Part of the charge sheet read: “That you, Emmanuel William on 18 December, 2009 at same place and time did unlawfully had carnal knowledge of Beatrice Andrew while obtaining her consent by fraud.”

The pastor pleaded not guilty to the offence which is contrary to sections 357 and 360 of the criminal code cap 17 vol.2 laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2003.

He was subsequently granted bail by the trial magistrate, Mrs. Maimunat Folami, in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The matter has been adjourned till 18 January, 2010, but the pastor was ordered to be remanded in prison custody since he could not meet the bail condition in good time.

AS normalcy gradually returns to Bauchi after the religious crisis that engulfed Zango, a section of the metropolis last Monday, the state Police Command has confirmed that 35 members of the Islamic religious sect (kala kato), including their leader, Mallam Badamasi, have been killed in the shoot-out with security operatives. Two residents of the area and one security personnel also lost their lives.

And in a related development, the Plateau State government has allayed fears that there are plans to bomb some Christian centres. The confirmation came from the state Police Commissioner, Atiku Yusuf Kafur, who also said that 20 suspects made up of nine adults and 11 minors have been arrested in connection with the incident just as 18 injured persons are currently receiving treatment at the Specialist Hospital, Bauchi. Sixteen persons were rescued from the militants, he added.

Tracing the genesis of the riot, the commissioner said "it all began when the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Dutsen-Tanshi Police Station got a report that the leader of the sect, one Badamasi, preached a message that was considered heretic by his neighbours and, that it could lead to crisis".

Kafur added that from the report reaching him, it was later discovered that Badamasi, an indigene of Alkaleri Local Council in Bauchi State, preached out of frustration due to a strange illness he was suffering from and could not get immediate cure for.

He said: "He (Badamasi) was advised to consult the wife of one of his followers to get a cure for his illness, which he did and the woman told him that his affliction was caused by some of his followers who plotted to kill him and so, for him to get cured, he must get rid of them."

According to him, the discovery brought a division in the sect. While some left, others stayed with the sect leader. The inciting message Badamasi preached that fateful day, he added, was an attack on his enemies which led some of the residents to report the sect leader to men of the Operation Flush, a military outfit which subsequently drafted six soldiers to the scene and tried to stop the preaching.

Unfortunately, according to the Police boss, the militants killed one soldier on the spot and took his AK 47 rifle loaded with ammunition after which the group retreated and started fighting each other. The fighting later extended to other members of the society.

"The DPO reported to me and we drafted policemen to the area while the Brigade Commander sent his men for reinforcement." He noted however that the Police restrained themselves from using maximum force to minimise casualties, saying: "As my men advanced, we used (teargas) canisters aimed at minimising causalities and the militants soon came out of hiding while some were arrested."

The police chief said on entering their enclave, his men discovered dead bodies apparently, a result of the in-fighting among the sect members with several severed limbs. He gave assurance that the command was on top of the situation while security measures had been intensified to ensure that the crisis did not spread to other states.

Meanwhile, the state government has described the crisis as unfortunate coming at this period when people were in joyous end-of-the-year mood. It blamed the problem on misunderstanding among a religious sect, which was hijacked by miscreants to cause confusion.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Ibrahim Ahmed Dandija and made available to journalists, the government reassured the people of its commitment to the provision of adequate security for lives and property of all the residents of the state, calling on them to go about their normal duties without any fear.

The Plateau State government has also reacted to a press conference addressed by the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Plateau State Chapter which on Monday alleged threats to bomb some Christian worship centres and threats to the lives of some religious leaders.

Commissioner for Information and Communications, Gregory Yenlong, in a statement yesterday directed security personnel to intensify "stop and search" operations at all checkpoints as well as patrols in and around Jos.

The statement appealed to all citizens to remain calm and go about their normal and legitimate businesses as security measures had been put in place to protect their lives and property. It added that government appreciates the anxiety of PFN, noting that it has directed the beefing up of security in Jos and environs to check any act capable of disrupting the peace and security of the state.

Government in the statement appealed to the people of the state to continue to observe the curfew period already in place, adding that the operation hour of 7.00p.m. for commercial motorcycles remained in place.

"While religious leaders had been asked to continue to preach peace and tolerance among their adherents to sustain peace and mutual co-existence, citizens are also advised to cooperate with the security personnel who have been directed to intensify stop and search operations at all checkpoints as well as patrols in and around Jos," the government advised.

