Car Talk › 10 Tips To Keep Your Car Safe From Break-ins And Theft by obafemee80(op): 2:22am On Jun 27, 2017

Aside from having your car stolen, having someone break into your car is perhaps one of the most violating things that can happen to your vehicle.Just knowing that someone has broken into your car, looked through your things, and stolen your personal things can evoke a strong emotional reaction. There is no way to completely stop anyone from breaking into your car,but here are tips to help prevent car break-ins.
1)Carefully consider where you park your vehicle:
The more concealed/hidden your car is,the more likely it is stolen completely.Criminals don't want to be seen,so leaving your car in a well-lit and/or populated are is always best.
Alternatively, car parks with security features such as cctv, manned barriers or gated entry will offer greater peace of mind.

2)Owning a Toyota and Honda:
Toyota and Honda cars are some of the most likely vehicles to get ripped/stripped off.
They are easy to resell as there is a large demand for there spare parts.
It's important to know the worth of your vehicle, where you're driving it,how high-risk it is,and how you can protect against it.

3)Always ensure that your vehicle is locked before walking away from it:
Make sure you hear a locking noise, watch for lights flashing or mirrors folding,or just pull the door handle.

4)Don’t leave valuables on display in your vehicle to tempt opportunist thieves:
Keep your nice valuables in a compartment,or the best option, bring it with you.Replacing your goods and your window is not worth the few seconds it'll take to properly secure your tempting items.

5)Audio systems draw the attention of thieves even if there are no other valuables in sight:
An expensive audio unit usually indicates other concealed items like a subwoofer and amplifier in the trunk. If you have an expensive audio system, remove the radio faceplate from the head unit each time you leave your car.

6)Close all the car’s windows, even if you are only leaving it for a few minutes:
An open window makes it easier for a thief to get inside a vehicle.

7)Does your car has an alarm or immobiliser?
If not, invest in an aftermarket alarm, steering wheel lock or other locking device. These do actually deter thieves.
Modern car alarms can include options such as motion sensors, knock sensors or a sirens if there is any unauthorized entry into your car, bonnet or the boot.

8 )Don’t roll your window down the whole way:
When a stranger approaches your window, roll it down only enough to talk, and not enough for them to reach into your window.

9)Tint your car’s windows:
A window tint can obscure the view of your car’s interior and thereby, protect your car from thieves. If a thief can’t see inside your car to determine if there is anything of value, they will move onto the another vehicle instead.

10)GPS Vehicle Tracking Service:
You can also secure your car by installing a GPS tracking device system in your car for fast theft recovery and location monitoring.

If the car thief has a weapon, give up the car with no questions asked.Your life is worth more than a car.

I did not see the regular car door on the list. What is it called?
No 1 on the list and it is called Conventional/regular door.
Car Talk › Different Car Door Types You Need To Know by obafemee80(op):

There are nine major door types,or eight if we don’t count the conventional ones:conventional doors, butterfly doors, suicide doors,gull-wing doors, scissor doors, sliding doors, canopy doors, dyhedral doors and swan doors. We won’t go too far into history and analyze their pros and cons, but instead we’re going to present their structure and name a few cars using them.
1)Conventional(Regular)Doors:

A conventional door, also known as a regular door is a type of door that is hinged at the front-facing edge of the door, and so allows the door to swing outward from the body of the car. These doors are relatively safe, in that if they are opened during forward motion of the vehicle, the wind resistance will work against the opening door, and will effectively force its closure.
A few models using the conventional doors are Toyota Rav4,
Audi R8 and Mercedes-Benz CLS

2)Butterfly Doors:

Very similar to scissor doors, the butterfly system allows the doors to move outwards and then up,which indeed improves the access.Still, they can also affect the interior space, but this isn’t quite of the main focus for the aforementioned models.
A few models using butterfly doors are Ferrari Enzo Ferrari, Saleen S7,Mercedes Benz SLR McLaren and McLaren F1, although some of them use rely on slightly modified systems.

3)Suicide Doors:

In just a few words, suicide doors are actually those that hinge from the rear end of the door, which means they open in the opposite direction.
Wondering why they’re called “suicide”? The nickname is mainly due to the design's propensity to seriously injure anyone exiting or entering the offside of the car if the door is hit by a passing vehicle and also due to the potential for the door to fly open when the latch was released while car was in motion .
Cars using suicide doors include the Opel Meriva,Rolls Royce Phantom/Wraith,Spyker D12,the 1940 Peugeot 601,2015 F-150 and the 2011 Mazda RX-8.

