Your car or van’s timing/cam belt (or timing chain) is a vital engine component, which degrades and wears over time. When left unchanged,timing/cam belt failure can severely damage the engine – an eventuality which is hugely expensive to fix and sometimes irreparable8 Signs your Timing Belt Needs to be Replaced 1. Material Loss Belt wear is just like tyre wear, as you lose grip you lose traction, which makes the timing belt slip. This is more likely to happen during high load use (pulling a trailer/caravan) or in wet weather. 2. Belt Abrasion This normally occurs when there is a tensioner or pulley misalignment, excessive heat or bearing failure. Your mechanic will notice the belt’s edges have been worn down to the filaments inside. 3. Cracking This sign of wear is self-explanatory. Your mechanic will inspect both the topside and underside (rib cross-section); if your vehicle has a neoprene timing belt and there are a lot of cracks this can indicate excessive wear, which needs to be attended to ASAP. 4. Glazing Glazing is when the timing belt has a shiny or glossy appearance on the underside, which means the belt has gone stiff and isn’t providing the flexibility needed. Your mechanic will check this by trying to put an indent into the surface of the belt. If it doesn’t leave a mark the belt needs replacing. 5. Pilling As the timing belt ages the material it loses can build up loosely in the rib cross-sections. This can cause belt noise and excess vibration. Your mechanic will also check the accessory brake pulleys for further material build up as they may also need to be changed. 6. Hydroplaning This occurs when water cannot be dispersed away from the warn belt and pulleys. The belt then hydroplanes on water between the belt and pulleys, which results in a loss of power to engine accessories. 7. Elongation Material loss can also change the effective length of the belt, moving the tensioner beyond its take-up limit. This will reduce overall tension and thus overall performance. 8. Misalignment This type of wear will indicate to your mechanic that the tensioner’s internal components may have failed. If the tensioner fails it will result in a high level of noise, vibration and produce excessive heat. When it’s Time for a Timing Belt Replacement Ask your mechanic what types of timing belts are available. If he offers both neoprene and EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) belts ask for the latter as EPDM belts have better performance and use superior technology. A neoprene belt’s life expectancy is around 80,000 to 100,000 km and as they wear cracks will occur, while EPDM belts rarely show these symptoms even at 160,000 km. But like any belt the EPDM range will wear down and still needs to be checked during regular services. If possible ask your mechanic to fit a Gates timing belt as they produce one of the most reliable belts on the market today. Your mechanic will also use a specifically designed Gates belt wear gauge to check wear rates on the new EPDM belts to make sure your vehicle is performing optimally. http://www.motoringabout.com/timing-belt-replacement/ Pics Credits: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timing_belt_(camshaft)

The Muslim Ummah is agreed that fasting the month of Ramadan is obligatory, the evidence for which is in the Qur’an and Sunnah. Allah says: O you who believe! Observing al-sawn (the fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become al-muttaqûn (the pious).” (Al-Baqarah 2:183) The virtues of fasting are great indeed, and one of the things reported in the authentic hadiths is that Allah has chosen fasting for Himself, and He will reward it and multiply the reward without measure, as He says [in the hadith qudsi]:“Except for fasting which is only for My sake, and I will reward him for it.” (Al-Bukhari). – Fasting has no equal (An-Nisa’i), and the du`a’ of the fasting person will not be refused (Al-Bayhaqi). – The fasting person has two moments of joy: one when he breaks his fast and one when he meets his Lord and rejoices over his fasting (Muslim). – Fasting will intercede for a person on the Day of Judgment, and will say, “O Lord, I prevented him from his food and physical desires during the day, so let me intercede for him.” (Ahmad). – The smell that comes from the mouth of a fasting person is better with Allah than the scent of musk. (Muslim). – Fasting is a protection and a strong fortress that keeps a person safe from the Fire. (Ahmad). – Whoever fasts one day for the sake of Allah, Allah will remove his face seventy years’ distance from the Fire. (Muslim). – Whoever fasts one day seeking the pleasure of Allah, if that is the last day of his life, he will enter Paradise. (Ahmad). – In Paradise there is a gate called Ar-Rayyan, through which those who fast will enter, and no one will enter it except them; when they have entered it will be locked, and no-one else will enter through it.” (Al-Bukhari). – Ramadan is extremely significant in Islam; the Qur’an was revealed in this month, and in it there is a night that is better than a thousand months. “When Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are put in chains.” (Al-Bukhari). – Fasting Ramadan is equivalent to fasting ten months (Ahmad). “Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and with the hope of reward, all his previous sins will be forgiven.” (Al-Bukhari). – At the breaking of every fast, Allah will choose people to free from Hellfire. Types Of Airbags: Airbags come in different shapes and sizes to protect almost every part of the human body in a car accident. There are even airbags to protect pedestrians that one may run into! Frontal Airbag: The 1987 