Shhh. Yiibos are always saints. Yorubas are the only tribe that betrays the south. In 1993 after Abiola (a southerner) won the elections, who was at the forefront of scuttling the whole process? Yup! That Yoruba man from Ilesa named Arthur Nzeribe. Betrayers all of them.

One major atrocity credited to Arthur Nzeribe who died Sunday was the formation of the Association for Better Nigeria, used to annul Nigeria’s best election held June 1993.
Nzeribe, born in Oguta Imo State was the mastermind of the group, which was not in anyway a mass movement.

It was set up by the military intelligence to perpetuate General Ibrahim Babangida’s rule till 1997.

Nzeribe’s ABN came in handy in 1993, when it was used to scuttle the June 12, 1993 election won overwhelmingly by Chief MKO Abiola’s.

P.M. News found an essay by Michael Orodare of Neusroom in June 2021 a fair account of the somewhat treasonable role of the ABN, with Nzeribe as the mastermind.

Classified in many reports as a shadowy group and a willing tool in the hands of Nigeria’s former military head of state General Ibrahim Babangida, the role played by the Association for Better Nigeria (ABN) in the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election remains indelible.

Although the personality of Babangida may have dwarfed the many atrocities of ABN and its promoters, the group prepared the ground for the declaration that scuttled what has been described as the most credible election in Nigeria’s history: The presidential contest between MKO Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC).


How ABN was formed

ABN was formed after the Babangida regime abolished all political parties and created two national parties – NRC and SDP in 1991.

The New York Times described ABN as “a lobbying group of wealthy businessmen, politicians and military officers who had led a highly visible campaign urging General Babangida to remain in office at least four more years”.

Although it claimed it had millions of members, ABN’s only known leaders were Arthur Nzeribe, Brigadier Haliru Akilu and Abimbola Davies.

“The primary objective of the ABN was to keep Ibrahim Babangida in power and maintain the military administration that has governed Nigeria for so long,” a report by the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada says.

To achieve its objective, the ABN put up billboards in Abuja with the message ‘Four More Years’, implying that Babangida should stay in power for another four year term.

“The intensity of the ABN’s pro-government campaigns led many observers to conclude that the federal military government was behind the activities of the association,” another report says.


ABN and the 1993 Election.

After years of military rule, Babangida promised to hand over power to a civilian president on August 27, 1993. He set up the National Electoral Commission (NEC) and appointed a Professor, Humphrey Nwosu as Chairman..

The Presidential election between Abiola and Tofa was billed for June 12, 1993. Two days before the election, members of the ABN filed a suit before the Abuja High Court asking NEC not to hold the election.

On the eve of the election (June 11) Justice Bassey Ikpeme ordered the suspension of the election but NEC ignored the order and went ahead citing Decree 13 of 1993 which ousted the courts’ jurisdiction with regard to creating impediments to the transition to civil rule programme.

While the results were trickling in, ABN members approached an Abuja High Court again asking it to stop the announcement of results.

“Justice Dahiru Saleh was around to handle it, he didn’t assign it to any other judge. He decided to hear the matter himself,” journalist Richard Akinnola wrote in his book ‘A Mandate Buried Alive’. “Though the suit filed was Motion on Notice, where the other party, that is, NEC would be heard, Saleh decided to hear the matter ex parte in Chambers, stopping further announcements of the results.”

Saleh ordered NEC to halt the release of the election results on the grounds that the election ought not to have been held in the first place. NEC complied with the ruling but headed for the Court of Appeal to challenge the order.

“In that appeal, we attached all the results of the election…showing that Abiola overwhelmingly won the election,” Nwosu wrote in his book “Laying the Foundation for Nigeria’s Democracy: My Account of June 12, 1993, Presidential Election and Its Annulment”.

On June 23, 1993, a day after NEC filed its appeal, Babangida nullified the election, and suspended NEC.

“These steps were taken to save our judiciary from being ridiculed and politicized locally and internationally,” Babangida said.
The ABN suit was the foundation upon which Babangida’s annulment of the election was based.

Arthur Nzeribe, a former Senator from Imo state, was the leader of ABN. He was Senator from October 1983 to December 1983. After the transition to democracy in 1999, Nzeribe contested as Senator again and spent eight years at the Senate from 1999-2007.

“I am proud that we cancelled the election. I wanted the election cancelled and it was cancelled,” Nzeribe, 82, told the New Telegraph newspaper in 2014 when asked about his role in the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election.

