The city engaged extensively in trade and became wealthy. It was known for its powerful cavalry. The capital city was Oyo-Ile, also sometimes called Katunga or Old Oyo. The palace of the ruler (oba) was the most important building. The large market was the heart of the city. There was a tall wall made of earth around the city for defense.

The Oyo traded with the Portuguese for guns and horses. Their cavalry and guns enabled them to dominate the region between 1700 and 1900. Civil war and divide and conquer strategies of the Europeans eventually brought about the decline of the Oyo.

Also, you were there to witness the existance of oduduwa ?

Yoruba low self esteem as usual, rewriting o history is yoruba national sports.
It is very weird that the same yoruba who says a lot of things without proof also goes on to say that Edo need to prove their claims.
Can any of you yoruba-centric foools prove that Omo n'Oba n'Edo originates from ife ?
An other irony is that the fellow accusing Edo people of having a "story pregnant with fables" is the same who brings up a mythical figure "Oranmiyan" into a serious conversation.

Let me repete this to you yoruba lots. You are highly misguided and your efforts to deny your history is pushing you into madness !
Nobody originates from ife. Ife is just one small village/kingdom which had a shrine and that is all. Don't take my word for it, look at the precolonial maps. Also stop talking about "Edo-story". The documents I keep bringing are historical documents (made in the same period as the events they describe). We Edo are being objective and proving each of our points. Yet you yoruba madmen are still tcalling this Edo-opinion while you keep telling stories with no proof and confusing fairytales with actual history.

Reality check:

Moneywoman, here is more account of Great Benin exploits in Yorubalands. Copied from the scholarly work and research of a honest Yoruba guy.

"Eastern Yorubaland felt the impact of its powerful eastern neighbor, Benin. When Benin invaded Ekiti between 1818-1823, the aim was to quell provincial revolt and regain control over the region’s economy. Indeed by reasserting control over the trade routes, which linked it with Yorubaland, Benin strengthened the position of its long distance traders, the Ekhengbo (from Ekhen Egbo) (ekhen, traders; egbo, forest). Akure and Benin traditions agree that the invasion of Akure was precipitated by
a commercial dispute following an attack on a Benin tobacco trader, Ogonto, who was accused of violating an Akure law. Even though the information is scanty, it is possible to situate the Benin invasion at this time and the economic dispute at its root, within the context of the rise in the supply of slaves by the wars in Yorubaland and Hausaland. Benin traders would have desired to tap into the northern Yoruba slave fields as well as send foreign goods into the interior. They would have also wanted alternative markets, even if temporary, to counterbalance the disruptive effect of the Nupe political crisis on Benin’s trade with the Niger. Consequently, Benin soldiers, under Ologbosere Imaran and Ezemo Erebo, carried out punitive expeditions, which left so much destruction that the fear of Benin lingered on till the early years of colonial occupation. Several Ekiti, Akoko and Owo towns were sacked and in them were created Benin colonies under the Balekale (consuls).
With the victory, Benin reasserted its control over trade in Ekiti, Owo and Akoko, and Benin enclaves in Owo, Akure, Ikere and Ado-Ekiti became the nexus of trade between Benin and Yorubaland. Both Akure and Idanre traditions agree that owing to Benin commercial activities, a nineteenth century ruler, Deji Gbogi and an influential woman, Olokoju both of Akure founded Alade village/market (near Idanre) as a meeting point for Ekiti, Idanre, Ondo, Owo, Ijebu, Benin and Ijesa traders. Imported items such as guns, salt and metal implements from Benin were sold as far as Ilesa, Ekiti and Ilorin. This earned the Ekhengbo the distinction of being called the “first long-distance traders in Ekiti.” Although the Akure king’s list seems to put Igbogi in an earlier century, the reference to the importation of guns would put his reign in the mid-nineteenth century. Most significant was that commercial metal products point to the position of Akure as a regional market. As we shall show in chapter four, Benin traders undermined direct commercial contacts between Ekiti and Ondo for a greater part of the century.

Immigrants into Ekiti also included traders, soldiers, administrators and their dependants from Benin. These colonists set up farm in the forest straddling the Akure-Idanre border and occupied what is now called the Ọgbọn Ado (Edo quarter) of Ado-Ekiti. Similarly slaves captured by the Benin from some Ado villages and some refugees were settled at Ikere where they established Ogotun, Afao, Are, Iluomoba and Agbado quarters, all named after their previous towns."

Truth is Benin owned and still has claims to Eastern Yoruba. It is Benin territory.