Porsche 944 Turbo was the first car in the world to come equipped with dual airbags, for the driver as well as the passenger, as a standard fitment. These airbags are mounted on the steering wheel to offer protection for the driver and on the dash, to protect the passenger. Side Airbag: Side airbags offer protection to the occupants in case of a side impact. There are two variants. One is a side torso airbag, that is usually located in the seat, that inflates between the driver and the door, to protect the torso. The second type is the curtain airbag. As the name suggests, the airbag is mounted on the roof and deploys like a curtain to offer protection for the side. Curtain airbags have been said to reduce brain injury or fatalities by up to 45 percent in a side impact with an SUV. Some vehicles offer this airbag which protects all three rows of seats in an impact. Knee Airbag: Knee airbags are designed to protect the legs of occupants. It was first used in the 1996 model Kia Sportage vehicle and has been a standard equipment since then. This airbag is usually mounted under the steering wheel. Since they have proved to be very efficient, the knee airbag has become increasingly common since 2000. Rear Curtain Airbag: Rear curtain airbags are designed to offer protection to the head for occupants in the back of the car from impacts from the rear. The Toyota IQ featured this airbag in 2008. Pedestrian Airbag: First introduced by Volvo in the V40, pedestrian airbags protect unprepared pedestrians in the event of an accident. In a pedestrian test conducted by Euro NCAP, the Volvo scored the highest for pedestrian safety. Motorcycle Airbag: Even motorcycles come equipped with airbags to protect riders in a crash. Many have been tested over the years and in 2006, Honda introduced it in its production motorcycle, the Goldwing. Sensors in the fork detect and inflate the airbag in a severe crash. Airbags In Motorcycle Gear: There are motorcycle safety gear manufacturers who have been offering airbags in riding suits for MotoGP riders. These kind of suits are now being available to everybody. A small sensor inside the suit detects when an impact is about to happen and immediately inflates inside the suit, offering additional protection to riders. http://www.drivespark.com/off-beat/airbags-history-types-how-they-work-and-more/articlecontent-pf16836-008948.html |
The basic idea is that the airbag inflates as soon as the car starts to slow down in an accident and deflates as your head presses against it. That's important: if the bag didn't deflate, your head would just bounce back off it and you'd be no better off. 1)When a car hits something, it starts to decelerate (lose speed) very rapidly. 2)An accelerometer (electronic chip that measures acceleration or force) detects the change of speed. 3)If the deceleration is great enough, the accelerometer triggers the airbag circuit. Normal braking doesn't generate enough force to do this. 4)The airbag circuit passes an electric current through a heating element (a bit like one of the wires in a toaster). 5)The heating element ignites a chemical explosive. Older airbags used sodium azide as their explosive; newer ones use different chemicals. 6)As the explosive burns, it generates a massive amount of harmless gas (typically either nitrogen or argon) that floods into a nylon bag packed behind the steering wheel. 7)As the bag expands, it blows the plastic cover off the steering wheel and inflates in front of the driver. The bag is coated with a chalky substance such as talcum powder to help it unwrap smoothly. The driver (moving forward because of the impact) pushes against the bag. This makes the bag deflate as the gas it contains escapes through small holes around its edges. By the time the car stops, the bag should have completely deflated.http://www.explainthatstuff.com/airbags.html Pics below credits: https://www.scienceabc.com/innovation/airbags-deploy-fast-car-accident-threshold-working-mechanism-accelerometer-acu-sensor.html

Chelsea will finally get to lift the Premier League trophy on Sunday when the Blues host Sunderland in the club's final match of the season. Antonio Conte's men became champions last Friday after Michy Batshuayi's 82nd-minute goal secured a 1-0 win against West Brom at the Hawthorns. The result meant Chelsea were able to play without any real pressure in their first game since winning the title when they hosted Watford on Monday night. With celebrations taking place on the pitch after the entertaining 4-3 victory at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are now expected to put on an even bigger show for their last match of the campaign against already-relegated Sunderland this weekend. The Blues will then participate in the FA Cup final against Arsenal before conducting their official title parade a day later on Sunday 28 May to mark their success in the league, and potentially also in the Cup, in style. TEAM NEWS Conte has no major injuries to contend with, although, Ruben Loftus-Cheek missed the win over Watford with "pain in his back" which could result in him failing to make the matchday squad for the visit of Sunderland if he doesn't recover in time. It's a different story for David Moyes, however, with the Black Cats boss having several players on the sidelines. Jason Denayer and Victor Anichebe both missed the 2-0 loss away to Arsenal on Tuesday with thigh and hamstring injuries respectively. George Honeyman was also unavailable with a back issue although he could return for the trip to Stamford Bridge as could Steven Pienaar, who has been recovering from an ankle injury. But Jan Kirchhoff (knee), Duncan Watmore (knee) and