Education › Re: Common Grammatical Tautologies by ocheejemb: 5:47pm On Nov 23, 2013 |
Vivly: Ok. I've noticed a few tautologies commonly used here and I'm gonna post them. Feel free to post those you've noticed too. First, a grammatical tautology is when you repeat an idea within a particular sentence or phrase, giving the impression you are providing additional information.. For example, she woke up at 4.am in the morning. Am signifies morning, why bother? Here we go 1.Very beginning. The word very is redundant in the phrase
2.Small minority Politics section, A place is regarded as minority because it's small.
3. Personal belongings. All belongings are personal, unless they've been stolen from a public place
4.PIN number Please don't ask anybody for their pin and still say number. The initial 'n' in the acronym PIN stands for number.
5.Honest truth A truth is either true or it isn't. Unless it's a politician speaking.
6.Past experiences All experiences are past. All those thread starters saying 'please share your past experience', take note.
7.Old adage Please, there's a reason it's called adage and it's because it's old Most of your so called corrections are misinformed. These are adjectives used to further qualify nouns, or simply commonly used idiomatic or colloquial English expressions. From the very beginning is a commonly used English expression to show its from the "from the exact point when something starts". So for example, if you say "I started doing it at the beginning of the year", then you could mean anytime in January up till March possibly. However, "I started at the very beginning of the year" suggests that you started on Day 1 of the year. Small Minority: Again, this may be right usage. If 1 million people make up a minority, is this still a 'small' minority, e.g Africans within the UK or US can be considered a minority. Are they small in size? However, Africans who worship Sango in the UK, or who commit crimes and give everyone else a bad name. These are examples of small minority when compared with the entire population. Personal belongings: Can multiple people not share ownership of an item, or can an individual not make use of items which don't actually belong to them? I am using a computer which belongs to me (kind of), but I do not own it as it was purchased by my employers, but was given to me to work with. It is my computer, but It's not my personal belonging. Honest truth: This is an idiom, an expression. Yes the truth should always be honest, but we are humans. e.g "The truth is that I was in class today", "The honest truth is that I was in class today but I wasn't paying attention". Past experience: Experiences can occur in real time. Past experience suggests a considerable amount of time has passed between you having the experience (it didn't happen yesterday or this morning, or just now). Old adage: 'Poo happens' is an adage. Is it old? |

PasD: The news everywhere is that the Imo State Government pay 10,000naira monthly allowance to Imo State Corps Members but how true is that?
I serve in Imo State and I cannot deny the fact that sometime last month I received 10,000naira credit alert from the treasury of the State Government.
But something is not right here. More than 70percent of Imo corps members did not receive this allowance and the news we heard later on was that the money was paid to only corpers posted to state govt parastatals.
But what baffles us all is the text message from the bank (credit alert content) observe something below:
Alert from Federal govt- CR- Alert Acct: 6012225701, Amt: 19,800.00, Desc:SEPT 2013 ALLOWANCE BO NYSC ASS AVE, Date: 09/10/2013, Aval Bal: 68657.00
Alert from Imo State- CR- Alert Acct: 6012225701, Amt: 10000.00, Desc: STATE ALLOWANCE BO NYSC ASS AVE, Date: 09/10/2013, Aval Bal: 30657.00
Observe above that the federal govt specified that its september allowance but the state govt did not specify the particular month. This is a trick because since then they have not paid us again o!
As a matter of fact in a whole year, we just received the money from state government once! Yet our amiable, good, honest governor parades the whole nation with the good news that he pays us 10k every month! What do you call that? Politics? Trick? Smart move? Whatever? I don vex. Won't you at least observe some chill first? You haven't even patiently waited for an extra month before branding the man as a liar, because a BANK sent you an alert with a different remark. |

Are you guys kidding me?
What is this same Federal Goverment doing about indiscriminate deaths of Nigerians in Nigeria? What has this goverment done about indiscriminate deaths for foreigners in Nigeria? The Nigerian in India was killed by a drug gang, why should the Indian goverment apoligize for this? The Nigerians in India constituted themselves a nuisance by rioting in a soverign nation, attacking police, and blocking a highway. What is the Federal Goverment saying about this? |

Any woman preaching on a pulpit in church is a sinner and has gone against the doctrine of the church-simple. Stop trying to put a gloss on what the Bible say! Because of one single verse taken out of context, you are saying this? Is this even logical to you sir |

Who will lose out if 800,000 Indian business-owners and employers of labour pack-up and leave Nigeria vs a few Nigerian drug dealers, students and medical tourists? |

kane45: Our leaders are to be blamed for this shame. If the economy is in good shape and our youth and our youth are gainfully employed, they won't go over there to constitute nusiance. The grass ain't always green over the fense and our govt should take every necessary step to protect the integrity of nigerians both at home and aboard. In d case where nigerians are without valid visas, let them come back home and the indians also deported back to their country btw they will be d one to loss because they are more indians in Nigeria than nigerians over there. Well, with the level of tribalism that goes on here on Nairaland, its no suprise that there would be even stronger racism.
Well, I've never worked under an Indian supervisor, but I have worked with several. I strongly doubt that they treat you any differently from how they would treat their own kind back home, or how a Nigerian boss would treat you. I'm guessing a lot of Nigerians would just have an automatic bias and a complex, "Why is this foreigner bossing me around in my own country".
If its paining you like that quit your job and work for Nigerians, maybe they will pamper you and feed you milk and honey. |