4)Gull-wing Doors:

Gullwing doors are actually hinged at the roof and opening upwards.
Inspired from seagull(bird)wings, this exotic design not only contributes to a more aggressive look, but it’s also very useful in crowded cities, where parking space is very limited.
Among the models that relied on gullwing doors are the new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG,Gumpert Apollo,DeLorean DMC-12 and Pagani Huayra.

5)Scissor Doors:

The whole system is quite simple because scissor doors use a typical hinge mounted at the front of the door, but instead of rotating outwards as it happens in the case of a conventional door, they go up,using a vertical configuration.
Obviously useful in tight parking, spaces, scissor doors can be seen on Lamborghini Aventador, Diablo,Murcielago and Reventon,Spyker C8 and C12 Zagato and Bugatti EB110

6)Sliding Doors:

There’s no doubt you know what’s that a sliding door and you most likely see one every day on minivans or commercial vehicles which use such a configuration for easy access.
The doors are in most cases mounted on a track,so it’s enough to slide it horizontally to open any of them. What’s more interesting is that car manufacturers have adopted sliding doors for passenger cars as well, mostly in an attempt to improve passenger access and make our lives easier when fighting with the lack of parking spaces.
1954 Kaiser Darrin is one of the models that used sliding doors,so also is Peugeot 1007,Citroen C8,Chrysler Voyager and Kia Sedona, although some of these adopted a more or less altered configuration.

7)Canopy Doors:

A canopy is a type of door which sits on top of a car and lifts up in some way,to provide access for passengers. It is similar to an aircraft canopy.
A vehicle canopy is a rarely used type of door for cars.It has no official name so it is also known as an articulated canopy, bubble canopy, cockpit canopy, canopy door,or simply a canopy.
Cars using suicide doors include the Saab Aero-X and Sterling Nova.

cool Dihedral Doors:

They open by rotating 90° at the hinge.Cars using dihedral doors include the Koenigsegg Agera,Koenigsegg Agera R and Koenigsegg Regera

9) Swan doors:

They open outward like either a conventional door or a suicide door, but hinge slightly upward as well for better ground clearance, includes some vehicles such Aston Martin CC100 Speedster and Aston Martin DB9.

There is also a not so popular BMW Isetta 600,
with Front Hinged door. The adorable Isetta bubble car fitted the brief for compact postwar mobility for the masses, with its 2.3-metre by 1.3-metre footprint and teeny 236cc, 9bhp engine.

Car Talk › The Ten Most Important Safety Advancements In Automotive History by obafemee80(op): 10:54pm On Jun 22, 2017
Automakers are continually increasing our confidence in the ability of cars to save our lives in the event of a terrible accident. Crumple zones, airbags, and safety belts are just the start. Now we have electronic aids that actively try and prevent a car from crashing.
The Ten Most Important Safety Advancements In Automotive History

1)Three-Point Safety Belt

Volvo introduced the three-point safety belt back in 1959.You can have airbags,ABS or whatever traction control you like, but Three-point safety belt might just be keeping you the safest. And they just keep working.

2)Unleaded Fuel

Lead is toxic, and having it in the air was bad for mankind. The National Bureau of Economic Research states that the average national IQ in America went up a few points after we stopped leaking lead around from our petrol.
Leaded petrol was introduced by General Motors back in 1923,and even before it was put on sale several of GM's staff were fatally poisoned during their research.

3)The Safety Cell(Impact Absorption)

Safety cell design re-imagines cars with soft crumple-zones on the ends and a rigid cage in the center.
This is Béla Barényi's original sketch for the safety cell. Crumple zones absorb energy and there is a solid passenger compartment in the middle. The design was pioneered by Mercedes and is common to all cars today.

4)Radial Tires

You might not think about them as a safety feature, but radial tires are a big part of why cars are safer today than in the past.
Well, imagine it like this:diagonal tires were like tough balloons.Radials on the other hand have a series of cord plies reinforcing the tire, making them much more solid and reliable.

5)High-Strength Steel

New alloys, particularly high-strength steel now common in car design, make cars lighter and stronger. That's exactly what you want for both efficiency and safety.

6)Airbags

Not everyone is a fan of airbags, but let me assure you, hitting your face on a hard steering wheel and dashboard is a lot worse.

7)Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)

French genius Gabriel Voisin came up with the idea of ABS for airplanes, and the technology soon found its way to the automotive industry. Having good brakes is one thing, but if you don't know how to use them and lock up,they are totally useless. That's where ABS comes in.

coolSafety Windscreen

You know how normal glass breaks. The glass in modern cars stays in one piece, or if things get more serious, does its best not to cut you.

