BusinessRe: More Attractive Names for Products Made in Nigeria by obong(m): 2:12am On Nov 19, 2005
i completely agree. using your own langaueg actually makes you stronger and more international. Hebrew is spoke by just 6 million people or so, same for lithuania and swedish. Thee languages give them identity and hence presence worldwide. using your own lnguage is so unique that it automaticaly becomes a brand
BusinessRe: More Attractive Names for Products Made in Nigeria by obong(m): 7:27pm On Nov 18, 2005
ajisafe, you're right. seun, you're wrong, my man. As for those saying they are proud to be africans, this is a funny way to show it. By erasing the the very african name.

By the way, how did toyota, daewoo, mitsubishi, mazda, nintendo, and the rest sell to the "developed" world using asian names? just wondering. it actually gives their product more recognition. its business wise to sell from your base. what makes a product internation isnt its name, it's the quality.

I don't get the roman analogy. the world isnt rome, its the world. we each have out space in the world. Let's use out names. not only because of pride but because its business wise.

so my response is i'd keep the names the same, but add a Ltd at the end, e.g. Naija Zobo, Ltd
BusinessRe: More Attractive Names for Products Made in Nigeria by obong(m): 3:57am On Nov 18, 2005
hey the names are fine the way they are. why do you think english names are more international? dont you know when branding you sell your strenght? we are africans. use african names. jeez, whats wrong with us?!!!!!!!1

CultureRe: Female Circumcision: what's wrong with it? by obong(m): 12:17am On Nov 04, 2005
my own small sense tells me that female circumcision should stop because of its obvious ill effects. sort of like the ill effects of scarification. But while we work to eradicate this circumcision, we must stop buying into the lies told by the west about how and why its done.

first of all, circumcision in general is a african affair. the jews, once residents of africa, learn it from us. its one of the reasons every ethnic group in africa circumcises. i imagine that women in africa are circumcised because, like when its done to men, it is assumed it is a cleansing process. not a means to control the women's urges. The ill intent attached to circumcision by the west fuels hate towards africans. I believe female circumcision (why call it genital mutilation?) stems from the same source as male circumcision and that is the desire to be clean. besides if its to kill women's urges its doing a bad job because it actually makes the girls more likely to have sex because it has no feeling for them.

Besides why isnt the same argument placed about the cutting thatg goes on with men. why isntit called mutilation, and an attempt to control male urges. frankly it needs to stop for both genders, but also the erroneous intent attached to it also neds to be curtailed

i have posted the answer to this many times and no one wants to listen. arabic script doesnt mean arabic language, just like latin letters dont mean latin languag. we have a bunch of latin letters on our currency, but are we latin or do we speak latin? arabic letters can be used for other languages other than arabic. and it has nothing to do with religion. do latin letters like those we are using to comunicate here make us all christians

besides why stop at the letters. the numbers 1 2 3 etc are also or indo-arabic origin. why dont we remove the numbers too

Police arrest 30 over lynching of teenager in Lagos
By Odita Sunday

NO fewer than 30 persons including six women have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command following the lynching to death of an11-year-old boy in the metropolis.

The boy was accused of attempting to kidnap a five-year-old boy in the Surulere area of the city.

The suspects were raided at the early hours of yesterday by a combined team from the State Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) and anti-robbery squads of Mopol 22 and Mopol 20, Ikeja.

The raiding of the area where the boy was lynched was sequel to a directive by the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Sunday Ehindero and Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu that the boy's suspected killers should be arrested and brought to book.

The raid was confirmed to reporters by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adewole Ajakaiye, who has recently been promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police.

However, the police released one of the suspects because there was evidence that he came into Lagos only yesterday and was not in the city when the incident occurred.

The lynching of the boy on Monday October 17, happened in full glare of the public at the National Stadium, Surulere Lagos. He was set ablaze by an irate mob.

The state police spokesman, Mr. Olubode Ojajuni told reporters that all the suspects arrested would be investigated to know the level of their involvement in the act.