Abimbola Davies – ABN’s National Director of Organisation, was 36 years old in 1993 when he played an active role in the annulment of the election.

In a 2018 article, Dele Momodu who is regarded as one of Abiola’s confidants revealed that Davies later dumped the group and fled the country after addressing a press conference renouncing his membership of ABN and exposing some of its activities.

“Nigerians, we are guilty, but forgive us! Pride will not allow some of us to come out, but this I am doing on behalf of myself and other States,” Davies, now 63, reportedly said at a press conference.

This thing Yoruba people did to Heebo , which is simply : "don't meddle in our local politics", did not result in one hair being plucked from an Osu's flat head. But Osus are truly livid and upset to the point that they are now seriously (threatening as always) to leave the SW and Lagos in particular for their yeast.

But what of that of Arewa's ongoing court case seeking Heebo expulsion from Nigeria ? How did the osus react to this ?

But Yoruba that has never done any targeted pogrom on the heebo or discriminated against them as they suffer in the fundamentalist moslem north are "the most evil racist tribe" for telling the heebo to take their votes to the yeast.

They made it clear that their renouncing of their Nigerian citizenship is over the outcome and conduct of the Lagos gubernatorial elections .

They did not tear their passport over the wanton killings by thugs in places like Anambra, IMO , Ebonyi , Enugu and Abia The thuggery in the yeast elections was of no concern to these diaspora osus rather it was that of Lagos , a Yoruba state and land.

I pity for the future of the southwest. We are not grooming people like MKO, Awolowo, Tinubu, Soyinka and the other symbol of Leadership anymore. Disregarding political interests and affiliations, some of you sound like morons sometimes.

Much as David Umahi deserves accolades for infrastructural development, same cannot be said about his performance in Human development. Ebonyi people are largely civil servants and self-made business men and women. Even the civil service has witnessed a saddening measure of stagnation through out Umahi's 8years of governance. Promotions have been unpalatably slow. Employments haven't exactly been steady enough to warrant applause. Yet, for reasons owing to sheer political extremism, some of you can wake up and demean Peter Obi's performance while in office.

Obi built infrastructure, improved health care and education, created enabling environments for small and medium scale businesses to thrive, cleaned up the Anambra atmosphere to attract investments that translated into employments for indigenes and laid down policies that formed the foundation for the continuum in the Governance of Anambra that has trickled down to this day.

Even if you no like the man, try get conscience and say the truth as regards his achievements as a Governor, especially at a time when Anambra was a cesspit, a den for criminality and at a point he was dogged with endless challenges to his office by opposition parties and candidates.

Nigeria is not only an interesting country in terms of its comic nature. It is also a place with people who are unconcerned about the way the world sees them in terms of ignorance and naivete. In this country, people say and do things that makes the country and its people the laughingstock of humanity through crass ignorance which is accompanied by dogmatism, herd mentality and unwillingness to appreciate the truth.

The Yoruba says “ ti enia ba fe je ogunkogun, a pa itankitan” meaning that “ when a man is out to inherit an undeserved property, he would have to fabricate distorted and untrue history”. Why? if one may ask do some people refer to Lagos as a “ No man’s land” despite obvious facts that the city does not qualify at all for the label? To which Lagos are they referring? How would any rational being refer to a place that has clear and undisputed historical origin and tradition as a “No man’s land?”

The phrase no man’s land has existed since the medieval period to refer to a wasteland or a dumping ground and it came to the fore again during First World War when it was used to refer to “a disputed territory” between two countries or an area that is not controlled by anyone. It is generally an area where there is no king or ruler. It is a home for societal deviants and outlaws.

In Nigeria, this phrase was first used in 1947 to describe Lagos by the First Speaker of the House of Representatives and later Minister for Foreign Affairs, Jaja Anucha Nwachukwu. He used this term not because he believed that nobody owns Lagos but because he believed since Lagos was then the Federal Capital Territory, it belongs to all Nigerians. The question is “Which Lagos was Nwachukwu talking about”? Which Lagos was the Federal Capital of Nigeria? Most youths of today are generally disinterested in the history of Nigeria, hence, the profound ignorance about the country and its constituents.

For avoidance of doubt, Lagos State was never the capital of Nigeria. The capital city of the country until the year 1976 when the Justice Akinola Aguda recommended the movement to Abuja was the space between Fadeyi and Victoria Island in Lagos. Any other space from Fadeyi to Asaba to Ondo State to Oyo to Ogbomosho were listed under the Western Region whose Premier was Chief Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo. For example, Mushin is not Lagos, Palm-grove is not Lagos, Ikeja is not Lagos, Oshodi is not Lagos and so on. This was the situation until the Mid-Western Region was created from the Benin and Delta provinces in 1963. It is the Mid-West that has become Edo and Delta States today.