9)Disc Brakes

The two types of brakes used on modern cars are disc breaks and drum breaks. All new cars have disc brakes on the front wheels, while the rear wheels may use either disc or drum brakes.

10)The Collapsible Steering Column(Energy Absorbing Steering Column)

Collapsible steering columns were introduced to reduce the number of serious injuries caused by the impact of the steering column and wheel on the driver’s body in the case of a frontal impact collision whilst driving.

Magnets

Once the shredding is complete, magnets are used to select iron, steel and other ferrous metals from the shredded material.Other established techniques are applied to separate the rest of the non-ferrous metals.

The remaining shredding residue is still useful and can be used to produce new materials for many different industrial applications. In the past, this residue that is made up of textile fibres, plastics, and glass and even rust usually ended up on landfills. This has changed over the years as recycle technology evolves. Material separation technology has advanced and it is now possible to sort the shredded materials ensuring a practically zero landfill process.

Other components of the vehicles are made up from different types of plastics and foam etc. When the shredded materials are separated, three products are generated including hard plastics, shredder fibres, and shredder sand. The hard plastics come from the car dashboard and its other interior components. The shredder fabric consists of shredded carpets and seat cushions while the shredder sand consists of paint particles, glass, and other fine particles.

There are many uses for the left over materials, hard plastics can be used as reducing agents in iron production plants.
The granules can be added into molten iron ore and this helps eliminate oxygen. Quality iron is obtained once the oxygen is removed. This helps to reduce the use of heavy oils and coke as reducing agents during iron production.

These two agents are fossil-based and they release a lot of sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide into the environment, so any way of reducing this is vital. The shredder fibres are sometimes used in sewage treatment plants amongst other uses. These fibres can be introduced into sewage sludge to help it solidify. The fibres are a good alternative to coal, which is a non-renewable resource.

Gasification

Once the sewage sludge solidifies, the mixture is placed into a filter press to get rid of water, forming cakes. These cakes are then placed into incinerators and used to produce power and heat(electricity).

Over all recycling a car,van or any other vehicle has many financial benefits as well as environmental ones too.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBxKkoe2L08

Below is a basic outline of the steps that auto recyclers take when they embark on recycling a vehicle

Detailed inspection
First of all, a car recycling facility inspects the junk car to check whether or not the car is more valuable to repair than to recycle. If the repairing looks unprofitable, the recycling facility then proceeds with dismantling and recycling.

Depolution And Dismantling
The first step involves removal use able parts such as of tyres and car batteries. These parts of the car are removed manually.

Once this is complete the next stage is to safely drain away any fuel, oil, and any other liquids that are often present. The catalytic converters and batteries are removed for recycling.
For safety reasons it’s not advised to reuse the airbag system so the airbags are safely triggered and taken apart.

Some bits of the vehicle can simply be reused as spares, car parts are only stored for reuse if they are in working condition and there is demand for these pre-used parts in the open market.
Often car engines can be and are re-manufactured to a brand new standard but that’s only if the particular model is on demand for spares.

In most cases, any unwanted gear boxes, engines, and other steel car parts are dismantled to prepare them for separate shredding.
The ferrous metal material that is recovered after dismantling is sent to steel mills for use as ferrous scrap input.
This material can also be used as feed stock to produce high quality steel. Anything from new cars to bicycles and drinks cans can be made from recycled metals left over from the car recycling process.

Once all the recyclable car parts except metals such as iron and steel are sorted out and stored or sold, the only thing that remains is car body which includes different metals.  The car body is then crushed and shredded to reduce into a golf ball sized metal chunk.

Car Talk › Nigeria Highway Code-expressway DRIVING by obafemee80(op): 11:08pm On Jun 19, 2017

The term expressway means any specially assigned and restricted highway divided with un-traversable barriers with traffic in opposite directions completely separated from each other.
They are designed for traffic movement with minimum interruption but are certainly not speed tracks.

Violators stand the risk of being prosecuted according to the National Road Traffic Regulations.

Restrictions
Expressways are subject to very stern restrictions as given below:
•No animals
•No pedestrians or hawkers
•No pedal cycles
•No motorised cycles with capacity below certain specified capacity, except where tracks are provided, or special concessions have been given specially for motorcycles.
•No learner drivers
•No stopping
•No loading or unloading
Other restrictions on expressways relate to minimum and maximum speed limits and other regulations which are clearly posted on road signs. Always watch out for these.

Before Entering the Expressway
Make sure your vehicle is fit to cruise at a safe speed, has correct tyre pressure, and enough fuel; oil and water to take you to the next service area.