The PFN, through its Chairman, Dr. Sam Alaha, had, on Monday, alerted Nigerians and the state about plans to violently disrupt the fragile peace in Jos since the November 2008 mayhem.

Alaha alleged that there were threats to bomb some churches and kill some pastors and Christian leaders in the town.

Northern elders, under the aegis of Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) yesterday condemned the Bauchi violence. They called on the Federal Government to investigate the uprising with a view to bringing the perpetrators to book.

In a statement tagged: "Enough of killings in the name of God," the Arewa elders said that "we condemn the killings in Zango area of Bauchi State within a religious sect called kala kato".

The national scribe of the Forum, Mr. Anthony Sani, pointed out that Nigerians should know that "all religions teach the adherents the same message", saying that " under such injunctions, we are to love God above everything and to love our neighbours as ourselves.

"Therefore, few things are less pleasing to God like killings and violence in His name. Religious leaders should go as far as efforts can go to ensure that these tenets of love for neighbours and peace espoused by all faiths should find their ways into popular consciousness, in the interest of peaceful coexistence, prosperity and of a united whole."

Sani urged governments at all levels "to come up with opportunities for empowerment through which youths can sublimate their energies away from religious extremism."

The Northern elders prayed for the souls of the innocent victims killed in the violence and those who lost their property.

Elsewhere, the military authorities and the Police High Command have deployed more armed personnel to Bauchi State.

Police sources also disclosed that the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, directed that more mobile policemen be deployed immediately to complement the existing security forces on ground.

Another source told The Guardian that the re-enforcement decision was taken yesterday after a security meeting held at the headquarters of both the Police and military authorities in Abuja.

Intelligence reports had revealed that majority of the fanatics who caused the trouble were hired from neighbouring countries like Niger Republic and the Chad.

They come in to assist their kith and kin whenever they decide to cause confusion, pretending to be defending of the faith, said a source.

Before the recent crisis Federal Government had warned all the country's security agencies to boost surveillance at the borders as there were reports of an influx of arms and ammunition coming into the country through those routes.

Demuren, on Sunday, exonerated Nigeria and blamed the authorities at Schiphol international airport in Amsterdam for security breaches that allowed Mutallab to board a U.S. plane with explosive devices.

“We are the third world and they are the first world, why was the device not detected in Amsterdam? Why was the suspect not caught over there? The suspect went through the same security checks in Amsterdam that he did in Lagos, why didn’t they see it?

“He went through all our security checks here before he was allowed into the plane. Our airports are safe. We carry about 8 million passengers every year and there has never been any cause for alarm. There is no indictment on our system whatsoever,” Demuren told our correspondent on Sunday night.

Following a botched attempt by a Nigerian, Mr. Umar Abdulmutallab, to blow up a U.S. airliner on Christmas Day, security has been beefed up at various airports across the world, causing hours of flights delay and affecting millions of passengers.

The 23-year old Nigerian, who is the son of the former Chairman of First Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Mutallab, was arrested by the American authorities after he tried to set off an incendiary device on Northwest Flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit as it prepared for landing.

Some of the security measures put in place by airports’ authorities include further limits on carry-on luggage; more searches, including pat-downs; and requiring passengers to stay in their seats for the last hour of their flights.

Security sources believe that Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, 23, may have developed links with other extremists during the three years he spent studying at University College London.

The Security Service is concerned that the son of a respected Nigerian banker was “off the radar” while living in Britain from 2005 to 2008 on a student visa.

Nigerian arrested in second Detroit flight incident Little more than a year later he went on to attempt a terrorist attack after being trained by al-Qaeda. Officers are trying to track his movements and activities while in the country amid suspicions that he may not have acted alone.

Mutallab was under heavy guard in hospital after his failed attempt to set off a bomb on a passenger jet containing 278 passengers and 11 crew as it came in to land in Detroit, Michigan, on Christmas Day.

They suspect that he had planned to launch the attack from Britain but was stopped after being refused a student visa earlier this year to study at a college that was judged to have been bogus.

Dino Melchior, 50, was stuck in Chicago with his parents and two children after his flight was delayed by two hours due to heightened security in Toronto — and they missed their connecting flight to Hawaii.