The Federal Capital Territory which Jaja Nwachukwu referred to as “No Man’s Land” has clear and unambiguous ownership. It is important to mention that Lagos Island belong to the Aromire family and this is undisputable and not Benin. Apapa belongs to the Oluwa family, Lagos Mainland belongs to the Oloto family, Tomaro to Onisiwo, Victoria Island belongs to the Oniru family, Ikate is the land of the Elegushi family, the whole of Ijora including Ajegunle belongs to the Ojora family and so on. These are lands that are well documented and anyone who cares to know the fact should search the archives in Nigeria and London in search of the truth.

The uninformed and flippant individuals who label Lagos as a “no man’s land” should know that the ownership of Lagos was settled on 11 July 1921 when the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council in London which is the final Court of Appeal of the British Empire ruled that Lagos lands belong to the Idejo chiefs who are the children of Olofin. Chief Amodu Tijani Oluwa, the Oluwa of Lagos who was the plaintiff in the case took the British Government to Court for stealing his land in the process he won a huge compensation of twenty-two thousand, five-hundred-pound sterling and thirty-nine pence.

Moreover, it is important to mention that it is only one of the five divisions of Lagos State that served as the capital of Nigeria. There is still Ikorodu (Oko Odu) (farm of blackberry) which is an area that includes the entire stretch of the riverine area of Ketu, Owode-Onirin, Itowolo, up to Imota; Badagry (Agbadayigi or simply Agbada) which if from Mile Two to Badagry Town; Ikeja which covers the whole of Bariga, Somolu, Kosofe, Isolo, Mushin, Oshodi, Egbe, Ikotun, Onigbongbo, Ojokoro Ipaja, Ayobo, Ojodu, Orile Agege, Idimu and their neighbourhood; Epe (the forest of black ants) which is from Ibeju to the whole of Epe and its suburbs (Epe shares boundary with Ijebu-Ode). These divisions called ibile were created by Edict number 3 of May 1968.

Lagos as a place has existed long before the country called Nigeria and it is one of the oldest cities in Nigeria. For clear explanation, the Portuguese explorer who gave the name Lagos (Lago de Curamo meaning the Lake of Kuramo) came to the land for the first time in 1472 where he met Olofin and his children (that was 551 years ago) which makes Lagos older than virtually all modern cities in Nigeria.

Let us take a look at the year of existence of some cities. Onitsha (Onicha -mmili ) meaning is a city founded by Benin adventures in the year 1550 (473 year old. Founded almost a century after Lagos had been in existence), Enugu (Enu-Ugwu or Hill Top) was established by the Enugwu-Ngwo and Nike people around 1690). Umuhaia (the Market Place) was established by the British in the early 20th century.

Awka (Place of the blacksmiths) is one of the oldest cities in Igboland and the center of Nri civilization. Sokoto (Seat of the caliphates) was established by Uthman Dan Fodio who used the title Sarkin Musulumi) in 1804. When he died in 1817 his son Mohammed Bello was the first Sultan of Sokoto who ruled the Eastern part of Sokoto while his brother Abdullahi ruled the Western part of it. Kano (Masculinity or Capability) was probably the oldest city in Nigeria as it was established around 999 by the Hausa Bakwai people.

Kaduna (the crocodile city) was founded by Lord Fredrick Lugard in 1900 which is almost 428 years after Lagos has been existing. Abeokuta (city beneath the rock) was founded in 1830 by Sodeke who was the leader of the Egba refugees who escaped from Oyo during the period. Ibadan (near the field) was a war camp created by a group of Oyo warriors in 1829.

We have taken samples of these cities to show that Lagos is older than most cities in Nigeria and therefore it would be childish, naïve and outrightly innocent for anyone to suddenly brand a city that has existed for centuries and adorned with a rich history, an enviable culture and norms with robust traditional administration and a center of Yoruba civilization as a “no man’s land” when the entire civilization of those who are making claim for Lagos was not at all in existence when Lagos was established.

It is a perfect political strategy when Northern Muslim Clerics and Imams instruct Muslims on who to vote for but if a Pastor tells his members to vote for those that will defend the Church from terrorists and oppressors, it becomes an issue, my prayer for you all lovers of evil is that may God and nature judge you all.