Paddy McNair (knee) all remain out of action. Though they first appeared in the mid-1980s, run flat tires (RFT) are now more popular than ever. With some auto manufacturers making them standard in new vehicles, more consumers are asking about run flats, their advantages, and how using them impacts driving. WHAT ARE RUN FLAT TIRES? Run flat tires are tires on which you can continue driving after a puncture so you can take time get to an auto shop or find a safe, level area to change your tire. You can’t drive on them indefinitely, though. Check the manufacturer’s specifications to find out how fast and how far you can drive on your run flat tires. Some run-flat tires will allow continued operation even after a loss of some or all inflation pressure for up to 50 miles (80 km) at a maximum speed up to 50 mph (80 km/h.) HOW DO RUN FLAT TIRES WORK? There are two primary types of run flat tire systems: the self-supporting system and the support ring system. Self-Supporting Sytem:In most self-supporting run flat tire systems, the tire features reinforced sidewall construction that will continue supporting the vehicle in the event of air loss. This construction allows continued operation after the loss of air pressure up to the speed and distance specified by the manufacturer.Pics 1 Support Ring System:Support ring run flat tire systems, on the other hand, employ a ring of hard rubber or another structure that can support the vehicle’s weight in an air loss condition.Pics 2 Since they continue performing even though they’re “flat,” all run flat tires, regardless of the specific system type, may only be used on a vehicle equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). The TPMS alerts you as soon as one of your tires loses pressure. Without it, you might not know you were driving on an underinflated tire. BENEFITS OF RUN FLAT TIRES You don’t have to change your tire in dangerous or uncomfortable conditions. This is perhaps the biggest benefit of run flat tires and is the one of the reasons why they were designed. With conventional tires, you have to replace a flat on the spot or have your car towed. In a puncture situation, run flats are more stable than conventional tires. .Since they’re made to support your vehicle even when they contain no air, run flat tires will help you maintain better control in a complete air loss situation than conventional tires. As consumers continue rating safety high on the list of features they look for in a vehicle, the popularity of run flat tires is expected to grow. Since run flat tires work reliably with interconnected technologies like TPMS, it may only be a matter of time before they become the norm rather than the exception in new vehicles. http://www.bridgestonetire.com/tread-and-trend/drivers-ed/run-flat-tires

1) Not Indicating Apparently, the most irritating bad driving habit is drivers who don’t indicate. Without indicating, other drivers have no way of knowing what you are going to do. It’s not just annoying, it is potentially dangerous and could lead to an accident. 2) Poor Lane Discipline Undertaking, hogging the middle lane, and veering across more than one lane at once are all annoyances for other drivers. 3) Driving With Fog Lights On When Not Needed Other drivers really hate it when other road users dazzle them with their fog lights on when they aren’t needed. They should only be used in visibility under 100m. 4) Bad Roundabout Etiquette Slamming on the brakes, driving around in the wrong lane, pulling out when there is someone coming, and pulling on to a roundabout when your exit is blocked and clogging it up are all very annoying habits. 5) Very Erratic Driving Cutting in and out of lanes, heavy braking and acceleration rather than proceeding smoothly, unnerves other road users and can easily cause accidents. 6) Using Mobile Phone Whilst Driving It is surprising that this is only number 6 in the list of annoying driving habits, as it is one of the most dangerous, as it takes your eyes off the road. 7) Tailgating Continually driving too close behind another car is dangerous and very annoying. Leave at least a 2 second gap to the car in front, and 4 seconds when it’s raining. Pulling Out Without LookingDon’t put the responsibility for avoiding a crash in the hands of other drivers. Make sure you check carefully in both directions before pulling out from a junction. 9) Bad Parking Drivers who take up more than one space, park diagonally, or park so close that you cannot get in and out of your vehicle. 10) Speeding This is something we all tend to do from time to time, but it is reckless speeding in built-up areas that causes the most accidents and road rage. 4×4 – Are you ready for a rocky ride! •A four wheel drive is commonly known as a 4×4 (four by four) or a 4WD and the first use of the term ‘4×4’ was used for North american military vehicles in the 1940’s. •Afour wheel drive is a vehicle that has power from the engine transferred to all four wheels, rather than the common vehicle, where it is transferred only to two wheels. •The first four wheel drive car was made in 1903 by Jacobus and Hendrik-Jan Spijker. •Four wheel drive vehicles are designed to travel on soft and muddy terrain as well as on normal road surfaces. •4×4 vehicles have different suspension to normal cars, which means there is more wheel travel and space between the bottom of the car and the terrain. •4x4s and SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles) have the fastest growing vehicle production rate in the world. •4x4s usually have a high and low gearbox allowing the vehicle to drive at slow or fast speeds depending on the terrain. •Some four wheel drive vehicles are developed to always be in 4WD mode. Older 4x4s have a 2WD and 4WD mode, meaning you have to switch to 2WD mode whenever on hard surfaces. •Jeeps and Land Rovers are the most famous four wheel drive vehicles. •Often four wheel drive owners spend lots of money on their vehicle, which sometimes exceeds the value of the vehicle. http://tenrandomfacts.com/four-wheel-drive/ Pics Credit:Google

