CareerRe: Between Master's Degree And Professional Course by ocheejemb: 5:00pm On Nov 07, 2014
Strictly speaking, a professional course is exactly that, a course for professionals. It should not be done by fresh graduates but by professionals in a field seeking to certify their expertise in that field. A Master's degree on the other hand is just furthering a first degree so theres no real requirement to have work experience, although that almost always helps.
EducationRe: Mass Failure In Nigerian Law School by ocheejemb: 10:58am On Oct 21, 2014
Leopantro:
you truly believe that? how many law schools are in Nigeria and what is the capacity of each one? if everyone passed the exam do you really think all the law schools would have the capacity to accommodate them?
the law board passes a certain percentage of applicant for each exam irrespective of the number that applied for it. check last year's pass rate.

Edit: I don't believe that the educational system in law schools are deteriorating. a graph is drawn of the total exam score and a certain percentage is taken as the cut off Mark. you might have passed the exam but if your score is below that Mark, you don't pass.
however, considering the cost of the exam, setting such high standards could be harmful.
First of all, did you read this article? Its the law school that's failed them, not a single University or Faculty. Secondly, if 2/3 of an entire set is failing the problem is not with the students, its with the school.
EducationRe: The Use Of 'i Was Like Ok' By Nigerian Students by ocheejemb: 5:47pm On Oct 15, 2014
Keenysbojan:
I have been wondering why Nigerian students always use the word 'i was like ok' in every of their saying... I found it difficult to believe that 'i was like ok' is a correct short sentence, in English...

because I have sat down and think about this all over and over and over, and through research I found that there is no short sentence in English, like 'i was like ok'.. but some Nigerians are so terrible when it comes to the aspects of speaking or writing standard English...

A student of unilorin came to meet my big bro at home, and he said I have been trying your number since I left Lagos and I WAS LIKE OK LET ME CALL YOUR YOUNGER BROTHER TO CONFIRM..

immediately,I felt the 'spirit of bad English' in what he said above... since then I have been searching,I have been asking those who are highly educated and those who study English in universities.. if the use of I WAS LIKE OK is good to speak..

to nairelanders do any of you have anything to say about this topic... share your own points of view and let some 'BAD English speaker(s)' learn from you.. thanks

Yours Faithfully
k e e n y s b o j a n
If you are going to be so pedantic about the use of English even in informal speak, then you should watch your own grammar, punctuation and capitalisation.

I'm contemplating dropping some courses and rewriting them next session to boost my GP. please can I resit those exams and still go for NYSC that same year? I talked to my course adviser about it and he said i'll be able to go with the next available batch once my result is out. pls is this possible? what is your advice to me? N.B: I'm 20 years old
If you are sure you will get the 2.1 then go for it. Don't think about tommorow, think about 10 years from now.

These people should have known by now that in times like this, those soldiers should be flown instead of traveling by road cos Kogi is somehow. This' exacly how they were ambushed sometimes in 2013 or so in Kogi when they were going for peacekeeping mission in Mali.
How will they fly 850 soldiers, are they going to Iraq ni

KingRuckus: Pls I have an issue, I got my naija passport in 2010 ( & I have travelled twice with it). It is due to expire in JUNe 2015. I would apply for a tier 4 visa in October because my course starts jan. 2015 & ends JuN 2016. I hope my passport expiry date won't affect my visa or should I just get another one before I apply ??
I think your passport has to be valid for 6 months before your application, so if you apply in around November, you should be fine.

Why are they sending applications to Sheffieldhuh?

msRager: Teleperformance is one the most useless services for visa applications.
I submitted an application since the 6th of August and waited the 15 working days. Yet no visa/passport. Their tracking website is awful and should be shut down.
I went over to their office on Friday and tried to find out why it's taking this long of course they had story to tell. How it's not their fault and it's Sheffield and they have been sending reminders to Sheffield office.
Apparently some Nigerians had come that morning to scatter the place.
...
P.s if you have a teleperformance interview change it sharp sharp to Ikeja or abuja.. seems our own embassy is more reliable

Yes its free but that's not to say you can just walk in any hospital and get a checkup like Naija. You'd need to register with and book an appointment with your GP and explain why you want a checkup etc.

http://wenr.wes.org/2013/07/an-overview-of-education-in-nigeria/

When I was in Unilag circa 2007, there were an estimated 35,000 registered students. As at 2011, there were 17620 Nigerian students in all of the UK.

School fees were increased in LASU and the students protested till it was brought down. Same for several other government Uni's. Covenant Uni has good facilites but they treat students like primary school kids. Nigeria isn't losing anything from 'educational tourism', Nigeria cant supply the demand for tertiary education. However, Nigeria is losing on all fronts to mismanagement, indiscipline and corruption.

Jesus christ if you combine that with the number going to US, Canada, Russia, Australia, Singapore and even China. Then you'll see why it's hear breaking.

SpikeC start a thread on the topic let's rob minds bro
The number of all the Nigerian students in the UK isnt up to the number of students in Unilag. Nothing heart breaking about it.

justwise: Yes its, £85 for a single bedroom is a rip off. in some place £90 a week will get you a studio accommodation.
Abeg where, lemme move there. I guess it depends on location, but for Cranfield and Milton Keynes, I dont think its a rip-off. A survey on gumtree or spareroom should help the OP.

