I cannot even remember the day I ate snacks in any of our carriers. Those puff-puff are supposed to be given to prisoners. They are very bad.

What do you expect from the family of those who contributed to the death of our beloved Nigerian Airways. Irrespective of the figure, I knew their hands are heavy into stealing. Is it not the wife of this same man that wanted to sell Nigerian Airways, through smuggling Air Nigeria into existence, but the workers refused!. It was the annoyance that made her sell the idea of liquidating the company, and introducing another carrier. That is how Virgin Nigeria came into existence. That family stinks of corruption. Even one of her children too was in the news of recent. So, we are not surprised.

I have not heard of american airlines but that doesn't mean they do it. For one, i know some of them sell bottled water and headphones on flights.

Meanwhile, what I see in all these is that, Aero is really trying, but they should not allow one or two bad policy(ies) to rubbish their record. I frown at paying N25,000 across the counter, while buying the same ticket N6,000 online. I know it is a thing of choice, but people are capitalising on it to make money, at the expense of Aero. How many Nigerians are computer literate, talkless of having access to internet?. So many issues are being generated from this offer, yet it is a thing of choice.

EFCC docks Kema Chikwe’s husband over N140m land deal

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dragged the husband of former minister of aviation, who is currently serving as an Ambassador, Dr.(Mrs.) Kema Chikwe, Chief Albert Chikwe, before an Owerri High Court over a N140 million land deal.
Chief Chikwe was arraigned for allegedly defrauding one Innocent Obi and obtaining money through false pretence from the same person in 2008.
Chikwe’s ordeal, according to the EFCC, had started in 2008, when he sold a parcel of land worth N140 million to Innocent Obi in Owerri.
But Obi was said to have discovered that he had been defrauded when he attempted to register the land documents with the Imo State government as he was told that the land he bought belonged to the government.
EFCC records also show that when Obi dragged Chikwe to the director of lands in the government registry, he was told clearly that the land belonged to the government and he(Chikwe) agreed to refund the sum of N140 million to Obi.
But trouble started when he issued a cheque of N40 million which turned out to be a dud cheque to Obi. Obi promptly petitioned the EFCC, which picked up Chikwe and arraigned him before the High Court.
He was subsequently granted a temporary bail, which will remain in force till January 11, 2010. EFCC’s spokesman, Mr. Femi Babafemi, who confirmed the story, said that one barrister Joseph Nsong acted as EFCC’s prosecution counsel, while Chief N Onyenucheya defended Chief Chikwe.

9 Youths Reveal ATM Fraud Tactics


Nine young men allegedly versed in breaching Automated Teller Machines were arraigned yesterday on a 22-count charge at the FCT High Court, Gudu, Abuja, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The accused, who revealed the tactics they used to employ in making good money from ATMs, included Mavwen Jefe, 25, leader of the group and a 100 Level Economics student of the University of Abuja; Omomoh Paul; Ogidi Ufuoma; Okuku Ogheneovo; Ejikeme Kingsley Chukwuma; Lawal Olalekan; Ovuakporaye Ejovwoke; Odurukwe Nelson Tochukwu and Churchill Jefe.

According to part of the charge, the accused persons and others at large, on or about September 28, 2009, within the judicial division of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, did dishonestly withdraw the sum of N464,500 from the account of one Apeh Samuel at Guaranty Trust Bank without his consent, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 287 of the Penal Code Cap 532 Laws of the Federation, 2004.

Also on or about October 9, 2009, the suspects allegedly withdrew another sum of N210,000 from the account of one Oladipo Adekunle Emmanuel at Guaranty Trust Bank without his consent.

On December 12, 2009, the suspects withdrew another N270, 000 from the same account. They also withdrew the sum of N156, 000 on October 12, 2009, from the account of one Musa Danjuma Mohammed at Guaranty Trust Bank without his consent.After listening to the charge, however, the accused pleaded not guilty.

Prosecution counsel Joshua Saidi prayed the court for accelerated hearing, saying the case was very sensitive to the nation.

He also told the court that it would be in the interest of justice for the defence counsel to file their motion for bail application jointly with different a affidavit instead of the piecemeal approach which they were already adopting.

Justice Talba agreed with the prosecution and adjourned the motion for bail to Wednesday, December 16, 2009. But counsel to the eight accused, K.V. Egbufor, presenting a medical report, pleaded with the judge to allow her client to be detained at the EFCC custody instead of going to Kuje Prison because he suffers from a kidney-related ailment.

The judge promised to write to the authorities of the prison to keep them abreast of the suspect’s medical history. He also fixed March 29, 2010 for trial.

The suspects, who allegedly specialised in cloning ATM cards which they used to illegally make cash withdrawals from victims' accounts, were apprehended by men of the Department of State Services at Nordy Meridian Hotel, along Utako district in Abuja and handed over to the EFCC.

The arrest, which was facilitated through a tip-off, caught the scammers unawares. Mavwen Jefe, who is the ring leader, allegedly confessed to the EFCC that he was involved in the scam. He reportedly said a friend of his who is a computer programmer introduced him to the business and sold the card writer with which they cloned the ATM cards to him at the rate of N400,000.

“I have a friend by name Ogene Oru who introduced me to this business. We used to repair handsets and computer laptops together in Warri. At first I didn't know it could work until one day when he got someone's ATM card details and brought it to the hotel room where we were staying in Warri.

“He input the card details on the laptop, then sent it to the card reader and swiped the card in it. The details automatically went on the card and we went to a nearby ATM machine, where we cashed about sixty thousand naira. So when I saw it worked I asked him to get me one. After securing a card reader and laptop, I moved to Abuja where I and my elder brother started the business.”