10 Things to Check when buying used cars popularly called Tokunbo or 2nd hand cars in Nigeria. You have to be careful when buying a used car. Things aren’t always as good as they seem, so it’s always recommended to get a mechanic to inspect the pre-owned car you’re hoping to buy. Here’s a guide to know what your mechanic is checking (or should be checking), and why. 1. Brakes - Transmission When it comes to ensuring you are buying a safe car, the brakesare one of the most important things to check. Does the hand-brake or parking brake hold the car on a hill? When it comes to the test drive, the mechanic will find a safe straight piece of road to test out the brakes. The brake test will determine that the brakes have a solid feel and the car brakes in a straight line. Also be sure to listen carefully for squealing or grinding noises. 2. Exhaust When the car is fired up, smoke might come from the exhaustpipe. If smoke comes out of the back of the car, the reality is that the car is trying to tell you that something isn’t right. Blue, black or white smoke means that there are problems afoot – or should we say a-soot? 3. Engine – Knocking and Compression When the mechanic fires up the engine, he’s checking to see if it idles smoothly, and then if there’s any rattling or knocking while the engine warms up. These can hint at several problems including sensor issues, or worse, engine problems. Knocking could also hint at poor care from the past owner, perhaps using the wrong fuel type, or abusing the engine. A compression test is an important and easy way to see if there’s anything wrong. Using a small tool inserted into where the spark plug normally goes, one crank of the engine will reveal if the pressure in the cylinder is ideal. If it’s not, then forget everything else. This car isn’t for you. 4. Oil Before dipping a dipstick anywhere, a mechanic will check for oilon the ground. If there’s some under the car, then there’s a likely oil leak. Oil levels needs to be checked and if the oil looks milky, dark or smells burnt, then you’re looking at some serious engine problems – or at the minimum an owner who didn’t change the oil often enough. 5. Radiator – Hoses The radiator is an important place to start under the hood. If the coolant is low, or rusty looking, then it might hint at some neglect from its previous owner. Mechanics will also check the radiatorfins to ensure they’re not flimsy and crumbly. Water hoses are also inspected closely to see whether they need to be replaced. 6. HVAC Assuming the car has air-conditioning, it’s important to make sure it works, and works well. A mechanic will not only ensure that cold air is coming from the vents, but that the fan operates on all speeds, and that the air conditioning compressor is not too noisy. Similar checks should be performed on the heater. 7. Instrument Gauges No warning lights should be illuminated on the car’s instrumentcluster, the car’s odometer should be working and the speedometer and tach should be reporting the correct measurements. This is something that is easy to gloss over, but could be an expensive repair if needed. 8. Lights The obvious here is to ensure that the lights are not faded or the lenses aren’t broken. Some people might use different bulbs which can cause electrical problems, or cause heating issues. The mechanic will be able to point these out, and check the overall condition of headlight assemblies to ensure they haven’t been replaced due to a crash. The lights can also hint at a car’s overall electrical health too if they’re dimming or flickering oddly. To get a perfect grade, all brake lights, headlights, highbeams, turn signals and interior lights have to be working properly. 9. Suspension - Tires Another quick thing to check is the suspension and tires. Pushing down on each corner of the car should give the mechanic plenty of information about the state the shocks are in. If it bounces once, and returns to its normal position, then it should be fine, otherwise the shocks might be shot. A test drive will help cement any suspicions about the suspension. Tires are another important factor. Ensure they’re not leaking air, and that the spare is in good shape too. Mechanics will check them for uneven wear which will hint at alignment problems. 10. Body – Dents – Rust Almost every car has some minor imperfections that will occur during its usual lifespan. Mechanics don’t really look for those, but instead are checking out panels that don’t line up properly, hinting at an accident or cheap repair. Paint that isn’t exactly perfect can also hint at some similar problems. Of course, the most important thing to check on a car’s body is rust. Bulges or blisters in the paint are troubling. Mechanics will check the body, underbody and frame for rust issues. There’s also the worry of a car that looks too good. A shiny new coat of paint, could be a method of masking rust lurking beneath. http://www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2013/07/used-car-pre-purchase-inspection-10-things-to-get-checked.html

The driver (moving forward because of the impact) pushes against the bag. This makes the bag deflate as the gas it contains escapes through small holes around its edges. By the time the car stops, the bag should have completely deflated.