Those arrested were people whose residence are close to the scene of the lynching.
Foreign AffairsRe: The Euro: Possibly the Real Reason for US Invasion of Iraq? by obong(m): 5:03pm On Oct 23, 2005
I think you're wrong about these countries not wanting to undermine development in africa. Don't you realize that if africa, the most resource rich continent, develops that it will raise the price of basic commodities? Look at what china and india are doing to the price of oil, and add africa to that. that will directly impact negaively on the west's standard of living. Price of cocoa, tea, coffee, oil, coltane, rubber, and various minerals will become more expensive to acquire.

I don't think you know the extent of france's interests in Africa, if you think its limited to a few companies. France's cultural history is also tied to africa, as well as its military, economic and political might. If you have a chance, read the article below.

PoliticsRe: Nigerian First Lady Mrs Stella Obasanjo Is Dead by obong(m): 2:17pm On Oct 23, 2005
May her soul rest in peace. Ultimately thats something God can decide

What i would liek to see happen from this is more hospitals are built in nigeria and politicians dont have to leave the country to be treated. These services should likewise be transfered to the people
Foreign AffairsRe: The Euro: Possibly the Real Reason for US Invasion of Iraq? by obong(m): 4:34pm On Oct 22, 2005
You're right once again nferyn. But i do think internal trade would challenge the west because the UK and especially france rely on africa trading with them. Franch wouuld go to war to stop nigeria from taking its place in west africa

at any rate, if ecowas can adopt policies like a common currency, tarrifs and transporation and ocmmunication networks, we'd go very far. for instance, I wonder how much it cots to mail a letter from lagos to dakar. Tings liek that should be reduced to the bare minimum to encourage more internal trade
Foreign AffairsRe: The Euro: Possibly the Real Reason for US Invasion of Iraq? by obong(m): 2:01am On Oct 22, 2005
nferyn, i agree. I think africa could challenge the west. If ECOWAS got thier systems working together, it'd shift power. Perhaps the next leader will focus on making ecowas work. obasanjo has done a good job bringing stability
Foreign AffairsRe: The Euro: Possibly the Real Reason for US Invasion of Iraq? by obong(m): 2:00am On Oct 22, 2005
This is an interesting thread. I didnt know much about this angle, but it makes a lot of sense. I think oil and geographic location played a part, but swtiching to the EURO, pespecilly with an organisatio like OPEC could set an example for other groups to do the same.

I just wonder if any of them are still planning to switch to the euro

PoliticsRe: Nigeria Is Less Corrupt This Year - Transparency International by obong(m): 4:29pm On Oct 19, 2005
The focus on nigeria, good or bad, is too much. Nigeria has come to symbolise corruption in many people's minds and that will make it hard for it to have a healty rating because the list is primarily about perception. Besides, i think the list needs to be reworked and made truly international. since all of these 'international' organisations are based in the west, i wonder how truly international they are

WebmastersRe: E-mail Spamming May Soon Be Against the Law in Nigeria! by obong(m): 6:38pm On Oct 16, 2005
I may not be an expert in marketing, but i know a few things about the law being a lawyer. spamming may be annoying as hell, but its not illegal, and it shouldnt be made criminal unless (as i stated before) its done with the intent to commit a crime, like fraud. Some spam is illegal, but spam in general isnt
WebmastersRe: E-mail Spamming May Soon Be Against the Law in Nigeria! by obong(m): 3:32pm On Oct 16, 2005
Its not a crime. its merely an annoying act. And this draconian measure you are proposing is taking things too far and will actually harm small businesses trying to reach out to potential customers. Now you want to add phone calls to it as well? What about the shop keeper that asks you if you'd lie to see what wares he has to sell. Since its unsolicited, he should be sent to jail as well, i guess
WebmastersRe: E-mail Spamming May Soon Be Against the Law in Nigeria! by obong(m): 11:53pm On Oct 15, 2005
So bibi, when a sales person comes up to you and asks you to be buy something, (which is an unsolicited offier) he should also go to jail/?.Why should someone go to jail just because they are doing it over the internet. The intent matters a lot, which is why the law makes a distinction between crimes based on intent. It may be annoying to recived unsolicited offers or email, but it should not be made a criminal offense, unless the purpose is to further a crime, such as advance fee fraud.

Plain and simple; unsolicited mail, offers, email or whatever should not be a crime. its just annoying