“Apparently a new directive came out for people to be physically patted down and they weren’t prepared for it,” Melchior said, as his teenage son waited in line to retrieve their luggage. “I’ve never seen lines like that.”

The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said US-bound, international travelers should expect tougher screening measures, including pat-downs and bag searches.

Melchior described a chaotic scene as security officers without megaphones tried to organize the massive crowd at Toronto’s Pearson airport.

Each carry-on bag was emptied and searched. People were told to lift their shoeless feet for a quick pat after their full bodies were skimmed.

Screeners even lifted his daughter’s long black hair to make sure she was hiding nothing.

Melchior said he was disappointed by the delay, but understood the need for extra security.

“It was a minor inconvenience,” he told AFP. “Would I have liked to be on the plane to Maui? Yes. Mostly, it just could have been better organized.”

The new measures follow the botched Christmas Day attack by terror suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, accused of trying to detonate explosives aboard a Northwest Airlines flight with 290 people on board as it was set to land in Detroit.

Lines to get through security checkpoints at Chicago’s O’Hare airport - one of the busiest in the world - moved smoothly Sunday, with the screening process appearing to be unchanged.

“Everything worked like a charm today,” said Don Kawamoto, a TSA supervisor in Terminal 1.

“Everything was smooth. The passengers were happy. It was good planning by the TSA - we had enough people and it worked.”

Passenger Kamesh Nara, 25, said more work needs to be done to keep air travel safe following the latest attempted attack.

“How did he get it on the plane?” Nara asked. “It’s a failure of government.”

Nara, an engineer living in South Carolina and on his way to India see his family for the first time in two years, said he would not be deterred by the threat of terrorist attacks.

“Even though we’re nervous, we can’t stop. We have no other choice. We have to travel,” he said. “Being from India, we know the problem. We have to fight against terrorism and we need to strengthen our security.” Passenger Amy Timm, 31, also said she refused to let threats of terrorism affect her daily life.

“There’s nothing we can do about it,” she said as she waited to board a KLM flight to Tanzania.

Timm arrived early for the flight, and said she was surprised by how quiet things were at the airport.

“I’m kind of shocked. We were expecting heightened security and stuff,” she said.

In a statement, the TSA said it has a “layered approach” to security that “allows us to surge resources as needed.”

“We have the ability to quickly implement additional screening measures including explosive detection canine teams, law enforcement officers, gate screening, behavior detection and other measures both seen and unseen,” the TSA said.

“Passengers should not expect to see the same thing at every airport.”

Anambra State Association (ASA) in Diaspora has scored Governor Peter Obi 91 percent for the projects completed by his administration and the on-going ones.

This is as the Leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu , scored Obi 95 percent in the overall performance of his administration.

ASA’s delegation, which included ASA-USA, ASA-South Africa, ASA-Ireland and ASA UK announced the pass mark on Obi after a three-day tour of projects executed by the current administration.

ASA’s National President, Dr. Nwachukwu Anakwenze, said their mission was aimed at ascertaining the level of the stateís development, vis-a-vis projects completed or on-going, using an objective performance criteria to provide pertinent information to Anambra citizens as part of the associationís contributions to ensuring accountability in governance.

According to him, the 19-member group came as a result of Obi’s acceptance of their challenge to him to prove his claims.
The group stated that they visited 112 of the 150 projects contained in the three-year score card.

“Out of the 112 projects, 103 were completed, making it 91,” Anakwenze announced. According to him, “4.4 percent of the projects were on-going, while 4.4percent were done under joint government/private sector partnership. 1.7percent was started by the previous government but completed by Gov Peter Obi.”

It also debunked insinuations that there was division in their ranks, stating, ëí We were all together last night, we are not divided,íí even as it reiterated its warning against rigging at the 2010 election. ëíWeíre not going to allow rigging and anybody who goes into that office through rigging will not be allowed to stay in that seat.íí

Ojukwu said this at the flag-off of Obiís Central Senatorial Campaign at the Ekwueme Square, Awka, called on the people of Anambra to return Obi for another second term.

He insisted that he would not allow outsiders to tell the people of the state how they would be led or the person to lead them.

That is the reason why I always tell people to be mindful of whom they marry. Marriage is not all about "husband and wife", but it is all about two different people with different background coming together under agreement to live together forever. I personally tell people to engage themselves in some family history search, spiritually, and physically. There are marriages that one will enter into, and things will work perfectly (though with some very minor shortcomings). There are some that are already doomed from inception. It boils down to the people involved. The foundation of marriage too matters.