Expressway
When you join the expressway other than at its start, you will approach from a road on the right (a slip road).

Give way to traffic already on the highway, and then accelerate in the extra lane (the acceleration lane) so that when you join the inside lane, you are already travelling at the same speed as the traffic on it.
You should not exceed the prescribed speed limit for that highway.

Interchanges
Because of the nature and restrictions on the expressway, there are stipulated ways in which you may join or leave the expressway.

Special intersections called interchanges are designed to enable you cross, enter or leave the expressway without interfering with other vehicles.

The four common types of interchanges are the CLOVERLEAF,DIAMOND,TRUMPET and DIRECTIONAL.

Driving on the expressway
1)Concentrate
Traffic travels faster on expressways than on ordinary roads, and you will need to fathom up traffic situations quickly. Use your mirrors, and concentrate always. Watch out for vehicles entering the expressway.
2)Keep your distance
Do not get too close to the vehicle in front. Remember the "two-second-rule".
3)Maintain a Steady Speed
Do not move in jerks. There are both minimum and maximum speed limits on the expressway. Apply the common sense speed limits and the limitations of your vehicle.
4)Avoid Lane Hopping
Stay in one lane unless when overtaking. If you have to overtake, do so smoothly and do not hop. Overtake only from the left. Remember the LOOK-SIGNAL-MOVE routine. Be sure to check blind spots.
5)Never Reverse on the Expressway
Under no circumstance should you reverse on the expressway. If you miss your exit, go to the next one.
6)No Stopping
Do not wait or stop on the expressway. If you have to stop, pull out to the hard shoulder and post a suitable and safe signal. Do not leave your parking lights on to prevent other vehicles from running into you.You may put on your HAZARD LIGHTS.
7)Stop! If Sleepy
Driving for long distances may make you feel sleepy. To help prevent this, make sure there is plenty of fresh air in your vehicle. Stop at a service area, or turn off at an exit, and walk around for a while. Get off the highway. Take a nap if necessary. Avoid the monotony of the expressway which may hypnotise you into a fatal error. Avoid fatigue or the effect of drugs. If you are in any doubt or feel unfit, STOP driving immediately.
coolLeaving the Expressway
If you are not going to leave at the end of the expressway, you will leave by a slip road on your right. Watch for signs letting you know you are getting near your turnoff point, give a right turn signal, get into the extra lane (the deceleration lane) in order to slow down before you join the slip road.

Missing your Exit
If you miss your exit point, YOU MUST CARRY ON UNTIL YOU REACH THE NEXT ONE, do not reverse or turn back.

As You Leave the Expressway
When you leave an expressway, remember to alter your driving to suit the different conditions on the other roads.

Your speed will be higher than you think - a speed of 30km/hr MAY FEEL like 50km/hr. So be sure to check your speedometer. Observe the posted speed limit signs.

Car Talk › Different Car Body Types You Need To Know by obafemee80(op):
Car manufacturers from all over the world introduce new models and body types to attract new customers. New models often feature blends of styles and classes and it is often difficult to tell one body type from another. This short guide explains the different kinds of car designs out there.
Sports Car

A sports car is a small,two-door car, often two-seater, featuring exquisite design, powerful drivetrain for enhanced performance and sharp steering for great handling. These cars are usually expensive and purchased as second or third cars for entertaining rides.
Sports cars vary from economical Mazda MX-5/Miata to posh Porsche 911 and incredible Bugatti Veyron/Chiron valued at millions of dollars.

Sedan/Saloon

A sedan, also called a saloon, is a passenger car with a bonnet covering the engine and a separate boot for luggage at the rear. This is one of the most popular body styles of cars today, with seating for at least four people.

Sedans differ in size and class, which leads to further classification, including mid-size, full size, executive, luxury and sports sedans. Sedan is one of the most popular types of cars all over the world.Toyota Camry, BMW 5-series, Chevrolet Malibu are classic sedans.

SUV-Sport Utility Vehicle

Terms SUV and crossover are often confused as these body types have a lot in common, namely increased ground clearance, large wheels, aggressive exterior design. However, SUVs provide better off-road abilities as they are typically built on sturdy chassis, often borrowed from light trucks, have four-wheel drive and brutal design.
Jeep Cherokee,Range Rover and Mitsubishi Pajero/Montero are the examples of SUVs.

Hatchback

Hatchbacks feature a rear door, swinging upwards and providing convenient access to cargo space. Three and five-door options are available. The size of hatchback cars may vary form tiny city cars to large liftbacks. In most cases hatchbacks are powered by economical engines, but hot hatches are also available.
Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and Mini are the examples of this car type.