Though it still looks like an airplane, this is the first step in the right direction. As a SF loving guy, this is what we are waiting for. It would be way more cool without the wings, and rear wheels. A car that can fly without wings is what we are talking about.
Source Even though this is still just a concept and i doubt its feasible in large scale at all, how do you think its aerodynamically possible for anything to fly without wings? |

Area-Fada: What I learnt from a Ghanaian is that most of the lecturers have MSc or professional qualification. She doesn't seem to think much of research or degrees got through research like MPhil or PhD.
That only means they have poorer quality faculty/lecturers.
Despite their stable academic calendar, less qualified staff means lower quality education.
You cannot give what you don't have. I studied Engineering at Unilag. More than half of my lecturers did not have Phds. |
Education › Re: Most Nigerian Students In Ghanaian Universities Are Serial JAMB Failures by ocheejemb: 12:51pm On Nov 04, 2013 |
Akson man: Regularly we are inundated with fairy tale news about how wonderful Ghanaian universities are.
Of course ASUU strikes/government neglect have made university education in Nigeria a nightmare, but in the last decade Nigeria has come up with several private universities with fantastic structures populated by Nigerian students.
Ghana has some pretty universities too,but many Nigerian students often go for some strange Ghanaian universities that are just 3 storey buildings along a street corner.
GUESS WHAT? The main reason why many some Nigerians rush to Ghanaian universities is because THEY CAN'T PASS JAMB. In Ghana, once you pass WAEC and u can afford tuition, admission to any Ghanaian university is certain. Unlike in Nigeria where regardless of the university you want to enter, you must first attain a descent JAMB score, plus POST-UME results.
This is the true story of the mad rush to Ghanaian universities You that passed JAMB, your school is on strike. You are here talking nonsense. |
Christianity Etc › Re: Why Are Ladies Uncovering Their Heads In Church Nowadays by ocheejemb: 7:37pm On Nov 03, 2013 |
Ukuts gp: Why are ladies opening their head in church? Is it to display their new hairstyles or what? Is it proper?
Now, some questions we would be confronted with is as follows:
1. When ladies open their head in church, does it not contradicts paul's teaching in 1corinthians 11:1-16.
2. Are they not usurping men's authority for not putting a covering on their head?
3. Does women in bible days go to church without covering their head with a veil or a scarfs? Or they open it.
4. Is the symbol of authority that paul talks about in 1corinthians 11:10 the woman's long hair or what?
5. If the woman's long hair is her glory does she suppose to display that glory in God's presence? Or cover it up and submit to his glory? Isaiah 42:8.
6. When a lady display her long hair in church is she not competing with God's glory? And that she lacked submission to God's authority and the headship of the man?
7. Is it really true that women's long hair is given to them for a covering?
8. Are ladies suppose to prophesy, pray etc without covering their head or hair?
I want you to drop your comment and provide answers to these questions. God doesn't care what is on your head. He's more interested in what is in your heart. |

Christianity Etc › Re: Why Are People Dancing Azonto And Makossa In Church? by ocheejemb: 2:15pm On Nov 03, 2013 |
Ukuts gp: Is like some people definitely does not know the difference between church and disco hall.
On sunday when you go to church, during the praises you will see people dancing Azonto and Makossa. You will see young boys and girls rocking, dancing Azonto and makossa style.
I dont know why people who say they christians are dancing such worldly dance which are invented from the kingdom of darkness. I cant even imagine myself dancing in such a manner. Cant a christian dance in a simple and godly way? Must it be Azonto and makossa which are satanic in origin?
Even those playing the musical instrument are not even helping matters, as they play all these worldly and ungodly makossa beats and sounds.
I almost want to tell one lady dancing that way close to me to stop dancing that way but i just control myself. I dont just like such dance, it is worldly. Or what do you think. Is dancing Azonto and makossa style proper in church? To me i dont like it. I dont know if i am the only one thinking that way. Thanks. What is your definition of a Godly dance? |

And I'm not trashing someones business, I just happen to have a problem with JUMIA's 5 days delivery policy.
Why on earth would i have to wait 5 days to receive an ordered Item, Within Lagos when i could as well go to the mall and get it.
5 days delivery policy for orders within lagos is just totally stupid and absurd if you ask me, C'mon i mean its Lagos... Why can delivery be same day..
AND Don't anyone say they are still growing because they are almost a year old now.
Secondly, A store which doesnt have Giftwrapping options, You can order gifts from them, Say My mum's Birthday is tomorrow morning, I cant place a fast order and have it delivered next morning, why then should i evn bother to waste my time on the website if it doesnt serve my most immediate needs.
They Do have their Plus sides too, but the service isnt comprehensive enough for me..