This institution is the only one that carries the most mysterious way of living and thinking. One can be very good before it all began, but later change into a wolf and very gruesome. Dennis Rodman ones married to his hearthrob, but nine days after, sued for divorce. It is so unpredictable. That is why I always tell people not to force anyone into it. Parents should stay clear, because in a little while, they will die and go. These two fellow will live with whatever they have come to see for life. Where it is unbearable, they sue for divorce. Unfortunately, Christianity does not favour divorce, so one must choose prayerfully.

Who is after Nollywood star, Monalisa Chinda? She is now going around to events and premiers with an entourage which serve as her bodyguard. Recently, the actress has been seen at many events with a group of ladies who are neither actresses nor celebrities but who guard her so much that they won’t let anybody get too close.

However, the actress seems to be relishing the whole attention she is getting since her marriage break-up became public and now after weeks of keeping mum over the incident, she has gradually opened up and is ready to tell all.

Could it be that the comfort of having those drum-waisted ladies around her is making her so safe she can finally talk? Curiously, even when she is talking about her crashed marriage, the stern-faced ladies are always by her side maybe to offer succor.

ABOUT MONALISA CHINDA’S ALLEGED ROMANCE WITH LEKKI BIG BOY


Nollywood diva and one of the lucky showbiz personalities favoured in the Globacom Ambassadorial project, Monalisa Chinda, is allegedly said to have moved to a new lover’s abode in Lekki, Lagos. Also that the two personalities have been sighted on a number of occasions at Southern Sun, a popular hospitality haven in Lagos.

The rumour which has been spreading like wildfires, we gathered, is been distributed by some certain authorities, accusing finger, though, i s pointed to Dejo, her erstwhile husband and father of her baby. The sources alleged the sultry actress to have even been rolling in the hay with this Lekki big boy (name witheld) before the story of her marriage break up saga became a public knowledge.

Though, Mona as she’s fondly called by friends and fans is yet to comment on the real reasons her marriage collapsed, her friends, however, are said to have advised her to restraint herself from any media interview or otherwise.

The ugly rumour about her new affair, according to some of her friends, is baseless and it’s an attack of calumny on the beautiful screen goddess. “Mona doesn’t even have time for such now; she has been working on so many scripts. Right now as we speak, she’s far away from us where she’s shooting a movie and she won’t be through until in 10 days' time.“ We were told.

Attempt was made by this office to reach the mother of one daughter, Monalisa to comment on this issue and she said she didn’t have time for such issues and that “right now I am working. And as an Ambassador of Glo much is expected of me and I need to deliver so as to be on top of the game in Nollywood.” These were her words.

One of Nollywood fastest rising actresses, Monalisa Chinda, on February 20th 2008 christens her new born baby at her Maryland, Lagos home. The beautiful actress is married to Segun, a young man from Yoruba land, South-West Nigeria. The baby girl is to be known as Tamar Irejesu.
She was very delighted as she told us that if she comes back to this world she will still get married to Segun.She described the heavenl gift as a blessing from God.


Some of her friends in the movie industry such as Uche Jombo and Tracia Eseigbe were at the ceremony.UK based Kween Onokula, was also at the event. She came with a male ‘friend’. Mona’s friends such as Chichi Iwuanyawun, Ifeoma Mazeli and her sister, Nneka,were also at the event
Monalisa studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt,River State.She has played noticeable roles in movies such as Blind Obsession, Pregnant Virgin and Girls in the Hood.

Another thing I have rightly noticed that is causing this madness is the issue of new local government councils. Since these councils are not funded by federal government, they are empowered by law to embarrass people under the guise of tax collection. Until of recent, do you know that, business enterprises paid taxes to both state and local government on the issue of Tv. licence, Radio licence, advert permit, business permit amongst others, yet, states still come around for the same thing. It was as a result of the cries from the public, that Lagos state government brought about LASAA (Lagos State Advert and so on). Yet, the local government still come around for business permit, radio and tv permit, even when the state says all the above are enshrined in the current act establishing LASAA. To the state, LASSA collects these monies, and then shares it with the local government, yet the local government thugs still come around. How does one explain that.