Now if be it dahomey was under oyo empire that wouldnt have happened
Thesame dahomey h claim was under your pop has a little of edo pop ..came as well in d 1990 to revered the old empire in honour to adopt its name for it country
dahomey became independent around middle 19 century when oyo had already lost the north to afonja muslim brotherhood the empire can't stand again egba rebelled against oyo by killing his ajeles in egba with help of lisabi so they can't control the southern part of the empire again ..dahomey tried to muscle power by attacking egbas to acquire slaves for their slave market but they were dealt with seriously true they used female soldier in battle with egbas not Oyo which was a mystically approach in war to demoralized opponent but egba too reacted with use of female soldier led by iya olode egba madan tunubu they conquered the Dahomey army

- History Of Ekiti & its Roles In Kirji War.
-Carefully Compiled by: Raymond Ajeigbe ;

According to oral and contemporary written sources of Yoruba history, the Ekitis are among the earliest settlers of Yorubaland and they migrated from Ile- Ife. When Oduduwa arrived Ile-Ife, He met some elders there who are already settlers. Elders like Obatala, Agbonniregun Baba Ifa, Obalejugbe, Orelure etc. Obatala represents knowledge and purity, qualities that come with age and experience. Agbonniregun is praised as Akere-finu sogbon (the small man with a mind full of wisdom). It was known that descendants of Agbonniregun Baba Ifa such as Alara and Ajero were among those that settled in Ekiti, this led to the saying ‘Ado ni ile Ifa’ (Ado is the home of Ifa). After the collapse of old Oyo empire, a formidable town of Ibadan in terms of millitary with large economic size became a power to reckon with in the Yoruba land. Ibadan expanded their military tentacle around Yorubaland including all the Ekiti towns and Ilesha.

At a stage, the Ekitis/Ijesha could not bear the molestations from the Ajele (District Overseer) from Ibadan. Ekiti launched a togetherness campaign (Ekiti parapo) and seek alliance from Ogedengbe Agbogun gboro of Ilesha. This alliance is very importance because, no single town can confront Ibadan due to their large land, military size, economic buoyancy with overwhelming population.

Ogedengbe first turned down the offer because he also received a kind of military training in Ibadan and not ready to fight with them. Meanwhile, there was a period when Ogedengbe expanded his territory to Edo/Benin territory. He had already captured the whole of Owan /Ora area in Edo/Benin. Oba Ovonramwen sent a parcel of red sand, stony sand and gunpowder to Ogedengbe as ‘’aroko’’. "Look at this red sand, If the land on which you are standing is red, you are in Edo/Benin territory. Also, Gun powder means war, sand means leave the Edo/Benin lands and return to your stony land of Ilesha and fight the Ibadans. We will not attack you if you heed advice and we shall support your fight with Ibadan’’. Ogedengbe co-operated and considered alliance with the Ekitis. In 1870s, the Ekitis formed an alliance which they termed as Ekiti Parapo (Ekiti Confederation) to challenge Ibadan. Ekiti Parapo was headed by Prince Fabunmi Oke Imesi and Ogedengbe was appointed as the “Seriki Meyaki”, the Generalissimo of Ijesa/Ekiti Confederates Army. Ogedengbe declared war against Ibadan in 1877. Meanwhile, Ibadan had already had a trade problem with Egba and Ijebu in 1877, Ibadan traders coming with firearms from Porto Novo were attacked by the Egbas. Ekiti/Ijesha also seek for Egba/Ijebu alliance. In 1878, the revolt against Ibadan rule started with the massacre of Ibadan officials in Ijesa, Igbomina and Ekiti.

Egba, Ijebu and Ilorin threw their support and 1882, Ife also joined the alliance. This led to ‘’Kiriji’’ war of the rest of the Yoruba towns against Ibadan. Ibadan found itself fighting from five angles. In the east it faced the Ekiti-Parapo. In the south it faced the Egbas and Ijebus. Supplies of ammunitions are also coming from Edo/Benin to Ekiti/Ijesha army and Ekiti received some sorts of help from Ekiti Saro merchants in Lagos as well. As at that time, Lagos was already under British protectorate. Ekiti managed to get some more sophisticated guns, in which when loaded and fired, it reverberate echo in-between hills and sound as KII-RII-JII !..KII-RII- JII !...this unusual sound of gunshots gave the war its name ‘’Kiriji war’’. This war lasted for 16 years within 1877 - 1893. Ibadan was rounded up, food supply was cut-off from other parts of Yoruba land and shellings were coming from five angles but Ibadan stood up to the task and fight on. Efforts from Lagos, Alaafin of Oyo and Ooni of Ife failed, until British people thought French people might seize this opportunity to hijack the area as colony, then, they waved into the matter, declared a seize- fire and signing of “Peace Treaty” between the twenty-four Yoruba Obas for the cessation of war in Yorubaland. This peace treaty brought other Yoruba towns under British colony until 1960. Both sides suffered heavy casualties but some historians claim that Ibadan experienced famine and suffered more casualties while other historians claim it otherwise.

Though, after Kiriji war, statistics showed that Ibadan maintained the third most populated city in the whole of Africa after Cairo and Johannesburg with buoyant economic. Meanwhile, Historians keep asking some questions that: how strong Ibadan army and economy could be, as at that time, to withstand such multi-attacks over 16 years with the ability to feed their army and protect large number of children and women&quot