Wagon

Typically built on sedan platform, state wagon is basically an extended hatchback, featuring a larger cargo space. Wagons provide the same cabin space as sedans, although may feature an increased head space for rear seat passengers courtesy of extended roof.

At the same time, wagons may provide huge boot space, easily accessible through rear door.Upon folding down the rear seat row, wagons may offer transportation ability similar to that of vans. Famous wagons include Volvo XC70, Volkswagen Passant Wagon, Audi A4 Avant.

Crossover

Crossover is a new car body type that combines the traits of true SUVs and regular hatchbacks. Typically built on car platforms, crossovers usually feature an increased ground clearance, larger wheels.
Popular crossovers include Toyota RAV4, Acura MDX and Renault Captur.

Pick-Up/Truck

Trucks are utility vehicles typically used for commercial purposes. They feature a passenger cabin, either two-door or four-door, and an open cargo space with low sides and loading gate at the back. They are generally equipped with all-wheel drive system and provide outstanding off road performance and towing capabilities.
Toyota Hilux/Tacoma, Chevrolet Silverado are examples.

Van/MPV-MultiPurpiseVan

Vans, minivans and MPVs are all primarily designed for comfortable transportation of people. Commercial vans only feature the front seat row, with the remaining space used for cargo.

Car Talk › Symptoms Of A Bad Or Failing Exhaust Manifold Gasket by obafemee80(op): 6:57am On Jun 17, 2017

If the engine is noisy, causing performance issues, or smells burnt, you may need to replace the exhaust manifold gasket.

Engine exhaust manifolds are the metal components that are responsible for collecting exhaust gases and transporting them to the exhaust for expulsion from the tailpipe. They are bolted to the engine cylinder head(s) and are sealed using a gasket known as the exhaust manifold gasket.

The exhaust manifold gasket is usually a multi-layered gasket that contains metal and other materials that are designed to provide the best seal possible. As the exhaust manifold gasket is the first in the exhaust system, it is a very important seal that should be inspected if any problems arise. When it fails or has any issues, it can cause all sorts of problems for the vehicle. Usually a bad or failing exhaust manifold gasket will produce a few symptoms that can alert the driver of a potential issue.
1. Excessively noisy engine:
One of the first symptoms of a problem with an exhaust manifold gasket is an excessively noisy engine. A faulty exhaust manifold gasket will produce an exhaust leak that will sound like a hissing or tapping sound coming from the engine. The sound may be especially pronounced during a cold start or during acceleration.

2. Decrease in power, acceleration and fuel efficiency:
Engine performance issues are another common symptom of a problem with an exhaust manifold gasket. If the exhaust manifold gasket fails, the exhaust leak can result in engine performance issues such as a decrease in power, acceleration, and even fuel efficiency. The performance decrease may be minor at first, but will worsen over time if not addressed.

3. Burning smell coming from the engine bay:
Another symptom of a potential problem with the exhaust manifold gasket is a burning smell from the engine bay. If the gasket fails and leaks near any plastic components, or engine wiring, the heat from the exhaust gases may cause the components to burn up. This may result in a burning smell coming from the engine bay as a result of the components being exposed to such high heat. The smell may sometimes be accompanied by faint smoke. Any sort of burning smells should be checked out as soon as possible to make sure that they are not a potential safety hazard.

Car Talk › Symptoms Of Water In A Car's Petrol Tank And Ways To Fix It by obafemee80(op): 6:00am On Jun 13, 2017

There are many ways(either accidentally while washing the car, filling up the tank from the filling station or from condensation within your fuel tank due to weather i.e natural water condensation)in which water can accumulate in a car's petrol tank.

Subsequently, the compression and combustion of fuel, which is vital for a running car engine, goes for a complete toss.Such a situation is known as hydrostatic lock, where the engine refuses to start.

Be it a small cup of water,or a liter,it can cause engine problems and eventually, engine stalling.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPPsI6KUlrM

Below are ways in which water can enter a car's petrol tank, its symptoms, effects, and ways to fix it.

Causes:
● The chances of water entering the gas tank increases if the tank has a bad top fuel pump.
● Condensation of atmospheric moisture leads to accumulation of water vapor into the petrol tank.
● Another cause can be the poorly sealed cap on top of the tank. Therefore, rains or a regular car wash can prove to be a big disaster to the tank.
● It can also happen when ground water seeps into the storage tank at the filling station, thereby making the fuel pump to circulate water all across the fuel lines and the fuel injectors.

