been on a store shelf for more than six months because batteries lose their strength over time, even when they are not in use. You can verify this information by checking the date stamp code. The date gives you specifics on the year of manufacturing.

Maintenance Free:
There are two types of batteries with regard to maintenance requirements – low maintenance and maintenance free.
Low maintenance batteries would require you to top up distilled water every so often. These batteries are good if you live in hot areas. Maintenance-free batteries do not require water to be added.
Low-maintenance batteries are cheaper compared to maintenance-free batteries.

Check the CCA(Cold Cranking Amps):
Checking the CCA – cold-cranking amps – enables you to determine the ability of the battery to start your car even during extremely cold conditions. The CCA also indicates the amount of current a battery can sustain for 30 seconds at zero-degree temperature.Higher CCA is recommended, especially for cars in cold areas.

Tips on Choosing the Suitable Cold-Cranking Amps Rating for your Car Battery:
Check your owner's manual/battery top to check the CCA rating specified for your car battery.

Do not choose batteries with CCA rating which is much lower or much higher to the rating recommended by your car's manufacturer.

If both your car's battery brand and exact CCA rating level are not available, you may choose a bit higher(not much and not lower)your car's CCA requirements.

Consider The Reserve Capacity(RC):
Before you buy a car battery, you should know how long that particular battery could run using its power alone. This rating indicates the number of minutes a fully charged battery at 80 ° F will discharge 25 amps until the battery drops below 10.5 volts.Should your alternator fail,a battery with a good reserve capacity will save the day, allowing you to start the vehicle within a certain time frame.

A Strong Warranty:

Look for at least a three-year replacement warranty. Some brands offer longer warranties,or a prorated refund if your battery dies within a certain time after the replacement warranty expires.

Science/Technology › EU Fines Google A Record $2.7 Billion For Abusing Product Searches by obafemee80(op):
The European Commission's long-running investigation into Google has finally come to an end, and it's not good news for the search giant. Commissioner Margrethe Vestager confirmed today that the company has been fined €2.42 billion ($2.72 billion) for unfairly directing users to its own products rather over those of its rivals. It's the biggest financial penalty the Commission has ever handed out, eclipsing the €1.06 billion ($1.4 billion) charge incurred by Intel back in 2014.

In a statement, Vestager said: "Google has come up with many innovative products and services that have made a difference to our lives. That's a good thing. But Google's strategy for its comparison shopping service wasn't just about attracting customers by making its product better than those of its rivals. Instead, Google abused its market dominance as a search engine by promoting its own comparison shopping service in its search results, and demoting those of competitors.

"What Google has done is illegal under EU antitrust rules. It denied other companies the chance to compete on the merits and to innovate. And most importantly, it denied European consumers a genuine choice of services and the full benefits of innovation."

The European Union's antitrust authority had been looking into Google's unfair search practices since 2010. Google and the Commission's previous chief made numerous attempts to settle over the years, but nothing was resolved.

However, an investigation was finally opened in April 2015, with Google being brought to task over the prominence of its price comparison service Google Shopping. It accused Google of unfairly weighting results so that when a user performed a search for a product, its own service would always return items either at or near the top of the search results.

Evidence showed that rival sites like Kelkoo and Twenga weren't given an equal chance, with some appearing only on page four of Google's native (or algorithmic) search results. Google's shopping service wasn't subject to its own generic search algorithms, so it didn't see any drastic demotions.

Although it's not illegal for Google to be the dominant search engine, it does have a responsibility to ensure it doesn't abuse its position by taking actions that negatively affect its competition. This includes tweaking its results so that its own services appear higher in the results than links to sites operated by rival shopping sites. By doing this, Google was "depriving European consumers of genuine choice and innovation."

The Commission found that when Google Shopping links applied the tweak, rival websites in France saw traffic dip by 80 percent, rising to 85 percent and 92 percent in the UK and Germany respectively. "These sudden drops could also not be explained by other factors," the Commission said. "Some competitors have adapted and managed to recover some traffic but never in full."

In a blog post, Kent Walker General Counsel at Google said that the Commission's decision "underestimates the value" of its price comparison service and that the company will seek to appeal the ruling. "Given the evidence, we respectfully disagree with the conclusions announced today," Walker added. "We will review the Commission's decision in detail as we consider an appeal, and we look forward to continuing to make our case."

Google has been told that it must comply with the ruling and "end the conduct" within 90 days or face additional fines. Penalty payments can reach up to 5 percent of Alphabet's -- Google's parent company -- daily average worldwide revenue. Google must decide how it will achieve this and must notify the European Commission within 60 days of its plans.

It could get worse for Google, too. Not only can regulators from each EU member state now file their own civil actions for damages, but the search giant is also the subject of two other European Commission probes.

The first concentrates on the Android operating system, in particular Google's alleged offer of unfair deals to Android phone makers to promote its own apps and services. The other relates to Adsense and how Google has potentially abused its position by restricting third-parties from displaying search advertisements.