3sha4lyf: Lemme add to what Justwise has written.
* Check If it's for a double room, and I mean a double room with double bed, NOT single room with double bed (sorry can't give measurements but if you search online, you'll see a standard DR and SR size)
* When JW says ALL BILLS, IT MEANS ALL BILLS! No shared bills except Council tax which of course, as a student, you don't pay. He he he.
* Also is the room let by live-in or live-out landlord? ( gosh, I hate L/I landlords, so sorry).
* is it en-suite or shared bathroom(s)? How many? As said, anything more than 3 to a house isn't worth it but you may consider if your room is en-suite. Again, try to find out if your fellow room mates are on the same (study) track with you. What I mean is, most postgrad students rarely live with undergrads because they can easily get distracted (I can't really explain this but you'll feel it when you start) and if you're one
PG student, trust me, a time comes in your studies where you need no distraction and knowing Crainfield uni for what it is, that time will come quick! cheesy

Be sure to read the tenancy agreement before you even sign or release funds. I prefer a rolling contract than a 12-month contract cos you end up worrying and searching for a new place when you should be doing your dissertation, final exams, essays, etc. So think it.

HTH as well.
Cranfield doesnt have any undergraduates.

GeneralShepherd: Hello House ,

oga justwise and all my oda ogas in the house. Please i have a question, I got an accommodation for 85 pounds per week for a shared house at Cranfield University. do you think its a fair offer? should i seek for alternate accommodation off-campus?

Thanks in advance
I don't think 85 pounds is 'daylight robbery' as some people have said. £340pcm (per calendar month) is not cheap, but its also not too expensive. I believe that the cheapest accommodation anywhere in the UK will be something like £250pcm, probably a room in a house with bills not included. So when you add bills, you are probably coming up to like £300 pounds a month.

I've been to Cranfield once, it is a very serious place mehn. Very studious. And unlike many uni's it has a proper campus in the middle of nowhere. Getting private accommodation outside campus means you may have to commute or walk a long distance into campus everyday. It may not be worth it, even if the rent appears cheaper.

Rachii: No you don't have to leave the money. They bank only confirms to them your bal as at the date your statement was printed. They bank doesn't have the right to give them the balance as at when the came to confirm.
I agree with this statement. Unless the UKVI are happy to break their own UK Data protection laws outside the UK, the best they can do is verify that the statements given to them are genuine. No bank in the UK will divulge your personal information without a Section 29 order siged by a judge.

I don't believe there is any fraud or dishonesty in withdrawing the money or whatever after getting the visa, as long as you are not planning to cheat the system in some way, and you have a genuine plan to pay your fees and living costs in the UK(which is admittedly difficult to determine). Truth of the matter is not many Brits can boast of having these kinds of funds just sitting in their bank account doing nothing for 28 days. As someone mentioned, even the Uni's have instalmental plans for a reason, because not everyone can afford to cough out 10 - 22k plus pounds tuition + 9 months living allowances at once, and that in itself should not exclude you from getting your British degree. Spreading the cost may make it much easier.

The money in your account for 28 days really is just proof to UKVI that you have access to that kind of money ANYWAY.

Your visa should start 1 month before your course (if its longer than 6 months), does your course start in November? If your visa isnt valid yet, you will be refused entry into the UK, and I don't know what will happen to your issued visa, but its not a good idea.

3sha4lyf: If going with arikair, get a return ticket or don't bother.

Other airlines may overlook it but sometimes first timers or ppl r usually asked for their return tickets at the point of entry and if you cannot produce it, den u'll return to Naija free of charge immediately, if u see what I mean.

Just for curiosity sake, pls why would u wanna buy a one-way ticket when it's as expensive as, if not more than, buying a return ticket?
You can just get a return ticket for return in, say, 1 year time so that by the next year, of u wanna travel, u use it or if you'll rather change the date to a later date, you pay change-of-date fee and use it.
Not necessarily true, Emirates and Qatar have really cheap one way tickets if you don't mind the long haul flight, meanwhile BA and KLM will nearly cut your throat with thier return prices, which you are almost guaranteed to keep on changing. Also, if you do get a return, make sure its one that can be cahanged. Use wakanow or something to check the prices.

Olola15: I just got my visa and am planning to come into Uk on Monday.Somebody mentioned to me that i have to get a return ticket. How thru is this as my plan is to get a one way ticket.
you have to make sure you are buying a ticket that can be changed, as not all return tickets can be.

Nihilist: If you smoke be prepared.

Smoking is VERY expensive here.

No aboki selling sticks, and it costs around 5 pounds for a pack of 10 in most shops

Igbo is even worse, here weed is sold by weight
a gram of weed costs 10 pounds(10-bag)

2 grams cost 20 pounds(20-bag)

Though in some cities up north, you can get up to an eight(3.5g) for the same 20 quid

A gram is only enough to roll 2 joints, so most peeps including myself smoke blunts(Igbo mixed with tobacco) instead.

A word to the wise, due to the advanced hydroponics involved in growing the THC-heavy strains here, some of you might find the Igbo here stronger than what you're used to...so go very easy at first and gauge yourself

Oh you might also want to purchase a small set of digital scales to weigh your purchase...some of the dealers here will think nothing of ripping you off if they know you're new in town.
lloooollll...what?