Symptoms and Effects
●Hydrolock
An hydrolocked engine has water inside the combustion chamber that prevents combustion and compression. The engine will be unable to start and possible unable to crank.
●Engine Stalls
The engine may be able to start and maintain itself for a while. However, the combustion will be weaker than normal and may lead to stalling.
●Engine Will Not Start
.The engine may turn over while the ignition is engaged, but the lack of the proper amount of fuel will prevent normal operation.
●Poor Fuel Economy
The water will reduce engine power, but allow the same amount of fuel to be burned. The result being the same fuel burned for reduced mileage.
● As petrol is lighter than water, when water enters the tank,it settles at the bottom of the tank.Eventually, the tank begins to rust.
● The watered-down fuel in a car can make it sputter and behave as if it has lost power.
● Water in a gas tank can lead to bio-degradation of the fuel.
● It can also cause microbial growth in the fuel, which will damage the entire fuel system and induce filter plugging.
● Certain other likely effects of this problem are holes in the fuel tank and failure of the fuel injector.

How to Get Rid of Water from the Gas Tank
● The best way to remove water from the tank is to change the entire contaminated petrol in it. Replace it with a high quality,non-ethanol blend petrol.Fuels containing ethanol have a short shelf life. They start absorbing excess water within a few weeks. They draw about 50 times more water than any non-alcohol petrol.
● If there is petrol left in the tank, then you can fill it up with high levels of octane petrol, and rapidly exhaust the petrol tank. This will leave the tank dry and exhaust all the moisture.
● There are products that contain special fuel additives and methanol, which help in removal of water from the tank. But remember, fuel additives will not work if the quantity of water in the tank is more.
● If you are unsure whether you have to drain the entire petrol out of the tank, or just add a fuel additive, it is always best to seek expert advice, consult a mechanic.Taking your car to a mechanic is definitely effective and will solve the confusion.
● If the water level is very high, you not only have to drain all the existing petrol, but also put in new filters.

Car Talk › Turbochargers Vs. Superchargers: What’s The Difference? by obafemee80(op): 7:04am On Jun 12, 2017

-turbo

-super charger

Turbochargers and superchargers both perform the same basic function:
They compress and push more air into the engine—generating pressure or “boost”—allowing more fuel to be used, and thus helping the engine produce more power. This whole process is known as forced induction, but because turbochargers and superchargers go about achieving this in totally different ways,it would be a mistake to refer to them interchangeably.

The turbocharger also called turbo uses the pressure from the exhaust gases to spine the turbine which is connected to the compressor to compress the air.
The supercharger uses a belt that is connected to the crankshaft of the engine and this is the power source of the compressor as it compresses the air.
The following are the pros and cons of Turbos and Superchargers.

Pros Of Using Turbos
-Turbos offer a significant amount of boost to the engine:
With turbos, even smaller engines can be able to produce enough power for the car. This explains why turbos can be installed in even the smallest or less powerful cars.

-Helps in maintaining good fuel economy: Small engines that are turbo charged use less fuel to idle. This means that the rational and reciprocating mass is less which is very good for fuel economy.

-More efficient engines:
Technically, turbochargers use energy that is lost in the engines that are naturally aspirated and supercharged. With this energy being recovered, the overall performance of the engine is improved.

Cons Of Using Turbos:
-Take time to provide enough boost:
Due to the turbo lag, the car does not immediately speed up. This is especially disadvantageous to vehicles with big turbo chargers.

-Compromise vehicle stability:
In big turbo chargers, reaching the required amount of boost can lead to a power surge. This causes the car to loose tyre traction which can cause an accident.

-Numerous engine oil refills:
Owing to the fact that turbo chargers get very hot, they try to get some of the engine’s oil. This means that you will always have to do some additional plumbing as well as numerous engine oil refills. This can turn out to be bad not only on the financial side of the vehicle owner but also on the entire engine.

-Threshold for the boost:
Normally, turbos are set for a certain range where the exhaust gas required is enough to offer more boost to the engine. However, they do not have a wide range as compared to the superchargers. This explains why there is occurrence of power surges.

-Can damage engine:
Due to the amount of power they produce, turbos have a high probability of destroying the engine.

Pros Of Using Superchargers
-More horsepower:
By installing a supercharger on an engine, you are assured of immediate boost for your car.

-Zero lag:
Once you engage the supercharger you will immediately get the results. This can be attributed to the fact that the supercharger is driven by the crankshaft.

-Easy to install:
There is not much involved when it comes to installing superchargers. In addition, the supercharger is easier to maintain since it does not need intercoolers unlike in the case of turbos which are known for heating compressed air.