Mavwen further revealed to EFCC operatives that their victims were usually trailed at ATM machine points. He said they used to go around town looking for crowded ATM locations where they could not be easily noticed. They would join the queues and pretend to be waiting to make withdrawals. He said in the process they would spy on a victim's PIN number as he was inputting it on the system, the details of which they would take back to their hotel room where the cards would be cloned.

“What we do is follow people at the ATM machine, sometimes if they have problems using the ATM machines or when the network is bad, we pretend as if we want to help, collect their cards and quickly memorise the card details. When they are pressing in their pin numbers, we also take note. Most times we queue up with the crowd, pretending to be waiting to withdraw cash.

“From there we try to peep to see what numbers the ATM user inputs, and because we have crammed all the numbers and their positions, it is very easy for us to quickly memorise it. I don't go to the ATM machines often, but send my brother Churchill, who comes back to give me the details. I have an ATM card with UBA bank that I usually use. It doesn't matter if we use the card over and over again, once we get the details on the laptop and transfer to the card reader, automatically the new details will replace the old one on the card,” Mavwen said.

He added that he had made up to N3.3 million from the caper. Part of the money, he said, was invested in a micro finance bank and he used the remaining for his upkeep.

Another member of the syndicate is Omomoh Paul, a 26-year-old graduate of Mechanical Engineering from the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi. A close friend to Mavwen, he said he joined the group upon an invitation from Mavwen.

The third suspect, Churchill Jefe, 28, who is a brother to the ring leader, said he is also a student of the University of Abuja, where he is in his second year, studying Political Science.

Churchill said his brother introduced him to the caper, which made him quit his job of supplying construction materials to estate developers. He said he has made N800,000 from the deal since he joined.

“I am usually the one that goes to the various ATM machines to get the details. I would spy on the card details and immediately stored it on my phone, which I then forwarded to my younger brother in the hotel. When I got back, we sat down and cloned the cards together and the next day, we would set out for withdrawals.”

After the arrest, a search was conducted in their hotel apartment and items used in perpetrating their acts were recovered.

The items included two computer laptops, bank documents, GSM telephones, eight ATM cards, a cash of N136, 935, two cars and an ATM card cloning machine.

Barely three weeks after Aero Contractors commenced the sales of snacks on board its flight tagged ‘Sky Snax’, stakeholders have said that there is nothing wrong as the airline is only responding to the current economic realities.
Aero Contractors, one of the leading domestic airlines, stopped serving its passengers in-flight meals in all its one-hour domestic flights.
Speaking with Daily Independent in an exclusive interview, a former General Manger, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Sam Akerele, said that the economic meltdown, which has been affecting airlines, coupled with sky rocket prices of aviation fuel popularly known as Jet –A1, necessitated the survival instinct that Aero contractors embarked on.
According to him, “Economic downturn, lack of usual support from banks, high fuel price, low passenger volume, etc will lead to downsize or removing benefits to customers though they could move to other airlines”.
Akerele contended that the airline industry world wide including Nigeria is facing critical time and that government bailout cannot rescue the airlines from the condition they found themselves.
In his words, “The industry faces critical time ahead, government funds will not be sufficient except mergers and re-alignment.”
He posited that only four airlines might survive in the Nigerian aviation industry in view of the current global economic meltdown.
The former airspace manager called for the reorganisation of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and the Ministry of Aviation.
On his part, a former President of the National Cabin Crew Association (NACCA), Olumide Ohuanyo, said that there is nothing wrong with Aero Contractors stoppage of in-flight meals on its domestic routes to passengers, adding that the airline was only reacting to the current economic challenges in the aviation and other sectors of the economy.
“Fine there is nothing wrong with that, they are facing the realities of time and Aero will not be the first airline to introduce it”, he said.
Ohuanyo said that he is in support of the idea and other legitimate means of increasing its revenue, adding that it is better than the airline hiking its fare
In his words, “The bottom-line is generating ancillary revenue to shore up liquidity. I support it and any other known methods used to increase revenue at the expense of outright fare hike the a la carte system is coming let see as it goes”
Daily Independent recalls that Aero had announced plans to launch on board sale of snacks and drinks in all its domestic destinations commencing November 16th, 2009.
This service, the airline had said, is only available in the economy class cabin and that the new in-flight catering service give passengers the option of purchasing quality breakfast, lunch or dinner on board the carrier’s flights from a selected menu.
The latest product called ‘Sky Snax’ will offer passengers mouth watering choices ranging from sandwiches, toasted sandwiches, variety of snacks, beverages (coffee, tea) and soft drinks. The airline plans to make available menus online on its website, www.flyaero.com where customers can also purchase vouchers at a discount.

The Airport looks nice. I wont pay 300 million dollars for it though, I think they overpaid somebody.

I think I will agree with paddy_lo. Airport projects are very expensive. The total cost of building a run of that standard, is breath-taking. I will never exempt corruption in the course of it, but I will say, it is pretty expensive. A typical example is the Lagos local run-way. Though it was ridiculed with inflated cost, but the cost of resurfacing it was just too much, that the government had to participate. Corruption assisted it, by making the project run for almost two years. Till date, the runway, does not have light for night flights. That is what corruption and embezzlement can cause, and no one is saving anything about it, until something happens, then we will remember to ask questions. Why is the lighting delayed? What if there is a problem on the international wing runway, what happens to the whole airport.

Back to Akwa-Ibom airport. The building is not even the main terminus. The real terminus is very close to the temporary one, which is under construction. That building is going to be used for the VIPs. If you look at the number of seats there, you will know, it is indeed not for the kind of airport they are projecting it to be. The main terminus is a very big house that is really going to be astonishing, if the real plan is not tempered with.
