This is actually a true life story that i want to share with us all. An experience never to be forgotten easily. These experiences are what many Nigerians go through in Malaysia and other Asian countries in the name of travelling abroad..

TravelRe: Nigerian Students In The Uk How Do You Survive? by ocheejemb: 9:22pm On Jun 15, 2015
Actually, they are right and wrong at the same time.

For immigration or work experience purposes, then the UK is probably not the best choice. However, there are still opportunities here but there is no guarantee of, or formula to getting them. That said, I do know several people (Computer Science and Engineering though) who found worthwhile things to do after Masters, but the vast majority did not and had to go back to their respective countries.

If you are looking for a great educational and cultural experience ALONE, then the UK is definitely the place to go. If you are looking for a sure means to change your life, then maybe not.
WebmastersRe: Is It Possible To Build A World Class Website Without Using CSS?? by ocheejemb: 6:38pm On Jun 14, 2015

Good evening guys.
I have been pondering over this issue for quite sometime now as an amateur in the game am done with Html but CSS is uninteresting to me but am glued to Javascript so the question on my mind is that Is It Possible To Build A Website Using Just Html,Javascript,Jquery and the rest without using CSS??.
And i want to know some world class websites built without CSS,Twitter & Nairaland comes to mind but am not so certain.Tanx
You can see what a site looks like without CSS by playing around with Developer tools on your favourite browser and deleting the Stylesheets. Skeletal. Black and white in a single font, nothing at all to see. Nairaland has a minimalistic CSS theme, which could really be improved actually. Twitter on the other hand has a very complex and robust UI, so I'm not sure why you said it doesn't use CSS.

I don't know if someone has ever been in this dilemma before.

A friend of mine just received an interview invite for a Web/Social Media Administrator. He studied Business admin.

Seeing as this post is somewhat more related to computer and web design stuff, the guy is confused. He doesn't know much about web and social media stuff and the job description is kinda intimidating to him.

He's thinking of ignoring the invite but then, its from a big company.

What do you think he can do? Should he forget it or give it a try?
Lol..your friend doesn't deserve this job.

Yes people do open offshore bank account but do you know the condition?

How will you be able to open bank account here in the UK for somebody living in Nigeria? Please explain to me how you go about doing that.
Exactly, if you can meet the conditions then you are good to go. But it is not fraud.

As long as she is your biological or adopted mother (with birth certificate), has a letter consenting that you can use her money, and is legally in the UK, then you are fine.

You can't have UK bank account opened for you while you still live in Nigeria. That is fraud
How is that fraud, strictly speaking? People can have offshore accounts, can't they.

Thanks for the link; I think I know my Uni quite well and I have near-daily meetings with my supervisors.

As for the guy's distinction- I do not need to research about it. You already described yourself as a 'hater'- so anyone would view your subsequent comments in that light.
If you have near-daily meetings with your supervisor then it is strange that you do not seem to know how the UK PhD is administered. You can pass or fail a PhD. There are no distinctions. You can pass a PhD without any corrections suggested by your examiners - which means it was more or less flawless, which is an 'implied' distinction especially in my field. However, this does not necessarily mean your PhD research was of better quality than someone who passed with minor corrections.

Maybe I should clarify what I meant by being a hater.

Every Academic is trained, especially at PhD level, to be extremely critical. You never take any information presented to you at face value, and you ensure that any claim made is backed up by evidence. In many ways, this resembles 'hating', and this is why I described myself as such.

'You might be a hater'

I think this sums it up.

Every PhD is unique, true. However, every PhD goes through a scoring system during viva. Hence one can easily get a rating at least, within his faculty. At the very least.
Maybe you should familiarise yourself with your school's PhD requirements and show me where either of the words 'score', 'grade' or 'rating' is used:
https://www.ucl.ac.uk/srs/academic-regulations/docs/rd-section2.pdf

I stand by my original claim. There is no evidence to suggest that this guy was the best PhD student in Newcastle or whatever these blogs claim. His name does not appear anywhere on the website or on the Internet.

I

Erm, but you actually sound like an ignorant hater... PhDs in the UK are graded according to certain KPIs... That's the first thing my supervisor here at UCL.
I can assure you I am not ignorant, but I admit I might be a hater. You'll get there if you stay in academia long enough.

UCL is nice, well done on getting in there. I wouldn't call what the criteria PhD's are graded on 'KPIs' although I can see why one may refer to them as that. Since you must be novel and thorough and scientific and expand knowledge and all. But the thing is every PhD thesis is so unique that it would be hard to grade one against another. I do know some PhD theses win prizes anyway, but I'm not sure how this process works. However, there I could find no evidence to buttress this claim that this PhD was awarded as best in his University.

and you do know that, 206 bones are exact numbers of bones in the body, or that acceleration due to gravity on earth is 9.8 at free fall, or that the atomic numbers of each element on the periodic table are exact numbers eh?
The bones, yes, are a finite number. However, gravity is not exactly 9.8m/s2. I'm not sure about atomic numbers. Truth is a lot of science, especially in biosciences, is just very very very precise and close estimations. That's why stats are so important.

Great, so you know about confidence intervals and p values for instance. These wouldn't be necessary if science was so exact.

I'm really sorry to have to say this, especially as it will make me sound like a bitter hater..

As far as I know, UK universities do not grade PhDs against each other the way they could do for Masters and Undergraduate degrees. It would be difficult to judge one PhD thesis as being the 'best'. What does happen is that candidates may win awards for thier PhD research, but I could not find any evidence online or otherwise to suggest that this is the case.

It could also be that he passed his PhD immediately without corrections, which is actually quite rare I think. So kudos to him if this is what has happened.

Science is never exact, basically very good estimates within set confidence intervals. All your other ancestries could easily be noise to yout 60% Nigerian signal. Or it could be that some of your ancestors might have migrated from one of these places. With no records, you might never know.