-Save engine oil:
Since superchargers do not have to heat the compressed air, they do not heat up hence they do not tap into the engine’s oil supply.

Cons Of Using Superchargers
-Low efficiency:
Superchargers are less efficient compared to turbo chargers. This is because they are not independent like the turbos. The supercharger has to rely on the engine to generate the power it needs to run. A supercharger can consume as much as 20 percent of an engine's total power output. But because a supercharger can generate as much as 46 percent additional horsepower, most think the trade-off is worth it.

-More Expensive To Install And Maintain:
engines need to be larger and more durable to handle the explosive boosts that superchargers put them under. The need for heavy-duty parts increases overall price of vehicle.

Turbochargers are theoretically better at being efficient and at producing boost, but have clearer downsides like turbo lag and complexity.

Some critics believe that turbochargers are more efficient than superchargers(superchargers suffer from parasitic losses because they are spun by the engine crankshaft,as opposed to the exhaust gas-driven turbine in a turbocharger).

Which of the two do you prefer?

FIRE SCANDAL LATEST US-MARKET WOE FOR GERMAN CARMAKERS

The spate of mysterious fires in BMW  vehicles is only the latest trouble for a German car manufacturer in the US market.

Volkswagon is still recovering from the 2015 'Dieselgate' emissions testing scandal, in which it was found the German company had used vehicle software to intentionally trick emissions tests.

The company was sentenced in a criminal trial in April, has agreed to spend up to $25 billion in the US to address claims from owners, environmental regulators, states and dealers, and has offered to buy back about 500,000 polluting US vehicles.

Mercedes, another German carmaker, announced on Tuesday that it would not seek to sell 2017 year diesel vehicles in the US due to increased regulatory scrutiny in the wake of Dieselgate.

If you own a BMW, you may want to take it for a drive pretty soon as there’s been reports that the vehicles are mysteriously catching fire if they’re parked for a long period of time.

More than 40 parked BMWs have randomly caught fire in the US over the past five years with similar incidents in Sweden, China, India and South Korea, an ABC News report found.

And worryingly none of the models are under an open recall.

The mysterious fires reportedly range across several models, years, and generations of the renowned brand’s vehicles, which can cost more than $100,000 (£77,000)

A previous investigation into fires on BMW vehicles in South Korea led to a mass 1,700-car recall due to a possible fuel leak but it is unclear if the American fires are related.

The spate of fires has led to one man being homeless after his car caught fire in his garage and burned his house down.

In December 2015, Bill Macko and his wife had been in their home in Olney, Maryland, when they noticed a strange smell from their garage.

When they went to investigate, they heard a ‘snap, crackle, pop’ and then their parked 2008 BMW X5 burst into flames.

Though firefighters battled to put out the flames, it ultimately took over their entire home.

Seventeen months later, they’re still staying with relatives, unsure of when they’ll be able to return home.

In another case, the owner of a 2003 BMW in New York told firefighters that his car had been sitting parked for three or four days before bursting into flames.

BMW have denied that that there is an issue causing the fires that hasn’t already been covered by a recall.

A statement issued to ABC News said: ‘In cases that we have inspected and are able to determine root cause, we have not seen any pattern related to quality or component failure.

‘Vehicle fires can result from a wide variety of external reasons unrelated to product defect.’

The company also told the channel that fires could be the result of any number of factors the manufacturer can’t control, including improper maintenance by unauthorized mechanics, aftermarket modifications, rodent nesting and even arson.

At the bolded, what it means is that the carriers have heaters that will be activated during the winter/snow to keep car environment to maybe room temp.
Car Talk › Types Of Car Carriers Around The World by obafemee80(op):
Many auto transport companies have different types of tractor trailers to move your vehicle. Most of the time, your options will boil down to two distinct choices: an open-air trailer or enclosed trailer. These two ways of transporting your vehicle do the same job, but each one of them has their own ways of getting it done, and the subsequent advantages and disadvantages as well.

1) Multiple car open air:

These car carriers do not have a covering over them. These may have usual impacts on the cars. But mostly they:
•Are known to be the most cost effective among all other types of car carriers.
•Are vulnerable to damage but damages do not occur very often.

2)Multiple Enclosed:

These are enclosed on all sides and are long and huge. They carry cars in a safe way and usually are quite expensive too. Apart from that it also has features like:

•These carriers are covered so they provide better protection than all other types of car carriers
•They are more expensive
•They protect cars and trucks from dust and roadside exposed items.
•These carriers keep the cars regulated at a certain temperature – hence weather does not affect your car much.

3)Single open air car:

•These cars arrive fast.

4)Single enclosed:

Got a vintage car? Can’t afford to get a scratch? This is the safest carrier.

5)Single car carrier:

The single car carriers might be a better option if you are trying to carry around extremely precious vehicles, such as vintage cars and so on. These also have their advantages and disadvantages. The most important things to note here are:
•They are faster than the multiple car carriers
•In case you doubt that your car is going to get scratched or you want better care for it, single car carriers will suit you.
•It will travel streets more easily and therefore reach you faster.

Travel › 11 Ideas That Can Help You Avoid Traffic Congestion In Nigerian Cities by obafemee80(op):

So here are eleven ideas that can speed up the daily commute.

1)Pay attention:
Driving is an art and a skill, but needs concentration.Don’t get distracted by the radio, music choices or make up.Keep an even distance behind the car in front, watch out for problems well in advance and adjust your speed smoothly.

2) Leave at a different time:
By changing your schedule slightly, you can often avoid driving in Rush Hour, and therefore traffic.

3)Listen to radio traffic reports or check GPS live updates:

Tune into the local radio stations or better still, get live updates from your phones GPS or sat/nav unit. This will help you pick a route that will take you around the traffic rather than right through its heart, thereby avoiding bottlenecks, accidents and disruptions.

4)Accelerate briskly away from the lights:
Don’t put on make-up,drink or get distracted so that you don’t react to the lights changing. You’ll frustrate the drivers behind you and slow down others.

5)Keep Your Vehicle Serviceable:
Breakdowns are a major cause of traffic chaos. No car breaks down on purpose but a few simple checks minimize your chances of infuriating your fellow commuters.Make sure you have plenty of petrol in the tank and also have your vehicle regularly serviced.

6)Get A Motorcycle:
You can always go with a motorcycle,if you’re not willing to give up an engine-powered drive
Motorcycles allow you to circumvent most traffic jams by driving between cars and lanes.
Motorcycles have the added benefit of being more fuel efficient than most cars, and also affordable.

7)Keep Right
If you are moving at a slower pace than those in front of you, move over to the right lane(but not the BRT/bus lane). If you’re still slower in this line of traffic then you are impeding progress of others,so speed up to the allowable speed limit.

coolMerge carefully:
Sudden lane changes interrupt the traffic flow and can cause bunching. When merging, think ahead, don’t leave it until the last 10 metres to force your way in.

9)Go By Ferry:

Lagosians are increasingly abandoning chaotic road transport routes, and embracing easier, safer means of water transportation, using watercraft like ferries,to travel from Lagos Island to some parts of the mainland (Ikorodu).

10)Use a train:
Train transportation apart from been cheaper and more efficient than driving your car, travel at a faster speed.

11)Bike Or Walk:
Depending on how long your drive is,you can often skip the traffic by riding a bike or walking.
Walking at times will get you where you’re going just as quickly, while biking will almost surely get you there quicker,if there’s constant traffic.

Islam › More Than 130 British Imams Refuse To Bury London Attackers by obafemee80(op):
More than 130 imams from Britain are refusing to offer Islamic burials to the three men who launched attacks Saturday night in London, killing seven and wounding dozens more.

"We will not perform the traditional Islamic funeral prayer for the perpetrators and we also urge fellow imams and religious authorities to withdraw such a privilege," the Muslim leaders said Monday in a statement posted on social media.

The imams described their actions as "unprecedented," though mosques in Manchester, England, and in the United States have refused to bury Muslims involved in terror attacks in recent years.
Imam Abdullah Hasan of Imams Against Domestic Abuse, who posted the statement online, said the funeral rite "is normally performed for every Muslim regardless of their actions."

Seven people died and 48 were injured when three men drove a van into pedestrians on London Bridge, then leaped out and stabbed several others in nearby bars and restaurants. Police killed the three attackers.
The ISIS-linked Amaq News Agency claimed a "detachment of Islamic State fighters" carried out the attack but provided no evidence to back up its claim.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said there was "too much tolerance" of Islamist extremism in the United Kingdom as she vowed a clampdown in the wake of the third terror attack to hit her country in as many months.
In their statement, the imams said the terrorists do not represent Islam.
"We are deeply hurt that a spate of terror attacks have been committed in our country once more by murderers who seek to gain religious legitimacy for their actions. We seek to clarify that their reprehensible actions have neither legitimacy nor our sympathy," the Muslim leaders said.

"These vile murderers seek to divide our society and (instill) fear; we will ensure they fail. We implore everyone to unite: we are one community. In the face of such dastardly cowardice, unlike the terrorists, we must uphold love and compassion."
